Single Service & Lunch Celebrate our Anniversary! (10/30/16)

Sunday October 30 has two things about it that are special to PUMC: THING 1 THING 2 Back in November of 1885,  the PITMAN GROVE METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH was organized.  From that small beginning of 43 members, we have grown into what is now the “Pitman United Methodist Church.” It’s our birthday and we are now 131 years old! It’s the 5th Sunday of the month!   So,coupled with something that’s true of us every day (we love to eat!), we’re all going to...

Open Wide for Trunk or Treat (10/29/16)

Yes, Halloween can be a time to praise our Creator.  Maybe not by getting carried away with the traditional festivities, but by sharing in God’s love, in the fellowship of friends and family, and in the bounty of His harvest and provision. We’re hosting our annual “Trunk or Treat” in our parking lot on Saturday October 29, from 6:30 to 8:30PM  Rain or shine!  This event invites volunteers to decorate the trunks of their cars in a clean, age appropriate theme.  The cars...

PUMC Raising Fun(ds) at the Glassboro Friendlys! (Thursday 10/20/15)

PUMC has developed a tradition of eating at Friendlys to help raise funds for our missions.  Helping  feed others by eating out?!?  Yep!  The restaurant donates a portion of everyone’s bill to our church (if you present a voucher when ordering). And PUMC people love to eat!  Starting with our first “Fun Raiser” back  in June of 2015, we have taken advantage of Friendly’s “Fun Raiser” program by packing the Glassboro Friendlys on the Third Thursday of each...

Redbird Flying into PUMC! (10/14/16 – 10/16/16)

Redbird mission is special Conference of the United Methodist Church which is dedicated to serving the poor in Appalachia.  For many years, our church has sent mission teams into that area to help repair homes.  In recent years, our efforts have transitioned into a partnership with Red Bird Mission. In 2013, a team from our church traveled to Kentucky to serve with Redbird. One year later, our congregation raised over $3600 to support Redbird’s ministry.   Check out the below post for...

Becoming Agents of Holiness- Pt 1 (9/18/16)

Pastor Jim is beginning a sermon series on Prayer, entitled “Becoming Objects of Holiness.”  In this first week, he reminded us that prayer changes us; it doesn’t change God.  In order to grow into holiness and to be an “agent” that God can use to His glory, we must develop an active and growing prayer life. And it’s important that we pray together as a family of believers in “Corporate Prayer.” Yeah- I can go into my “prayer closet”...

Prayer: Steering Wheel or Spare Tire???

The next time you get into your car, notice what you do. It’s all habit so you probably haven’t even thought about it. But chances are, you sit down, buckle up, and then you start the engine. But before you go, what’s the first part of the car you touch? Or put it this way… do you start out by touching the Steering Wheel or do you instantly go to the Spare Tire?

Starting on Tuesday Sept. 20, our Tuesdays at PUMC will include the following: 9:30 AM  Bible Study in Potter’s Hand (Led by Pastor Jim). On this first Tuesday we’ll wrap up our look at Revelation by studying the letter to the church in Laodicia.  After that, we’ll...

Tickets are needed- proceeds will pay for the art supplies and they’ll raise a bit extra to help boost our...

Acolyte Ministry Training (9/20/16)

Worship is nothing but a jumble of notes and words unless the Holy Spirit is there.   In Matt 18:20, Jesus said:  “For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them.” Acolytes help us recognize and celebrate God’s presence among us during our services of worship.  The symbolic lighting of the altar candles ushers in the spirit of worship.  And at the end of the service, the “unlighting” of the candles and removing of the flame reminds us that...

Where is Your Bethany? (8/21/16)

Where is Your Bethany? (8/21/16)

We all need a place of rest.  A place where we can gather with friends, let our hair down, and unwind.  Even Jesus needed a place like that.  Sometimes He went up on a mountaintop by Himself to pray.  While in Jerusalem, He frequently prayed in a grove of Olive Trees.  One time He was transfigured as He met on a mountaintop with Elijha and Moses! But another place that was special to Jesus was a village down the road from Jerusalem called Bethany. Lay Speaker (“Lay Servant”) Jim...

Fall 2016 Small Groups are Set to Kick Off!

Over the years, Pitman United Methodist Church has offered to its congregation small groups that based their existence on building relationships with one another and with God. Some groups lasted several years, and some ended after their courses of study were completed. Small groups are part of God’s plan for spiritual maturity! “Two are better than one…. If they fall, one will lift up the other…” Ecclesiastes 4: 9-12 “For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them.”...

Youth Set to “Lighten Up” in September (Sept. 2016)

Youth Director Kate Dilks recently announced the September 2016 Schedule for BLAST (our Youth Group).  The focus this month (and beyond!) will be John 8:12… When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”    NIV   Our goal at BLAST this year is to be a light to each other, to our church, and to our community, just as Jesus is our light and beacon of hope. Here are...

The Long and Winding Road (7/31/16)

Life is like a “Long and Winding Road.” We pass through a path of graduations, marriages, and births. But we also hit the valleys of job loss, divorce, and death. We long for something constant. On a winding mountain road, someone had been there before. The road is paved. Guardrails were installed. Someone keeps going through and maintains the road.

Is there someone like that in life? Are we traveling this road alone???

Special 10:15 Service will Remember 9-11 (9/11/16)

Can it be that it’s been 15 years already?  Most of us remember that fateful day when two planes crashed into the World Trade Center, a third crashed into the Pentagon, and a fourth into a field outside of Shanksville, PA. This anniversary isn’t anything to celebrate, but it is something to reflect upon. And so on Sunday September 11, we will hold a single worship service at 10:15.   Sunday School (all classes) will NOT be held this week. However, nursery will be available....

“THE POWER BEHIND YOU IS GREATER THAN THE PROBLEM AHEAD OF YOU.”
God has given us His Spirit which not only helps us through the problems of life, but it also helps us to a deeper joy that comes with a faithful relationship to God.

What Ever Happened to Laughter? (7/31/16- Camp Meeting)

Reminiscent of the famous Neil Diamond concert, the 7/31/16 Camp Meeting was a “Hot July Night.” It would have been easy to skip this one and stay at home in the air conditioning. Do we have to be as stuffy when we worship God? How does laughter fit into our call to honor God and to be reverent before His presence?
PUMC was the host church, and Pastor Jim gave the message. He challenged us to take a fresh look at laughter as a way to honor God.

Cheers: A Place Where Everybody Knows Your Name (7/24/16)

Like the sitcom Cheers, the Church needs to be a place where everybody knows your name… because Christ knows their name and they know Jesus’ Name. Pastor Jim used this 1980s sitcom to illustrate that the relationship we have with eachother is welcoming and powerful when it flows out of the relationship we have with Jesus Christ.
