Where’s it Say? (OT)
Throughout our lives we’ve heard the stories from the Old Testament. Many of them are very familiar, but do we know where they came from? This quiz will give you some familiar quotations and references to some well-known Old Testament stories. Select the scripture reference from which the quotation came. All quotations are from the King James Version.
#1. “Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee.”
#2. “But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles…”
Isaiah 40:31
28 Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding.
29 He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength.
30 Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall:
31 But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
KJV
#3. “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’ ” (NIV)
Jeremiah 29:11
This is one of the few verses in which the King James translation is less familiar than other versions. Most versions (including the New King James) use the words “hope” and “future.” But the KJV uses the words “peace” and “expected end.” God gave this promise to the Israelites who had just been exiled to Babylon…
11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
NIV
Here’s the KJV…
10 For thus saith the Lord, That after seventy years be accomplished at Babylon I will visit you, and perform my good word toward you, in causing you to return to this place.
11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.
12 Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you.
13 And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.
KJV
#4. “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.”
#5. “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life:”
Psalm 23:6
1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.
KJV
