Who Said That??? (OT)
One of the cool things about the Bible is that it’s full of people in real situations saying real things. The Old Testament is rich with characters such as prophets, patriarchs, and kings. In addition to the the theological and “teaching” verses that we like to memorize, there are a lot of statements by these people. Theses statements remind of us stories and situations. Given a statement from an Old Testament character, can you name the person who said it?
In each of the following quotes, select the person who is most known for saying it.

Got ’em all! But give it another shot… there are a lot of stories in the Old Testament.
Not quite- you missed at least one question. Keep trying…
#1. “Quick, let me have some of that red stew! I’m famished!… Look, I am about to die. What good is the birthright to me? “
Esau
Jacob and Esau were the twin sons of Isaac. Esau was born first, so as the eldest the birthright inheritance from his father belonged to him. But he didn’t care. One day he was hungry and wanted some stew that Jacob made. So he traded his birthright for a bowl of stew…
Genesis 25:29-34
29 Once when Jacob was cooking some stew, Esau came in from the open country, famished. He said to Jacob, “Quick, let me have some of that red stew! I’m famished!” (That is why he was also called Edom.)
31 Jacob replied, “First sell me your birthright.”
32 “Look, I am about to die,” Esau said. “What good is the birthright to me?”
33 But Jacob said, “Swear to me first.” So he swore an oath to him, selling his birthright to Jacob.
34 Then Jacob gave Esau some bread and some lentil stew. He ate and drank, and then got up and left.

#2. “If anyone ties me with seven fresh thongs that have not been dried, I’ll become as weak as any other man.”
Samson
God gave Samson supernatural strength and made him a leader in Israel. But Samson misused his power and ended up having an affair with Deliah. Unknown to Samson, Deliah was allied with Israel’s enemies, and she wanted to discover the secret of Samson’s strength so they could destroy him…
Judges 16:6-9
6 So Delilah said to Samson, “Tell me the secret of your great strength and how you can be tied up and subdued.”
7 Samson answered her, “If anyone ties me with seven fresh thongs that have not been dried, I’ll become as weak as any other man.”
8 Then the rulers of the Philistines brought her seven fresh thongs that had not been dried, and she tied him with them. With men hidden in the room, she called to him, “Samson, the Philistines are upon you!” But he snapped the thongs as easily as a piece of string snaps when it comes close to a flame. So the secret of his strength was not discovered.

#3. “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.”
Adam
Adam and Eve were living in perfect union with God in the Garden of Eden. But then they decided to disobey God by eating from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, and the relationship was broken. Adam and Eve hid from God…
Genesis 3:6-10
6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.
8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?”
10 He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.”

#4. “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will depart. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised.”
Job
Job was a righteous man who lived during the time of Abraham. He was wealthy; he owned large numbers of cattle, oxen and servants. He also had seven sons and three daughters. Everything was going perfectly. Then one day, tragedy struck and he lost everything- except his faith…
Job 1:20-22
20 At this, Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground in worship 21 and said:
“Naked I came from my mother’s womb,
and naked I will depart.
The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away;
may the name of the Lord be praised.”
22 In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing.
NIV
#5. “I will place a wool fleece on the threshing floor. If there is dew only on the fleece and all the ground is dry, then I will know that you will save Israel by my hand, as you said.”
Gideon
God called Gideon to destroy the altar of the god Baal, causing the Midianites and others to join forces to fight against Israel. God promised to defend Israel, but Gideon wanted proof…
Judges 6:36-38
36 Gideon said to God, “If you will save Israel by my hand as you have promised— look, I will place a wool fleece on the threshing floor. If there is dew only on the fleece and all the ground is dry, then I will know that you will save Israel by my hand, as you said.”
And that is what happened. Gideon rose early the next day; he squeezed the fleece and wrung out the dew — a bowlful of water.
