Greater NJ Annual Conference Set to… Conference (5/22/16)

We United Methodists operate in an environment of what we call The Connection; we’re not alone.  Together with other United Methodists we can pole our resources and accomplish much more for the building of God’s Kingdom than we could on our own. Pitman United Methodist Church is a member of…. the Delaware Bay District… which is a member of the Greater New Jersey Annual Conference… which is part of the Northeastern Jurisdiction… which is part of the global...

PUMC Enters a Construction Zone!

Roads are great… we use them all the time! But that’s part of the problem.  After years of rain, ice, snow, salt, and plowing, roads wear out.  They get pot holes.  The sidewalks become… unwalkable. Unfortunately, that also applies to the roads surrounding our church.  Our church building is located on the corner of Lambs Road (county road 635) and Broadway (County road 553A), and both roads are now undergoing serious work.   The Plan… Broadway and Lambs are county...

PUMC Celebrates 130th Anniversary with a Special Sunday (11/1/15)

On November 10 1885, the “Pitman Grove Methodist Episcopal Church” was “organized”,  and what we now know as the “Pitman United Methodist Church”- was born.  Our church is now 130 years old! On November 1 2015 we celebrated!  Our usual 9:30 and 11:00 services merged into a single 10:15 service of worship, and we all got together in the Fellowship Hall afterwards for a covered dish luncheon. It was a homecoming of sorts, and Pastor Jim’s sermon was...

Youth Lead the Way!!!

Sometimes adults think of youth as “so and so’s son or daughter” or of a demographic that we somehow need to attract and create programs for. But the people we call “Youth” are a dynamic part of our church. Recently we have seen three examples of their leadership and how they have contributed to our church and its mission.  The list could go way beyond these three items, but here’s a taste of the contributions that they are always making…   1: ...

Eagle Scout Candidate Takes on Needed Project (5/10/15)

Rakes, shovels, snow blowers, shovels… where do you put them?  If you’re a homeowner,  you probably store them in your garage or in a garden shed.  But if you’re a church, you also need a place to store them.  We’re called to be good stewards of all God has entrusted us with… even rakes and shovels. Ever since we moved into our new building in 2008, this has been an issue.  Snowblowers, gas cans, and other items have been stored under tarps; hidden away in any...

Tuesday Nighters Decorate the Sanctuary (11/25/14)

Many of us took a night away form our usual  Tuesday night studies to help our church prepare for Christmas.  “Christ” “Mas” literally means “celebration of Christ,” and one of the things that  focuses us and helps us to Celebrate Christ  is the traditional decorations of trees, garlands, and Nativity Scenes. Both before and after the usual Tuesday night dinner, we “hung the greens” and got into the Christmas spirit.   Here’s a quick ...

PUMC Marks its 129th Anniversary! (11/10/14)

Our church has a long history, beginning with a Sunday School class that started in November of 1877.  This class grew out of the summer Camp Meetings which were held in the Pitman Grove. But the “official start” of the “Pitman Grove Methodist Episcopal Church” came 15 years after this initial class was formed.    Here’s an excerpt from the booklet “Our Heritage” which was written 1n 1985 in commemoration of our centennial… On November 10, 1885,...

DS Rev. Jisun Kwak Visits PUMC (8/3/14)

Our new District Superintendent, Rev. Dr. Jisun Kwak,  is busy trying to meet the people and churches of the Delaware Bay district. Our district is made up of 68 churches covering parts of Salem, Cumberland, and Gloucester counties (the district office is in Woodstown).  So it’s quite an undertaking for a new District Superintendent to become acquainted with all of the churches in our district. On Sunday August 3, we were honored to worship with Rev. Kwak during our 11:00 service. After...

There’s a lot of excitement around our church with the arrival of our new pastor, Rev. Jim Bolton. But our previous pastors have moved on and their new churches are welcoming them also.  Rev. Dr. Larry Potts (formerly our Senior Pastor) is now serving at the Franklinville UMC, and Rev. Kee Young Yang (formerly our Associate Pastor) is now serving at the St. Paul’s UMC in Bayhead NJ. The church websites of these churches offer a glimpse into the arrival of their new pastors…...

PUMC Welcomes the Boltons! (7/6/14)

We welcomed Rev. Jim Bolton, wife Judy, and daughters Rebecca and Lindsey during their first Sunday with us on July 6.  As Rev. Bolton said at the beginning of the service, “Worship should be fun!”  And it certainly was an uplifting celebration as the Boltons joined our church family.  A pastor is not only the guy in the pulpit, but he (or she) is also a vital part of our church family.  We are thrilled that the Boltons now call PUMC their home! Who Am I???   Pastor Jim and his...

Communion will be celebrated during both services.  The second service will also feature the initial get-together of “Pastor’s Pals” (the children’s sermon).  So if you’re young enough to join Pastor Jim (or feel young enough to be with the kids), plan on coming down to the...

Congregation says Goodbye to Pastor Larry and Pastor Kee (6/15/14)

Sunday June June 15 was Father’s Day, but another issue weighed on our minds as we worshiped on that morning.  Several months ago it was announced that the Greater New Jersey Annual Conference had decided to not re-appoint Rev. Dr. Larry Potts to our church as our senior pastor.  Instead, he will be appointed to the Franklinville UMC. In addition, our Associate Pastor, Rev. Kee Young Yang will be appointed as the senior pastor of the St. Paul’s UMC in Bayhead NJ. Pastors in the...
