Our missions trip to La Palmilla ended several weeks ago, but missions leader (and PUMC’er) Jennifer Andrade has remained in Mexico for a few more weeks. She recently sent the following update…
Missions in La Palmilla, Veracruz, Mexico…
Missions and ministry are alive and well in the rural village of La Palmilla! This past July, a
Mission Team, sponsored by our church, went to La Palmilla for a week to work alongside of our brothers in Christ on the continued construction of the La Palmilla Methodist Church’s new sanctuary. The construction was started 16 years ago and is not yet complete, but there is definitely a light at the end of the tunnel! The congregation of the La Palmilla church welcomed the team with open arms. The Mission Team lived, ate, worked, worshipped, rested and played side by side with our brothers and sisters in Christ. What a blessing on both sides!
Interestingly enough, while the Mission Team was there, three young people ages 14, 18, and 22, went away to a Missionary Workshop for two weeks and served an indigenous group in an even poorer community in the state of San Luis Potos. They returned to report on how blessed they are in La Palmilla to have a daily work wage of $10 USD instead of the measly $3.50 USD daily wage in the community where the youth served. Wow! Talk about perspective!
After the Mission Team left at the end of July, Jennifer Andrade spent the next three weeks working on behalf of the sponsors who sent money down to help children and youth start school at the end of August. She and her assistant, Liz Aitken (who flew down from Michigan to help), bought school supplies for 155 school-age children. They then made arrangements to shop with each child/youth for shoes, backpacks, and or uniforms. The school supplies were then sorted and bagged for each student and passed out at the church in time for classes to begin. Sponsors have or will receive a picture of their child and a hand written thank you note (translated into English). There were 155 happy children and grateful parents. God received the glory!
Some members of the Mission Team will be sharing with the congregation more about their trip soon. May God bless each and everyone of you who have supported these ministries in one way or the other.
