Can You be Googled?

When designing a website, one of the first things you’ll hear about is “SEO”- Search Engine Optimization.  One of the top goals of any website is to show up on the top of that first page when somebody does an Internet search.

Search engine providers use things known as “crawlers” or “robots” which constantly search the Internet to build up their database of search terms and sites.  If you’re managing a website, you want to use terms that these “robots” will latch on to.

Give it a shot.

Open up a new tab in your browser and use Google to search for “OFH”. Around our church, “OFH” means “Our Father’s House” (our preschool). But if you Google “OFH”, you’ll more likely see references to sites talking about “Old Folks Home.”

If you refine your search a bit more and Google “Our Fathers House” you’ll start to see something closer to our preschool. But still, a lot of things are named “Our Fathers House” (or “Our Father’s House”).

Now try Googling “Our Father’s House Preschool”. Using the right search term brings you to our church’s website where you can learn about OUR Our Father’s House.

And so the lesson for those who write material for websites and design the structure of categories and tags and other snippets of text that show up within the site is to use terms that will help search engines draw visitors to your site.  In the above example,  the easier “OFH” abbreviation gets us lost in the crowd, but the words “Our Father’s House Preschool” puts our site at the top of the list.

So What’s that got to do with God???

Here’s an interesting verse from the book of 2 Chronicles…

2 Chron 16:7-9

7 At that time Hanani the seer came to Asa king of Judah and said to him: “Because you relied on the king of Aram and not on the Lord your God, the army of the king of Aram has escaped from your hand.

8 Were not the Cushites and Libyans a mighty army with great numbers of chariots and horsemen? Yet when you relied on the Lord, he delivered them into your hand.

9 For the eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him. You have done a foolish thing, and from now on you will be at war.”

“The Eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth…”  Like a search engine, God sees the little things you do.  He knows about things like “Old Folks Home” and “Our Father’s House Preschool.”  If He finds something that we’re doing to build His Kingdom, He will “strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to Him.” He will provide the resources and encouragement that we need for His service.

If God were to manage an Internet search engine, what terms or activities or deeds (good or bad) would trigger a link to your “website” (or your life)?  If people searched for something that glorifies God, would you show up in the search results?

When looking for the things of God, can you be Googled???
