What will We Learn???

Each night will focus on a specific need that we all run into.  And the answer to that need is to “Trust Jesus”… always:

Mon:  When we wonder, we can trust Jesus
Tues:  When we feel alone, we can trust Jesus
Wed:  When we feel powerless, we can trust Jesus
Thu:  When we need hope, we can trust Jesus
Fri:    When we need help, we can trust Jesus

Things Go South….

Sometimes we’re cruising along, checking off our “to-do list” when all of a sudden we run into a road block.  Have you ever:

Jumped into your car, turned the key…

only to hear “click-click-click” instead of “Varoooom”?

Gone to the utility room expecting to retrieve clothes out of the washing machine…

only to be greeted by a big puddle of water on the floor?

Turned on your cell phone needing to make an important call…

only to discover you’ve got “0%” left on your battery?

Arrived in the airport gate at 9:50 AM….

only to discover that the plane departed at 8:50 AM?

For adults (and kids) life can get wild.  We think we know what we’re going to do and how we’re going to get to where we want to go, but life throws us a curve.  Things don’t work out the way we planned and expected.  When that happens, frustration sets in.  We feel angry.  We don’t know what to do next, we’re lost and we’re afraid.

Sometimes we even begin to doubt ourselves and wonder why we even try.

Where do we turn???  Call AAA, Call 911?  Turn into yourself and sulk?  Open the hood and stare at the engine hoping it will fix itself?  Sometimes life can be like a frozen tundra.  We think we’re ok and headed in the right direction, but then all of a sudden we realize we’re lost.  We take matters into our own hands and get even more lost.

How can we get grounded, find the answer, find purpose, and then move on in the right direction?

Trusting Your True North….

A leaky washing machine, a dead battery, or a missed flight isn’t the end of the world.  In fact, those things can’t be avoided:  it’s life.  And when these difficulties jump into our paths, we need to get back on track and return to the priorities.  We need help to get through the problem and then we need help to find our way back to the path we need to be traveling.

But before we can do that, we need to identify our priorities, and we have to know which path we need to be traveling.

Pointing toward Jesus, True North VBS shows us that Jesus is a faithful friend who we can always trust.  Knowing Jesus is our priority, and He reveals the path we need to follow. He’s our True North!  Here are a few promises that Jesus made:

(click on the “Prev” and “Next” buttons to consider each promise.)

Jesus answered, I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.   (John 14:6)

.

“… I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— the Spirit of truth…  The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him, but you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.”     (John 14:15-18)
Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.   (John 6:35

.

When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12)

.

I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture.   “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. (John 10:9,11)
“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. (John 15:5)

.

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die. (John 11:25)

.

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,  and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”    (Mathew 28:19-20)

Connecting with Our True North…

Jesus spoke to a community of farmers and shepherds living in vineyards without the benefit of electric lights.  If was a different age and an unfamiliar culture.  But the thrust of His promises are things we need today, just as much as His contemporaries.  Like those first century people, we too need a source of Truth, of direction, of Life.

We can’t just pull out a compass or check our phone’s GPS.  We don’t see Jesus physically.  We can’t text Him, visit His website, or set up an appointment to meet with Him in his office.

But God has given us other tools.  He’s told us about Himself in scripture.  He directs people to act on our behalf and uses them to express His will and love.  God has given us the power of prayer and backs it up with His continual presence.  The Holy Spirit is something inside of us, given by God.  It’s a nudge, an inspiration, or a burst of wisdom.  God is with us.  His presence gives us hope.

When we’re lost, it can be scary.  We need someone who knows the way home; someone who can be our friend and calm our fears.  We need someone who will always be there; someone we can trust.

We all need a guide in this world that’s so wide open; Jesus is that Guide!

Let’s trust in Jesus wherever He leads us.
