A Tradition Continues…

This is PUMC’s 16th annual Easter Egg hunt!  The pandemic interrupted it in 2020, scaled it back in 2021, but the Hunt is back in full  force.  Last April over 300 children (“of all ages”) collected a couple thousand plastic eggs filled with goodies.  Here’s a taste of some previous Egg Hunts:

Easter Eggs- Really???

Why would a church buy into this worldly tradition of Magic Shows and Easter Eggs?

For starters, Jesus came to bring all of us a full life, and He inspires each of us to use our God-Given talents and possessions to help each other find that life for ourselves. Wellbeing and fulfillment depend on healthy and vibrant relationships.  Relationships between a church and its community and relationships between parents and their children must be cultivated.

So this morning of “magic” and Easter Egg Hunting is a chance for community and families to gather together to share experiences and to make memories which strengthen our relationships.

And the Easter Egg Hunt gives us spiritual lessons that can help each of us strengthen our relationship to God.  If God is everywhere and if we can’t get away from His presence (Psalm 139:1-18), then doesn’t it stand to reason that we can see God and grow closer to Him in every situation?  What can we learn about God from an Easter Egg Hunt???

Just like opening a plastic egg to get the goodies inside, click on the below “drop down boxes” to open some spiritual nuggets of about God’s love.  Consider the following as you watch your kids scramble to collect the eggs…..

God Treasures You!

Easter egg hunts are a fun way for families to spend time together. And, they also provide a great teaching opportunity. Through the death of Christ on the cross, God is offering us something much more valuable than candy inside a plastic egg. He urges us to seek for the Spiritual things that bring us closer to God.

Consider these words of Jesus…

“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.  “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls.  When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.

Matt 13:44-46,  NIV

So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.  But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

Matt 6:31-34, NIV

Enjoy the Easter Egg Hunt!  But use this opportunity to teach your children about the Real Treasures that God is offering us.  “Seek and Ye shall find…”

...even if you're broken!

When the eggs are scattered on the ground, they frequently break open and the goodies spill out (that’s why we always use WRAPPED candy).  And yet, the frantic moments of the Hunt don’t prevent us from scooping up the broken contents and adding them to our collection of treasures.

Broken eggs are not rejected, and God does not reject people who earnestly turn to Him to accept His love.  At the end of his life, the apostle Paul called himself the “worst of sinners”!  In his letter to Timothy, he summed up his life:   “Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst.  But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience as an example for those who would believe in him and receive eternal life.” (1 Timothy 1:15-16)

You’ve probably heard the joke, “the building will fall in on me if I go to that church.”  We somehow think we’re not good enough for God.

“If He knew what I really thought and what I had done, He’d want no part of me.”

Well… God DOES know what we really think and what we’ve done and we’ve done.  And yet, just like that broken egg that you scoop up anyway, God still loves you!

How do we know that?  Jesus said that He has “come that they may have life, and have it to the full.  “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. ” (John 10:10-11).

And He backed it up by submitting to a Roman Cross.  He willingly endured everything that the world threw at Him.  He did that so that He could “scoop you up”… much like those broken eggs that we pick up.

... even if it doesn't make sense.

Why would a church host a “Magician”??? God is control of everything; there are no demons or “magical powers” that deserve our worship.   We might watch a “Magic Trick”, scratch our heads, and think

“How’d he do That???”

Even if we can’t figure it out, we know there’s some sleight of hand or detail that causes us to think something happened that didn’t really happen.

God’s bigger than us.  He can do a lot of things and we don’t have the brain power to understand how (or why) He does what He does.  We can only trust in God’s power and goodness, and leave it at that.

During a “Magic Show” we can marvel at the performer’s skills and not understand “how he did that,” and yet trust that there is a logical explanation.  During “real life” experiences, we can trust that Demons or evil powers aren’t spinning the world out of control; our loving Heavenly Father has the world in His hands.  The song called “Firm Foundation“,  includes the line “I’ve got peace that makes no sense.”   Peace that makes no sense…  All we can do is just marvel at God’s greatness and trust in His goodness, and then accept the peace that He offers us.

Why Eggs?????

Eggs are symbolic of Life, and Easter Egg Hunts have long been part of the local church’s tradition.  Check out the following video that was posted on the UMC.org website:
