Quiz! Sermon on the Mount Sermon Series (July 2024)

Posted by on Jul 10, 2024 in Bible Study, Sermons, Worship & Prayer | 0 comments

During the month of July 2024, Pastor Mike has scheduled a series of sermons on Matthew 5-7.  This section of scripture is more commonly known as the “Sermon on the Mount.”  Jesus may have given it at one time at one place, or maybe the “sermon” is a collection of Jesus’ teachings which He gave on many occasions.  Whichever, this “sermon” contains teachings that are core to our beliefs and behavior as disciples.

How Well do You Know “The Sermon on the Mount?”

Our “Weekly Quiz” Page features a different quiz each week.  The quizzes come from a pool of 15 quizzes (as of this writing), and each one is cycled in from week to week.

One of the quizzes in this pool is on the Sermon on the Mount.  This quiz is currently scheduled to appear as the “Weekly Quiz” at the beginning of August.  But in preparation for this summer sermon series, the “Sermon on the Mount” quiz is also presented below so you can get a head start on Pastor Mike’s sermons.

Here’s the quiz!  Give it your best shot.  Or actually, give it your best shotS… the questions will change slightly on each attempt, so keep trying until you get all the questions.

Sermon on the Mount

Matthew chapter 5 through 7 contain what is commonly known as the “Sermon on the Mount.”  Whether it’s one complete sermon or a compilation of different teachings of Jesus, we may never know.  This quiz focuses on the beginning of this sermon, Matthew 5:1-30.
This quiz has five questions randomly selected from a larger pool.  The questions will change on each attempt, so keep trying!

#1. When are you blessed (in the words of “The Message”)?

When you’ve “worked up a good appetite for God.”

According to Oswald Chambers, “The underlying foundation of Jesus Christ’s kingdom is poverty, not posessions; not making decisions for Jesus, but having such a sense of absolute futility that we finally admit, ‘Lord, I can’t even begin to do it.’ ” (“My Utmost for His Highest”, July 21)

Matthew 5:1-12

1  When Jesus saw his ministry drawing huge crowds, he climbed a hillside. Those who were apprenticed to him, the committed, climbed with him. Arriving at a quiet place, he sat down 2 and taught his climbing companions. This is what he said:

3 “You’re blessed when you’re at the end of your rope. With less of you there is more of God and his rule.

4 “You’re blessed when you feel you’ve lost what is most dear to you. Only then can you be embraced by the One most dear to you.

5 “You’re blessed when you’re content with just who you are — no more, no less. That’s the moment you find yourselves proud owners of everything that can’t be bought.

6 “You’re blessed when you’ve worked up a good appetite for God. He’s food and drink in the best meal you’ll ever eat.

7 “You’re blessed when you care. At the moment of being ‘carefull,’ you find yourselves cared for.

8 “You’re blessed when you get your inside world — your mind and heart — put right. Then you can see God in the outside world.

9 “You’re blessed when you can show people how to cooperate instead of compete or fight. That’s when you discover who you really are, and your place in God’s family.

10 “You’re blessed when your commitment to God provokes persecution. The persecution drives you even deeper into God’s kingdom.

11 “Not only that — count yourselves blessed every time people put you down or throw you out or speak lies about you to discredit me. What it means is that the truth is too close for comfort and they are uncomfortable. 12 You can be glad when that happens — give a cheer, even! — for though they don’t like it, I do! And all heaven applauds. And know that you are in good company. My prophets and witnesses have always gotten into this kind of trouble.

#3. MESSAGE: Why are we here?

to bring out the God-Flavors of this earth

We are here to show people who God is; God isn’t a secret to be kept.

Matthew 5:13-16

13 “Let me tell you why you are here. You’re here to be salt-seasoning that brings out the God-flavors of this earth. If you lose your saltiness, how will people taste godliness? You’ve lost your usefulness and will end up in the garbage.

14 “Here’s another way to put it: You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We’re going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. 15 If I make you light-bearers, you don’t think I’m going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I’m putting you on a light stand. 16 Now that I’ve put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand — shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you’ll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven.

#4. Complete verse 15: “Neither do people light a ___ and put it under a ___.”

Neither do people light a LIGHT and put it under a BOWL

Matthew 5:14-16…

14 “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.

15 Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.

16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.

#5. MESSAGE: According to verse 17, what did Jesus intend to do with the Scriptures (the Law and the Prophets)?

Put it all together

Matt 5:17-20

“Don’t suppose for a minute that I have come to demolish the Scriptures — either God’s Law or the Prophets. I’m not here to demolish but to complete. I am going to put it all together, pull it all together in a vast panorama. 18 God’s Law is more real and lasting than the stars in the sky and the ground at your feet. Long after stars burn out and earth wears out, God’s Law will be alive and working.

19 “Trivialize even the smallest item in God’s Law and you will only have trivialized yourself. But take it seriously, show the way for others, and you will find honor in the kingdom. 20 Unless you do far better than the Pharisees in the matters of right living, you won’t know the first thing about entering the kingdom.
