It does get a bit confusing…
- PUMC is part of the Delaware Bay District...
- The Delaware Bay District is part of the Greater New Jersey Annual Conference
- The Greater New Jersey Annual Conference is part of the Northeast Jurisdiction
- The Northeast Jurisdiction is part of the United Methodist Church!
And, once a year, the Greater New Jersey Annual Conference holds a conference in Wildwood NJ. Notice the lower case “c” in the word for “meeting”… this distinguishes it from the upper case “C” in the word that means a big collection of churches.
And, the “conference” (“meeting”) gathers once a year, so you could also call this an “annual conference” of the “Annual Conference”….
OK, ’nuff said!
2014’s conference…
To get a flavor of what happens, take a look at the below post about the conference that was held a few years ago…
This year’s annual conference
This year’s conference (“meeting”) will be held in Wildwood starting on Sunday May 21 and ending on the afternoon of Tuesday May 23. The conference generally is made up of two flavors.
First (maybe not foremost) is the “business stuff.” Reports will be submitted. Budgets will be discussed. Amendments will be proposed. And Roberts Rules of Order will assert a strong presence. Motions will be seconded, debated, and voted on.
Second, the conference also includes a lot of “fellowship” (catching up with friends from across the state) and worship and learning. Here are a few highlights on the schedule…
- Commissioning and Ordination Service
– Clergy are ordained as full elders, deacons, or commissioned as Provisional Elders
– Sunday, 7:00 PM - Episcopal Address
– Bishop Schol gives his annual “State of the Conference” challenge
– Monday, 9:00 AM - Service of Remembrance and Communion
– Clergy, family, and lay members who passed away this year are honored
– Monday, 11:00 AM - Workshops
– Members attend a selection of workshops on increasing our church’s vitality
– Monday, 3:45 PM - Mission Project:Rise Against Hunger
– Members pack meals to help feed the local hungry
– Monday, 3:45 PM
