Who Said That??? (NT)
One of the cool things about the Bible is that it’s full of people in real situations saying real things. There are many familiar verses declaring a point of theology (such as “All things work together for good…”). But what about the people involved in the stories of the Bible? Does the quote remind you of a story, and can you name the person who said it?
In each of the following quotes, select the person who is most known for saying it. Note that the questions in this quiz come from an unusually large pool, so keep trying. You’ll see 5 of the questions on each attempt.

You’re listening well! You knew who said all of these things.

Hmmmm… There were some good guesses, but you missed at least one. Give it another try.
#1. “Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb to be born!”
Nicodemus
The Pharisee Nicodemus secretly disagreed with his colleagues about Jesus, so one night he slipped away to talk with Jesus. Jesus opened this conversation with the statement, “you must be born again.” Thinking about literal birth, Nicodemus was confused. Towards the end of this discussion, Jesus made the famous statement of John 3:16 (“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son…”)
John 3:3-4
3 In reply Jesus declared, “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.”
4 “How can a man be born when he is old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb to be born!”
NIV
#2. “What is Truth?!?”
Pilate
“Truth,”, “Right”, “Wrong,”… these are answers we seek even today. But we can’t define right and wrong; Truth isn’t subjective. Truth is defined by God’s will and character, and the condemned prisoner who was standing before Pilate embodied that Truth.
John 18:37-39
37 “You are a king, then!” said Pilate.
Jesus answered, “You are right in saying I am a king. In fact, for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.”
38 “What is truth?” Pilate asked. With this he went out again to the Jews and said, “I find no basis for a charge against him.
NIV
#3. “Lord, if it’s you, tell me to come to you on the water.”
Peter
The disciples were in a boat being pummeled by a terrible storm, when they some something resembling Jesus approaching them… walking on the water!
Matt 14:28 & 30
28 “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”
30 … Lord, save me!”
NIV
#4. “Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you.”
Mary
When Jesus was 12 years old, Mary and Joseph had visited Jerusalem for the Passover. After the Passover, they returned back to Galilee with large crowd who had also made the trip. Along the way, Mary and Joseph realized that Jesus was not with them. They rushed back to Jerusalem and found Jesus in the Temple…
Luke 2:48-50
48 When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you.”
49 “Why were you searching for me?” he asked. “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?”
NIV
#5. “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?”
Cleopas and Friend
A few days after Jesus’ crucifixion, two despondent disciples (one named Cleopas, the other un-named) left Jerusalem to return home(?) to the nearby village of Emmaus. Along the way, the resurrected Jesus appeared and joined in their discussion.
Luke 24:30-32
30 When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight.
32 They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?”
NIV
