Hands-On Mission! Pitman UMW will be hosting a Hands-On Mission Event for all women on Wednesday evening, October 8th. We will be packing Sewing Kits for the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). Sewing kits foster independence rather than dependence. Women can make clothing in their own size and in the style of their culture. Cottage industries often grow out of the sewing classes where women use these kits to practice valuable income-generating skills.
Beginning in September, we will have collection baskets in the Narthex. For each sewing kit, we are collecting:
3 continuous yards of fabric
Cotton or cotton blend only;
No heavy duty, corduroy, knit, etc.;
No patriotic, religious, holiday, camouflage, or military patterned fabric.
1 pair scissors
Fabric scissors only.
1 package needles
Hand needles in original packaging only.
1 spool thread
Medium to large spool;
No travel kit thread please.
5-8 buttons
5/8-inch size or larger;
No loose buttons;
Leave buttons in original packaging or fasten all together.
1 plastic bag
One-gallon size sealable bags only.
We can only collect the exact items on this list. Please, no substitutions. UMCOR cannot accept other items. Thank you for your support!
Kits are estimated to cost $18 in total. Imagine spending less than $20 to lift a woman and her family out of poverty, forever! Imagine changing the life of a child for less than the cost of Friday night pizza! Plan now to join us on October 8th.
