He unrolled the scroll and found the place where this was written:<\/p>\n<p>18 &#8220;The Spirit of the LORD is upon me,\u00a0 for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor.\u00a0 He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released,\u00a0 that the blind will see,\u00a0 that the oppressed will be set free,<\/p>\n<p>19 and that the time of the LORD&#8217;s favor has come.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>20 He rolled up the scroll, handed it back to the attendant, and sat down. All rights reserved.<\/span><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">You Get Out What You Put In&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<div class='et-box et-bio'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There&#8217;s a story about an older married couple who were walking out of a church on Sunday following the service.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The husband said to the wife,\n&#8220;<strong><em>Did you see the strange hat Mrs.O&#8217;Brien was wearing?<\/em><\/strong>&#8220;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8230;\u00a0\u00a0 &#8220;<strong><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">No, I didn&#8217;t<\/span><\/em><\/strong>,&#8221; replied his wife.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The husband remarked, &#8220;<strong><em>Bill, the usher badly needs a haircut, doesn&#8217;t he?<\/em><\/strong>&#8220;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8230;\u00a0\u00a0 The wife replied, &#8220;<strong><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Sorry dear, I didn&#8217;t notice.<\/span><\/em><\/strong>&#8220;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Then with a bit of impatience in his voice, the husband said,\n&#8220;<strong><em>You know Margaret,\u00a0 sometimes I wonder if you get anything at all out of going to church.<\/em><\/strong>&#8220;<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>What do you expect when you come to Sunday Worship?\u00a0 Unless you come expecting to have an encounter with the living God,\u00a0 all you&#8217;ll see is distractions.\u00a0 Think about the Israelites who showed up for Synagogue that one Saturday&#8230; what did they expect?\u00a0 What did they think when Jesus read this passage from Isaiah and then claimed that He was the fulfillment of it?<\/p>\n<p>This was something new; it demanded that they change course.\u00a0 Like them, do we need to have our &#8220;Spiritual GPSs&#8221; recalculated?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Keep Your Eyes on the Road&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Any GPS will warn you to &#8220;keep your eyes on the road&#8221;; don&#8217;t be playing with this electronic gadget when you should be watching traffic.\u00a0 In this passage, the thing that Jesus drew our attention to was the Scripture.\u00a0 And this was nothing new&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s always appropriate that Scripture be read and focused upon in the worship of God.\u00a0 Take a look at these Old Testament passages&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-container et_sliderfx_fade et_sliderauto_false et_sliderauto_speed_5000 et_slidertype_top_tabs'>\n\t\t\t\t<ul class='et-tabs-control'>\n\t\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tNEHEMIAH 8\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\t2 KINGS 23\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\t2 CHRONICLES 34\n\t\t<\/a><\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul> <!-- .et-tabs-control --> \n\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content'>\n\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-main-wrap'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-wrapper'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Nehemiah 8:1-3<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 All the people assembled as one man in the square before the Water Gate. They told Ezra the scribe to bring out the Book of the Law of Moses, which the Lord had commanded for Israel.<\/p>\n<p>So on the first day of the seventh month Ezra the priest brought the Law before the assembly, which was made up of men and women and all who were able to understand.\u00a0 He read it aloud from daybreak till noon as he faced the square before the Water Gate in the presence of the men, women and others who could understand. And all the people listened attentively to the Book of the Law.\u00a0 NIV\u00a0\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">2 Kings 23:1-3\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Then the king called together all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem.\u00a0 He went up to the temple of the Lord with the men of Judah, the people of Jerusalem, the priests and the prophets \u2014 all the people from the least to the greatest. He read in their hearing all the words of the Book of the Covenant, which had been found in the temple of the Lord.<\/p>\n<p>The king stood by the pillar and renewed the covenant in the presence of the Lord-to follow the Lord and keep his commands, regulations and decrees with all his heart and all his soul, thus confirming the words of the covenant written in this book. Then all the people pledged themselves to the covenant.\nNIV\n\t\t<\/div>\n<p>\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">2 Chronicles 34:14-18<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 While they were bringing out the money that had been taken into the temple of the Lord, Hilkiah the priest found the Book of the Law of the Lord that had been given through Moses.\u00a0 Hilkiah said to Shaphan the secretary, &#8220;I have found the Book of the Law in the temple of the Lord.&#8221; He gave it to Shaphan.<\/p>\n<p>Then Shaphan took the book to the king and reported to him: &#8220;Your officials are doing everything that has been committed to them.\u00a0 They have paid out the money that was in the temple of the Lord and have entrusted it to the supervisors and workers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Then Shaphan the secretary informed the king, &#8220;Hilkiah the priest has given me a book.&#8221; And Shaphan read from it in the presence of the king.\u00a0\u00a0 NIV\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div> <!-- .et-tabs-container -->\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We see the same thing in the early church.\u00a0 Reading the Bible isn&#8217;t a new thing that started after the printing press.\u00a0 Handwritten scrolls were part of the synagogues and churches from the beginning&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-container et_sliderfx_fade et_sliderauto_false et_sliderauto_speed_5000 et_slidertype_top_tabs'>\n\t\t\t\t<ul class='et-tabs-control'>\n\t\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tACTS 13:15\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tACTS 13:27\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\t2 CORINTHIANS 3:14\n\t\t<\/a><\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul> <!-- .et-tabs-control --> \n\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content'>\n\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-main-wrap'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-wrapper'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Acts 13:14-15<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 On the Sabbath they entered the synagogue and sat down.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\">After the reading from the Law and the Prophets<\/span>, the synagogue rulers sent word to them, saying, &#8220;Brothers, if you have a message of encouragement for the people, please speak.&#8221; NIV\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Acts 13:27<\/span><\/strong> \u00a0 The people of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize Jesus, yet in condemning him they fulfilled <span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\">the words of the prophets that are read every Sabbath<\/span>. NIV\n\t\t<\/div>\n<p>\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">2 Corinthians 3:14-15<\/span><\/strong> \u00a0\u00a0 But their minds were made dull, for to this day the same veil remains when the old covenant is read. It has not been removed, because only in Christ is it taken away. \u00a0 Even to this day <span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\">when Moses is read<\/span>, a veil covers their hearts. NIV\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div> <!-- .et-tabs-container -->\n<table style=\"height: 240px;\" width=\"588\" cellpadding=\"9\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><em><strong><span style=\"color: #003300;\">Then is it any wonder that scripture reading is a key part of our worship experience today?<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/td>\n<td>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Chapel-Bible-_0728041326-x600.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2803 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Chapel-Bible-_0728041326-x600-300x167.jpg\" alt=\"Chapel Bible _0728041326 x600\" width=\"300\" height=\"167\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Chapel-Bible-_0728041326-x600-300x167.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Chapel-Bible-_0728041326-x600.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In this passage we&#8217;re told that when He finished reading, Jesus &#8220;closed the book and He gave it to the minister, and sat down.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Scripture was read by standing up to show respect for the words of God. However, when the Rabbi or pastor was going to deliver the sermon, he sat down.\u00a0 This is what Jesus does after the reading.\u00a0 he sits down showing He was about to expound on the words just read.<\/p>\n<p>And expound Jesus did!\u00a0 His sermon is one of the\u00a0 shortest on record.\u00a0 Jesus simply says &#8220;<strong><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Today, the Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing<\/span><\/em><\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Keep Your Eyes Fastened\u00a0 on Jesus&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Verse 20 says, &#8220;<strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">All eyes in the synagogue looked at him intently.<\/span><\/strong>&#8221;\u00a0 Do our &#8220;spiritual eyes,&#8221; like a properly programmed GPS, keep us focused on the object of our worship?<\/p>\n<p>From Genesis to Revelation, all 66 books in the Bible point to Jesus.\u00a0 The name of the Bible&#8217;s last book, Revelation, is singular because only one thing is truly revealed:\u00a0 Jesus!\u00a0 It&#8217;s all about Jesus.\u00a0 When we hear the Bible read at worship, when you read the Bible at home daily in your devotions, do you see Jesus? Do you hear the voice of Jesus providing a word we need for that moment.\u00a0 Jesus knew exactly what the people needed to hear that day and He knows exactly what we need.\u00a0 And in both cases, Jesus stands ready to give us a word we need.<\/p>\n<p>As we read the Bible,\u00a0 do we see Jesus?\u00a0 Do we hear the word He wants to give us?\u00a0 Keep your eyes on &#8220;the road&#8221;&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>To hear Jesus, we need to get involved with the Scripture.\u00a0\u00a0 Don&#8217;t just read it&#8230; put yourself in it!\u00a0 Try out this sequence when reading a Bible passage:<\/p>\n<table border=\"ff\" cellspacing=\"2\" cellpadding=\"5\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"vertical-align: top;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000080;\">1<\/span><\/strong><\/td>\n<td>\u00a0Start by just reading the passage.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"vertical-align: top;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000080;\">2<\/span><\/strong><\/td>\n<td>Close your eyes and meditate on what you read.\u00a0 What&#8217;s it saying to you?<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"vertical-align: top;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000080;\">3<\/span><\/strong><\/td>\n<td style=\"vertical-align: top;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Read it again, but this time try to imagine that you&#8217;re in the room (or whatever location).\u00a0 You&#8217;re watching what&#8217;s going on.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">What&#8217;s Jesus wearing?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">What&#8217;s the rabbi&#8217;s expression as he hands the scroll to Jesus?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">What does the congregation do while Jesus is reading it?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">What&#8217;s Jesus&#8217; expression as He&#8217;s reading this passage?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Is His voice forceful, or is He nervous?\u00a0 Are His eyes intent, or are they soft?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">What&#8217;s the congregation&#8217;s reaction after Jesus speaks?\u00a0 What is the rabbi&#8217;s expression?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"vertical-align: top;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; with all of that variety of time,\u00a0 place, and circumstance the Bible is totally consistent!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.faithfortoday.tv\/article\/112\/programs\/archives\/the-evidence\/episodes\/episode-106-searching-for-god\/guests\/ralph-muncaster-bio\" target=\"_blank\">Ralph O. Muncaster<\/a> (who was once an atheist and staunch skeptic of the Bible) wrote&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">How rare it is today to see two different authors write articles on controversial topics&#8212; like sexual conduct, men and women&#8217;s\u00a0 roles, politics, or life after death&#8212; that agree point by point?\u00a0 <\/span><\/strong><\/em><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 &#8211;<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">From &#8220;Can You Trust the Bible&#8221; page 36<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Oh, these words CAN be trusted!\u00a0 The same God who gave them is the same God who has preserved them for us.\u00a0 Theologian <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charles_Hodge\" target=\"_blank\">Charles Hodge<\/a> put it this way,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Inspiration was an influence of the Holy Spirit on the minds\u00a0 of certain select men which rendered them the organs of God for the infallible communication of His mind and will.\u00a0 They were in such a sense the organs of God that what they said God said.<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>God used the personalities of the writers.\u00a0 It&#8217;s as if the Holy Spirit filtered Himself through these unique personalities so that we could identify with the Word they wrote and spoke.\u00a0 If the scriptures are not inspired by God, then the Bible is only a collection of opinions.<\/p>\n<p>But it IS inspired!\u00a0 And it can be used as our roadmap or GPS.<\/p>\n<p>The Bible remains the supreme and final source and standard of truth&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Psalm 119:60<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I will hasten and not delay to obey your commands.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>John 17:17<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It conveys God&#8217;s wisdom concerning the great questions of human existence:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Is there a God?<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">What is He like?<a href=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/question-25527__180.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6729 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/question-25527__180.png\" alt=\"question-25527__180\" width=\"186\" height=\"180\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">How Can we know Him?<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Who are we?<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Why are we on this planet?<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Why is there death and suffering?<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">What lies beyond the grave?<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">What does the future hold?<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">How do I know right from wrong?<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Plug in the GPS Before Traveling&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The Bible is like the GPS we have for our cars yet without the disembodied voice yelling at us! The Bible is His instruction manual on how to live for best results.<\/p>\n<p>BUT&#8230; we muse expose ourselves to the Bible, have our eyes fixed upon Jesus, and know that what we are reading is His word for us.\u00a0 In other words, a GPS doesn&#8217;t do any good if it&#8217;s locked inside the glove compartment!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-bio'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Henry Ironside, the famous Bible Teacher, told the following story&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A godly Irishman had come to California to recover from tuberculosis. The old man could barely speak because of his illness.\u00a0 But he opened his worn Bible and he simply, sweetly opened up truth after truth in a way that Ironside had never heard before.\u00a0 Before he knew it, Ironside had tears running down his cheeks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">He asked Frazer, &#8220;<em><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Where did you get all these things?\u00a0 Could you tell me where I could find a book that would open them up to me?\u00a0 Did you learn these things in some seminary or college?&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Frazer answered&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;<em><span style=\"color: #993366;\">My dear young man, I learned these things on my knees\u00a0 on the mud floor of a little sod cottage in the north of Ireland. There with my Bible open before me, I used to kneel for hours at a time and ask the Spirit of God to reveal Christ to my soul and to open the Word to my heart.\u00a0 He taught me more on my knees on that mud floor than I ever could have learned in all the seminaries or colleges in the world.<\/span><\/em>&#8220;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">(H.A. Ironside, &#8220;In the Heavenlies&#8221; pp86-87)<\/div><\/div>\n<p>I suspect we all own a Bible.\u00a0 But do we use it as the spiritual GPS that it is?\u00a0 In all due respect&#8230; we will not learn the Bible through osmosis. Our Bible&#8217;s have been gifted to us from God and all\u00a0 He asks is we consistently read, study, memorize,\u00a0 meditate,\u00a0 and preach from the Bible.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Keep the GPS In Your Car&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>On this Bible Sunday we give thanks that God has kindly gifted us with the Bible.\u00a0 We want to thank God that for us Bibles are freely available,\u00a0 and we&#8217;re free to read His word whenever we want.<\/p>\n<p>Yet there are as many as 51 countries where it remains illegal to carry a Bible down the street publicly.\u00a0\u00a0 Are we willing to do what Jesus states as His mission and purpose in Luke 4:18-19&#8230;.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&#8220;The Spirit of the LORD is upon me,\u00a0 for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor.\u00a0 He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released,\u00a0 that the blind will see,\u00a0 that the oppressed will be set free,<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">and that the time of the LORD&#8217;s favor has come.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, said this about the Bible&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">To be candid, reasonable men, I am not afraid to lay open what have been the inmost thoughts of my heart.\u00a0\u00a0 I have thought, I am a creature of a day, passing through life as an arrow through the air.\u00a0 I am a spirit come from God and returning to God; just hovering over the great gulf till, a few moments hence, I am no more seen.\u00a0 I drop into an unchangeable eternity.<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">I want to know one thing: The way to heaven.\u00a0 How to land safe on that happy shore.\u00a0 God Himself has condescended to teach the way; for this very end He came from heaven.\u00a0 He hath written it down in a book.<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\">O give me that book!\u00a0<\/span> At any price, give me the book of God!<\/span> <\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">&#8211; (John Wesley, edited by Albert C. Outler, Preface to Sermons, p89)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As we travel this road of life, do we use our GPS?\u00a0 Is it with us&#8230;\u00a0 in our hearts and minds as we take each step?<\/p>\n<p>In the synagogue that day, the people&#8217;s eyes were fixed upon Jesus.\u00a0 When it comes to the Bible, we can refuse to listen, we can refuse to believe, and we can refuse to let it make a difference for us&#8230; but it is still true!<\/p>\n<p>The Word of God stands forever, because the Word gives us life.
