It makes you feel good, affirmed, wanted and special. EVEN if the one singing to you is out of tune, off key, and can&#8217;t carry a tune in a bucket, the sound is sweet.<\/em><\/span><\/div><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Joash Tries to Bring God&#8217;s People Back in Tune&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Zephaniah?\u00a0 When&#8217;s the last time you read this book?!!?\u00a0 It was written somewhere around 622 BC.\u00a0 It mentions the &#8220;Day of the Lord&#8221; more than does any other book in the Old Testament, clarifying the picture of Judah&#8217;s fall to Babylon and the eventual judgement and restoration of all humanity in the future.\u00a0 In this case, it refers primarily to God&#8217;s impending time of judgement on the nation of Judah.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s some insight into what Zephaniah considered this Day of the Lord to Be.\u00a0 This is where Israel was headed&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<div class='tabs-left et_sliderfx_fade et_sliderauto_false et_sliderauto_speed_5000 et_slidertype_left_tabs clearfix'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='et_left_tabs_bg'><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<ul class='et-tabs-control'>\n\t\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tDestruction\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tImminent\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tWrath\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tJudgement\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tBUT&#8230;\u00a0\n\t\t<\/a><\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul> <!-- .et-tabs-control --> \n\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content'>\n\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-main-wrap'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-wrapper'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Zeph 1:1-2<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0 The Lord gave this message to Zephaniah when Josiah son of Amon was king of Judah. Zephaniah was the son of Cushi, son of Gedaliah, son of Amariah, son of Hezekiah.\u00a0 &#8220;I will sweep away everything from the face of the earth,&#8221; says the Lord.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\"> Zeph 1:4<\/span> <\/strong>\u00a0 &#8220;I will crush Judah and Jerusalem with my fist and destroy every last trace of their Baal worship. I will put an end to all the idolatrous priests, so that even the memory of them will disappear.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\"> Zeph 2:10<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0 They will receive the wages of their pride, for they have scoffed at the people of the Lord of Heaven&#8217;s Armies.\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Zeph 1:14\u00a0<\/span><\/strong> &#8220;That terrible day of the Lord is near. Swiftly it comes\u2014 a day of bitter tears, a day when even strong men will cry out.\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Zeph 1:15<\/span><\/strong> It will be a day when the Lord&#8217;s anger is poured out\u2014 a day of terrible distress and anguish, a day of ruin and desolation, a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and blackness,\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Zeph 1:17<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0 &#8220;Because you have sinned against the Lord, I will make you grope around like the blind. Your blood will be poured into the dust, and your bodies will lie rotting on the ground.&#8221;\n\t\t<\/div>\n<p>\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Zeph 3:17<\/span><\/strong> For the Lord your God is living among you. He is a mighty savior. He will take delight in you with gladness. With his love, he will calm all your fears. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs.&#8221;\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div> <!-- .tabs-left -->\n<p>Israel was out of tune with God; they had turned the worship of God into a fiasco.\u00a0 But God sent an 8 year old to be their king.\u00a0 And this young king helped to create a revival.<\/p>\n<p>In the 18th year of Josiah&#8217;s reign, Hilkiah the priest found in the temple a copy of the book of the law that had been ignored for decades.\u00a0 When he read it to the king, Josiah was broken.\u00a0 He humbled himself before the Lord and rent his clothes and wept (2 Kings 22:19).<\/p>\n<p>Over the next 13 years, Josiah led an amazing reformation in Judah based on the law of God. <a href='https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=2+kings+23&#038;version=NLT' class='small-button smallteal' target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> 2 Kings 23<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\n<li>He renewed the covenant between God and his people (2 Kings 23:3).<\/li>\n<li>He took all the vessels of Baal out of the Temple (2 Kings 23:5)<\/li>\n<li>Broke down the houses of the male cult prostitutes (2 Kings 23:7)<\/li>\n<li>Removed the horses that the kings of Judah had dedicated to the sun (2 Kings 23:22)<\/li>\n<li>Reinstituted the Passover that had been ignored since the days of the judges (2 Kings 23:22)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So when we see what was going on in Zephaniah&#8217;s day we can see how the prophet and the king&#8230; and God&#8230; were trying to draw the people back to God.<\/p>\n<p>Their sin had found them out.\u00a0 And yet, Zephaniah gives a message of hope, reminding his audience of a God who is crazy in love with His people!\u00a0 They could have looked at the bad things on the horizon and fallen into a &#8220;Woe is me&#8221; trap, but instead Zephaniah tried to get them back into tune.\u00a0 Instead, he said &#8220;look to the God who loves you more than He loves Himself.\u00a0 Look to the God who wants to be with you.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He takes great delight in you!<\/p>\n<p>Wouldn&#8217;t you like to go through a day where somebody didn&#8217;t remind you of your past?\u00a0 A day where you hear positive reinforcement and encouragement?\u00a0 That&#8217;s what God is doing here.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">God will Rejoice Over You!<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Look at what Zephaniah wrote in 3:17&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u00a0For the Lord your God is living among you.<\/span><\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">He is a mighty savior.<\/span><\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">He will take delight in you with gladness.<\/span><\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">With his love, he will calm all your fears. <\/span><\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">He will rejoice over you with joyful songs.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>God will come and live inside you.\u00a0 He&#8217;s going to make these broken pieces a clay a perfect dwelling.\u00a0 God is rejoicing, dancing, spinning around, enjoying you!<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-info'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> Rock Star???<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Hebrew words used for the phrase &#8220;rejoice over you&#8221; literally means &#8220;dance, skip, leap, and spin around in joy.&#8221;\u00a0 God dances with shouts of joy over us!\u00a0 The Hebrew language used in this text is very active.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not just &#8220;spin&#8221; like you&#8217;re getting dizzy; it means &#8220;spin around under violent emotion,&#8221;\u00a0 or basically &#8211; to dance!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When we see the original meaning of these words we come away with a God who resembles a rock star more than an old grandfatherly type sitting on a throne.<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n<p>With all DUE respect to God&#8230; in some ways God is like the dog who greets you when you come home (picture the father in the parable of the Prodigal Son!\u00a0 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Luke+15%3A11-32&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\">Luke\u00a015:11-32<\/a><\/span>).\u00a0 Wouldn&#8217;t it be cool if God treats us like our dog does?\u00a0 When we come in the door, our dog licks us senseless.\u00a0 Wags his tail.\u00a0 Jumps up and down.\u00a0 Dances.\u00a0 We want our dog to go nuts when we come home!\u00a0 This verse is saying that this is how God reacts when we come in His presence.<\/p>\n<p>God doesn&#8217;t want to smack you upside the head.\u00a0 Even in the face of the destruction of Jerusalem, He is rejoicing over them.\u00a0 Like a proud father of a little league baseball player, God actively encourages us from the stands and takes delight in us.<\/p>\n<p>The Israelites had let God down big time.\u00a0 They had forgotten Him.\u00a0 And yet He promises to &#8220;<strong><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">take delight in you with gladness.<\/span><\/em><\/strong>&#8221;\u00a0 Same thing with us.\u00a0 Even when we fail Him, He&#8217;s there to pick us up.\u00a0 He&#8217;s there to sing us a song.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">The Lord Your God is With You!<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In one of the most amazing verses in scripture, the Bible describes the deep and abiding love God has for us.\u00a0\u00a0 O how hard it is in this generation to believe that God loves us; that God cares for us; that God treasures us and that God is concerned about EVERY detail in our lives.<\/p>\n<p>He wants to be with us.\u00a0 But could it be that we underestimate the joy God has in His people?\u00a0 Could it be that we too often think God is annoyed, irritated, or angry with us?<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-bio'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'>&#8220;<strong><em><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Faulty as the Christian church is at times, the Lord rejoices in her. While we mourn, as well we may, yet we do not sorrow as those that are without hope; for God does not sorrow, his heart is glad, and he is said to rejoice with joy- a highly emphatic expression.<\/span><\/em><\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">-Charles Haddon Spurgeon, A Sermon for the Time Present, 1887<\/div><\/div>\n<p>God is inviting us on to the dance floor!\u00a0 What a word of hope, of encouragement.\u00a0 Can you think of anything more wonderful and more humbling? \u00a0 The Lord, the Creator God, Almighty God sings over you!\u00a0 No matter what is happening in our life, no matter our trials and mountains to climb, God is with us every step of the way.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<strong><em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Our hearts are restless until we find our rest in God.<\/span><\/em><\/strong>&#8221;\u00a0 Let God sing to you.\u00a0 Find your rest in Him.<\/p>\n<p>In 1958, rock star <a href=\"http:\/\/www.metrolyrics.com\/summertime-blues-lyrics-cochran-eddie.html\" target=\"_blank\">Eddie Cochran<\/a> recorded a song which has been covered many times over.\u00a0 It&#8217;s called &#8220;Summertime Blues.&#8221;\u00a0 Part of that song says &#8220;<strong><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">But there ain&#8217;t no cure for the summertime blues.<\/span><\/em><\/strong>&#8221;\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Sinatra_singer-63055_300x370.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-9093 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Sinatra_singer-63055_300x370-243x300.jpg\" alt=\"Sinatra_singer-63055_300x370\" width=\"141\" height=\"174\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Sinatra_singer-63055_300x370-243x300.jpg 243w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Sinatra_singer-63055_300x370.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 141px) 100vw, 141px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But friends, Zephaniah 3:17 tells us that God is a Singer, and that He Himself grabs the microphone and snuggles real close with His song.\u00a0 He wants to chase away your &#8220;summertime blues&#8221;!<\/p>\n<p>Great singers can take your hand (sometimes literally) and make you feel that they&#8217;re only singing to you.\u00a0 The song that they&#8217;re singing will lift you up. God can and wants to do the same thing for you.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Did God Speak&#8230; or Did He Sing?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Genesis chapter 1 tells us that the world came into existence when God &#8220;Said.&#8221;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>God Said:\u00a0 Let there be light<a href=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/globe-329567_640.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-5434\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/globe-329567_640-300x212.jpg\" alt=\"globe-329567_640\" width=\"189\" height=\"134\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/globe-329567_640-300x212.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/globe-329567_640.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 189px) 100vw, 189px\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>God said:\u00a0 Let there be an expanse between the waters<\/li>\n<li>God Said:\u00a0 Let there be dry ground<\/li>\n<li>God Said:\u00a0 Let there be vegetation<\/li>\n<li>God said:\u00a0 Let there be lights to separate the day from night<\/li>\n<li>God said:\u00a0 Let the water team with living creatures<\/li>\n<li>God said:\u00a0 Let the land produce living creatures<\/li>\n<li>God said:\u00a0 Let us make man in our own image<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>God Said&#8230;. and it was&#8230;. and it was good.<\/p>\n<p>But then Jesus comes along and John calls Him the Word.\u00a0 As we saw a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/?p=8625\" target=\"_blank\">few weeks ago<\/a><\/span>, Jesus is The Word who spoke everything into existence!<\/p>\n<p>When God was creating the world&#8230; speaking it into existence and calling it good, could it be that He was rejoicing over it with joyful songs?<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-bio'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> In the &#8220;Magicians Nephew, written by CS Lewis in The Chronicles of Narnia series, the character portraying God (Aslan) is found SINGING Narnia into existence!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Here&#8217;s what CS Lewis writes (page 62)&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">In the darkness something was happening at last.\u00a0 A voice had begun to sing&#8230; it seemed to come\u00a0 from all directions at once&#8230;\u00a0 its lower notes were deep enough to be the voice of the earth herself. There were no words.\u00a0 There was hardly even a tune.\u00a0 But it was beyond comparison, the most beautiful noise he had ever heard. It was so beautiful Digory could hardly bear it.<\/span><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote><\/div><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Creator, Rock Star&#8230; and Parent&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>According to the text, God is not only our Creator.\u00a0 He is our loving, caring encouraging, restoring, ever-present Parent.<a href=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/ChapelWin-Good-Shepherd-_DCP_7051xCropSheep.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-6085\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/ChapelWin-Good-Shepherd-_DCP_7051xCropSheep-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"ChapelWin- Good Shepherd _DCP_7051xCropSheep\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/ChapelWin-Good-Shepherd-_DCP_7051xCropSheep-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/ChapelWin-Good-Shepherd-_DCP_7051xCropSheep.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The prophet says that God is &#8220;in the midst&#8221; of us.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc;\">\n<li>He is &#8220;looking out for our best.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>He is &#8220;rejoicing over us.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>He will &#8220;rest in His love.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>He\u00a0 will &#8220;Sing to us.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Music is many things, but here it is comfort to the crying child.\u00a0 And so personal and intimate.\u00a0 God composes a song with us in mind, and sings it to us.\u00a0 Just like a mother who sings to her crying infant,\u00a0 God sings to us in the same way.\u00a0 Just as a baby focuses on his mother and even tries to sing with her, God wants us to focus on Him and to sing along.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">God Meets Us Where We Are&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>I love how John Piper describes it in his book &#8220;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/The-Pleasures-God-Meditations-Delight\/dp\/1576736652\" target=\"_blank\">The Pleasures of God<\/a><\/span>&#8221; (page 180).\u00a0 &#8220;When I hear God, I hear___<\/p>\n\n\t\t<div class='et-simple-slider et_sliderfx_fade et_sliderauto_false et_sliderauto_speed_4000 et_slidertype_simple'>\n\t\t\t<div class='et-simple-slides'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-wrapper'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The booming of Niagara Falls&#8230;<\/span><\/strong>\n\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t&#8230; mingled with the trickle of a mountain stream.\n\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The blast of Mt. Saint Helens&#8230;<\/span><\/strong>\n\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t&#8230; mingled with a kitten&#8217;s purr.\n\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The power of an East Coast hurricane&#8230;<\/span><\/strong>\n\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t&#8230; and the puff of a night snow in the winter.\n\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The unimaginable roar of the sun&#8230;<\/span><\/strong>\n\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t&#8230;mingled with the tender warm crackling of a cozy winter&#8217;s fireplace.\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div> <!-- .et-simple-slider -->\n\t\t\n<p>I love that description because it tells me that God meets us right where we are.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not like turning on the radio and hearing an awe inspiring song.\u00a0 God&#8217;s song is a song that&#8217;s very personalized.\u00a0 A song that&#8217;s written, orchestrated, and delivered just for YOU!\u00a0 God&#8217;s song for YOU is life affirming and very personal.\u00a0 Like the audience Zephaniah was writing to, when we too hear our rock star God singing in our ears and to our hearts, it&#8217;s awe inspiring, intimate, and transforming.<\/p>\n<p>God rejoices over us with singing.\u00a0 It&#8217;s the picture of pleased and joyful parent, but perhaps in this case more of a mother than a father.\u00a0 In the light of quieting us with His love and singing over us, doesn&#8217;t it make you think of the classic lullaby:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Hush little darling, don&#8217; t you cry.\u00a0 Mama&#8217;s gonna sing you a lullaby.\u00a0 <\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">And when that lullaby is through, Mama&#8217;s gonna stay right here with you.\u00a0 <\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">And if you wake up in the night, Mama&#8217;s gonna make everything all right.\u00a0 <\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Hush little darling don&#8217;t you weep.\u00a0 <\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Mamma&#8217;s gonna stay here until you sleep.<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>There&#8217;s an incredible tenderness and intimacy in Zephaniah 3 that in some ways is even stronger than the sentiments in that lullaby.\u00a0 God promises to come to us and quiet us with His love and rejoice over us with singing.<\/p>\n<p>Have you heard God&#8217;s song?\u00a0 If not, listen, look&#8230;
