All things were created through Him and for Him.<\/p>\n<p>17 And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.<\/p>\n<p>18 And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.<\/p>\n<p>19 For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should dwell,<\/p>\n<p>20 and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Opening Joke&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\t\t<div class='et-simple-slider et_sliderfx_fade et_sliderauto_false et_sliderauto_speed_5000 et_slidertype_simple'>\n\t\t\t<div class='et-simple-slides'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-wrapper'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-size: 14pt;\">Skip the Joke!<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Recommended. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 Click &#8220;next&#8221; to see the joke (not recommended)&#8230;<\/span><\/em><\/span>\n\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tA minister gave an unusual sermon one day using a peanut to make several important points about the wisdom of God in nature.<\/p>\n<p>One of the church members greeted him at the door and said, &#8220;<em><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Very interesting message, Pastor.\u00a0 I never expected to learn so much from a nut!<\/span><\/em>&#8221;<\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div> <!-- .et-simple-slider -->\n\t\t\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Review Time&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This is the third and final part of this look at Colossians 1, &#8220;The Supremacy of Christ.&#8221;<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #008000; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/?p=8675\" target=\"_blank\">Week 1<\/a><\/span>:<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0 We identified Jesus Christ as fully human and fully God.\u00a0 When it comes to everything and anything in life:\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #800080;\">It&#8217;s All About Jesus!<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #008000; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/?p=8625\" target=\"_blank\">Week 2<\/a><\/span>:\u00a0<\/span><\/strong> We identified that Jesus is the Creator and the Sustainer of all things in heaven and earth.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In both weeks we identified our call from God to be molded into the image of Jesus and our need to imitate Jesus in every area of our life.\u00a0 Here are two important things to keep in mind:<\/p>\n\n\t\t<div class='et-simple-slider et_sliderfx_slide et_sliderauto_true et_sliderauto_speed_3000 et_slidertype_simple'>\n\t\t\t<div class='et-simple-slides'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-wrapper'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #000080; font-size: 14pt;\">Jesus is God with Skin On!<\/span><\/strong>\n\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000080;\">It&#8217;s All About Jesus!!!<\/span><\/strong>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div> <!-- .et-simple-slider -->\n\t\t\n<div class='et-box et-bio'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #000000;\">H.G. Wells once said,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I&#8217;m a historian, I and not a believer, but I must confess as a historian that the penniless preacher from Nazareth is irrevocably the very center of history.\u00a0 Jesus Christ is easily the most dominant figure in all history.<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #088c32;\"><em><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">It&#8217;s All About Jesus!<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-bio'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Christian Church, for nearly 2000 years, has believed that Jesus Christ is supreme over all creation.\u00a0 They have handed down to us the truth that Jesus is the King of king and Lord of lords&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Check out the<\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Apostles'_Creed\" target=\"_blank\">Apostles Creed<\/a><\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">and the<\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oriental_Orthodoxy\" target=\"_blank\">Nicene Creed<\/a><\/span>.<\/div><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #088c32;\"><em><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">It&#8217;s All About Jesus!<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Could it be that our struggles today come because we want something other than Jesus? Is our attitude, &#8220;<em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Yeah we need Jesus.\u00a0 But we need Jesus and ___<\/span><\/em>&#8220;???<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do we <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/?p=8479\" target=\"_blank\">trust<\/a><\/span> Him with eternal life, but not with the day to day things?<\/li>\n<li>Do we give Him the keys to our sanctuary, but not to our entire house?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\">1:\u00a0 Jesus is the Beginning of the Christian Church<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>In verse 18 of our text (Colossians 1), Paul writes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.<\/span> <\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In other words, it can be said that Jesus is the Beginning of the Church.<\/p>\n<p>Yes- we think of Pentecost as being the Church&#8217;s birthday.\u00a0 But the church has always been in the Mind of God and it finds its full expression in the person of Jesus.<\/p>\n<p>If there was no Jesus, there would be no Church!<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-warning'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A skeptic might look at verse 18 and say,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\"> &#8220;Ah Ha!!! It says that Jesus had a beginning. Therefore, He can&#8217;t be the eternal God!!! Gotcha!!!&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But look at the original Greek.\u00a0\u00a0 The Greek word used for &#8220;Beginning&#8221; in verse 18 is &#8220;Arche.&#8221;\u00a0 This means the start of a long list of things.\u00a0 For example, &#8220;A&#8221; is the beginning of the alphabet and &#8220;1&#8221; the beginning of (counting) numbers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And it also means First in Originating Power.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Just like there are no letters before &#8220;A&#8221;, there is nothing before Jesus!\u00a0 The &#8220;Beginning&#8221; here means the source from which something came&#8230; out of nothing!<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n<p>The Church is something new; it&#8217;s supposed to be different.\u00a0 It was always in the mind of God and was revealed when Jesus came.\u00a0 In 2 Corinthians 5:17 Paul wrote&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!<\/span> <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In other words, the Church is a collection of God&#8217;s people who are a New Creation.\u00a0 We&#8217;re supposed to be different!\u00a0 As Pastor Jim&#8217;s Grandaddy said&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Make sure you stick out like a sore thumb!<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Jesus is the source of the Christian Church&#8217;s life AND Jesus is the Director of the Church&#8217;s continued activity and ministry in the World.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\">2: Jesus is the Firstborn from the Dead<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Verse 18 also brings the conversation back to the resurrection of Jesus&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the <span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\">firstborn from among the dead<\/span>, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.<\/span> <\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This Jesus isn&#8217;t just some religious leader who lived His life and then tragically died never to be heard from again.\u00a0 &#8220;On a hill Far Away&#8221; Jesus willingly gave His life for you and me; as Jesus atoned for our sins.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours<br \/>\nbut also for the sins of the whole world.<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">1 John 2:2<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Seaville-Outdoor-Chapel-Cross-_0906041024.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-4457 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Seaville-Outdoor-Chapel-Cross-_0906041024-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"Seaville Outdoor Chapel Cross _0906041024\" width=\"100\" height=\"140\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Seaville-Outdoor-Chapel-Cross-_0906041024-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Seaville-Outdoor-Chapel-Cross-_0906041024.jpg 326w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 100px) 100vw, 100px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">On the cross there was a Suction which took place reaching Back into the Garden of Eden and then reaching Forward until the end of human history:\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As Jesus hung on the cross suspended between Heaven and earth, <span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\">all of the sins from Adam until the last human being were drawn into His body<\/span>.\u00a0 And at the same moment God transferred the righteousness and holiness of Jesus throughout all time to those who would come to faith in Him.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<div class='tabs-left et_sliderfx_fade et_sliderauto_false et_sliderauto_speed_5000 et_slidertype_left_tabs clearfix'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='et_left_tabs_bg'><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<ul class='et-tabs-control'>\n\t\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tRomans 8\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\t1 Corinthians\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tEphesians\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tRomans 8:1\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\t1 Peter\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\t1 John\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tRomans 5\n\t\t<\/a><\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul> <!-- .et-tabs-control --> \n\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content'>\n\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-main-wrap'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-wrapper'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tFor those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.\u00a0 And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">-Rom 8:29-30\n\t\t<\/div><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tIt is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God \u2014 that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">-1 Cor 1:30-31\n\t\t<\/div><\/p>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tIn him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God&#8217;s grace\u00a0 that he lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">&#8211; Eph 1:7-8\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tTherefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,\u00a0 because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">-Rom 8:1-2\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tHe was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">-1 Peter 1:20\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tBut you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins. And in him is no sin. No one who lives in him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has either seen him or known him.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">-1 John 3:5-6\n\t\t<\/div>\n<p>\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tFor just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">&#8211; Rom 5:19\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div> <!-- .tabs-left -->\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\">3: Jesus is Supreme over EVERYTHING!!!<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: #00ff00;\"><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">IT&#8217;S ALL ABOUT JESUS&#8230;<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>In a nutshell (no reference to the joke that began this sermon&#8230;), that&#8217;s Paul&#8217;s message.\u00a0 Everything in this passage has been leading up to verse 18:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;<strong><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.<\/span><\/em><\/strong>&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0 NKJV<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The word &#8220;Preeminence&#8221; is better translated as &#8220;Supremacy.&#8221;\u00a0 Above All.\u00a0 Nothing else measures up.<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-warning'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><strong><span style=\"color: #003366; font-size: 14pt;\">Who does Jesus go to for advice???<\/span><\/strong><\/div><\/div>\n<p>Here&#8217;s how Eugene Peterson puts it in The Message (v 18-19):<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-shadow'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><strong><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">And when it comes to the church, he organizes and holds it together, like a head does a body.<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">He was supreme in the beginning and \u2014 leading the resurrection parade \u2014 he is supreme in the end. From beginning to end he&#8217;s there, towering far above everything, everyone.\u00a0 So spacious is he, so roomy, that everything of God finds its proper place in him without crowding.<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/div><\/div>\n<p>The supremacy of Jesus&#8217; deity makes equal with God the Father in every way.\u00a0 As we&#8217;ve seen:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: #00ff00;\"><strong><em><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Jesus is God with skin on.<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He is supreme in every way&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\t\t<div class='et-simple-slider et_sliderfx_fade et_sliderauto_false et_sliderauto_speed_7000 et_slidertype_simple'>\n\t\t\t<div class='et-simple-slides'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-wrapper'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Being Eternal<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Before Abraham was&#8230; He&#8217;s conquered our greatest enemy and He&#8217;s on the other side waiting for us.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charles_Spurgeon\" target=\"_blank\">Charles Haddon Spurgeon<\/a> beautifully articulated the reality of Jesus&#8217; supremacy when he wrote&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #003300;\">Look at Him!\u00a0 Can your imagination picture Him?\u00a0 Behold His transcendent glory!\u00a0 The majesty of kings is swallowed up; the pomp of empires dissolves like the white mist of the morning before the sun; the brightness of assembled armies is eclipsed.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003300;\">He in Himself is brighter than the sun, more terrible than armies with banners.\u00a0 See Him!\u00a0 See Him!
