NIV<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Parallel Journeys<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>We&#8217;re all\u00a0 probably familiar with the story of Moses and how God brought him in front of a burning bush and commanded him to go to Egypt and demand that Pharoah &#8220;Let my people go.&#8221;\u00a0 The image of Charlton Heston and &#8220;The Ten Commandments&#8221; movie is burned into our memories. But this story is not just a fictional story&#8230; it really happened.\u00a0 And, it&#8217;s in the Bible so that we can learn something from this history.\u00a0 There are many parallels between this journey of the Isrealites and our personal experience.<\/p>\n<p>Put yourself into the shoes (sandals?) of one of those Hebrews, exiled in Egypt&#8230; and you might see yourself&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\">1: Born into Slavery<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Just as in the movie &#8220;400 Years a Slave&#8221;&#8230; and just like real\u00a0 life in 19th century America- people were born into slavery.\u00a0 You had no choice; you were a slave by heredity.\u00a0 And there was nothing you could do about it.\u00a0 You couldn&#8217;t earn your way out or somehow buy your freedom back.\u00a0 You were somebody else&#8217;s property, tied to slavery.<\/p>\n<p>In the same way, all of us are slaves to sin.\u00a0 We constantly find ways to fall short of the life God is calling us to.\u00a0 We can&#8217;t escape our tenancy to look first to ourselves instead of looking for ways to &#8220;Love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, soul and strength.&#8221;\u00a0 We don&#8217;t naturally &#8220;love our neighbors as ourselves.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>We are &#8220;slaves&#8221; to sin.\u00a0 here&#8217;s how Jesus put it&#8230;.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Jesus replied, &#8220;I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.&#8221;<\/span> <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">John 8:34<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>And this is what Paul said&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">&#8220;There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands, <\/span><\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">no one who seeks God. <\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">All have turned away, they have together become worthless;<\/span><\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">there is no one who does good, not even one.&#8221;<\/span> <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Romans 3:10-12<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We can live life by attending church and trying to do a lot of good things, but that alone won&#8217;t free us from our separation from God.\u00a0 There&#8217;s nothing we can do on our own that will save us.<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-info'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blackaby.net\/expgod\/\" target=\"_blank\">Henry Blackaby<\/a><\/span>, author of the &#8220;Experiencing God&#8221; book and study series, gave the following advice:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;Don&#8217;t just do something&#8230; stand there&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;If you have trouble hearing God speak, you&#8217;re at trouble at the heart of your Christian experience.&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In other words, our relationship with God must come first.\u00a0 We can&#8217;t escape from the trap of sin until we have a relationship with Jesus Christ.<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n<p>All of us are trapped in slavery to sin,\u00a0 just as the Israelites were trapped by their own slavery to their Egyptian masters.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\">2: Set Free by God<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>But then Moses comes on the scene.\u00a0 He tells the slavemaster- Pharoah- to &#8220;Let my people go.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And in much the same way, Jesus enters our human life and sets us free from our slavery to sin&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith \u2014 and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God\u2014 not by works, so that no one can boast.<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Ephesians 2:8-9<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Grace is getting something we don&#8217;t deserve.\u00a0 The grace of Jesus becoming a human and dying on the cross for our sins is what saves us from our destiny of sin.\u00a0 We can&#8217;t earn that any more than the Hebrew slaves could earn their freedom by exceeding their quota of bricks.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In fact, the Hebrews were born into slavery.\u00a0 If that chain is to be broken, we need a new family identity.\u00a0 So God &#8220;adopts&#8221; us into His family.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s how Peter put it:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.<\/span> <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">1 Peter 2:9<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We are chosen in the same way that a child is chosen for adoption.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">For he chose us in him {<\/span><\/em><\/strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Christ<\/span><strong><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">} before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love\u00a0 he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will\u2014\u00a0 to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves.<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Ephesians 1:4-6<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\">3: Follow the Cloud<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Sunset-Cross_BeHappy-_400x300.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-8662\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Sunset-Cross_BeHappy-_400x300-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Sunset-Cross_BeHappy _400x300\" width=\"201\" height=\"151\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Sunset-Cross_BeHappy-_400x300-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Sunset-Cross_BeHappy-_400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 201px) 100vw, 201px\" \/><\/a>How does it get any better?\u00a0 The Israelites had seen God&#8217;s miracles.\u00a0 They knew the awesome power of God first hand!\u00a0 And us?\u00a0 We have the Bible, the Holy Spirit; we have the opportunity to come to church every Sunday and to be surrounded by the support of friends and family, of music and inspiration.\u00a0 But what happens when we walk out of the sanctuary door?<\/p>\n<p>When the Israelites &#8220;walked out of the door&#8221; (slavery in Egypt), they started to whine; <em><span style=\"color: #333399;\">no meat- only this boring manna, we&#8217;re going to die in the desert, why oh why oh why?\u00a0 It would have been better if we stayed in Egypt and died as a slave instead of dying in this desert<\/span><\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0 Really?!?<\/p>\n<p>They followed the Crowd, even when the Cloud of God&#8217;s power and presence was right before them.<\/p>\n<p>And what about us?\u00a0 Are we &#8220;ok&#8221; with sin?\u00a0 do we gossip?\u00a0 Do we speak up for God when we&#8217;re chatting with co-workers?\u00a0 Does our faith stay in church or do we live it out?<\/p>\n<p>We are trained to run a race:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. <\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.<\/span> <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Hebrews 12:1-3<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re called to go out into the world, and in our faith to be defended by the Holy Spirit:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.\u00a0 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place,\u00a0 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. <\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.\u00a0 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.<\/span> <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Ephesians 6:13-17<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Our willpower can&#8217;t prevent us from denying God.<\/p>\n<p>How do we follow the Cloud?\u00a0 How do we resist the Crowd?\u00a0 We can&#8217;t resist by forcing ourselves to do good things.\u00a0 We can&#8217;t earn our salvation.\u00a0 We need to walk\u00a0 forward in faith, knowing Jesus and knowing that He has already taken care of our sin.<\/p>\n<p>We &#8220;Do&#8221; good works because we&#8217;re in love with God and we want to please Him.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Do&#8221; is a result of knowing what God &#8220;Did&#8221; for us.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">\u00a0Quiz Time!<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #000080;\">As you reflect on what you&#8217;ve just heard\/read, give this quiz a try.\u00a0 If you don&#8217;t understand an answer (or if you disagree with the &#8220;correct&#8221;
