You&#8217;re only a boy, and he&#8217;s been a man of war since his youth.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>34 But David persisted. &#8220;I have been taking care of my father&#8217;s sheep and goats,&#8221; he said. &#8220;When a lion or a bear comes to steal a lamb from the flock, I go after it with a club and rescue the lamb from its mouth. If the animal turns on me, I catch it by the jaw and club it to death. I have done this to both lions and bears, and I&#8217;ll do it to this pagan Philistine, too, for he has defied the armies of the living God!<\/p>\n<p>37 The Lord who rescued me from the claws of the lion and the bear will rescue me from this Philistine!&#8221; Saul finally consented. &#8220;All right, go ahead,&#8221; he said. &#8220;And may the Lord be with you!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>38 Then Saul gave David his own armor\u2014a bronze helmet and a coat of mail.\n39 David put it on, strapped the sword over it, and took a step or two to see what it was like, for he had never worn such things before. &#8220;I can&#8217;t go in these,&#8221; he protested to Saul. &#8220;I&#8217;m not used to them.&#8221; So David took them off again.<\/p>\n<p>40 He picked up five smooth stones from a stream and put them into his shepherd&#8217;s bag. Then, armed only with his shepherd&#8217;s staff and sling, he started across the valley to fight the Philistine.\n41 Goliath walked out toward David with his shield bearer ahead of him,\n42 sneering in contempt at this ruddy-faced boy.\n43 &#8220;Am I a dog,&#8221; he roared at David, &#8220;that you come at me with a stick?&#8221; And he cursed David by the names of his gods.\n44 &#8220;Come over here, and I&#8217;ll give your flesh to the birds and wild animals!&#8221; Goliath yelled.\n45 David replied to the Philistine, &#8220;You come to me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of Heaven&#8217;s Armies\u2014the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.\n46 Today the Lord will conquer you, and I will kill you and cut off your head. And then I will give the dead bodies of your men to the birds and wild animals, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel!\n47 And everyone assembled here will know that the Lord rescues his people, but not with sword and spear. This is the Lord&#8217;s battle, and he will give you to us!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>48 As Goliath moved closer to attack, David quickly ran out to meet him.\n49 Reaching into his shepherd&#8217;s bag and taking out a stone, he hurled it with his sling and hit the Philistine in the forehead. The stone sank in, and Goliath stumbled and fell face down on the ground.\n50 So David triumphed over the Philistine with only a sling and a stone, for he had no sword.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Stones<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The stones that David took from the brook have several lesson for us&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Five Stones<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Galilee-Stones-_48-6_400x570.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-8554 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Galilee-Stones-_48-6_400x570-210x300.jpg\" alt=\"Galilee Stones _48-6_400x570\" width=\"179\" height=\"256\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Galilee-Stones-_48-6_400x570-210x300.jpg 210w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Galilee-Stones-_48-6_400x570.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 179px) 100vw, 179px\" \/><\/a>Why did David grab five stones?\u00a0 Was this a lack of faith somehow; with God on your side, wouldn&#8217;t one stone be enough?<\/p>\n<p>Goliath had 4 brothers, and tradition suggests that David slew them as well, but that&#8217;s speculation at best.\u00a0 Personally, I think he chose five stones in case one didn&#8217;t work, he might make use of another.<\/p>\n<p>While David certainly exercised his faith in God and was trusting God&#8217;s provision, yet he still did all that he could be be as humanly prepared as possible.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #003300;\">We need to Respond to life; not React.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<div class='tabs-left et_sliderfx_fade et_sliderauto_false et_sliderauto_speed_5000 et_slidertype_left_tabs clearfix'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='et_left_tabs_bg'><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<ul class='et-tabs-control'>\n\t\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tCOUNT\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tPREPARE\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tPLANS\n\t\t<\/a><\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul> <!-- .et-tabs-control --> \n\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content'>\n\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-main-wrap'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-wrapper'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tLuke 14:25-34 25<\/p>\n<p>A large crowd was following Jesus. He turned around and said to them,\u00a0 &#8220;If you want to be my disciple, you must hate everyone else by comparison\u2014your father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters\u2014yes, even your own life. Otherwise, you cannot be my disciple.\u00a0 And if you do not carry your own cross and follow me, you cannot be my disciple.<\/p>\n<p>28 &#8220;But don&#8217;t begin until you count the cost. For who would begin construction of a building without first calculating the cost to see if there is enough money to finish it?\u00a0 Otherwise, you might complete only the foundation before running out of money, and then everyone would laugh at you.\u00a0 They would say, &#8216;There&#8217;s the person who started that building and couldn&#8217;t afford to finish it!&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>31 &#8220;Or what king would go to war against another king without first sitting down with his counselors to discuss whether his army of 10,000 could defeat the 20,000 soldiers marching against him?\u00a0 And if he can&#8217;t, he will send a delegation to discuss terms of peace while the enemy is still far away.\u00a0 So you cannot become my disciple without giving up everything you own.<\/p>\n<p>34 &#8220;Salt is good for seasoning. But if it loses its flavor, how do you make it salty again?\n\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tProverbs 24:27<\/p>\n<p>Do your planning and prepare your fields before building your house.\n\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tProverbs 20:18<\/p>\n<p>Plans succeed through good counsel; don&#8217;t go to war without wise advice.\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div> <!-- .tabs-left -->\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Five SMOOTH Stones<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Not only did David grab five stones, the stones he grabbed were selected for the job. These Stones had been prepared; on one level by nature, but certainly on another level by God for this specific purpose.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Luke 21:15<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0For I {<em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Jesus<\/span><\/em>} will give you the right words and such wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to reply or refute you!<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><span style=\"color: #003300;\">Why Smooth?<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/DavidGoliath-Stones-close-_Steve.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-8537\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/DavidGoliath-Stones-close-_Steve-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"DavidGoliath-Stones-close _Steve\" width=\"162\" height=\"122\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/DavidGoliath-Stones-close-_Steve-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/DavidGoliath-Stones-close-_Steve.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 162px) 100vw, 162px\" \/><\/a>If these stones were not smooth, they could not have been easily picked from the bad for quick use.<\/li>\n<li>Smooth stones would go most freely out of the sling.\u00a0 And so they would go with more force and certainty, directly to the mark which he aimed at.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Notice how God works even in the smallest detail.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><span style=\"color: #003300;\">Why Clean?<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The brook had purified them.\u00a0 We can make the analogy to spiritual sanctification.\u00a0 God can&#8217;t use us unless we&#8217;re &#8220;clean&#8221;:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Psalm 139:23-24<\/span><br \/>\n<strong><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.\u00a0 Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life.<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>And on a more practical level, clean stones will not get stuck in the sling.\u00a0 They won&#8217;t be hindered in flight by dirt and debris.\u00a0 Otherwise the stones might have been slowed down in flight and caused to fall short of their target.<\/p>\n<p>To become a giant slayer, we must be smooth, spotless, and whole.\u00a0 We must come to the battle with Christ, not with our own man-made &#8220;armor.&#8221; We have to have the courage to put that &#8220;armor&#8221; away and to trust in God only.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #800000;\">The Shepherd&#8217;s Bag<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>God provides for all of our daily needs.\u00a0 A stone in &#8220;God&#8217;s Pouch&#8221; becomes something supernatural.\u00a0 Notice that it says that David put the stones in THE shepherd&#8217;s bag, not in HIS shepherd&#8217;s bag.<\/p>\n<p>A shepherd&#8217;s bag carried provisions while keeping the sheep in the open country.\u00a0 It appears that this refers to the kind of small beg that shepherds would carry with them generally made of dried skin.\u00a0 When he leaves home to go and tend the sheep, the shepherd will put into it some bread, cheese, dried fruit, and maybe some olives or figs to meet his needs for the day.<\/p>\n<p>It was into this bag that David placed the five smooth stones when he went to battle with the giant.\u00a0 The bag carried the things he would need for his &#8220;battle.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But&#8230; the Good Shepherd also carries our daily needs and provision for this life AND for the life to come.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Psalm 46:1-2<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble.\u00a0 So we will not fear when earthquakes come and the mountains crumble into the sea.<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Years after this battle (and after many other battles), David would write these words&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Psalm 62:7-8<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\"> My victory and honor come from God alone. He is my refuge, a rock where no enemy can reach me. O my people, trust in him at all times. Pour out your heart to him, for God is our refuge.<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It wasn&#8217;t only this battle with Goliath.\u00a0 Throughout his life, David&#8217;s faith was tested but it remained strong.\u00a0 He continued to trust the Lord whenever difficulties came&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Psalm 9:9<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><em>The Lord is a shelter for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble.<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But so many times, we don&#8217;t depend on God&#8217;s promises.\u00a0 Instead, we &#8220;hedge our bets.&#8221;\u00a0 We have our own ideas of what we should do, and then we ask God to bless them after we do what we think we should do!\u00a0 Instead, we need to turn to God and understand His will BEFORE we act on our own.\u00a0 God chooses the stone HE wants us to use.\u00a0 God gives us the victory.<\/p>\n<p>What do we put in our &#8220;bag&#8221;?\u00a0 How can we know what &#8220;stone&#8221; we will need to take out our Goliath?\u00a0 We need to respond to the battles, but we must do so relying on the Good Shepherd (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=john+10&amp;version=TLB\" target=\"_blank\">John 10<\/a>) and His provision.<\/p>\n<p>Notice that there is no reference that David looked into the bag.\u00a0 He was running with his focus on Goliath and his trust in God&#8230; not in his ability to select the right stone.\u00a0 He trusted that God would place in his hand the things he needed at the very moment he needed it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Conclusion<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>David&#8217;s faith in God caused him to look at the giant from a different perspectibe.\u00a0 Goliath was mearly a mortal man defying an all powerful God.\u00a0 David looked at the battle from God&#8217;s point of view.<\/p>\n<p>If we look at our &#8220;giant problems&#8221; and imposible\u00a0 situations from God&#8217;s perspective, we realize that God will fight for us and with us.
