Let your ears be attentive\u00a0\u00a0to the voice of my supplications!<\/li>\n<li>If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities, \u00a0Lord, who could stand?<\/li>\n<li>But there is forgiveness with you,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0so that you may be revered.<\/li>\n<li>I wait for the Lord, my soul waits,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0and in his word I hope;<\/li>\n<li>My soul waits for the Lord, more than those who watch for the morning,\u00a0 more than those who watch for the morning. O Israel, hope in the Lord!\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0For with the Lord there is steadfast love, and with him is great power to redeem.<\/li>\n<li>It is he who will redeem Israel\u00a0from all its iniquities.\u00a0<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">On the Road Again&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>How do you keep occupied when you\u2019re in the car driving on a long trip (vacation)?\u00a0 You\u2019re anxious to get to where you\u2019re going, even as you\u2019re anxious about the other drivers who are cutting you off <a href=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Family-Vacation.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-8300\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Family-Vacation-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Family Vacation\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Family-Vacation-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Family-Vacation.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>on the highway.\u00a0 You and your kids are bored.\u00a0 So you play music on the CD player.\u00a0 Or maybe you count license plates (picture Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel traveling on the New Jersey Turnpike).\u00a0 Or maybe you even get the family to sing some songs.\u00a0 Remember those long bus trips in school where you might have been subjected to 100 bottles of bear on the wall\u2026<\/p>\n<p>But you get the point- music helps us through life\u2019s journeys.<\/p>\n<p>In ancient Israel, they had many festivals which were held in Jerusalem.\u00a0 People would come from all over and travel \u201cup\u201d to Jerusalem.\u00a0 They always said \u201cup\u201d to Jerusalem.\u00a0 Even if you were headed south from Galilee, you\u2019d say we\u2019re going Up to Jerusalem.\u00a0 Jerusalem is on a geographical high point.\u00a0 It\u2019s also where the Temple is, so it\u2019s a Spiritual Highpoint.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Songs of Ascents<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The book of Psalms records some of the songs that the people would sing as they traveled \u201cup\u201d to Jerusalem.\u00a0 The 15 psalms beginning with Psalm 120 and continuing through Psalm 134 are identified as \u201csongs of ascents.\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Jordan-Valley-nr-Masada-_56-26.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-4091\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Jordan-Valley-nr-Masada-_56-26-300x206.jpg\" alt=\"Jordan Valley nr Masada _56-26\" width=\"290\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Jordan-Valley-nr-Masada-_56-26-300x206.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Jordan-Valley-nr-Masada-_56-26.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 290px) 100vw, 290px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>According to one commentary, there\u2019s is a pattern in the way these 15 songs are arranged.\u00a0 You can look at them as being arranged in a series of five groups of three songs.\u00a0 Different commentaries might find other arrangements, but this does give us some insight.<\/p>\n<p>The first song in each group speaks of desperation.\u00a0 Things are going bad and we know that we need God, and we totally depend on Him.<\/p>\n<p>The second song in each group talks about God\u2019s power, love, and righteousness.\u00a0 We worship Him and know that He will help us.\u00a0 Psalm 130 is one of these second songs.\u00a0 Verse 5 says \u201c<strong><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">I wait for the Lord and in His word I hope.<\/span><\/em><\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The third song in each group celebrates the security we have with Him.\u00a0 Because of His protection, and because of the loving trusting relationship we have with God, we can step out and serve Him.<\/p>\n<p>So as the Israelites traveled to the Temple and festivals in Jerusalem, it\u2019s fair to say that they were singing songs that expressed their Desperation for God, their Dependence on God\u2019s Power, and their Hope in God\u2019s Security.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Anticipation<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The people were traveling a long distance headed for these festivals.\u00a0 And as they traveled they must have been anticipating a time of celebration and worship.\u00a0 Just as we might look forward to planting our feet in the sand on a beach, they were looking forward to a time of celebrating God in the Temple.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re on a trip too. We\u2019re going somewhere; there\u2019s a purpose to our travels.<\/p>\n<p>Paul talked about a prize at the end of life\u2019s journey.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<div class='et-simple-slider et_sliderfx_fade et_sliderauto_false et_sliderauto_speed_5000 et_slidertype_simple'>\n\t\t\t<div class='et-simple-slides'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-wrapper'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tPhilippians 3:14&#8230; <span style=\"color: #000000;\">I press on toward the goal to win the <span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\">prize<\/span> for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t1 Cor 9:24&#8230; \u00a0 \u201c<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Run in such a way as to get the <span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\">prize.<\/span><\/span>\u201d<\/p>\n\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tIn Ephesians 3: 19\u2026 Paul prays that we might be \u201c<span style=\"color: #000000;\">filled to the measure of all the fullness of God<\/span>\u201d\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div> <!-- .et-simple-slider -->\n\t\t\n<p>We\u2019re on a journey with a purpose.\u00a0 We want the prize. We want to filled with Christ.\u00a0 One way to do this is to encourage eachother with songs reminding us of our need for Christ, of His power, and of the security He offers.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201d<strong><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Speak to one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs.\u00a0 <\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.<\/span><\/em><\/strong>\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 (Ephesians 5:19-20)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>What songs should we be singing as we travel this road?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">1: Songs of Desperation<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The first Psalm in each group of Psalms of ascents speaks of our desperate situations, and reminds us that God is the answer.\u00a0 Flip back to Psalm 120, which is the first Psalm in the first group:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-container et_sliderfx_fade et_sliderauto_false et_sliderauto_speed_5000 et_slidertype_top_tabs'>\n\t\t\t\t<ul class='et-tabs-control'>\n\t\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tGroup 1\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tGroup 2\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tGroup 3\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tGroup 4\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tGroup 5\n\t\t<\/a><\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul> <!-- .et-tabs-control --> \n\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content'>\n\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-main-wrap'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-wrapper'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<span style=\"color: #00ff00;\">Psalm 120:1&#8230;<\/span>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u201cIn my distress I cry to the Lord\u201d\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<span style=\"color: #00ff00;\">Psalm 123:1-2&#8230;<\/span> \u00a0\u00a0 \u201cTo You I lift up my eyes\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cAs the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master\u2026 so our eyes look to the Lord our God until He has mercy upon us.\u201d\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<span style=\"color: #00ff00;\">Psalm 126:4&#8230;\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0 \u201cRestore our fortunes O Lord.\u201d\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<span style=\"color: #00ff00;\">Psalm 129:1&#8230;<\/span>\u00a0 \u201cOften they have attacked me.\u201d\n\t\t<\/div>\n<p>\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<span style=\"color: #00ff00;\">Psalm 132:1&#8230;<\/span>\u00a0 \u201cO Lord, remember in David\u2019s favor all the hardships he endured.\u201d\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div> <!-- .et-tabs-container -->\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And so, we too have songs that sing of our desperate need for God.\u00a0 Here are some lyrics that should sound familiar:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<div class='tabs-left et_sliderfx_fade et_sliderauto_false et_sliderauto_speed_5000 et_slidertype_left_tabs clearfix'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='et_left_tabs_bg'><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<ul class='et-tabs-control'>\n\t\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tAs the Deer\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tDraw Me Close\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tI Need Thee Every Hour\n\t\t<\/a><\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul> <!-- .et-tabs-control --> \n\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content'>\n\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-main-wrap'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-wrapper'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t\u201dAs the deer panteth for the water, so my soul longeth after Thee.<\/p>\n<p>You alone are my heart\u2019s desire, and I long to worship Thee\u201d\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t\u201dDraw me close to you- never let me go.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d lay it all down again, to hear you say that I\u2019m your friend.<\/p>\n<p>You are my desire- no one else will do.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019re all I want, Jesus.\u00a0\u00a0 You\u2019re all I\u2019ve ever needed.\u201d\n\t\t<\/div>\n<p>\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t\u201dI need Thee every hour, most Holy One.<\/p>\n<p>O make me thine indeed, thou blessed Son.<\/p>\n<p>I need thee, O I need thee. Every hour I need Thee.\u201d\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div> <!-- .tabs-left -->\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Our passage for this morning opens with the line: \u201cOut of the depths I cry to you O Lord.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pain and physical loss draw us towards God.\u00a0 It\u2019s easy to cry out to God and to be desperate for Him when we\u2019re going through rough times.<\/p>\n<p>But shouldn\u2019t we also sense our desperation for God even when things seem to be going well?<\/p>\n<p>In Philippians (4:12), Paul wrote that he had learned live in both plenty and in want.\u00a0 We focus on the &#8220;in want&#8221; part, but it&#8217;s also important to learn how to live &#8220;in plenty.&#8221;\u00a0 Charles Spurgeon, in his Morning and Evening devotional (Feb. 10) commented on this verse:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #003300;\">\u201cWhen we have much of God\u2019s providential mercies, it often happens that we have but little of God\u2019s grace\u2026 we are full and we forget God:\u00a0 <\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #003300;\">Satisfied with earth, we are content to do without heaven.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>We should always be reminding ourselves and each other of our desperation for God.\u00a0 Last week Pastor Jim reminded us that Jesus told us (in Matthew 7:7) to:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\n<li>\u201cKeep seeking,\u201d<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Keep knocking\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cKeep asking\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We should never just become comfortable with the gifts; we need to know the Giver.<\/p>\n<p>James 1:17 reminds us that \u201c<strong><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights<\/span><\/em><\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Charles Spurgeon, (in his February 6 devotional, commenting on Ephesians 6:18) put it this way:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #003300;\">\u201cAll the bread your soul has eaten has come down from heaven, and all the water of which it has drank has flowed from the living rock- Christ Jesus the Lord.\u00a0\u00a0 Your soul has never grown rich in itself; it has always been a pensioner upon the daily bounty of God.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In our prayers, in our personal thoughts, in our conversations with family and friends- both within and outside of the church- and even in our facebook posts- Do we admit, and even celebrate, that we\u2019re a \u201c<strong>pensioner upon the daily bounty of God<\/strong>\u201d?\u00a0 Because when we come to grasp with the fact that we totally depend on God, we\u2019ll want to know Him more.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">2: Songs Praising God\u2019s Power<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The second Psalm in each group sings of God\u2019s power.\u00a0 If we\u2019re desperate for God, our faith is well placed.\u00a0 God loves us enough and has the power to understand our needs and to answer our prayers.<\/p>\n<p>Take a look at the second Psalm from each group&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-container et_sliderfx_fade et_sliderauto_false et_sliderauto_speed_5000 et_slidertype_top_tabs'>\n\t\t\t\t<ul class='et-tabs-control'>\n\t\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tGroup 1\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tGroup 2\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tGroup 3\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tGroup 4\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tGroup 5\n\t\t<\/a><\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul> <!-- .et-tabs-control --> \n\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content'>\n\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-main-wrap'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-wrapper'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<span style=\"color: #00ff00;\">Psalm 121:1&#8230;<\/span> \u201cI lift my eyes up to the hills, where does my help come from?<\/p>\n<p>My help comes from the Lord, who made the heaven and earth\u2026\u201d\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<span style=\"color: #00ff00;\">Psalm 124:1&#8230;<\/span> \u201cIf it had not been for the Lord who was on our side\u2026\u201d\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<span style=\"color: #00ff00;\">Psalm 127:1&#8230;<\/span> \u201cUnless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain\u2026\u201d\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<span style=\"color: #00ff00;\">Psalm 130:7&#8230;<\/span> \u201cfor with the Lord there is steadfast love, and with him is great power to redeem.\u201d\n\t\t<\/div>\n<p>\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<span style=\"color: #00ff00;\">Psalm 133:3&#8230;<\/span> \u201cfor there the Lord ordained His blessing, life evermore\u201d\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div> <!-- .et-tabs-container -->\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 2:9\u2026<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">\u201cNo eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When we try to wrap our minds around the things that \u201cGod has prepared for those who love Him,\u201d here are some of the songs that we sing \u2026<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<div class='tabs-left et_sliderfx_fade et_sliderauto_false et_sliderauto_speed_5000 et_slidertype_left_tabs clearfix'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='et_left_tabs_bg'><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<ul class='et-tabs-control'>\n\t\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tThe Solid Rock\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tShout to the Lord\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tAwesome God\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tA Mighy Fortress is Our God\n\t\t<\/a><\/li>\n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tAmazing Grace\n\t\t<\/a><\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul> <!-- .et-tabs-control --> \n\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content'>\n\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-main-wrap'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-wrapper'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t\u201dOn Christ the solid rock I stand.<\/p>\n<p>All other ground is sinking sand.\u201d\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t\u201dShout to the Lord, all the earth let us sing.<\/p>\n<p>Power and majesty, praise to His name.\u201d\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t\u201dOur God is an awesome God.<\/p>\n<p>He reigns from heaven above, with wisdom, power and love.<\/p>\n<p>Our God is an awesome God!\u201d\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t\u201dA mighty fortress is our God.\u00a0 A bulwark never failing.<\/p>\n<p>Our helper, He, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing.\u201d\n\t\t<\/div>\n<p>\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t\u201dAmazing grace, how sweet the sound-<\/p>\n<p>that saved a wretch like me!<\/p>\n<p>I once was lost, but now am found.<\/p>\n<p>Was blind, but now I see.\u201d\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div> <!-- .tabs-left -->\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>At the end of chapter 1 of Paul\u2019s letter to the Colossians (Colossians 1:28-29) he writes:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">We proclaim him (Jesus), admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ.<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Then he adds this\u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">To this end I labor, struggling with all <span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\">His<\/span> energy, which so powerfully works in me.<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We can\u2019t do anything without the power, love, and forgiveness that God gives us\u00a0 But sometimes we\u2019re tempted to sing other songs that that ignore God and instead place our hope in our own abilities.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone remember this one?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201dO Lord, it\u2019s hard to be humble, when you\u2019re perfect in every way.\u00a0 I can\u2019t wait to look in the mirror; I get better looking each day.\u00a0 To know me is to love me\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Popular culture says \u201c<strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Suck it up!<\/span><\/strong>\u201d\u00a0 \u201c<strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Be a man!<\/span><\/strong>\u201d \u201c<strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Earn your way!<\/span><\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Jesus reminds us that He is the only true power in our lives:<br \/>\n<strong><em>The house of our life will collapse if we build it on the sands of our own abilities.<\/em> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>God wants us to live songs that glorify Him as our only provider.\u00a0 He wants us to show others that He is worthy to be trusted.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">3: Songs of Security<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>And third, God gives us songs of security.\u00a0 The third psalm in each group sings of the peace and comfort that comes when we rest in God\u2019s security\u2026<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-container et_sliderfx_fade et_sliderauto_false et_sliderauto_speed_5000 et_slidertype_top_tabs'>\n\t\t\t\t<ul class='et-tabs-control'>\n\t\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tGroup 1\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tGroup 2\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tGroup 3\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tGroup 4\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tGroup 5\n\t\t<\/a><\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul> <!-- .et-tabs-control --> \n\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content'>\n\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-main-wrap'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-wrapper'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<span style=\"color: #00ff00;\">Psalm 122:1&#8230;<\/span>\u00a0 \u201cI was glad when they said to me, \u2018Let us go to the House of the Lord!\u2019\u201d\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<span style=\"color: #00ff00;\">Psalm 125:1&#8230;<\/span> \u00a0 \u201cThose who trust in the Lord are like Mt. Zion,<\/p>\n<p>which cannot be moved but abides forever.\u201d\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<span style=\"color: #00ff00;\">Psalm 128:1&#8230;<\/span>\u00a0 \u201cHappy is everyone who fears the Lord, who walks in His ways.<\/p>\n<p>You shall eat the fruit of the labor of you hands.\u201d\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<span style=\"color: #00ff00;\">Psalm 131:2&#8230;<\/span>\u00a0 \u201clike a weaned child with its mother;<\/p>\n<p>my soul is like the weaned child that is with me.\u201d\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<span style=\"color: #00ff00;\">Psalm 134:1&#8230;\u00a0<\/span> \u201cCome, bless the Lord, all you servants of the Lord<\/p>\n<p>who stand by night in the house of the Lord!\u201d\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div> <!-- .et-tabs-container -->\n<p>Our \u201cChurch Lingo\u201d speaks of \u201c<strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Walking with God.<\/span><\/strong>\u201d\u00a0 What\u2019s that mean?\u00a0 When we have an attitude of dependence on God and an attitude of worship, He leads us into a state of mind where we\u2019re at peace.\u00a0 We want to \u201c<strong>stand by night in the house of the Lord<\/strong>.\u201d And so we use Prayer, Bible reading, and music to savor our relationship with our Creator.\u00a0 Our thoughts, words, and deeds pull us deeper into that relationship.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #ff0000;\">\u00a0But&#8230;<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But another part of Walking with God is that we use the security He gives us to share with others.\u00a0 Paul talks about this in Philippians chapter 2\u2026<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201c<strong><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">IF\u00a0 you have any encouragement from being united with Christ; if any comfort from His love, if any fellowship with the spirit<\/span><\/em><\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>In other words, IF you are secure because of your relationship with Christ,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">THEN \u201cEach of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Paul tells the Colossians (Colossians 1:4-5) \u00a0that he has heard of their faith in the Lord Jesus and of their love for all the saints, and he goes on to say:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u201c<strong><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">the faith and love that <span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\">spring from the hope<\/span> that is stored up for you in heaven<\/span><\/em><\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nehemiah 8:10 says the same thing&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u201c<strong><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Do not grieve, for the Joy of the Lord is your strength.<\/span><\/em><\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hope&#8221; isn&#8217;t just some kind of cross your fingers and take your chances that it turns out the way you want.\u00a0 Christian Hope is based on a guaranteed promise from God.\u00a0 Strength comes from this well-placed hope and from the joy in the Lord.<a href=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/LaPalmilla15-07-18-trench-_Jen-_IMG_0179.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-8025 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/LaPalmilla15-07-18-trench-_Jen-_IMG_0179-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Trench Done!\" width=\"127\" height=\"95\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/LaPalmilla15-07-18-trench-_Jen-_IMG_0179-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/LaPalmilla15-07-18-trench-_Jen-_IMG_0179.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 127px) 100vw, 127px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you think about it, why is it that we can put part of our income into the offering plate- even if things are tight at the end of the month?\u00a0 Or why can some of us travel to Mexico to dig a trench in the hot sun and help build a church sanctuary?\u00a0 Isn\u2019t it because we know our security lies in our relationship with Christ?<\/p>\n<p>In our actions, and in our music, we sing songs about this security:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<div class='tabs-left et_sliderfx_fade et_sliderauto_false et_sliderauto_speed_5000 et_slidertype_left_tabs clearfix'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='et_left_tabs_bg'><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<ul class='et-tabs-control'>\n\t\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tIn the Garden\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tTrust and Obey\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tAway in the Manger\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tNear the Cross\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tRock of Ages\n\t\t<\/a><\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul> <!-- .et-tabs-control --> \n\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content'>\n\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-main-wrap'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-wrapper'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t\u201dAnd He walks with me and He talks with me, and He tells me I am His own.<\/p>\n<p>And the joy we share as we tarry there, none other has ever known.\u201d\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t\u201dWhen we walk with the Lord, in the light of his word, what a glory he sheds on our way!<\/p>\n<p>While we do his good will, he abides with us still, and with all who will trust and obey.\u201d\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t\u201cBe near me, Lord Jesus I ask thee to stay close by me forever,<\/p>\n<p>and love me I pray. (v3)\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t\u201dNear the cross I\u2019ll watch and wait, hoping trusting ever&#8221;\n\t\t<\/div>\n<p>\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t\u201cRock of ages, cleft for me. Let me hide myself in thee.\u201d\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div> <!-- .tabs-left -->\n<p>The list could go on and on.\u00a0 But these songs are there for a reason.\u00a0 People of God have been motivated to write these songs because they felt closeness with God; they knew His protection and security in a personal way.\u00a0 They trusted and stepped out in love and service.\u00a0\u00a0 And they felt that they just had to sing about this peace and security that God gave them.<\/p>\n<p>Over and over, Jesus promises His security and protection for us\u2026.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-container et_sliderfx_fade et_sliderauto_false et_sliderauto_speed_5000 et_slidertype_top_tabs'>\n\t\t\t\t<ul class='et-tabs-control'>\n\t\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tJohn 10\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tMatthew 28\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tMatthew 23\n\t\t<\/a><\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul> <!-- .et-tabs-control --> \n\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content'>\n\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-main-wrap'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-wrapper'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<span style=\"color: #00ff00;\">John 10:14-15\u2026<\/span>\u00a0 &#8220;I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me\u2014 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father \u2014 and I lay down my life for the sheep.\u201d\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<span style=\"color: #00ff00;\">Matthew 28:20\u2026<\/span> \u201dAnd surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.&#8221;\n\t\t<\/div>\n<p>\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<span style=\"color: #00ff00;\">Matthew 23:37-38\u2026<\/span> &#8220;O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing.&#8221;\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div> <!-- .et-tabs-container -->\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Are we willing to become like little chicks and to allow Jesus to gather us under His wings?\u00a0 More than that, are we craving, thirsting to have that protection?\u00a0 And do we sing life songs that show that we trust this security enough to sacrifice ourselves in works of love?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Looking to Jesus&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<div class='et-box et-bio'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When someone we love passes away, we immediately feel an intense need to be reunited.\u00a0\u00a0 Even if we could just have 5 more minutes with them!\u00a0 We\u2019re bombarded with the things that they did for us, and it\u2019s a real <a href=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/sunflower-402249__180.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-6634\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/sunflower-402249__180.jpg\" alt=\"sunflower-402249__180\" width=\"270\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/sunflower-402249__180.jpg 270w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/sunflower-402249__180-140x94.jpg 140w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 270px) 100vw, 270px\" \/><\/a>struggle to figure out how to do these things ourselves.\u00a0 We\u2019re constantly reminded how much we need that person, and we don\u2019t hold back when it comes to telling others about it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Secondly, as we move on, we become more and more aware of all of the good things that this person brought to our lives.\u00a0 We may even feel guilty that we didn\u2019t appreciate that person enough, but we realize that God brought this relationship into our lives to empower us to serve Him and to love Him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And thirdly, there\u2019s a sense of security knowing that God loved us enough to give us this relationship.\u00a0 He used it to build us up in the faith and to help us grow.\u00a0 We learned things from this relationship, and we want to give back and put what we\u2019ve gained into action.\u00a0 Even from opposite sides of eternity, there\u2019s a sense of peace knowing that someone close to us, is with our Creator.\u00a0<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #003300;\">But shouldn\u2019t we feel the same way about Jesus?\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Shouldn\u2019t we constantly feel our intense and desperate need of his love, grace, and forgiveness?<\/p>\n<p>Shouldn\u2019t we be in constant prayer and thanksgiving, always making connection with the things God does in our lives?<\/p>\n<p>And shouldn\u2019t we tell others about this great relationship we have with our creator?<\/p>\n<p>We need to sing about Jesus- not only in our words, but also in our attitudes and actions towards others.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As we travel on this road of growing closer to God and becoming like Him, acting in trust and obedience, and learning to love Him more and more\u2026<\/p>\n<p>What songs are we listening to?\u00a0 What songs do our lives sing?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">\u00a0Quiz Time!<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #000080;\">As you reflect on what you&#8217;ve just heard\/read, give this quiz a try.\u00a0 If you don&#8217;t understand an answer (or if you disagree with the &#8220;correct&#8221;
