Burnt offering and sin offering You did not require.<\/p>\n<p>7 Then I said, &#8220;Behold, I come; In the scroll of the book it is written of me.<\/p>\n<p>8 I delight to do Your will, O my God, And Your law is within my heart.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>9 I have proclaimed the good news of righteousness In the great assembly; Indeed, I do not restrain my lips, O Lord, You Yourself know.<\/p>\n<p>10 I have not hidden Your righteousness within my heart; I have declared Your faithfulness and Your salvation; I have not concealed Your loving kindness and Your truth From the great assembly.<\/p>\n<p>11 Do not withhold Your tender mercies from me, O Lord; Let Your lovingkindness and Your truth continually preserve me.<\/p>\n<p>12 For innumerable evils have surrounded me; My iniquities have overtaken me, so that I am not able to look up; They are more than the hairs of my head; Therefore my heart fails me.<\/p>\n<p>13 Be pleased, O Lord, to deliver me; O Lord, make haste to help me!<\/p>\n<p>14 Let them be ashamed and brought to mutual confusion Who seek to destroy my life; Let them be driven backward and brought to dishonor Who wish me evil.<\/p>\n<p>15 Let them be confounded because of their shame, Who say to me, &#8220;Aha, aha!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>16 Let all those who seek You rejoice and be glad in You; Let such as love Your salvation say continually,&#8221; The Lord be magnified!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>17 But I am poor and needy; Yet the Lord thinks upon me. You are my help and my deliverer; Do not delay, O my God.<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Forty&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<div class='et-box et-shadow'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In late 1983, the Irish rock band U2 were in the Windmill Lane Studios in Dublin putting the finishing touches on their third album,\u00a0 &#8220;War.&#8221;\u00a0 It was an album filled with the outrage, heartache, and lament over the violence then tearing apart Northern Ireland.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It had been a rough session.\u00a0 Their producer had pushed the young band to the limit, forcing the lead singer, Bono, to sing until his throat bled.\u00a0 They had nine tracks recorded.\u00a0 Then needed one more for an album.\u00a0 At 6:00 in the morning, they only had one hour left in the session.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The band members began to improvise around some favorite chords and a melody took shape.\u00a0 For lyrics, Bono turned to a familiar source of inspiration&#8230; He opened up his Bible to the Psalms.\u00a0 His eyes fell on Psalm 40.\u00a0 With the words of the psalmist in his head, that last track,\u00a0 known as &#8220;40&#8221; was created in 40 minutes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=sB4kxMj0-IE\" target=\"_blank\">(<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Click\u00a0Here<\/span><\/a> for video)&#8230;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">I waited patiently for the Lord, He inclined and\u00a0 heard my cry.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">He brought me up out of the pit, Out of the miry clay.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">I will sing,\u00a0 sing a new song&#8230; How long to sing this song?<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">You set my feet upon a rock, You made my foot steps firm.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Many will see, Many will see and hear.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">I will sing, sing a new song&#8230; How long to sing this song?<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The sermon focused on verses one and two of Psalm 40&#8230;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">One:\u00a0 I Wait Patiently&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The U2 song, and Psalm 40,\u00a0 balances the idea of patience with urgency.\u00a0 It begins with patience:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">&#8220;I waited patiently for the Lord.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This phrase is hotly debated in academic circles, and many different translations have been offered to more accurately reflect what the Hebrew actually says here.\u00a0 After all, the writer is mired in a bog, stuck in a desolate pit- the serene English translation- &#8220;I waited patiently&#8221; &#8211; doesn&#8217;t seem to quite fit.\u00a0 Here are some other translations&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;I waited impatiently for the Lord&#8230;&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Urgently, I waited&#8230;&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;I waited, and waited, and waited&#8230;&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class='et-box et-bio'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It&#8217;s as if David is saying:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;God, I&#8217;ve done my part.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t hold out om me!\u00a0 You&#8217;ve given me a new song, but how long?\u00a0 How long must I wait before I can really sing this new song?\u00a0 With everything that&#8217;s going on around me, how long must I wait for Your deliverance?&#8221;<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n<p>Patience gives way to urgency&#8230; and urgency gives way to faith.<\/p>\n<p>The verb means &#8220;am waiting&#8221;, &#8220;have been waiting,&#8221; &#8220;will keep on waiting.&#8221;\u00a0 And yet, the same ongoing tense applies to God&#8217;s response.\u00a0 Just like in Matthew 7, Jesus &#8220;is knocking&#8221; at the door.\u00a0 He &#8220;has been knocking,&#8221; and He will &#8220;continue to knock.&#8221;\u00a0 He keeps seeking.\u00a0 He keeps lifting us up.<\/p>\n<p>Waiting patiently isn&#8217;t a one and done deal.\u00a0 Every moment of our life is to be spent in trusting in God.<\/p>\n<p>Dietrich Bonhoeffer said that God only gives us grace for the moment.\u00a0 When we&#8217;re not constantly waiting upon the Lord, we start to stink inside.\u00a0 Keep knocking, Keep asking, Keep loving.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">One:\u00a0 He Inclines to Me&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>God bent down to listen to David.\u00a0 In fact, He keeps bending down to hear us. God is more ready to <a href=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/rescue-631484__180.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-7749\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/rescue-631484__180.jpg\" alt=\"rescue-631484__180\" width=\"271\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/rescue-631484__180.jpg 271w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/rescue-631484__180-207x136.jpg 207w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/rescue-631484__180-140x94.jpg 140w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 271px) 100vw, 271px\" \/><\/a>listen than we are to pray; He comes down to where we are.<\/p>\n<p>God waits patiently for us!\u00a0 He continues to be patient with us.\u00a0 As we continue to cry out to the Lord, He will hear our cry.\u00a0 God cares enough to listen to whatever is bothering me,\u00a0 whatever is hurting, whatever is making me afraid.<\/p>\n<p>Notice that there&#8217;s nothing specific in this passage telling us what David&#8217;s &#8220;miry pit&#8221; was.\u00a0 We can plug into this story.\u00a0 Whatever we are faced with- however big or small- God is willing to listen, come down, and help.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Two:\u00a0 Horrible Pit&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>When Joseph&#8217;s brothers wanted to get rid of him,they dug a hole and threw him in.\u00a0 Same with Jeremiah.\u00a0 He was stuck in a pit and sinking deeper. But God says, &#8220;I&#8217;m there.\u00a0 I&#8217;m listening. I&#8217;m willing to pull you out.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Two:\u00a0 Sets My Feet on a Rock&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The Rock is a metaphor used throughout scripture.\u00a0 When our feet are placed upon The Rock we&#8217;re put in a place of God&#8217;s protection and security.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<div class='tabs-left et_sliderfx_fade et_sliderauto_false et_sliderauto_speed_5000 et_slidertype_left_tabs clearfix'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='et_left_tabs_bg'><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<ul class='et-tabs-control'>\n\t\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tDeuteronomy 32:4\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tExodus 17:6\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\t1 Corinthians 10:4\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tLuke 6:48\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\t1 Corinthians 3:10-11\n\t\t<\/a><\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul> <!-- .et-tabs-control --> \n\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content'>\n\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-main-wrap'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-wrapper'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tHe is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he.\n\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tI will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb. Strike the rock, and water will come out of it for the people to drink.&#8221; So Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel.\n\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tThey all ate the same spiritual food and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ.\n\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tHe is like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built.\n\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tBy the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as an expert builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should be careful how he builds.\u00a0 For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div> <!-- .tabs-left -->\n<p>Whatever the culture may say, we stand on the word of God.\u00a0 We build our lives on the reality of Christ.\u00a0 That is the foundation of our lives.\u00a0 If we&#8217;re built on the foundation of Christ, we&#8217;ll get through any storm.\u00a0 It may not be easy, we&#8217;ll get through it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Two:\u00a0 Establishes My Goings&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>God does not cause storms to happen.\u00a0 He does not cause anyone to get sick.\u00a0 He does not cause misfortune.\u00a0 He doesn&#8217;t cause cancer.\u00a0 But everything comes through the filtered hand of God so that when it reaches us it&#8217;s nowhere as bad as it could be.<\/p>\n<p>And beyond the immediate storm, God remains in the mix to help us get out of it.\u00a0 He hears my cry and gets right down into the muck with me.<\/p>\n<p>We don&#8217;t have a &#8220;Woe is Me&#8221; theology.<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-info'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When Joseph reflected back on the Pit that his brothers had dumped him into, he said (Genesis 50:20)&#8230; <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">God turns bad into good, but He doesn&#8217;t send bad.<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Is there anything worse than a grumpy Christian?\u00a0 God is asking us to continually waiting for Him, <a href=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/sunflower-402249__180.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-6634\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/sunflower-402249__180.jpg\" alt=\"sunflower-402249__180\" width=\"218\" height=\"145\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/sunflower-402249__180.jpg 270w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/sunflower-402249__180-140x94.jpg 140w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 218px) 100vw, 218px\" \/><\/a>because He is constantly listening to us, putting us on the Rock.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=romans+8%3A31-39&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\">Romans 8:38-29<\/a><\/span> tells us that NOTHING can separate us from the love of Jesus Christ our Lord&#8230; even a slimy pit of trouble.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #003300;\">Whatever we&#8217;re facing in life, our God is right there with us&#8230;<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The First Night of the New Reality&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<div class='et-box et-shadow'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Similar to what happened at PUMC this weekend, a young boy lost his Mom and a father lost his Wife.\u00a0 After the funeral, the dad tucked the boy into bed and went down the hall into his own bedroom; to the now half empty bed he had shared with his wife.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The boy was restless, tossed and turned.\u00a0 After a few minutes, he ran down the hall and knocked on Daddy&#8217;s door.\u00a0 &#8220;Daddy, can I come into bed with you?&#8221;\u00a0 The boy crawls into bed, and the dad rolls over.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A few seconds later, the boy says, &#8220;Daddy, can you please roll back over and face me? I&#8217;m scared.\u00a0 But I know if your face is looking at me I know it will be ok.&#8221;<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As we wait patiently for the Lord, He will hear our cry and crawl right down into that pit with us.\u00a0 And we will sing that new song as He is looking lovingly right back at us.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">\u00a0Quiz Time!<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #000080;\">As you reflect on what you&#8217;ve just heard\/read, give this quiz a try.\u00a0 If you don&#8217;t understand an answer (or if you disagree with the &#8220;correct&#8221;
