Jacob found a stone to rest his head against and lay down to sleep.<\/p>\n<p>12 As he slept, he dreamed of a stairway that reached from the earth up to heaven. And he saw the angels of God going up and down the stairway.<\/p>\n<p>13 At the top of the stairway stood the Lord, and he said, &#8220;I am the Lord, the God of your grandfather Abraham, and the God of your father, Isaac. The ground you are lying on belongs to you. I am giving it to you and your descendants.<\/p>\n<p>14 Your descendants will be as numerous as the dust of the earth! They will spread out in all directions\u2014to the west and the east, to the north and the south. And all the families of the earth will be blessed through you and your descendants.<\/p>\n<p>15 What&#8217;s more, I am with you, and I will protect you wherever you go. One day I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have finished giving you everything I have promised you.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>16 Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, &#8220;Surely the Lord is in this place, and I wasn&#8217;t even aware of it!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>17 But he was also afraid and said, &#8220;What an awesome place this is! It is none other than the house of God, the very gateway to heaven!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>18 The next morning Jacob got up very early. He took the stone he had rested his head against, and he set it upright as a memorial pillar. Then he poured olive oil over it.<\/p>\n<p>19 He named that place Bethel (which means &#8220;house of God&#8221;), although the name of the nearby village was Luz.<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>In November 1971, the rock band Led Zeppelin released the song &#8220;Stairway to Heaven.&#8221;\u00a0 It probably wasn&#8217;t intended to give a Christian message, but its lyrics ring true with the Bible:<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-download'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There&#8217;s a lady who&#8217;s sure all that glitters is gold.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And she&#8217;s buying a stairway to heaven.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When she gets there she knows, if the stores are all closed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">With a word she can get what she came for.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ooh, ooh, and she&#8217;s buying a stairway to heaven.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>(<span style=\"text-decoration: underline; things were a mess!\u00a0 Our soldiers were in Vietnam, and some buglers were in the Watergate hotel.\u00a0 We were unsure of where to go.\u00a0 We didn&#8217;t trust our leaders.\u00a0 We were trying to figure things out for ourselves (&#8220;to each his own&#8221;).\u00a0 We were trying to find heaven on our own terms, thinking that we could earn our way into God&#8217;s graces, not trusting that God gives His graces away!<\/p>\n<p>We tried to find that stairway to heaven by defining God in our own terms.\u00a0 But we couldn&#8217;t find\u00a0 it.<\/p>\n<p>In 1971 there was a search for spiritual truth much like there is today.\u00a0 Perhaps, this song has captivated countless millions of people of all ages throughout the world for 44 years because we human beings are- without exception- seeking a Stairway to heaven.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.<\/span><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0 <strong>\u00a0Hebrews 11:6\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Jacob: A Man on the Run&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>A few years after Led Zeppelin released &#8220;Stairway to Heaven,&#8221; Paul McCartney released &#8220;Band on the Run.&#8221;\u00a0 Thousands of years ago, Jacob was a man on the run.\u00a0 Much like us, he had tried to do things his own way, even stealing his brother&#8217;s birthright.\u00a0 And now he was on the run, fearing that his brother would kill him.\u00a0 Jacob listened to the culture, to the popular, to those who deceived him.\u00a0 Jacob lied and deceived others.<\/p>\n<p>He was trying to build his own stairway to heaven and happiness.\u00a0 But all the things he did didn&#8217;t get him the &#8220;stairway to heaven.&#8221;\u00a0 Instead it got him a rock for a pillow and put him on the run.\u00a0 He had to be angry,\u00a0 depressed; constantly covering up one\u00a0 lie with another.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Jacob:\u00a0 Called by God&#8217;s Prevenient Grace<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>But out of the blue; even while sleeping on a rock for a pillow, God burst through and appears to Jacob.<\/p>\n<p>Notice that the Biblical description of this Ladder shows that it is not simply a way to get to heaven.\u00a0\u00a0 Verse 12 of our passage tells us that angels of God were &#8220;going up and down the stairway.&#8221;\u00a0 God isn&#8217;t just standing on the top of the stairway yelling to Jacob, &#8220;Ok,\u00a0 come on up!&#8221;\u00a0 This isn&#8217;t simply a porthole for us to get to heaven; it&#8217;s an active two-way escalator where God and humans interact with each other!<\/p>\n<p>Is there any doubt that God led\u00a0 Jacob to that time and place?\u00a0 Even though Jacob was messing things up, God comes down to tell him that He will keep His promises.\u00a0 Jacob was running, but God was always there.\u00a0 God remained in Jacob&#8217;s life, but he didn&#8217;t know it.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">&#8220;Surely the Lord is in this place, and I wasn&#8217;t even aware of it!&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>God was here and I almost missed it!\u00a0 But God told me that He would stand by me and empower me so that His promises could be kept.<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-warning'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Have you ever been on the run or in an unsettling situation?\u00a0 Maybe you were having trouble with our faith; maybe you were going through a time when you thought to yourself, &#8220;I have gone too far, I have walked away from God for too long, surely God will\u00a0 not hear me\u00a0 or care for me.?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Then suddenly- God made Himself known to you and you saw that, indeed, God was right there with you all along ready to forgive,\u00a0 to assist, and to love you! <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And then you think like Jacob, &#8220;Surely the Lord was in this place and I was not aware of it.&#8221;<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n<p>Jesus- Emmanuel (God with us) has promised &#8220;I am with you.. I\u00a0 will\u00a0 not leave you&#8230;&#8221;\u00a0 and\u00a0 this is a promise we can\u00a0 all bank on!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Us: Trying to Build Our Own Stairway to Heaven?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In contemporary cultures, there seems\u00a0 to be a trend\u00a0 that all faith systems will eventually lead to the God of heaven.\u00a0 If\u00a0 you or I were asked\u00a0 by someone seeking God\u00a0 who believes that all religions are pretty much the same,\u00a0 would\u00a0 we be able to explain the major differences between Christianity and other faiths?\u00a0 Here are a couple of verses to consider&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">1 Peter 3:15\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Colossians 4:6<\/span><\/strong> \u00a0 \u00a0 Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\n<li>People assume (and human logic dictates) that all religions have nearly the same moral teachings and ideals.\u00a0 There might be different names for God, practices and\u00a0 expressions of the faith, but it is the\u00a0 same\u00a0 God.<\/li>\n<li>They assume that while religions may travel different roads, they all lead to the same God.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And yet, here&#8217;s just a bit of what the bible says&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<div class='tabs-left et_sliderfx_fade et_sliderauto_false et_sliderauto_speed_5000 et_slidertype_left_tabs clearfix'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='et_left_tabs_bg'><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<ul class='et-tabs-control'>\n\t\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tJohn 14:6\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tJohn 10:9\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\t1 Timothy 2:5\n\t\t<\/a><\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul> <!-- .et-tabs-control --> \n\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content'>\n\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-main-wrap'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-wrapper'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tJesus answered, &#8220;I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.\n\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tI am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. He will come in and go out, and find pasture.\n\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tFor there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div> <!-- .tabs-left -->\n<p>There&#8217;s only one way.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">God:\u00a0 He Comes Down to Us on His Stairway!<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>John 1:51 says something pretty astonishing when considering Jacob&#8217;s Ladder:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">&#8220;I tell you the truth, you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.&#8221;<\/span> <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Jesus said this to Nathaniel.\u00a0 But like this ladder in Jacob&#8217;s vision, Jesus says that we will experience &#8220;angels of God ascending and descending\u00a0 ON THE SON OF MAN!\u00a0 The &#8220;stairway to&#8221; (and from heaven) isn&#8217;t a thing.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not some golden ladder.\u00a0 The Stairway to Heaven is Jesus!\u00a0 Jesus is the Way to Heaven.\u00a0 Jesus is the Door to Heaven.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">And yet, it&#8217;s a two way escalator.\u00a0 Angels are going up and down.\u00a0 On the mount of Transfiguration, Peter, James, and John were invited to see a glimpse of Jesus in His glory, talking with Moses and Elijah!\u00a0 But they couldn&#8217;t stay on the Mountain.\u00a0 They had to come down and\u00a0 go into service. (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew+17%3A1-8&amp;version=TLB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matthew\u00a017:1-8<\/a><\/span>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Through Christ, we can see the Glory of God.\u00a0 And we can also be refreshed and recharged in order to go into His service.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Jacob wasn&#8217;t expecting God.\u00a0 He was in the middle of a desert, after all!\u00a0 But out of the blue, God shows up.\u00a0 God is wherever\u00a0 we are.\u00a0 You don&#8217;t have to be in a special building or in a special frame of mind.\u00a0 God is with us always.\u00a0\u00a0 In John 16, Jesus tells us that the Holy Spirit is always present to lead us into Truth.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Escalators: They can be Scary!<\/span><\/h3>\n<div class='et-box et-info'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Willie Mays began his major league baseball career\u00a0 with only one hit in his first 26 at bats.\u00a0 Though he went on to hit 660 home runs and\u00a0 steal\u00a0 more than 300 bases, his debut\u00a0 was so unimpressive it seemed unlikely he would last more than a few weeks as a big leaguer,\u00a0 let alone become one of the greatest to play the game.\u00a0 He had a very uncertain future in baseball.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The turning point for Mays occurred when his manager, Leo Durocher, found him crying in the dugout after yet another miserable performance at the plate.\u00a0 The coach put his arm around Mays and said,\u00a0 &#8220;What&#8217;s the matter, son?&#8221;\u00a0 Mays said,\u00a0 &#8220;I\u00a0 can&#8217;t hit up here,\u00a0 I belong in the minor leagues.&#8221;\u00a0 Durocher said this to Willie Mays: &#8220;As long as I&#8217;m manager of the Giants, you&#8217;ll be my center fielder.&#8221;<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n<p>We know how this story turned out; Willie Mays turned out to be one of the game&#8217;s legends.\u00a0 Fortunately there was someone there to encourage him and tell him,\u00a0 &#8220;I am behind you, this will work out.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>We also face times in our life when we are discouraged and despairing because our future seems so uncertain.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<div class='et-simple-slider et_sliderfx_slide et_sliderauto_true et_sliderauto_speed_3000 et_slidertype_simple'>\n\t\t\t<div class='et-simple-slides'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-wrapper'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Doubt&#8230;<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/span>\n\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Finances&#8230;<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/span>\n\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Wrong decisions&#8230;<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/span>\n\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Can&#8217;t do our Job&#8230;<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/span>\n\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Can&#8217;t get a Job&#8230;<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/span>\n\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Can&#8217;t do what God wants us to do&#8230;<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/span>\n\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Worried about Health&#8230;<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div> <!-- .et-simple-slider -->\n\t\t\n<p>Like Willie Mays, we need a word of encouragement.\u00a0\u00a0 We need to know that the &#8220;coach&#8221; is behind us.\u00a0 We need to know that things will\u00a0 work out. The good news (the Gospel!), is that God meets these needs!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/escalator-719814__180.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-6939\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/escalator-719814__180.jpg\" alt=\"escalator-719814__180\" width=\"270\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/escalator-719814__180.jpg 270w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/escalator-719814__180-140x94.jpg 140w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 270px) 100vw, 270px\" \/><\/a>In Jesus, God became a man and came down that escalator.\u00a0 In His mercy,\u00a0 God broke through the desert of our humanity and entered our lives.<\/p>\n<p>Jacob&#8217;s Ladder- that &#8220;Stairway to Heaven&#8221; appears in our own deserts too.
