and they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth.<\/p>\n<p>30 So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, &#8220;It is finished!&#8221; And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>Under the Hot Sun on Mr. Chant&#8217;s Farm&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>How do you quench your thirst?\u00a0 Working during the summer during those hot days back in the 1990s (Pastor Jim&#8217;s childhood&#8230;), the best thing ever was the ice cold water from the well!\u00a0 Nothing quenches physical thirst like cold water.<\/p>\n<p>But what about &#8220;spiritual thirst?&#8221;\u00a0 What if you&#8217;re really feeling low?\u00a0 What if you feel out of place, rejected by friends?\u00a0 What if it seems that nothing is going right?\u00a0 How do you quench THAT thirst???<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Living Water&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=john+4%3A1-26&amp;version=TLB\" target=\"_blank\">John chapter 4<\/a><\/span>, Jesus has a conversation with a Samaritan woman at the well.\u00a0 Jesus opens the conversation by asking her for a drink.\u00a0 He then uses the opportunity to share that He can give her &#8220;Living Water&#8221;- that He can give her the fulfilling joyful life she was intended to live.<\/p>\n<p>But in John chapter 19, Jesus is hanging on the cross.\u00a0 The source of Living Water is parched, and He cries out &#8220;I am thirsty.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000; font-size: 14pt;\">What&#8217;s going on here?!?<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>These words seem strangely out of place among the more dramatic statements He made from the cross.\u00a0 Why, &#8220;I Thirst&#8221;???<\/p>\n<p>On one level, He&#8217;s purposely fulfilling prophecies from scripture.\u00a0 John 19:28 makes\u00a0 this clear:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"color: #003300;\">After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, &#8220;I thirst!&#8221;<\/span> <\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>So Jesus is saying &#8220;I Thirst&#8221; to fulfill passages such as&#8230;.<\/p>\n<table class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"height: 145px; border-color: #1922c2;\" border=\"12\" width=\"371\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>Psalm 22:15<\/td>\n<td>My strength is dried up like a potsherd,<br \/>\nAnd My tongue clings to My jaws;<br \/>\nYou have brought Me to the dust of death.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Psalm 69:21<\/td>\n<td>They also gave me gall for my food,<br \/>\nAnd for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><em><br \/>\n<\/em> <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Bu there are a few things we can learn from this statement&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Lessons on the Physical Level&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>A little Christianity 101 for a minute&#8230; Jesus was fully human AND He was fully God.\u00a0 That means He possessed a human nature just like you and I.\u00a0 Here on the cross, the reality of that humanity and divine have a real tension point as He suffers severely on the cross.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">\u00a0<strong>1 Peter 4:1-2<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">So then, since Christ suffered physical pain, you must arm yourselves with the same attitude he had, and be ready to suffer, too. For if you have suffered physically for Christ, you have finished with sin. You won&#8217;t spend the rest of your lives chasing your own desires, but you will be anxious to do the will of God.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It&#8217;s not strange that He thirsted; He was also thirsty as He traveled through Samaria.\u00a0 He was tired from the journey and asked the woman for a drink (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John+4%3A1-7&amp;version=MSG\" target=\"_blank\">John 4:7<\/a><\/span>).\u00a0 So is it any wonder, that at the end of His life- after being flogged half to death and nailed to the cross for hours- that He should say &#8220;I Thirst.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; background-color: #ffff99;\">Jesus was fully human!\u00a0 He has experienced it too!<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-info'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Part of the mission of PUMC is in providing water for those who don&#8217;t have it.\u00a0 Part of our Shared Ministry money goes to support missionaries in the work of providing a cold cup of water along with the One who calls Himself &#8220;The Living Water.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">To learn more about how we are helping provide water around the globe through our Shared Ministries, click this button:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href='http:\/\/www.umcmission.org\/search.aspx?ModuleID=4666&#038;keywords=wells&#038;multiSite=False' class='small-button smallorange' target=\"_blank\">Water<\/a>\u00a0<\/div><\/div>\n<p>In John 7:37-38, Jesus declares:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">On the last day, the climax of the festival, Jesus stood and shouted to the crowds, &#8220;Anyone who is thirsty may come to me! \u00a0 Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, &#8216;Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.'&#8221;\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0 NLT<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And yet, tragically, ironically- the Fountain of quenching thirsts is Himself thirsty.\u00a0 The Source of life is dying and drying up.\u00a0 God came to earth to offer living eternal water to humankind, but humanity chose to destroy the Spring of Heaven.\u00a0 Here on the cross, sinful humanity was getting its way by watching the water of life drying up.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"background-color: #cc99ff;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #003300;\">BUT-\u00a0 O thanks be to God; Sunday was coming and the water would flow once again!<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Lessons on the Spiritual Level&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This scene takes us back to Jeremiah 2:12-13 which says: (<span style=\"font-size: 10pt; color: #993366;\"><em>quotation from The Message<\/em><\/span>)<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #003300;\">&#8220;Stand in shock, heavens, at what you see!<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #003300;\"> Throw up your hands in disbelief \u2014 this can&#8217;t be!&#8221;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #003300;\"> GOD&#8217;s Decree. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003300;\">&#8220;My people have committed a compound sin:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #003300;\"> they&#8217;ve walked out on me, the fountain<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #003300;\"> Of fresh flowing waters, and then dug cisterns \u2014 <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #003300;\"> cisterns that leak, cisterns that are no better than sieves.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Our Old Testament ancestors walked away from God, choosing (as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adamhamilton.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Adam\u00a0Hamilton<\/a> writes) to &#8220;instead to drink muddy runoff water, building cisterns to catch and drink it; yet even this could not satisfy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Through Jesus&#8217; words, God shows that the way they have chosen cannot work.\u00a0 The people chose to find their own way and to fill their spiritually parched souls with water which could not satisfy.<\/p>\n<p>So, when Jesus said, &#8220;I Thirst&#8221; He was telling us, <strong><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&#8220;OK.\u00a0 Try it your way and look at what it leads to!\u00a0 ONLY by coming to the True Well which will never run dry can you find satisfaction, fulfillment, and refreshment.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<div class='tabs-left et_sliderfx_fade et_sliderauto_false et_sliderauto_speed_5000 et_slidertype_left_tabs clearfix'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='et_left_tabs_bg'><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<ul class='et-tabs-control'>\n\t\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tIsaiah\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tJohn\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tPsalm\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tProverbs\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tRomans\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tJohn\n\t\t<\/a><\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul> <!-- .et-tabs-control --> \n\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content'>\n\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-main-wrap'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-wrapper'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tIsa 58:11 The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail. NIV\n\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tJohn 4:14 but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.&#8221; NIV\n\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tPs 107:9 for he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things. NIV\n\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tProv 14:12 There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death. NIV\n\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tRom 3:23-24 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, NIV\n\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tJohn 17:3-4 Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. NIV\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div> <!-- .tabs-left -->\n<p>Our way doesn&#8217;t work!\u00a0 It might seem right, but it leads to death.\u00a0 It leads to the constant thirst of always worrying or living in fear and regret.\u00a0 Instead we need to always look for an encounter with God.\u00a0 Arguing about &#8220;churchy things&#8221; is wallowing in &#8220;our way.&#8221;\u00a0 Elvis and Frank Sinatra got it wrong!\u00a0 Instead of fighting for our way, we need to step back and look for God&#8217;s source of Living Water.\u00a0 If we look for God, He will reach out to us.<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-shadow'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Thirsting for a Cool Car (<span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"><em><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">with an FM converter<\/span><\/em><\/span>)!!!<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #333300;\">It was March 1977. \u00a0 I was a student at Burlington County College.\u00a0 <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><span style=\"color: #333300;\">I had a job.\u00a0 <\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"color: #333300;\">I was a fireman.<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"color: #333300;\">I was an EMT<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"color: #333300;\">I was wearing multi-colored bell bottoms!<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"color: #333300;\">I had a gold butterfly necklace<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"color: #333300;\">I had long bushy hair<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #333300;\">I was living the dream!\u00a0 I was doing it My Way!!!<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/car-Camero-101975__180.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-6399\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/car-Camero-101975__180.jpg\" alt=\"car Camero-101975__180\" width=\"270\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/car-Camero-101975__180.jpg 270w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/car-Camero-101975__180-140x94.jpg 140w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 270px) 100vw, 270px\" \/><\/a><em><span style=\"color: #333300;\">Then that Gold Camaro came into my life!\u00a0 I thought I had it made before I saw that car on the lot, but&#8230; that Gold Camaro!\u00a0 My Baby!!!<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #333300;\">But it wasn&#8217;t long before that Gold Camaro stopped satisfying.\u00a0 It needed more.\u00a0 I needed more: an FM converter (AM wasn&#8217;t good enough anymore), Shag Carpeting (everyone else had it).<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<p>Eventually, we discover we want more and more and that nothing really satisfies.\u00a0 When we try to meet our thirsts with our own desires, we soon discover that\u00a0 what we&#8217;re really doing is running from God&#8217;s call on our lives.\u00a0 We&#8217;re trying to replace God with all of those things, thinking that they will build relationships, influence people, and make us happy.\u00a0 It may work for a moment, but Our Way can never refresh the dryness that&#8217;s deep inside.<\/p>\n<p>How about you?\u00a0 What&#8217;s your &#8220;Camaro?&#8221;\u00a0 What are you thirsting for?\u00a0 What are you pouring your life into?<\/p>\n<p>On this 5th Sunday of Lent, Jesus offers refreshment for our parched, thirsty souls.\u00a0 He offers to all\u00a0 who are truly thirsting For God to fill our cup and quench this thirsting of our souls.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;
