Last summer, the “Ice Bucket” challenge raised milllions of dollars to fight ALS.\u00a0 In the same Spirit,\u00a0 former PUMC Associate Pastor Peter Jamieson (who is now the Pastor at Asbury UMC in Egg Harbor) has been challenging area churches (and even the bishop) to raise 250 pounds of food to be donated to a local\u00a0 food pantry.<\/p>\n

The challenge has spread and has now reached PUMC.\u00a0 Lori Mitchell, the youth leader of the Trinity\u00a0UMC <\/a><\/span>in Clayton, has challenged our BLAST Youth Group to raise 400 pounds of food (or the equivalent dollar amount) to be donated to the Pitman Food Pantry.<\/p>\n

We’ve Been Flocked!!!<\/span><\/h2>\n

On Sunday March 15 the following sign was taped to our door…<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

And Pink Flamingos Lined our Sidewalk!<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"BLAST<\/a>To call attention to the challenge, members of the Clayton G5 youth Group placed pink flamingos along our sidewalk and taped a message on our door announcing that we had been “flocked” by the G5 Youth Ministries of Trinity UMC, Clayton.<\/p>\n

We’re on it!\u00a0 At PUMC we also have a BLAST G<\/span><\/strong>lorifying God, G<\/span><\/strong>rowing in our faith, G<\/span><\/strong>athering with friends, G<\/span><\/strong>oing into the world, and G<\/span><\/strong>iving back to God and community. Christianity is all about practicing the G5s, and we’re honored to join with our Brothers and Sisters in Clayton!<\/p>\n

We’re on track to raise at least 400 pounds of food during the next 4 months.\u00a0 This challenge might appear to be social media “hype”, but along the way, we’re going to raise awareness of hunger and to help feed the poor in Pitman.<\/p>\n

This comes at a critical time, since the Pitman Food Pantry is currently in desperate need of\u00a0 staples such as cereal, peanut butter & jelly, and canned fruit.\u00a0 We’ve already placed a basket in our Narthex.\u00a0 It bears the sign “400 lbs of Food Please”, but it’s only the first of many baskets that will be filled before this is over.<\/p>\n
