But even the rulers with them sneered, saying, &#8220;He saved others; let Him save Himself if He is the Christ, the chosen of God.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>36 The soldiers also mocked Him, coming and offering Him sour wine,<\/p>\n<p>37 and saying, &#8220;If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>38 And an inscription also was written over Him in letters of Greek, Latin, and Hebrew:<\/p>\n<p>THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Famous Last Words<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Generally speaking, a person&#8217;s final words reveal what is on his or her mind and they reflect who they really are.\u00a0 A person&#8217;s final words can act like a truth serum where the person has no need for pretense.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-container et_sliderfx_fade et_sliderauto_false et_sliderauto_speed_5000 et_slidertype_top_tabs'>\n\t\t\t\t<ul class='et-tabs-control'>\n\t\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tJohn Wesley\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tSt. Thomas Becket\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tCharles Spurgeon\n\t\t<\/a><\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul> <!-- .et-tabs-control --> \n\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content'>\n\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-main-wrap'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-wrapper'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tOn his deathbead, John Wesley is reported to have said these 7 words as he died:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<strong><em><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #333300;\">Best of all, God is with us.<\/span><\/em><\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tSt. Thomas, the Archbishop of Canterbury, just before he was martyred in 1179 said:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<strong><em><span style=\"color: #333300; font-size: 14pt;\">I am ready to die for my Lord, that in my blood the Church may obtain liberty and peace.<\/span><\/em><\/strong>&#8220;\n\t\t<\/div><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tCharles Haddon Spurgeon, the great Baptist teacher (and author of the popular &#8220;Morning and Evening&#8221; devotionals), said as his last words:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><span style=\"color: #333300; font-size: 14pt;\">&#8220;Jesus Died for me.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/strong>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div> <!-- .et-tabs-container -->\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pancho_Villa\" target=\"_blank\">Pancho Villa<\/a><\/span>, the Mexican revolutionary, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #003300;\">&#8220;Don&#8217;t let it end like this.\u00a0 Tell\u00a0 them I said something.&#8221;<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>We might laugh at that last one, but Jesus <strong><em>said something<\/em><\/strong> just before He died on the cross of Calvary.\u00a0 And those words that Jesus spoke are still\u00a0 having an impact upon millions of lives and will continue to do so until He returns again.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While on the cross, it was difficult to breath, let alone speak&#8230; let alone to say something loud enough to be heard (and recorded) by the crowd.\u00a0 We need to take these words seriously; to listen up.\u00a0 We can&#8217;t gloss over them,\u00a0 because Jesus wanted us to hear them:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #800080; font-size: 14pt;\">&#8220;Father&#8230;\u00a0 forgive them;\u00a0 for they know not what they do&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Powerful, but haunting words in the face of those mocking Him.<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-bio'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, &#8220;Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.&#8221;\u00a0 He said to them, &#8220;When you pray, say: &#8220;&#8216;Father, \u00a0\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=luke+11%3A1-4&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\">Luke 11:1-2<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/div><\/div>\n<p>The Lord&#8217;s prayer began with the word &#8220;Father.&#8221;\u00a0 Jesus&#8217; carefully chosen words from the cross began with the word Father.\u00a0 Jesus is teaching us to pray, this time with His last words.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Who is &#8220;Them&#8221;?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>When Jesus prayed, &#8220;Father forgive THEM&#8221;, who is the &#8220;THEM&#8221; He is talking about?\u00a0 Perhaps it&#8217;s the:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Soldiers&#8230;\u00a0 The ones who are driving the spikes into His hands.\u00a0 They are guilty.\u00a0 Maybe they&#8217;re just following orders, but they- and we- can&#8217;t plead ignorance (Jesus says &#8220;they don&#8217;t know what they&#8217;re doing.&#8221;).<\/li>\n<li>The Crowd&#8230; The ones who demanded that Barabbas be released and Jesus crucified.\u00a0 The ones who stood by and mocked Jesus.\u00a0 Even if it&#8217;s not us &#8220;pulling the trigger,&#8221; don&#8217;t we all share in the guilt?<\/li>\n<li>The Religious Leaders&#8230; The ones who conspired to have Jesus crucified.\u00a0 The ones who were recognized as spiritual\u00a0 leaders and yet led the people to reject Jesus.<\/li>\n<li><strong>You and Me!<\/strong>\u00a0 We are part of the people who were there.\u00a0 We are guilty, and Jesus pleads with His Father for our forgiveness.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>WE are all\u00a0 guilty.\u00a0 When Jesus was on the cross you were on His mind (check out the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.metrolyrics.com\/when-he-was-on-the-cross-i-was-on-his-mind-lyrics-florida-boys.html\" target=\"_blank\">song<\/a><\/span> with the same title).\u00a0 If you were the only person in history who needed to be saved,\u00a0 Jesus still would have died for you.<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-warning'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Try putting your own name into the following blanks: <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;Father, forgive ____________ for ____________ doesn&#8217;t know what he&#8217;s (or she&#8217;s) doing.\u00a0 ______________ doesn&#8217;t have a clue.<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">The Request of the Prayer<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&#8220;Father forgive them&#8230;&#8221;\u00a0 The tense of the original Greek text is continuous.\u00a0 This opens the door for the possibility that this was something Jesus said several times.\u00a0 The Greek word is <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblehub.com\/greek\/863.htm\" target=\"_blank\">aphiemi<\/a>,<\/em> which means to &#8220;cancel, remit, pardon.&#8221;\u00a0 In other words, it&#8217;s like if you take out a loan to pay off a credit card.\u00a0 The bank sends the credit card company a big check, and then the credit card company sends you a statement that says &#8220;Paid in Full.&#8221;\u00a0 That huge debt you could never pay down is GONE!\u00a0 It is forgiven.\u00a0 Then imagine that the bank sends you a statement saying that someone had anonymously paid off your loan!\u00a0 No debt.\u00a0 Forgiven.\u00a0 You don&#8217;t owe anything to the credit card company.\u00a0 You don&#8217;t owe anything to the bank who paid it off&#8230; \u00a0 You don&#8217;t owe anything to God.\u00a0 You can&#8217;t pay for your sins, but the debt is totally paid off.\u00a0 Jesus asked His father to forgive them.<\/p>\n<p>And the verb is ongoing.\u00a0 Just like we keep messing up (sinning), Jesus keeps on asking for our forgiveness.\u00a0 Just like we keep going on without knowing what we&#8217;re doing, Jesus keeps pleading for our forgiveness.\u00a0 Just like we keep racking up the debt, Jesus keeps paying it off for us.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>As Jesus was laid on the cross:\u00a0 He prayed, &#8220;Father forgive them.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>As the soldiers drove nails through His hands and feet:\u00a0 He prayed, &#8220;Father forgive them.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>As the cross was dropped into place: He prayed, &#8220;Father forgive them.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>As he hung on the cross and was mocked: He prayed, &#8220;Father forgive them.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It&#8217;s interesting to note that He could have prayed &#8220;Father judge them&#8221; or Father avenge me.&#8221;\u00a0 But these final words of Jesus reveal His true character: He prayed, &#8220;Father forgive them.&#8221;\u00a0 And He keeps praying this even for us.\u00a0 The prayer echoes through eternity.\u00a0 We ARE guilty, but He continues to plead for us.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/philipyancey.com\/whats-so-amazing-about-grace\" target=\"_blank\">Phillip Yancey<\/a><\/span>, in his book &#8220;What&#8217;s So Amazing about Grace?&#8221; gives some great insight when he reminds us that the word forgive contains the word &#8220;GIVE.&#8221;\u00a0 To forgive is to cancel the debt of someone so that they never have to pay us back for what they&#8217;ve done to us.\u00a0 It&#8217;s to give to someone who doesn&#8217;t deserve it (or who never even asks for it).<\/p>\n<p>Could you forgive a drunk driver who totals your car, lands you in the hospital- and then gets away with it?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">The Focus of the Prayer<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The focal\u00a0 point of the prayer is that all of us need forgiveness &#8220;for we know not what we do.&#8221;\u00a0 Paul said in <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=romans+5%3A1-8&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\">Romans 5:8<\/a><\/span>, &#8220;While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Someone once did a study and determined that fish don&#8217;t know they&#8217;re wet!\u00a0 In the same way, even though we&#8217;re soaked with sin, we don&#8217;t know we&#8217;re sinful.\u00a0 The 19th century evangelist <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/J._C._Ryle\" target=\"_blank\">J.C.\u00a0Ryle<\/a><\/span> once said,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;The very animals whose smell is most offensive to us have no idea that they are offensive, and are not offensive to one another.\u00a0 And man,\u00a0 fallen man, has just no idea what a vile thing sin is in the sight of God.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>We don&#8217;t realize that we&#8217;re sinners.\u00a0 We&#8217;re good at explaining away everything and changing our definition of what&#8217;s sinful.\u00a0 But the Holy Spirit comes upon us and says &#8220;Hey, that&#8217;s not right.&#8221;\u00a0 Then the Holy Spirit takes over for us.\u00a0 The Holy Spirit leads us to repentance.<\/p>\n<p>We\u00a0 don&#8217;t even know we stink!<\/p>\n<p>Paul said the same thing in <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=romans+3%3A9-20&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\">Romans 3:10-18<\/a><\/span> (<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><em>quoted from Eugene Peterson&#8217;s &#8220;The Message&#8221;<\/em><\/span>)&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">10 There&#8217;s nobody living right, not even one,<br \/>\n11 nobody who knows the score, nobody alert for God. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800080;\">12 They&#8217;ve all taken the wrong turn; they&#8217;ve all wandered down blind alleys.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #800080;\">No one&#8217;s living right; I can&#8217;t find a single one. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800080;\">13 Their throats are gaping graves, their tongues slick as mud slides.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #800080;\">Every word they speak is tinged with poison. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800080;\">14 They open their mouths and pollute the air. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800080;\">15 They race for the honor of sinner-of-the-year, <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800080;\">16 litter the land with heartbreak and ruin, <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800080;\">17 Don&#8217;t know the first thing about living with others. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800080;\">18 They never give God the time of day.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Jesus acknowledges our sinfulness:\u00a0 &#8220;<strong><em><span style=\"color: #333300;\">They know not what they do.<\/span><\/em><\/strong>&#8221;\u00a0 We ARE &#8220;doing sin.&#8221;\u00a0 We are worthy of judgement.\u00a0 And yet Jesus- from the cross- pleads for us.\u00a0 The Apostle John writes in <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1+john+2&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\">1\u00a0John\u00a02:1-2<\/a><\/span>\u00a0 (<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><em>quote from &#8220;The Message&#8221;<\/em><\/span>) :<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">I write this, dear children, to guide you out of sin. But if anyone does sin, we have a Priest-Friend in the presence of the Father: Jesus Christ, righteous Jesus. \u00a0 When he served as a sacrifice for our sins, he solved the sin problem for good \u2014 not only ours, but the whole world&#8217;s.<\/span> <\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Who did Jesus die for?\u00a0 Who&#8217;s the focus of His prayer for forgiveness?\u00a0 For all of those who &#8220;know not what they do.&#8221;\u00a0 He prayed for us&#8230; and He&#8217;s still praying for us.\u00a0 He&#8217;s willing to pay the price.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">The Reason for the Prayer<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Why did Jesus feel He needed to say this prayer while enduring the pain of the cross?\u00a0 Getting the breath to speak was nearly impossible.\u00a0 And\u00a0 yet- from the cross- He prayed, &#8220;<strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><em>Father forgive them, for they know not what they do.<\/em><\/span><\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Jesus&#8217; words on the cross are meant to serve as an example for us to imitate.\u00a0 He didn&#8217;t pray this in silence&#8230; He certainly could have.\u00a0 But He shouted it out so we could hear.\u00a0 He wanted us to know that we are forgiven.\u00a0 He also showed us with His dying breaths what it means to be a disciple of Christ.\u00a0 We are to imitate Christ (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=ephesians+5&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\">Ephesians\u00a05:1-2<\/a><\/span>):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children\u00a0 and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.\u00a0<\/span><\/em> \u00a0 NIV<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>God wants us to be in Relationship with Him; not to be Religious.\u00a0 He wants us to be His reflection in the world.<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-bio'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;People who regularly forgive others&#8230;, find it easier to believe and trust in the grace of God because their hears have been enlarged by grace, and they freely offer it to others&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">-Adam Hamilton, &#8220;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.adamhamilton.org\/store\/9781426746802#.VOyJaC6LOSo\" target=\"_blank\">Final Words from the Cross<\/a><\/span>&#8220;, page 29<\/div><\/div>\n<p>On the cross, Jesus models forgiveness and He does it in the most difficult of circumstances.\u00a0 With railroad spikes through His wrists and feet, a crown of thorns pressed an inch deep into His scalp, His skin on His back ripped open from the flogging, people continuing to insult Him&#8230; He continues to say &#8220;Father, forgive them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Jesus is saying: &#8220;This is what true forgiveness looks like.&#8221;\u00a0 Jesus forgave with no reservations.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">The Repeat of the Prayer<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Freedom-in-Christ-Cross-Shirt-_IMG_0559.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-2411\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Freedom-in-Christ-Cross-Shirt-_IMG_0559-300x270.jpg\" alt=\"Freedom in Christ Cross Shirt _IMG_0559\" width=\"169\" height=\"152\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Freedom-in-Christ-Cross-Shirt-_IMG_0559-300x270.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Freedom-in-Christ-Cross-Shirt-_IMG_0559.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 169px) 100vw, 169px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As disciples of this Jesus, we are called to repeat this prayer; in words, in thoughts, and in and deeds.\u00a0 This prayer is meant to become our prayer.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus came into the world to save sinners.\u00a0 He didn&#8217;t come to condemn (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=john+3%3A1-21&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\">John 3:16-17<\/a><\/span>).\u00a0 He came to save.\u00a0 He came to forgive.\u00a0 And- He came to show us how to forgive others.<\/p>\n<p>God has forgiven you.\u00a0 How do you feel about that?\u00a0 You have two options:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>&#8220;Oh that&#8217;s nice, but I&#8217;m a good person.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t need forgiveness; save it for those bad people.\u00a0 Thanks anyway.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Forgive ME?\u00a0 I can&#8217;t believe it!\u00a0 Psalm 32 is\u00a0 really true when it says (<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><em>from The Message<\/em><\/span>): &#8216;Count yourself lucky, how happy you must be \u2014\u00a0 you get a fresh start, your slate&#8217;s wiped clean.&#8217; &#8220;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Friends, GOD HAS FORGIVEN YOU!\u00a0 To the extent and depth that you know and feel forgiven by God, you&#8217;re going to be able to forgive others.\u00a0 To the extent that you know and accept this forgiveness, you&#8217;ll be free to experience the beauty and joy of life.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">\u00a0Quiz Time!<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #000080;\">As you reflect on what you&#8217;ve just heard\/read, give this quiz a try.\u00a0 If you don&#8217;t understand an answer (or if you disagree with the &#8220;correct&#8221;
