At about that time some astrologers from eastern lands arrived in Jerusalem, asking, \u00a0 \u201cWhere is the newborn King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in far-off eastern lands and have come to worship him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>3 King Herod was deeply disturbed by their question, and all Jerusalem was filled with rumors.\u00a0 He called a meeting of the Jewish religious leaders. \u201cDid the prophets tell us where the Messiah would be born?\u201d he asked. \u00a0 \u201cYes, in Bethlehem,\u201d they said, \u201cfor this is what the prophet Micah wrote:\u00a0 \u2018O little town of Bethlehem, you are not just an unimportant Judean village, for a Governor shall rise from you to rule my people Israel.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>7 Then Herod sent a private message to the astrologers, asking them to come to see him; at this meeting he found out from them the exact time when they first saw the star. Then he told them,\u00a0 \u201cGo to Bethlehem and search for the child. And when you find him, come back and tell me so that I can go and worship him too!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>9 After this interview the astrologers started out again. And look! The star appeared to them again, standing over Bethlehem.\u00a0 Their joy knew no bounds! \u00a0 Entering the house where the baby and Mary, his mother, were, they threw themselves down before him, worshiping. Then they opened their presents and gave him gold, frankincense, and myrrh.<\/p>\n<p>12 But when they returned to their own land, they didn\u2019t go through Jerusalem to report to Herod, for God had warned them in a dream to go home another way.<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Wise Men Trivia&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><div class='et-learn-more clearfix'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class='heading-more'>How many were there?<span class='et_learnmore_arrow'><span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='learn-more-content'>The Bible doesn&#8217;t say.\u00a0 The only reason we have the image of &#8220;Three Wise Men&#8221; is because the Bible mentions three gifts.\u00a0 But would the arrival of 3 men cause such a stir?\u00a0 More likely, the party of &#8220;wise men&#8221; consisted of several hundred people.<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div><div class='et-learn-more clearfix'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class='heading-more'>When did they arrive?<span class='et_learnmore_arrow'><span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='learn-more-content'>Traditionally it was 12 days after Christmas. But note that Herod tried to kill all babies up to two years old. Note also that by the time the Magi arrived, Mary and Joseph were in a &#8220;house&#8221; (not in a stable).<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div> <div class='et-learn-more clearfix'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class='heading-more'>What was this star?<span class='et_learnmore_arrow'><span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='learn-more-content'>There are several theories on what it might have been:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>7BC- An unusual conjunction of Saturn and Jupiter which could have appeared as a new star.<\/li>\n<li>3BC- Haley&#8217;s Comet flared through the skies<\/li>\n<li>A supernova<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But ultimately, God is in charge of nature. Is it such a stretch that He could have used a star to announce the birth of His son?<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div><div class='et-learn-more clearfix'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class='heading-more'>Is Wise Men an oxymoron?<span class='et_learnmore_arrow'><span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='learn-more-content'>Many people (perhaps up to 50% of the human race&#8230;) may feel that the words &#8220;wise&#8221; and &#8220;men&#8221; belong together about as much as &#8220;Jumbo&#8221; and &#8220;Shrimp,&#8221; or &#8220;Civil&#8221; and &#8220;War.&#8221; The term used in the Bible is &#8220;Magi&#8221; (from which we get our word &#8220;magician.&#8221;)<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">The Search for the Messiah&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<div class='et-box et-shadow'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><a href=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/star-trek-311704__180.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-5370\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/star-trek-311704__180-300x150.png\" alt=\"star-trek-311704__180\" width=\"138\" height=\"69\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/star-trek-311704__180-300x150.png 300w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/star-trek-311704__180.png 360w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 138px) 100vw, 138px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><em><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">&#8220;Bethlehem- the Final frontier.\u00a0 This is the voyage of the search of Jesus the Messiah&#8230; <\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><em><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The journey of the Wise Men, fulfilling their divine calling:\nTo explore for the coming of Messiah, to seek out new life, and a divine civilization&#8230;.\u00a0 <\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><em><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">To boldly go where no saint has gone before!<\/span> <\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/div><\/div>\n<p>Regardless of the questions regarding the identity of the Wise Men, or, or of how many there were, or of when they arrived, clearly they were people on a mission.\u00a0 They endured hardships (even been on a camel?) and spent a lot of time traveling to Bethlehem just to see this Baby.\u00a0 There must have something very special going on.\u00a0 They must have had a thirst and deep passion to find this Baby and make a connection with God.<\/p>\n<p>As we consider this passage and the journey of the Wise Men, we can make the following three observations&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\">1:\u00a0 A Sincere Search for God Always Leads to Jesus&#8230;<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>As the opening credits of Star Trek suggest, Captain Kirk and crew were always &#8220;seeking out new life and civilizations.&#8221;\u00a0 The Wise Men were seeking God, and God let them directly to Jesus.\u00a0 We too, are in a constant mode of seeking God.\u00a0 And when we diligently seek God, we&#8217;ll soon discover the truth of John 14:6 where Jesus said,\u00a0 &#8220;I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.<br \/>\nIn Acts 17, Paul arrives in Athens.\u00a0 The Athenians were very religious; in fact they&#8217;d worship any god who came along.\u00a0 So they were curious in what Paul had to say about this &#8220;new god.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">22-23\u00a0 Paul then stood up in the meeting of the Areopagus and said: &#8220;Men of Athens! I see that in every way you are very religious. \u00a0 For as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: TO AN UNKNOWN GOD. Now what you worship as something unknown I am going to proclaim to you.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Athenians were open to any god that came along; they even wanted to keep their bases covered just in case they missed a god, so they set up an altar to an &#8220;unknown god.&#8221;\u00a0 Even though they didn&#8217;t know the true God, they were looking for Him.<\/p>\n<p>So Paul answered their search by telling them about Jesus. &#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">29-31 \u00a0 &#8220;Therefore since we are God&#8217;s offspring, we should not think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone \u2014 an image made by man&#8217;s design and skill. \u00a0 In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent. \u00a0\u00a0 For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to all men by raising him from the dead.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>To Paul, Jesus was central to the search for this &#8220;unknown God.&#8221;\u00a0 A search for God will always lead you to Jesus.<\/p>\n<p>Searching for God takes a sense of shared vision and purpose.\u00a0 You need diligence.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=luke+15%3A8-31&amp;version=TLB\" target=\"_blank\">Luke 15<\/a> tells us the parable of a widow who searched her house high and low for a missing coin.\u00a0 The Wise Men&#8217;s diligence should serve as an example to us.\u00a0 Just sitting around and talking isn&#8217;t enough.\u00a0 The French author Antoine de Saint-Exupery wrote: &#8220;Love does not consist in gazing at each other, but in looking outward together in the same direction.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The wise men stuck\u00a0 it out. They rode the camel; many miles.\u00a0 They looked outward focusing on the star.\u00a0 They didn&#8217;t waver.<\/p>\n<p>And they were prepared!\u00a0 Even though they were Gentiles from the East, God had planted seeds which would lead them to Jesus.\u00a0 Could it be that God allowed the exile\u00a0 to Babylon and Persia, in part, to allow the Jewish people to take the message about God to the fore-bearers of these Wise Men?<\/p>\n<p>If we follow God&#8217;s\u00a0 star, WE will find Him.\u00a0 If we continue to lock arms in worship and service&#8230; if we\u00a0 journey together in our collective faith following His star, we\u00a0 will accomplish what God intends.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\">2: Once Found, You Give God Your Best&#8230;<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>One of the highlights on any Star Trek mission was to provide any kind of help and humanitarian aid they could.\u00a0 They gave the best of food, medicine, shelter, education, and wisdom they could.\u00a0 One of the most enjoyable things about Christmas is giving gifts to others.\u00a0 YES, it is nice to receive, but the real blessing is the joy of giving the best to others.\u00a0 The Wise Men understood this.<\/p>\n<p>Give the best&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Many of our gift giving these days is really &#8220;Exchanging&#8221; instead of &#8220;Giving.&#8221;\u00a0 Can you forgive someone who doesn&#8217;t want to be forgiven?\u00a0 Jesus did (take a look at Luke 23:34&#8230; &#8220;Father forgive them for they know not what they do.&#8221;)\u00a0 Jesus didn&#8217;t say, &#8220;Hey, those people don&#8217;t deserve forgiveness; they don&#8217;t even want forgiveness.&#8221;\u00a0 But don&#8217;t we do that with gifts?\u00a0 Have we lost the spirit of truly giving without expecting to receive?<\/li>\n<li>Real gifts are motivated by love.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s what God did- while we were still sinners and had no desire of forgiveness&#8230; &#8220;For God so loved the world that&#8230; He GAVE.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class='et-box et-info'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800080; font-size: 14pt;\">The phrase &#8220;Gift Exchange&#8221; is an oxymoron.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800080; font-size: 14pt;\">The phrase &#8220;Love Gift&#8221; is redundant!<\/span><\/strong><\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<p>As Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 13:7, Love ALWAYS gives.\u00a0 You can give without loving, but you can&#8217;t love without giving.<\/p>\n<p>The Wise Men knew what they were giving.\u00a0 These three gifts were not accidental; their gifts teach us about Jesus:<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-container et_sliderfx_fade et_sliderauto_false et_sliderauto_speed_5000 et_slidertype_top_tabs'>\n\t\t\t\t<ul class='et-tabs-control'>\n\t\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tGold\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tFrankincense\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tMyrrh\n\t\t<\/a><\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul> <!-- .et-tabs-control --> \n\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content'>\n\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-main-wrap'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-wrapper'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tFit for a King\n\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tUsed by Priests. Jesus is our High Priest.\n\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tUsed to embalm the dead. Might have been what the women were taking to the tomb on that first Easter Morning&#8230;\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div> <!-- .et-tabs-container -->\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\">3: Once You&#8217;ve Encountered Jesus, You Can&#8217;t Walk the Same Path&#8230;<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>In the Star Trek episodes, note that when Captain Kirk leaves a planet or some far out galaxy, the Enterprise does not follow the same path or course that they took to arrive.<\/p>\n<p>To Quote Captain Kirk in the final scene of Star Trek VI, he plots a new course by saying:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #993366; font-size: 14pt;\">Second star to the right, and straight on till morning.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>What are you looking at to navigate?\u00a0 There are\u00a0a lot of &#8220;stars&#8221; we can follow. But once we&#8217;ve encountered Jesus, we&#8217;ll look for a reset\u00a0in our GPS.\u00a0 \u00a0In Matthew\u00a0 2:12 God warned the magi in a dream to go home a different way.\u00a0 Not only did they return by a different route, but they also went back home as different men.\u00a0 When you encounter Jesus Christ, when you recognize who He is, when you embrace Him and allow Him to embrace you&#8230; You&#8217;ll never be the same again!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Will this worship experience this morning empower you to walk a different path as a believer?<\/li>\n<li>Consider the words of Paul in 1 Corinthians 5:17&#8230; &#8220;<strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If anyone is in Christ he is a new creation; the old has gone, and new has come<\/span><\/strong>.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class='et-box et-shadow'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><p>Two men were seated next to each other on the commercial plane.\u00a0 After breezing through the on-flight magazine, the first man turned to the other and asked, &#8220;so what kind of work do you do?&#8221;\u00a0 The other man replied, &#8220;I am a pastor of a church.&#8221;\u00a0 &#8220;Oh,&#8221; said the first man quickly.\u00a0 &#8220;I don&#8217;t believe in this religious stuff.\u00a0 It&#8217;s for kids, you know.&#8221; \u00a0He then mockingly sang, &#8220;Jesus loves me this I know, for the Bible tells me so&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The minister laughed politely, and asked the other man what he did for a living.\u00a0 &#8220;I am an astronomer,&#8221; said the first man.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Oh, that stuff,&#8221; said the minister.\u00a0 &#8220;I thought it was just for kids, you know- Twinkle, twinkle little star&#8230;&#8221;<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">What&#8217;s a Star???<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>We&#8217;re all fascinated by stars and by the vastness of space.\u00a0 But Jesus&#8230;\u00a0 The world and all of the stars were created through Him.\u00a0 The Son of the living God!\u00a0 Shouldn&#8217;t we be more excited about Him?\u00a0 Shouldn&#8217;t we be lost in the wonder of His gift of love and forgiveness?\u00a0 Like the Wise Men, shouldn&#8217;t we be committed to following His star?<\/p>\n<p>What about your stardate?\u00a0 Are you wishing and searching for something like the Wise Men?\u00a0 You may call it searching for ultimate truth, or searching for purpose or meaning in life, or searching for happiness or peace, or you may not know what you&#8217;re searching for.\u00a0 But if you search diligently for God, there WILL be a star that leads you to Jesus.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p>The saying is true, &#8220;Wise men still seek Him.&#8221;\u00a0 But the Wise Men weren&#8217;t wise because they were seeking Jesus.\u00a0 We call them wise today because they FOUND Jesus and they determined to follow Jesus (Matthew 2:11).<\/p>\n<p>If you are a Christian, you may be thinking, &#8220;<em><span style=\"color: #339966;\">That&#8217;s great!\u00a0 I hope someone reading this is guided to Jesus, but what truth is there for me in this passage?\u00a0 I&#8217;ve already met Jesus, bowed before Him, and given Him my worship.<\/span><\/em>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the application:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #993366;\">God wants to use YOU as His star!<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Who do you know in your Universe who needs to be guided to Jesus?\u00a0 The Bible says, &#8220;and those who lead many to righteousness will shine like the stars for ever and ever&#8221;
