You know they are true, for you know that you can trust those of us who have taught you. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">15 You know how, when you were a small child, you were taught the holy Scriptures; and it is these that make you wise to accept God\u2019s salvation by trusting in Christ Jesus. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">16 The whole Bible was given to us by inspiration from God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives; it straightens us out and helps us do what is right. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">17 It is God\u2019s way of making us well prepared at every point, fully equipped to do good to everyone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>TLB<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">When All Else Fails&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Have you ever had one of those experiences of &#8220;some assembly required&#8221; where you tossed the instructions aside, got out your screw driver, and started putting it together the way you thought it should go?\u00a0 Sometimes, it doesn&#8217;t turn out very well.\u00a0 Sometimes, it&#8217;s better if you do throw out the instructions, but that&#8217;s only because those instructions are flawed.<\/p>\n<p>What about the instructions that God gives us for this project we call &#8220;life&#8221;?\u00a0 We call the instruction booklet the Bible.\u00a0 Can you count on it?<\/p>\n<p>Just like the constant pregame and post game shows, everyone has an opinion.\u00a0 The world is saturated with opinions.\u00a0 Self appointed experts abound.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">What objective source do YOU use to govern your life?<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class='et-box et-warning'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000; font-size: 12pt;\">DANGER!!!<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you ever hear anyone saying the following, watch out!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">&#8220;Well, I know what the Bible says, but I believe&#8230;&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Biblical Illiteracy<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_Lindbeck\" target=\"_blank\">George Linbeck<\/a>, the noted scholar from Yale said that the &#8220;greatest challenge for us is Biblical Illiteracy.&#8221;\u00a0 Check\u00a0 out Pastor Jim&#8217;s sermon on &#8220;<a title=\"Time to Dust Off the Bible (7\/20\/14)\" href=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/?p=2640\">Time to dust off the Bible<\/a>.&#8221;\u00a0 Do you really know what is and isn&#8217;t in the Bible?\u00a0 But\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1+Peter+3%3A15&amp;version=TLB\" target=\"_blank\">1 Peter 3:15<\/a>\u00a0 tells us that we need to be able to explain our faith.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\">Why do you go to church on Sunday?<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Could you answer this?\u00a0 Would you be able to explain in terms of the truth in the Bible?\u00a0 We can&#8217;t do anything of eternal value apart from prayer and the Word of God.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Clark_Pinnock\" target=\"_blank\">Clark Pinnock<\/a> said, &#8220;Modern theology of almost every shade is in crisis.\u00a0 While there is no lack of religious <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vocabulary.com\/dictionary\/fibrosity\" target=\"_blank\">fibrosity<\/a>, a sure word resonate with divine authority is scarcely to be heard.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In other words, there&#8217;s a lot of stuff about religion out there.\u00a0 But most of it is fluff and opinion, and people are comfortable with that.\u00a0 Nobody want&#8217;s to hear &#8220;Thus Saith the Lord.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What&#8217;s really needed is something that&#8217;s consistent with the true will\u00a0 of God.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=amos+8%3A11&amp;version=TLB\" target=\"_blank\">Amos 8:11<\/a>&#8211;\u00a0 says that there will be a &#8220;famine&#8221; of hearing the Word of the Lord.\u00a0 It seems that our world is in the midst of that famine now.\u00a0 Throughout history, there have been many attempts to squash the Bible.\u00a0 But yet, the Bible has survived and still speaks to us today.\u00a0 God has decided that this is How He wants to communicate with us.<\/p>\n<p>The Bible still stands as life&#8217;s instructions.\u00a0 Our challenge\u00a0 is to read them and follow them.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Stand Strong in the Word<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>OK.\u00a0 So other than reading the Bible consistently to get some head knowledge about it, how can studying the Bible change our lives?\u00a0 Why is this book different from any other &#8220;self-help&#8221; book?\u00a0 Is it really &#8220;God&#8217;s Word&#8221;?\u00a0 Is it really better to follow these instructions or to just go &#8220;build that bookshelf &#8220;without the assembly instructions?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Study the Truth&#8230;<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>We hold a lot of meetings and try to do things on our own. Leonard Sweeten said that &#8220;once we open the scriptures the windows of heaven open and we become drenched in showers of blessing and downpours of strength.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Timothy was going through some rough times.\u00a0 He was surrounded by people who &#8220;knew a better way.&#8221;\u00a0 And so Paul was telling him to stay true to the word of God.\u00a0 Bring your Bible to meetings!\u00a0 Don&#8217;t just listen to some &#8220;bald guy&#8217;s opinion&#8221;- stay close to the Word of God.\u00a0 People out there are trying to deceive you and we don&#8217;t even realize it because we don&#8217;t know the Word.<\/p>\n<p>FBI agents train\u00a0 for recognizing counterfeit dollars by studying the real thing.\u00a0 They never look at counterfeits; they just study all of the details in a real bill.\u00a0 But once they see a counterfeit bill they can spot it because they&#8217;re so used to the real thing.\u00a0 We need to be saturated and immersed in the Word.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Bible Contains God&#8217;s True Mission Statement&#8230;<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>God is the definition of Truth.\u00a0 God is the standard we need to know.\u00a0 We&#8217;re surrounded by deception and &#8220;counterfeit bills&#8221;, so we need to know the real deal in order to avoid the pitfalls of lies.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=john+14%3A1-6&amp;version=TLB\" target=\"_blank\">John 14:6<\/a> \u00a0 \u00a0 Jesus is the TRUTH<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1+John+5%3A6&amp;version=TLB\" target=\"_blank\">1 John 5:6<\/a> \u00a0\u00a0 The Holy Spirit is forever TRUTHFUL<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So where do we go?\u00a0 What are our marching orders as a church?\u00a0 What&#8217;s our mission statement?\u00a0 Instead of taking surveys or holding endless meetings, all we need to do is to turn to the Bible.\u00a0 To bring our mission down to it&#8217;s essence, take a look at \u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1+John+5%3A10-13&amp;version=TLB\" target=\"_blank\">1 John 5:10-13 <\/a>.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s what verses 11-12 say:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span id=\"en-TLB-27618\" class=\"text 1John-5-11\">And what is it that God has said? That he has given us eternal life and that this life is in his Son.\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"en-TLB-27619\" class=\"text 1John-5-12\"><sup class=\"versenum\">\u00a0 <\/sup>So whoever has God\u2019s Son has life; whoever does not have his Son, does not have life.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>We should never have a conversation or take a committee vote on the question of\u00a0 &#8220;should our church go out and tell people about Jesus&#8221;?\u00a0 God&#8217;s already decided that we are to share the Gospel.<\/p>\n<p>Bishop <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mack_B._Stokes\" target=\"_blank\">Mack Stokes<\/a> said &#8220;we read the Bible prayerfully because we want to know God&#8217;s will and purpose for our life.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Train Up a Child&#8230;<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The Bible is to used as a guide; not a weapon.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a roadmap to finding God&#8217;s will; not a list of does and don&#8217;ts.\u00a0 We need to plant seeds in our children and youth.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Proverbs+22%3A6+&amp;version=TLB\" target=\"_blank\">Proverbs 22:6 <\/a>tells us to &#8220;<span id=\"en-TLB-14744\" class=\"text Prov-22-6\">Teach a child to choose the right path, and when he is older, he will remain upon it.<\/span>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Take a look at the familiar story of the Prodigal son.\u00a0 In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=luke+15%3A11-17&amp;version=TLB\" target=\"_blank\">Luke 15:17<\/a>\u00a0 the son &#8220;came to his senses&#8221; and turned back to his father and to God.\u00a0 Like that father, we need to be planting seeds in the hearts of our young.\u00a0 Paul is telling Timothy to stand strong to stand against the temptations.\u00a0 Forge ahead and continue to plant seeds of truth.<\/p>\n<p>Even Jesus had to learn the scriptures, just like you and I.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=luke+2%3A46-52&amp;version=TLB\" target=\"_blank\">Luke 2:52<\/a> tells us that\u00a0 &#8220;Jesus grew in stature and wisdom&#8230;.&#8221; as he obeyed his parents and grew up in Nazareth.\u00a0 But this knowledge came in handy when Satan tempted Him in the wilderness.\u00a0 Satan used scripture; but He misquoted it and twisted it.\u00a0 But Jesus recognized the counterfeit.\u00a0 He was able to reply to Satan with certainty &#8220;It is written&#8230;&#8221;\u00a0 He was prepared.\u00a0 Could it be that we get tripped up because we don&#8217;t know &#8220;what is written?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Alexander Rostovzev was a famous Russian actor who was playing the part of Jesus in a sacrilegious play called &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/bible.org\/illustration\/romans-1017\" target=\"_blank\">Christ in a Tuxedo.&#8221;<\/a><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">He was supposed to read two verses from the Sermon on the Mount, remove his gown, and cry out, \u201cGive me my tuxedo and top hat!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But as he read the words, \u201cBlessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted,\u201d he began to tremble. Instead of following the script, he kept reading from<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=matthew+5&amp;version=TLB\" target=\"_blank\">Matthew 5<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, ignoring the coughs, calls, and foot-stamping of his fellow actors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Finally, recalling a verse he had learned in his childhood in a Russian Orthodox church, he cried, \u201cLord, remember me when Thou comest into Thy kingdom!\u201d<\/span> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=luke+23%3A38-42&amp;version=TLB\" target=\"_blank\">Luke 23:42<\/a>)<span style=\"color: #000000;\">. Before the curtain could be lowered, Rostovzev had trusted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Conviction and conversion came just from reading the scriptures.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">The Bible: True and Trustworthy<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Unique&#8230;<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The Bible wasn&#8217;t written by a bunch of wise men who wanted to create a religion.\u00a0 It was written over a 1500 year period.\u00a0 God put it together.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a unique book, set apart.\u00a0 Written in many different countries and literary styles.\u00a0 But God put it together.<\/p>\n<p>The Bible is consistent.\u00a0 It keeps telling us about an almighty righteous God who wants our complete devotion.\u00a0 He can&#8217;t tolerate sin and yet He loves us so much that He provided a means for us to receive forgiveness.<\/p>\n<p>Pastor\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wacriswell.org\/index.cfm\/FuseAction\/Home.Home.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">W.A. Criswell<\/a> speaks of a&#8221;Scarlet Thread&#8221; tying all of the Bible together&#8230;<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-info'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cDid you know that a scarlet thread winds its way throughout the entire Bible? Skeptics and scoffers may fire their arrows at the validity and historicity of Scriptures, but believers throughout the centuries have seen this line of crimson weaving through every book of God\u2019s holy Word. but if not, keep it.&#8221; So they paid me <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">thirty pieces of silver<\/span>.\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong>Isaiah 50:6 \u00a0\u00a0<\/strong> I offered my back to those who beat me,\nmy cheeks to those who <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">pulled out my beard<\/span>;\nI did not hide my face\nfrom mocking and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">spitting<\/span>.\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong>Zechariah 11:13<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 And the Lord said to me, &#8220;Throw it to the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">potter<\/span>&#8220;-the handsome price at which they priced me! So I took the thirty pieces of silver and threw them into the house of the Lord to the potter.\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong>Isaiah 53:7\u00a0<\/strong> He was oppressed and afflicted,\nyet he did not open his mouth;\nhe was led like a lamb to the slaughter,\nand as a sheep before her shearers is <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">silent<\/span>,\nso he did not open his mouth.\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong>Isaiah 53:12\u00a0<\/strong> Therefore I will give him a portion among the great,\nand he will divide the spoils with the strong,\nbecause he poured out his life unto death,\nand was <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">numbered with the transgressors<\/span>.\nFor he bore the sin of many,\nand made intercession for the transgressors.\u00a0\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong>Psalm 22:18\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 They divide my garments among them\nand <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">cast lots<\/span> for my clothing.\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong>Zechariah 12:10<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 &#8220;And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They will look on me, the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">one they have pierced<\/span>, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son.\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong>Psalm 34:20<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 He protects all his <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">bones<\/span>,\u00a0 not one of them will be broken.\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong>Psalm 16:10<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 because you will not abandon me to the grave,\u00a0 nor will you let your Holy One see <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">decay<\/span>.\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong>Isaiah 53:9<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 He was assigned a grave with the wicked,\nand <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">with the rich in his death<\/span>,\nthough he had done no violence,\nnor was any deceit in his mouth.\u00a0\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong>Amos 8:9<\/strong>\u00a0 \u00a0 &#8220;In that day,&#8221; declares the Sovereign Lord,<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I will make the sun go down at noon\nand <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">darken the earth in broad daylight<\/span>.\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div> <!-- .et-tabs-container -->\n<p>Just 17 examples.\u00a0 For just 8 of these happening exactly as stated,<br \/>\nthe odds are 1 out of 480 x 10<sup>30<\/sup>.\u00a0 God&#8217;s hand is involved.\u00a0 The Bible can be absolutely trusted.<\/p>\n<p>What do we use as the objective source in our lives?\u00a0 If we live by our opinions, or laws, or fads, we&#8217;ll be lost.\u00a0 And yet, how many of us really study it and live by it?\u00a0 Don&#8217;t wait until New Years to commit to reading the Bible.\u00a0 Let it become part of who you are.\u00a0 In all we do; even in ministry team meetings.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\">God Breathed&#8230;<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The Greek word translated as &#8220;Inspired&#8221; in verse 16 of our text is Theopneustos.\u00a0 This literally means &#8220;God Breath,&#8221; a term the Bible consistently uses to identify the Holy Spirit. \u00a0 All scripture is\u00a0 &#8220;God Breathed&#8221;- this verse is telling us that the Bible really is the Word of God. \u00a0\u00a0 The Holy Spirit will help us understand and apply the Word of God to our Lives, just as the Holy Spirit inspired and protected those who wrote the books of the Bible, the scholars who copied and translated them,\u00a0 and those who assembled them into the cannon that we know as the Bible.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Leaning Piazza?\u00a0 Or Leaning Tower?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>It&#8217;s actually hard to take a picture of the Leaning Tower of Pisa.\u00a0 If you focus on the leaning tower, the tendency is to frame your picture so that the tower is straight.\u00a0 However, if you focus your attention on the surrounding buildings, you compose your picture properly.
