Kwak&#8217;s grandmother was 87 years old and well past those years where she could organize covered dish dinners and attend meetings.\u00a0 But one day she called her granddaughter in and asked her to list EVERY member of the church that she was pastoring.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 Although she couldn&#8217;t do the things she once could, she knew that God could still use her.\u00a0 So she prayed.\u00a0 She prayed for every member of her granddaughter&#8217;s church.\u00a0 She did this even as Rev. Kwak moved from church to church.\u00a0 The pastor&#8217;s grandmother prayed for everyone in that church.<\/p>\n<p>And the prayers were answered.\u00a0 Every church that Rev. Kwak has served grew during her tenure.\u00a0 Her grandmother&#8217;s prayers were like drops of water which rippled out to touch many.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">From Granddaughter in Korea to Superintendent in America&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In 1987, Jisun Kwak left Korea and traveled to Madison New Jersey to study at <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Drew_University\" target=\"_blank\">Drew<\/a><\/span> University.\u00a0 Drew&#8217;s <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_Methodist_Seminaries\" target=\"_blank\">Theological School<\/a><\/span> is one of 13 seminaries in the United States maintained by the United Methodist Church, and it has produced 1000s of pastors serving all over the world.<\/p>\n<p>The seeds that led &#8220;Jisun&#8221; into the ministry led &#8220;Dr. Jisun Kwak&#8221; into the leadership of the church.\u00a0 After graduating, serving at many churches, and earning her doctorate, Rev.\u00a0 Kwak became the first Asian Woman to serve as a District Superintendent in the Northeast Jurisdiction of the United Methodist Church.<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-info'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The United Methodist Church in the United States is divided into regional jurisdictions. Ours is called the Northeast Jurisdiction.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Each jurisdiction is composed of several Annual Conferences (ours is called the Greater New Jersey Annual Conference).\u00a0 Each Annual Conference is presided over by a bishop (ours is Bishop John Schol).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Each Annual Conference is composed of several Districts.\u00a0 In our case, the Greater New Jersey Annual Conference consists of 9 Districts, and ours is the Delaware Bay District.\u00a0 Each District is led by a District Superintendent (Dr. Jisun Kwak, in our case).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul><\/div><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Drew&#8217;s motto is from Matthew 10:8-\u00a0 &#8220;Freely you have received, freely give.&#8221;\u00a0 This truth has been a guidepost for her life.\u00a0 We\u00a0 stand on the shoulders of others who have come before us; &#8220;The past is alive in this present moment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-info'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">&#8220;I am a part of all that we have met&#8221;<\/span> <\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This is a quote by Alfred Lord Tennyson.\u00a0 Tennyson is also known for the following famous quotes&#8230; <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;Ours not to reason why, ours but to do and die.&#8221;\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8221; &#8216;Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;A lie which is half a truth is ever the blackest of lies.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">You can read more Tennyson quotes at<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brainyquote.com\/quotes\/authors\/a\/alfred_lord_tennyson.html#zXRFdpDeH3YEj1vI.99%20\" target=\"_blank\">BrainyQuote.com<\/a>.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Seeds Planted in Seoul, South Korea&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>On a hill beside the Han River in Seoul is a cemetery which holds the remains of missionaries- mostly Americans- who came to Korea beginning in the late 1800s.\u00a0 These servants of God, led by the call to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with those who had never heard it, suffered many hardships in this far away land. Many of them died of diseases;\u00a0 some were no older than 30 years old.<\/p>\n<p>Among the graves in this cemetery (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.seoulsync.com\/culture\/traditional\/graves-expats-past-yanghwajin-foreign-missionary-cemetery\" target=\"_blank\">Yanghwajin\u00a0Foreign Missionary Cemetery<\/a><\/span>) are those of Ella and Henry <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Henry_Appenzeller\" target=\"_blank\">Appenzeller.<\/a><\/span> The Appenzellers, along with other missionaries, founded schools in Korea and opened the Bible to many young Korean men and women for the first time.\u00a0 He founded the first Methodist church in Korea.\u00a0 Rev. Apppenzeller was a graduate of Drew University.\u00a0 Drew\u00a0 published an article about Rev. Appenzeller in which they referred to the missionary as &#8220;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.drewmagazine.com\/2012\/09\/the-korean-wesley\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Korean Wesley<\/a><\/span>&#8221; (after John Wesley, the founder of Methodism).<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0&#8220;Coincidence&#8221;???\u00a0 (<em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">not with God!<\/span><\/em>)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Appenzellers arrived in Korea in 1885.\u00a0 Our church was <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a title=\"PUMC Marks its 119th Anniversary! (11\/10\/14)\" href=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/?p=4383\" target=\"_blank\">founded<\/a><\/span> in the same year!<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The missionaries founded Pai Chai Boys High School in Seoul, which was\u00a0 the\u00a0 first modern Western style school in Korea.\u00a0 The Appenzellers also established the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ewha.ac.kr\/mbs\/ewhaen\/index.jsp\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Ewha Women&#8217;s University<\/span>. <\/a><\/p>\n<p>Female children were not valued when this school was founded.\u00a0 But it is now the world&#8217;s largest women&#8217;s university, and over 170,000 women have graduated from this institution.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4439\" style=\"width: 135px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Rev-Kwak-Parents-_IMG_1015.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4439\" class=\" wp-image-4439\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Rev-Kwak-Parents-_IMG_1015.jpg\" alt=\"Kee Young Kwak  and Youngsoon Choi (Jisun's parents) \" width=\"125\" height=\"94\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Rev-Kwak-Parents-_IMG_1015.jpg 600w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Rev-Kwak-Parents-_IMG_1015-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 125px) 100vw, 125px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4439\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kee Young Kwak<br \/>and Youngsoon Choi<br \/>(Jisun&#8217;s parents)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Rev. Kwak&#8217;s mother graduated from Ewah University, and she became a Christian.\u00a0 From her influence, the entire family converted to Christianity. This Christian mother taught her daughter to share love, compassion, to work hard, and to be faithful.<\/p>\n<p>Because of this faithful mother who studied at a school in Korea, which was founded by a Pennsylvanian who graduated from Drew University, our current District Superintendent lives out these spiritual principles.\u00a0 Because &#8220;we are a part of all that we have met,&#8221; we too, can grow from her leadership.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Full Circle&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>And so, God in His providence established the following series of events and lives :<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The Methodist Church in New Jersey helps create the seminary at Drew University.<\/li>\n<li>Henry Appenzeller studies at Drew and goes into ministry in Korea, starting the Ewha University.<\/li>\n<li>Rev. Kwak&#8217;s mother attends the Ewha university, becomes a Christian, and changes the course of her family.<\/li>\n<li>Jisun Kwak, instilled with Christian values from her mother, travels to New Jersey to attend Drew University.<\/li>\n<li>Her education is funded, in part, by the United Methodist congregations in New Jersey.<\/li>\n<li>Jisun Kwak graduates from the seminary created by New Jersey Methodists.<\/li>\n<li>Dr. Kwak leads the congregations in New Jersey who helped to fund her education.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\">&#8221; We are a part of all that we have met&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">So What About Us?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Those New Jersey Methodists who came before us helped create the seminary at Drew University.\u00a0 They helped to send the Appenzellers and others to Korea in 1885.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And through our offerings and our shared giving with the Greater New Jersey Annual Conference, we help to provide scholarships to places of learning such as Drew University. Our apportionment provided a full scholarship to Rev. Kwak, just at a point where she was about to give up and return to Korea.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Our mission is to be part of this circle; to &#8220;<em><strong><span style=\"color: #003300;\">complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me \u2014 the task of testifying to the gospel of God&#8217;s grace.<\/span><\/strong><\/em>&#8220;<\/span><\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-bio'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #000000;\">On the night before her scheduled ordination interviews, Rev. Kwak was deeply humbled by the prospect of becoming a pastor and leading a congregation. She was at a low point spiritually and didn&#8217;t feel adequate to take care of herself, let alone a congregation. She was overcome with doubt and had determined to skip the interviews and give up on her ordination. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In her darkened room, she cried. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But then a friend called. She spoke of a vision she just had.
