And when they had set her in the midst, <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">4 they said to Him, &#8220;Teacher, this woman was caught in adultery, in the very act. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">5 Now Moses, in the law, commanded us that such should be stoned. But what do You say?&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">6 This they said, testing Him, that they might have something of which to accuse Him. But Jesus stooped down and wrote on the ground with His finger, as though He did not hear. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">7 So when they continued asking Him, He raised Himself up and said to them, &#8220;He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">8 And again He stooped down and wrote on the ground. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">9 Then those who heard it, being convicted by their conscience, went out one by one, beginning with the oldest even to the last. And Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">10 When Jesus had raised Himself up and saw no one but the woman, He said to her, &#8220;Woman, where are those accusers of yours? Has no one condemned you?&#8221;\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">11\u00a0 She said, &#8220;No one, Lord.&#8221; And Jesus said to her, &#8220;Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>NKJV<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Busted!\u00a0 Caught Red Handed!!!<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This woman was in trouble!\u00a0 Caught red handed in the very act of adultery, she was dragged through the crowd and thrown to the ground in front of Jesus.\u00a0 Jerusalem was packed; people were celebrating the feast of the Tabernacles. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Deuteronomy+16%3A16&amp;version=NKJV\" target=\"_blank\">Deuteronomy 16:16<\/a>).\u00a0 Humiliated, this woman was brought before Jesus by the religious leaders.\u00a0 It&#8217;s like getting caught speeding by the police, the town council, the mayor&#8230; and even by your parents.\u00a0 They were all there.\u00a0 This woman didn&#8217;t have a chance.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-info'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #000000;\">John 1:17 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>NIV<\/div><\/div>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">A Two for One Trap&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Jesus was in Jerusalem, &#8220;working the crowd&#8221; as He always did.\u00a0 He was with the people to teach them the ways of God.\u00a0 He&#8217;s minding His own business when all of the religious leaders burst in and interrupted Him with this case of adultery.<\/p>\n<p>But what they didn&#8217;t understand, is that God also commands us to confront someone else&#8217;s sin with humility:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew+7%3A3-5&amp;version=TLB\" target=\"_blank\">Matthew 7:3-5<\/a><\/span>\u00a0\u00a0 Take the plank out of your own eye first!<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1+corinthians+10%3A1-12&amp;version=TLB\" target=\"_blank\">1 Corinthians 10:12<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0 None of us are above sin.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=galatians+6%3A1-3&amp;version=TLB\" target=\"_blank\">Galatians 6:1<\/a><\/span>\u00a0\u00a0 Help the &#8220;sinner&#8221; to get back on\u00a0 the right path.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t just accuse!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=hebrews+10%3A26-31&amp;version=TLB\" target=\"_blank\">Hebrews 10:31<\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> says:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><em> &#8220;It&#8217;s a &#8220;dreadful\u00a0 thing to fall into the hands of the living God.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/author\/quotes\/6446816.F_B_Meyer?page=1\" target=\"_blank\">F.B. Myer <\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/johnstallings.blogspot.com\/2011\/10\/first-rock.html\" target=\"_blank\">wrote<\/a><\/span>:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">&#8220;It&#8217;s a terrible thing for a sinner to fall into the hands of his fellow sinners.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>These &#8220;guardians of religion&#8221; were bringing a woman who was caught in the &#8220;very act of adultery.&#8221;\u00a0 According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Deuteronomy+22%3A13-22&amp;version=TLB\" target=\"_blank\">Deuteronomy 22:22<\/a> this guilty woman must be stoned!\u00a0 She was guilty- caught red handed!<\/p>\n<p>But there were two problems with this:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Just how did they &#8220;catch her in the very act&#8221; anyway?\u00a0 This probably wasn&#8217;t done in full public.\u00a0 Somebody must have known about it or was constantly spying.\u00a0 This sounds like a set-up.\u00a0 Religiouos people might set someone up, but Godly people won&#8217;t.<\/li>\n<li>Where was the man?\u00a0 It takes two to tango!\u00a0 The Pharisees were stuck on Deuteronomy 22:21 which says that the woman should be stoned, but they somehow ignored verse 22 which says the man should be stoned too!\u00a0 Where was he?\u00a0 Maybe in the crowd, high fiving his friends knowing he did his &#8220;job&#8221; in setting up this woman for the Pharisees.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>So this setup put Jesus into a bit of a trap.\u00a0 He had two choices&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-container et_sliderfx_fade et_sliderauto_false et_sliderauto_speed_5000 et_slidertype_top_tabs'>\n\t\t\t\t<ul class='et-tabs-control'>\n\t\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tSTONE HER!\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tLET HER GO!\n\t\t<\/a><\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul> <!-- .et-tabs-control --> \n\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content'>\n\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-main-wrap'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-wrapper'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<span style=\"color: #000000;\">If He told them that she had violated the Law and told them to go ahead and stone her, He would run into the Roman Law which prohibited Jews from executing the death penalty<\/span>.\n\t\t<\/div><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<span style=\"color: #000000;\">If He simply said &#8220;you guys are a bunch of hypocritical nuts,&#8221; He would have violated the Jewish Law. The Law was clear that adultery was wrong and that sin deserved punishment.<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div> <!-- .et-tabs-container -->\n<p>The Pharisees figured that not only did they have this &#8220;evil sinful woman&#8221; cornered, they also thought that they had Jesus trapped.<\/p>\n<p>They confronted this sin with pride and self righteousness.\u00a0 The ones who should have been helping and encouraging people were being hateful and oppressive.\u00a0 They were judgmental when they should have been humble and loving.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Jesus Exposes the Pharisees&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The crowd presses on Jesus with their demand that the woman should be stoned.\u00a0 They think they have Jesus in a dilemma, but He simply stoops down and starts writing on the ground as if He didn&#8217;t hear them.\u00a0 So the big question\u00a0 is, what is He writing,\u00a0 and why did it have such an effect on them?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><em><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Two possibilities to consider:<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #800080;\">The Law Giver&#8230;<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Exodus+31%3A18&amp;version=TLB\" target=\"_blank\">Exodus 31:18<\/a> talks about how God wrote the Ten Commandments and the Law on the stone tablets. He wrote them with His finger.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">These Pharisees were trained and smart (at least when it came to the letter of the Law and the scriptures).\u00a0 They would have recognized that the Law Giver wrote the Law with His finger.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">That Jesus would claim to be the Law Giver (God) is consistent throughout the scriptures.\u00a0 In fact,\u00a0 if you jump ahead to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John+8%3A52-58&amp;version=TLB\" target=\"_blank\">John 8:58<\/a>, Jesus claims to be\u00a0 the &#8220;I AM&#8221; who was before Abraham existed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #800080;\">The Wall Writer&#8230;<br \/>\n<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=daniel+5&amp;version=TLB\" target=\"_blank\">Daniel 5<\/a> tells of the vision that King Bellshazzar had of a finger writing some words on the wall.\u00a0 A finger appeared and wrote four words:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Writing-on-the-Wall-_063.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-4265\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Writing-on-the-Wall-_063-230x300.jpg\" alt=\"Writing on the Wall _063\" width=\"230\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Writing-on-the-Wall-_063-230x300.jpg 230w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Writing-on-the-Wall-_063.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 230px) 100vw, 230px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; color: #000080;\"><em>Mene<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; color: #000080;\"><em>Mene<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; color: #000080;\"><em>Tekel<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; color: #000080;\"><em>Upharsin (or Parsin)<br \/>\n<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You have been found in the scales of justice and you have been found in need.\u00a0 In your mind, the law says one thing.\u00a0 But in the eyes of My Law, you&#8217;re in big, big trouble.<\/p>\n<p>They know that they&#8217;re guilty.\u00a0 So one by one, the rocks begin to drop.\u00a0 We also should realize that we are &#8220;found wanting.&#8221;\u00a0 All of us are guilty before God; we have no defense.\u00a0 All we can do is to drop the rocks and leave in humility.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In verse 7, Jesus says &#8220;let he who is WITHOUT SIN cast the first stone.&#8221; The Greek word translated as &#8220;without sin&#8221; is anamartetos. This literally means NO sin. No room for &#8220;white lies.&#8221; No room for &#8220;the Devil made me do it.&#8221; No room for &#8220;everybody does that.&#8221; The word doesn&#8217;t even allow for evil thoughts. If you&#8217;re driving on Route 55 and somebody weaves in between you and the car in front of you, chances are you&#8217;re pretty far away from anamartetos.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">A Clean Slate!<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>So the accusers all walk away.\u00a0 When she sees what has happened, she picks herself off the ground where she had been thrown and stands up.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus knows that this woman is not without sin.\u00a0 And yet He gets up, looks her in the eye, and and tells her that nobody is condemning her.\u00a0 For the first time in her life, somebody recognizes her value and gives her dignity.\u00a0 And this from the Son of God.\u00a0 He recognizes the sin; all of the impure thoughts and deeds this person has done.\u00a0 And yet He restores her.\u00a0 He allows her to stand up.<\/p>\n<p>And this woman- once worthless- is having a salvation moment.\u00a0 She stands before Jesus and recognizes Him as Lord.\u00a0 She simply gives a statement of faith.<\/p>\n<p>In this act we see the words of Paul in action:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=romans+8&amp;version=TLB\" target=\"_blank\">Romans 8:1<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0 &#8220;There is no condemnation for those in Christ.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=romans+5%3A6-10&amp;version=TLB\" target=\"_blank\">Romans 5:8<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0 &#8220;While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If Jesus didn&#8217;t love this woman, what would have happened to her?<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-info'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A girl wanted to show her favorite doll to a visitor. Her mother was embarrassed when she pulled out a raggedy looking doll; dirty, eye missing, feet twisted. The guest asked the girl, why is this your favorite doll?
