And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off \u2014 for all whom the Lord our God will call.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">40 With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, &#8220;Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">42 They devoted themselves to the apostles&#8217; teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">43 Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">45 Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.<\/span> NIV<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">\u00a0What is Fellowship?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&#8220;Fellowship&#8221; is a general all-purpose &#8220;churchy&#8221; word that gets thrown around a lot.\u00a0 But what does it mean?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When the Seniors group takes a trip to an air museum&#8230; is that fellowship?<\/li>\n<li>When the Men&#8217;s group goes bowling&#8230;\u00a0 is that fellowship?<\/li>\n<li>When the Youth Group eats pizza during an overnight lock in&#8230; is that fellowship?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">\u00a0Koinonia&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In verse 42, it says that they devoted themselves to &#8220;fellowship.&#8221;\u00a0 The Greek word translated as &#8220;fellowship&#8221; in this verse is Koinonia.\u00a0 Koinonia is used in several different ways throughout the New Testament.\u00a0 Click the tabs below to take a look&#8230;\n\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-container et_sliderfx_fade et_sliderauto_false et_sliderauto_speed_5000 et_slidertype_top_tabs'>\n\t\t\t\t<ul class='et-tabs-control'>\n\t\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tSHARE\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tCONTRIBUTE\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tPARTICIPATE\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tCOMMUNICATE\n\t\t<\/a><\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul> <!-- .et-tabs-control --> \n\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content'>\n\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-main-wrap'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-wrapper'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=hebrews+13%3A1-16&amp;version=NRSV\" target=\"_blank\">Hebrews 13:16<\/a> says:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And do not forget to do good and to <strong>share<\/strong> with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.<\/span>\nNIV<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Koinonia (fellowship), means to share what you have.\u00a0 It&#8217;s on loan to you from God, so don&#8217;t get caught up on what&#8217;s &#8220;Yours&#8221; and not &#8220;Yours.&#8221;\u00a0 Share your possessions.<\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tPaul uses Koinonia in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=romans+15%3A23-29&amp;version=NRSV\" target=\"_blank\">Romans 15:26<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For Macedonia and Achaia were pleased to make a <strong>contribution<\/strong> for the poor among the saints in Jerusalem.<\/span>\nNIV<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Koinonia (fellowship) also means to &#8220;contribute&#8221; or &#8220;to give&#8221; your resources to be used in ministry.\u00a0 So when we pass the offering plate, that too is an act of fellowship.<\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tCheck out how Koinonia is used in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1+cor+10%3A14-17&amp;version=NRSV\" target=\"_blank\">1 Corinthians 10:16<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Is not the cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks a <strong>participation<\/strong> in the blood of Christ? And is not the bread that we break a <strong>participation<\/strong> in the body of Christ?<\/span>\nNIV<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In Holy Communion (the Lord&#8217;s Supper), Koinonia means to &#8220;Participate&#8221; in the work of the blood and body of Christ.\u00a0 We are called to &#8220;Participate&#8221; in God&#8217;s works of grace.<\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n<p>\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tHere&#8217;s another shade of meaning in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=philemon+4-7&amp;version=NRSV\" target=\"_blank\">Philemon verse 6<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I pray that you may be active in <strong>sharing<\/strong> your faith, so that you will have a full understanding of every good thing we have in Christ.<\/span>\nNIV<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Talking to others about our faith is another form of fellowship.<\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div> <!-- .et-tabs-container --><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">The Fellowship of Believers&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>When Christians gather together, what turns &#8220;common interests&#8221; into &#8220;Christian Fellowship&#8221;?\u00a0 What are the things that people within the &#8220;Fellowship of Believers&#8221; should be sharing?\u00a0 What does the Fellowship of Believers have in common?<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-warning'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If you read this passage, you&#8217;ll see many things that Christians share in common. But, we&#8217;ll just pick out seven of them&#8230;<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">1:\u00a0 The Fellowship of Believers Shares in:\u00a0 BROKENESS<\/span><\/h3>\n<div class='et-box et-shadow'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #800000;\"> 37\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Now when they heard this, they were <strong>cut to the heart<\/strong> and said to Peter and to the other apostles, \u201cBrothers, what should we do?\u201d<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n<p>The first verse of our scripture passage says &#8220;they were cut to the heart.&#8221;\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 Peter had just told them the the Messiah had to die at the hands of sinful man&#8230; and that THEY were the &#8220;sinful men&#8221; who crucified Jesus!<\/p>\n<p>How could that be?\u00a0 They weren&#8217;t even there when Jesus was crucified.\u00a0 How could they be responsible?<\/p>\n<p>How could WE be responsible?<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-info'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Mark 12:28-31 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, &#8220;Of all the commandments, which is the most important?&#8221;\u00a0 &#8220;The most important one,&#8221; answered Jesus, &#8220;is this: &#8216;Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.\u00a0 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.&#8217;\u00a0 The second is this: &#8216;Love your neighbor as yourself.&#8217; There is no commandment greater than these.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0 NIV<\/div><\/div>\n<p>If you&#8217;re really honest with yourself, do you really really love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind and with all your strength?\u00a0 There&#8217;s got to be some area that we keep to ourselves.\u00a0 And if that&#8217;s not bad enough, Jesus says we need to &#8220;love our neighbor as ourselves.&#8221; What do you think of that neighbor with the barking dog?\u00a0 What about the guy who ran a stop sign in front of you?\u00a0 Love???<\/p>\n<p>When you&#8217;re honest with yourself, you realize that you keep falling short.\u00a0 You can&#8217;t even hit the #1 thing that God wants you to do.\u00a0 When you come face to face with that and with the fact that Jesus came to die for sinners like us, you&#8217;re &#8220;cut to the heart.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In the fellowship of believers, we share a sense of being &#8220;cut to the heart.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">2:\u00a0 The Fellowship of Believers Shares in: a Desire to REPENT<\/span><\/h3>\n<div class='et-box et-shadow'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span id=\"en-NRSV-26977\" class=\"text Acts-2-38\">38\u00a0\u00a0 Peter said to them, \u201c<strong>Repent<\/strong>, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ so that your sins may be forgiven; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.\u00a0 <\/span> <\/span><\/div><\/div>\n<p>But we don&#8217;t want to continue to keep doing things that &#8220;cut us to the heart.&#8221;\u00a0 Peter tells us that the solution to the &#8220;cut&#8221; is to repent.\u00a0 &#8220;Repent&#8221; is kind of a &#8220;churchy&#8221; word.\u00a0 It simply means, do something different!\u00a0 If you&#8217;re stuck in a bad (&#8220;sinful&#8221;) habit, resolve to do a 180, turn around, and go in the opposite direction.<\/p>\n<p>Not that it&#8217;s all easy.\u00a0 Look at what Hebrews 12 verses 1-3 says:<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-info'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.\u00a0 Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.\u00a0 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.<\/span> NIV<\/div><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;Run the Race&#8221;&#8230; &#8220;Throw off things that entangle&#8221;&#8230; &#8220;Fix our eyes on Jesus&#8221;&#8230; None of this is easy, especially if you&#8217;re on your own.<\/p>\n<p>When you&#8217;re in the Fellowship of Believers, you&#8217;re surrounded by others who want to &#8220;run the race&#8221; and &#8220;repent&#8221; too.\u00a0 Because the Fellowship of Believers shares in a desire to Repent, they can help each other on to a new path (and to stay headed in the right direction).<\/p>\n<p>Check out these verses:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hebrews 10:23-25<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.\u00a0 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds.\u00a0 Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another \u2014 and all the more as you see the Day approaching.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Proverbs 27:17<br \/>\nAs iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.<\/span><br \/>\nNIV<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In the Fellowship of Believers, we share in an intense desire to &#8220;be sharpened&#8221;, to grow closer to God.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">3: The Fellowship of Believers Shares in: a NEW IDENTITY<\/span><\/h3>\n<div class='et-box et-shadow'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span id=\"en-NRSV-26977\" class=\"text Acts-2-38\">38\u00a0\u00a0 Peter said to them, \u201cRepent, <strong>and be baptized<\/strong> every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ so that your sins may be forgiven; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.\u00a0 <\/span> <\/span><\/div><\/div>\n<p>Peter didn&#8217;t only tell them to repent.\u00a0 He told them to repent and be baptized in the Name of Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><em>So, what&#8217;s that mean?\u00a0 Your life gets a complete makeover as soon as some &#8220;holy water&#8221; hits your head???<\/em><\/span><\/h5>\n<p>No.\u00a0 The symbol of baptism by itself doesn&#8217;t do anything to clean up your life.\u00a0 Baptism isn&#8217;t just a ceremony with water.\u00a0 What Peter is saying is the same thing that Jesus told Nicodemus in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=john+3&amp;version=NRSV\" target=\"_blank\">John chapter 3<\/a>&#8230;<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-warning'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'>John 3:1-8<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a member of the Jewish ruling council.\u00a0 He came to Jesus at night and said, &#8220;Rabbi, we know you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs you are doing if God were not with him.&#8221;\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In reply Jesus declared, &#8220;I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.&#8221;\u00a0 &#8220;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">How can a man be born when he is old?&#8221; Nicodemus asked. &#8220;Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother&#8217;s womb to be born!&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Jesus answered, &#8220;I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.\u00a0 You should not be surprised at my saying, &#8216;You must be born again.&#8217;<\/span> NIV<\/div><\/div>\n<p>When we&#8217;re born in a hospital- &#8220;born of the flesh&#8221;-\u00a0 we get a human identity.\u00a0 It just comes along with the nose, mouth, and lungs.\u00a0 Human identity.\u00a0 But we don&#8217;t have a &#8220;Spiritual Identity.&#8221;\u00a0 To move away from sin and move closer to the ways of God, we need to have the Spirit of God (the Holy Spirit).\u00a0 We get this by being identified with Jesus.<\/p>\n<p>Take a look at these verses from the letter to the Galatians:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Gal 3:26-29<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus,\u00a0 for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.\u00a0 There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. \u00a0 If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham&#8217;s seed, and heirs according to the promise. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Gal 2:20<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. I needed to be reminded of Your power and Your awesome love and grace.<\/span><\/em>&#8220;<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>You can&#8217;t get this question right unless the Spirit of God is pulsing through your inner being.\u00a0 In the Fellowship of Believers, we share in having Spiritual Eyes which always direct us towards God.<\/p>\n<p>When you&#8217;ve got something better than pizza and football to talk about, you can move closer to that goal of &#8220;loving the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">5:\u00a0 The Fellowship of Believers Shares in: GOD&#8217;S WORD<\/span><\/h3>\n<div class='et-box et-shadow'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span id=\"en-NRSV-26981\" class=\"text Acts-2-42\">42\u00a0\u00a0 They devoted themselves to the <strong>apostles\u2019 teaching<\/strong> and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n<p>When you&#8217;re in the Fellowship of Believers, you&#8217;re surrounded by people who want to know more about God.\u00a0 And one of the ways we learn more about God is to learn more about the Bible- God&#8217;s Word- and to see how it applies to our lives.<\/p>\n<p>But that&#8217;s easier said than done.\u00a0 There are passages of scripture that are hard to understand. So being around a group of Bible hungry friends helps us to figure out the difficult parts.\u00a0 And, having a trained pastor in our midst is a big help too!<\/p>\n<p>But there are also times when we need encouragement to continue to study the Bible or to read devotions or other Bible-based publications.\u00a0 Being in a group that shares in a hunger for God&#8217;s Word helps you to &#8220;continue steadfastly&#8221; to remain in your study.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">6:\u00a0 The Fellowship of Believers Shares in: PRAYER<\/span><\/h3>\n<div class='et-box et-shadow'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span id=\"en-NRSV-26981\" class=\"text Acts-2-42\">42\u00a0\u00a0 They devoted themselves to the apostles\u2019 teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the<strong> prayers<\/strong>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n<p>They were devoted&#8230; continued steadfastly&#8230;to prayer.\u00a0 The Fellowship of Believers shares in the experience of answered prayers.\u00a0 It shares in a belief in the power of prayer.\u00a0 And so when you get together in church or in a small group, we pray for each other and we talk about how our prayers were answered.<\/p>\n<p>Absent this fellowship in prayer, corporate prayer is not as meaningful.\u00a0 But when there is fellowship, the Lord is among us.\u00a0 Remember what Jesus said in Matthew 18:19-20&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;Again, I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven.\u00a0 For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them.&#8221;<\/span><br \/>\nNIV<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">7:\u00a0 The Fellowship of Believers Shares in: an AWE OF GOD<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><div class='et-box et-shadow'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span class=\"text Acts-2-43\">43\u00a0<strong>\u00a0 Awe<\/strong> came upon everyone, because many wonders and signs were being done by the apostles. \u00a0 <\/span><span id=\"en-NRSV-26983\" class=\"text Acts-2-44\">All who believed were together and had all things in common;\u00a0 <\/span> <\/span><span id=\"en-NRSV-26984\" class=\"text Acts-2-45\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">they would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds to all, as any had need.\u00a0<\/span><\/div><\/div><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Many wonders and signs were being done among them.\u00a0 Flip back to the beginning of chapter 2 when the Holy Spirit descended and everyone was speaking in different languages.\u00a0 Look ahead to chapter 3 where Peter heals a crippled beggar.\u00a0 The people were in awe of the things that God was doing in their midst.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><em>But what about today!\u00a0 Do miracles happen today?<\/em><\/span><\/h5>\n<p>Yes!\u00a0 Within the Fellowship of Believers there are answered prayers.\u00a0 Unexplained biopsies that come back clean.\u00a0 Moments of &#8220;coincidence&#8221; where someone just happens to be in the right place at the right time.\u00a0 God IS acting in our day to day lives according to His will.\u00a0 We may not get the miracle we want, but we will get the presence of God that we need.<\/p>\n<p>The fellowship of Believers shares in these &#8220;God Sightings&#8221; or &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/?cat=53\" target=\"_blank\">God Moments<\/a>&#8220;&#8212; times where they&#8217;ve seen the Hand of God directly at work in their lives.\u00a0 The Fellowship of Believers shares in an awe of an almighty righteous God who loves us in spite of our failures.<\/p>\n<p>And because of this awe and awesome presence of God in our lives, the Fellowship of Believers shares in a desire to give and to share their possessions with others who are more needy.\u00a0 &#8220;Possessions&#8221; are gifts entrusted to us by God to be used for His glory.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">So What Do YOU Share In?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>When you&#8217;re with a group of friends, what do you talk about?\u00a0 What do you gather around?\u00a0 Maybe you discuss fishing, or sports, or movies.\u00a0 Not that there&#8217;s anything wrong with that.<\/p>\n<p>But- do you spend so much of your time and interest on these things that you don&#8217;t have any room to share in the Fellowship of Believers?\u00a0 When you get together with friends, do you share in prayer?\u00a0 Do you share any new insights that may have come to you recently when you read the Bible?\u00a0 Do you talk about any &#8220;God Sightings&#8221;
