They were terrified, <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">20 but he called out to them, &#8220;Don&#8217;t be afraid. All rights reserved.<\/h6><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Pop Quiz<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>What emotions do the words &#8220;Pop Quiz&#8221; conjure up?\u00a0 Chances are you feel things like fear, regret (I&#8217;m not prepared), pessimism (I&#8217;m going to fail!).\u00a0 Your palms start to sweat.\u00a0 Your heart starts pounding.<\/p>\n<p>But what about words such as &#8220;payment past due&#8221; or &#8220;the doctor needs to speak to you&#8221; or &#8220;error reading hard drive: Abort, Retry, Fail&#8221;? Life always throws unexpected problems at you.\u00a0 You&#8217;re never prepared.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">The Feeding of the 5000<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Before our passage,\u00a0 Jesus had just finished feeding about 25,000 people with five barley loaves and two fish.\u00a0 And even better than that, there were 12 baskets full of leftover food.\u00a0 If you&#8217;re a disciple, you&#8217;ve got to be thinking &#8220;Hey!\u00a0 Being around this Jesus guy is pretty cool!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Storm on the Sea<\/span><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_4039\" style=\"width: 193px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Sea-Galilee-Sunrise-_46-19_600w.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4039\" class=\" wp-image-4039\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Sea-Galilee-Sunrise-_46-19_600w-300x205.jpg\" alt=\"Sunrise on the Sea of Galilee\" width=\"183\" height=\"139\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4039\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sunrise on the Sea of Galilee<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Our passage in John 6 tells the story of when the disciples encountered a &#8220;pop quiz.&#8221;\u00a0 After witnessing the miracle of the feeding of the 5000, Jesus commands the disciples to get into the boat without Him.\u00a0 The disciples (experienced fishermen) head out across the lake but they run into a Pop Quiz.<\/p>\n<p>As happens frequently in that region, a storm unexpectedly dropped down on the lake.\u00a0 Because of the mountains surrounding the &#8220;sea&#8221; of Galilee (really more of a lake than a &#8220;sea&#8221;), storms and high winds can come out of nowhere and catch even experienced fishermen unaware.\u00a0 The disciples were facing gale force or even hurricane force winds.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=matthew+14%3A22-27&amp;version=TLB\" target=\"_blank\">Matthew<\/a> uses language equating this storm to an earthquake.\u00a0 It happened that suddenly; out of nowhere.\u00a0 Luke tells us that the boat was getting full of water.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4040\" style=\"width: 208px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Sea-Galilee-Fishermen-_47-12_600w.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4040\" class=\" wp-image-4040\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Sea-Galilee-Fishermen-_47-12_600w-300x202.jpg\" alt=\"Fishermen on the Sea of Galilee\" width=\"198\" height=\"133\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Sea-Galilee-Fishermen-_47-12_600w-300x202.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Sea-Galilee-Fishermen-_47-12_600w-140x94.jpg 140w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Sea-Galilee-Fishermen-_47-12_600w.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 198px) 100vw, 198px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4040\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fishermen on the Sea of Galilee<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Pop Quizzes like this bring on fear, panic, depression, even moments of self doubt. Our passage vividly describes the disciples&#8217; fear:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Verse 17 : Darkness<\/li>\n<li>Verse 18:\u00a0 Rough seas<\/li>\n<li>Verse 19:\u00a0 They were TERRIFIED!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>How do we react to these storms?\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=james1%3A2-3&amp;version=TLB\" target=\"_blank\">James 1:2-3<\/a> tells us that troubles are an opportunity for joy.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em><strong> Joy?!?<\/strong><\/em><\/span>\u00a0 How?\u00a0 The more pop quizzes the teacher gives us, the better students we become.\u00a0 We&#8217;re going to listen a little harder.\u00a0 We&#8217;re going to study a little more.\u00a0 We&#8217;re going to be better prepared.<\/p>\n<p>Testing makes you tougher.\u00a0 If you keep listening to the coach, it&#8217;s going to be OK.<\/p>\n<p>Listen to the coach.\u00a0 Listen to Jesus.\u00a0 For any of life&#8217;s quiz, Jesus is the answer.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Go for a Walk<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Why did Jesus walk on the water?\u00a0 What was He saying by doing this?\u00a0 Maybe it was something like:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">You&#8217;ve watched me feed 25000 people.\u00a0 You&#8217;ve heard my teaching.\u00a0 Now look at what I can do.\u00a0 What&#8217;s impossible for man, is possible with God.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>God has called us to do the impossible.\u00a0 He&#8217;s called us to go out into the world and make disciples!\u00a0 To go up against those who want nothing to do with God.<\/p>\n<p>God has called ordinary people- you and me.\u00a0 He&#8217;s asking us to do the impossible, but He does the impossible through us.\u00a0 Jesus is the answer.\u00a0 He&#8217;s the answer over fear.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Why Were they Frightened?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The bible says that these disciples were frightened.\u00a0 But these guys were experienced fishermen. They knew these waters.\u00a0 They&#8217;ve been through storms like this before.\u00a0 But yet, they were afraid.<\/p>\n<p>If you take a close look at the text, you&#8217;ll see that they weren&#8217;t afraid until they saw Jesus walking on the water.\u00a0 Their fear wasn&#8217;t so much in the waves and the water in the boat as it was of Jesus on the water!<\/p>\n<p>God has called us to make disciples.\u00a0 He&#8217;s given the churches instructions.<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-shadow'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Who&#8217;s stopping us from fulfilling those commands?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Us!\u00a0<\/span><\/strong> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">Our fear paralyzes us.<\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<p>Any fear they might have had about the storm or of Jesus of walking on the water, turned into AWE when they see the power of Jesus.\u00a0 Fear of God doesn&#8217;t mean to be scared of Him; it means to be in Awe of Him! \u00a0 And when Jesus gets near the boat (verse 20) He says do not fear because I Am here.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">I AM.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The original Greek says &#8220;do not fear because I Am.&#8221;\u00a0 Jesus is claiming to be God!\u00a0 Click on the following tabs and check out some other verses that identify God and Jesus as &#8220;I AM&#8221;&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-container et_sliderfx_fade et_sliderauto_false et_sliderauto_speed_5000 et_slidertype_top_tabs'>\n\t\t\t\t<ul class='et-tabs-control'>\n\t\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tI Am\n\t\t<\/a><\/li>\n\n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tTo Moses\n\t\t<\/a><\/li>\n\n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tTo the Pharisees\n\t\t<\/a><\/li>\n\n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tTo the Temple Guards\n\t\t<\/a><\/li>\n\n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tTo Paul\n\t\t<\/a><\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul> <!-- .et-tabs-control --><\/p>\n\n\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content'>\n\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-main-wrap'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-wrapper'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tThe phrase &#8220;I Am&#8221; comes from the name YHWH (pronounced &#8220;Yahweh)\u00a0 from which we get &#8220;Jehovah&#8221; or God.\u00a0 When Jesus says &#8220;I AM here,&#8221; He&#8217;s saying God&#8217;s here.\u00a0 God&#8217;s in control of this situation.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><em>Click the other tabs and check out some places where God is identified as I AM&#8230;<\/em><\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><em>In Exodus 3:13-14, when Moses stood before God, God called Himself &#8220;I AM&#8221;<\/em><\/span>:<\/p>\n<p>Moses said to God, &#8220;Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, &#8216;The God of your fathers has sent me to you,&#8217; and they ask me, &#8216;What is his name?&#8217; Then what shall I tell them?&#8221; God said to Moses, &#8220;I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: &#8216;I AM has sent me to you.'&#8221; NIV\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<em><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In John 8:58-59, here&#8217;s what Jesus said to the Jewish leaders when they challenged His authority:<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I tell you the truth,&#8221; Jesus answered, &#8220;before Abraham was born, I am!&#8221;\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<em><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Check out what it says in John 18:4-6 when the Temple Guards came to arrest Jesus&#8230;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him, went out and asked them, &#8220;Who is it you want?&#8221;\n&#8220;Jesus of Nazareth,&#8221; they replied.\n&#8220;I am he,&#8221; Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.)\nWhen Jesus said, &#8220;I am he,&#8221; they drew back and fell to the ground.\nNIV\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<em><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In Acts 18:9-11, the Lord spoke to Paul in a vision:<\/span> <\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Do not be afraid; keep on speaking, do not be silent.\nFor <span style=\"color: #000000;\">I am<\/span> with you, and no one is going to attack and harm you, because I have many people in this city.&#8221;\nNIV\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div> <!-- .et-tabs-container -->\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Their fear turns into awe when they are struck by the presence of God.\u00a0 As soon as the disciples welcome Him into their boat, they immediately arrive at their destination. Jesus didn&#8217;t stop the storm, He took the disciples out of it.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=acts+16%3A22-34&amp;version=TLB\" target=\"_blank\">Acts 16<\/a>, Paul and Silas are in a Roman prison singing praises to God.\u00a0 Jesus is the answer!\u00a0 As they sang praises, their chains fell off and the cell was filled with light.\u00a0 But then then they got up, moved forward and saved the Philippian jailer and his family.\u00a0 Impossible!<\/p>\n<p>Jesus is the answer.<\/p>\n<p>When they had Christ, they could do the impossible.\u00a0 Once Christ is welcomed in we can do the impossible.<\/p>\n<p>When we are a child of God, WE have the living Christ with us.\u00a0 WE can do the impossible!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">John Wesley&#8217;s Quiz<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>John Wesley had a terrible ministry during his only two years in the US.\u00a0 On his return trip to England, they ran into a hurricane.\u00a0 Wesley was scared and was sure he was going to die.<\/p>\n<p>But on the ship was a group of people around him; smiling, reciting the Psalms, and singing!\u00a0 They were <a href=\"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/Library\/Methodist\/Origins\/Influences.html\" target=\"_blank\">Moravians<\/a>; German Lutherans who fostered a deeper faith through prayer and fellowship.<\/p>\n<p>How can you have this kind of faith when the ship is going down?\u00a0 They just kept praising God&#8230; over and over.\u00a0 The Moravians were being faithful.\u00a0 They were exercising awe.\u00a0 Wesley was exercising fear.<\/p>\n<p>When Wesley&#8217;s fear ran into the Moravian&#8217;s awe, it was as if John Wesley saw Jesus walking on the water towards that boat.\u00a0 There are a lot of people on boats that are sinking.\u00a0 Jesus is asking us to walk out to them and take their fear away and replace it with awe of God.<\/p>\n<p>Check out John Wesley&#8217;s journal from Sunday January 25, 1736<\/p>\n<div class='et-learn-more clearfix'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class='heading-more'>Click here to learn more<span class='et_learnmore_arrow'><span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='learn-more-content'><em><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Sunday, January 25, 1736 Wesley is on board a ship bound for America and observes the Moravians in the midst of life-threatening storms. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">At seven I went to the Germans. I had long before observed the great seriousness of their behaviour. Of their humility they had given a continual proof, by performing those servile offices for the other passengers, which none of the English would undertake; for which they desired, and would receive no pay, saying, \u201cit was good for their proud hearts,\u201d and \u201ctheir loving Saviour had done more for them.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And every day had given them occasion of showing a meekness which no injury could move. If they were pushed, struck, or thrown down, they rose again and went away; but no complaint was found in their mouth. There was now an opportunity of trying whether they were delivered from the Spirit of fear, as well as from that of pride, anger, and revenge. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In the midst of the psalm wherewith their service began, the sea broke over, split the main-sail in pieces, covered the ship, and poured in between the decks, as if the great deep had already swallowed us up. A terrible screaming began among the English. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Germans calmly sung on. I asked one of them afterwards, \u201cWas you not afraid?\u201d He answered, \u201cI thank God, no.\u201d I asked, \u201cBut were not your women and children afraid?\u201d He replied, mildly, \u201cNo; our women and children are not afraid to die.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">From them I went to their crying, trembling neighbours, and pointed out to them the difference in the hour of trial, between him that feareth God, and him that feareth him not. At twelve the wind fell. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This was the most glorious day which I have hitherto seen.<\/span><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>God was in control during that storm.\u00a0 God is with us during life&#8217;s pop quizzes.\u00a0 Everything changes when we add Jesus into the mix and let Him into &#8220;the boat&#8221; of our lives.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ask the adulterous woman who was about to be stoned (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John+8%3A3-11&amp;version=TLB\" target=\"_blank\">John 8:3-11<\/a>)&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>Ask the two disciples on the road to Emmaus (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=luke+24%3A13-34&amp;version=TLB\" target=\"_blank\">Luke 24:13-34<\/a>) &#8230;<\/li>\n<li>Ask Zacchaeus the tax collector (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Luke+19%3A1-9&amp;version=TLB\" target=\"_blank\">Luke 19:1-9<\/a>)&#8230;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Life&#8217;s Pop Quizzes<br \/>\n<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Life&#8217;s storms test us.\u00a0 But what do you do when a storm or &#8220;quiz&#8221; crashes into your life?\u00a0 Do you stay in fear?\u00a0 Or do you turn your fear into awe?\u00a0 What do you look for?\u00a0 Fear, or God?<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-info'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Just before the events described in this passage, Jesus had fed 5000 men (not counting women and children), and there were twelve baskets of food left over.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><em><span style=\"color: #003300;\">What happened with those 12 baskets?<\/span><\/em><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Could it be that these baskets were in the boat with the disciples as the storm raged?\u00a0 Could it be that their fear was turned to awe when they saw these 12 baskets of food in that boat?\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">What reminders of God&#8217;s strength surround us when we are in the midst of a storm?<\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<p>Let Jesus into your boat.\u00a0 Look to the reminders of God&#8217;s power.\u00a0 The baskets are sitting there!\u00a0 Turn your fear to awe, and God will do the impossible through you.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Jesus is the answer!<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Time for Your Quiz!<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #000080;\">This quiz isn&#8217;t a matter of life or death;
