{"id":36208,"date":"2025-09-02T11:49:00","date_gmt":"2025-09-02T15:49:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/?p=36208"},"modified":"2025-12-05T09:49:26","modified_gmt":"2025-12-05T14:49:26","slug":"2025-camp-meeting-a-summers-walk-through-the-grove","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/?p=36208","title":{"rendered":"2025 Camp Meeting: A Summer&#8217;s Walk Through the Grove"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Pitman United Methodist Church has its <a href=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/?p=1643\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">roots in the Camp Meetings<\/a> which gathered in a place that was then known as Pitman Grove.\u00a0 In the 154 years that have past since then, the town of Pitman sprouted out around from the Grove, the Pitman Methodist Episcopal Church was founded, and the church eventually became the Pitman United Methodist Church.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">But beyond history and tradition, the Pitman Camp Meeting is a series of weekly opportunities on the Sundays during the summer.\u00a0 These summer evenings are opportunities to sing, pray, and celebrate with our community and to catch up with friends who attend different churches.\u00a0 But more importantly, these evenings are opportunities to grow closer to Christ.\u00a0 Most of the host churches each week are United Methodist, but even within that commonality we are able to hear fresh perspectives from a variety of speakers.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">This summer was no different.\u00a0 During the schedule&#8217;s six weeks (from July 13 through August 24), we were challenged by topics ranging from how to see God, when to pray, and how to appreciate the magnitude of God&#8217;s goodness, righteousness, and forgiveness.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">&#8220;In the Garden&#8221;&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>One tradition of the Pitman Camp Meeting is to open the service by singing &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hymnsite.com\/lyrics\/umh314.sht\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">In the Garden<\/a>&#8221; (by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/In_the_Garden_(1912_song)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">C. Austin Miles<\/a>).\u00a0 Years ago, C. Austin Miles was a resident of Pitman, and it is said that he wrote his famous Easter hymn while inspired by the Pitman Camp Meetings.\u00a0 On that first Easter morning, Mary and the other women encountered the risen Jesus in a Garden.\u00a0 It was a personal and heartfelt conversation, and it all started when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bible.com\/bible\/111\/JHN.20.1-18.NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jesus called Mary by name<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Our risen Savior reaches out to each of us personally.\u00a0 Like Mary at the garden tomb and like the two disciples walking with Jesus on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bible.com\/bible\/111\/LUK.24.13-35.NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Road to Emmaus<\/a>, we too can know Jesus on a personal level.\u00a0 Our summer evenings in the Grove remind us that we can walk with Jesus in our own &#8220;gardens&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Below is a glimpse into each of those six weeks.\u00a0 Under each week&#8217;s heading, beneath the gallery of photos, click the &#8220;drop down box&#8221; to view a summary of that evening&#8217;s message.<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-warning'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> The following descriptions of the messages were made from my notes that I made as I sat in the &#8220;pews&#8221; (ok, bench) as a member of the congregation. (a quote from the movie Jaws alluding to Jonah and Noah).\u00a0 Those simple glasses (strips of cardboard with red and blue plastic lenses) make life&#8217;s &#8220;boat&#8221; navigable.\u00a0 Knowing how life should look in 3D allows us to turn fear into faith.\u00a0 When approaching the Philistine giant, Goliath, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bible.com\/bible\/111\/1SA.17.NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">David saw things differently<\/a> from his fearful countrymen.\u00a0 David saw through God&#8217;s lenses.\u00a0 He saw with a heart of faith and oneness with the almighty creator.<\/p>\n<p>If we are to see life with the same 3D vision that made David victorious over Goliath, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bible.com\/bible\/97\/ROM.12.MSG\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Romans 12<\/a> teaches us that there are three things we need to be doing:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #003300;\">Give it all to God<\/span><\/strong>: day in, day out, minute by minute in every detail, see God by your side.\u00a0 God is in the ordinary things in life.\u00a0 He&#8217;s not just there on Sunday morning when you go to church; He&#8217;s with you on Monday morning as you make your coffee.<\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #003300;\">Transformation<\/span><\/strong>.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bible.com\/bible\/111\/ROM.12.1-2NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Verse 2<\/a> tells us to transform your thinking&#8230;..\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Allow God to change you from the inside out.\u00a0 Just as those 3D glasses transform your vision, God can give you a new way of seeing- and living- everything.\u00a0 Through the Holy Spirit, God can give you a new understanding of life&#8217;s ups and downs, and you can experience the fruits of peace, love, joy (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bible.com\/bible\/111\/GAL.5.16-26.NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Galatians 5:16-26<\/a>).\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #003300;\">Be a part of the Body<\/span><\/strong>.\u00a0 Seeing in 3D allows us to see ourselves as part of Christ&#8217;s Body (i.e., the &#8220;Church&#8221;&#8230;. i.e., all of those who are faithfully following Jesus).\u00a0 Life&#8217;s purpose and meaning don&#8217;t come from being a solo act.\u00a0 Meaning in life comes from contributing our God-given gifts for a greater cause.\u00a0 Discipleship is a team effort (just like the production of a movie involves all of those people listed on the never ending list of credits that roll on the screen after the movie).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A life with 3D vision invites God into everything we do.\u00a0 While driving or making coffee, we realize that everything we do is a gift of God.\u00a0 Thanksgiving, awe, and wonder can spring out of any routine task.\u00a0 And as people watch us, they can see something different.\u00a0 Let Christ shape your vision so that when people see us they see Jesus.\u00a0 Walk in purpose.\u00a0 Live in a world of 3D vision.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #993366;\">==== WEEK 2 (July 20) ===<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\n<li>Speaker \/\u00a0 Music:\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jimhughesministries.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rev. Hughes is been in ministry for 53 years!\u00a0 At a young age, he felt the call into ministry, preaching the Gospel through his talents of music and drama.\u00a0 He has portrayed many Biblical characters.\u00a0 He has described the crucifixion through the eyes of Peter, John, and the Roman Centurion.\u00a0 But tonight he felt compelled to give a different vantage point.\u00a0 What did the crucifixion look like through the eyes of the Father?<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-shadow'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Rom 5:6-10\u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"color: #993366;\">You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly.\u00a0 Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die.\u00a0 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.\u00a0 Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God&#8217;s wrath through him! <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Eph 2:1-5 <\/span>\u00a0As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins,\u00a0 in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.\u00a0 All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath.\u00a0 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy,\u00a0 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions \u2014 it is by grace you have been saved.<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n<p>Why did Jesus die on the cross?\u00a0 There are a lot of good reasons about salvation, justification, and forgiveness.\u00a0 But the bottom line is that God&#8217;s righteousness demanded punishment for sin.\u00a0 The Cross was the object of God&#8217;s wrath.\u00a0 The Cross is the focal point; nothing in our relationship with God can work without the Cross.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At the beginning of time, the almighty Father faced a dilemma: how can He be a God of both infinite righteousness and of infinite love at the same time?\u00a0 From the beginning of the world, God committed Himself to His plan of redemption.<\/p>\n<p>In the garden, Jesus cried out, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bible.com\/bible\/111\/LUK.22.39-44.NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Father- is there any way that this cup can be taken from me?<\/a>&#8221;\u00a0 But the Father had to respond, &#8220;No.&#8221;\u00a0 Everything is possible for the Father&#8230;. except this.\u00a0 As much as He was in pain to see His sun suffer and as much as He wanted to remove the cup from Him, He could not.\u00a0 Every sin- past, present, and future- had to be punished.\u00a0 But God is infinite in love.\u00a0 He could not (and can not) turn His back on Adam&#8217;s race.\u00a0 How can He be both just and merciful?\u00a0 How can judge sins without denying His love and mercy?<\/p>\n<p>God longed for a different way, but there was none.\u00a0 Jesus became sin for all of us.\u00a0 The wrath of God was poured on Him and for a time of darkness, the Father forsook the Son.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bible.com\/bible\/111\/ISA.53.NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Isaiah 53:10<\/a> tells us that it was the LORD&#8217;s will to crush Him and cause Him to suffer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Righteousness and love.\u00a0 As He hung on the cross, forsaken by His Father, the Son faced the full wrath of a holy God.\u00a0 Like the scapegoat (described in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bible.com\/bible\/111\/LEV.16.20-22.NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Leviticus 16<\/a>), Jesus carried all of our sins.\u00a0 He was the object of wrath.\u00a0 And yet, as He willingly drank the cup- extended his hands to accept the nails- Jesus demonstrated His Father&#8217;s infinite love.\u00a0 He is smitten, we are healed&#8230; infinite mercy.<\/p>\n<p>When Jesus cried out &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bible.com\/bible\/111\/JHN.19.28-30.NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">It is Finished!<\/a>&#8221; the Father&#8217;s wrath and mercy were satisfied.\u00a0 The plan from the foundations of the world had been completed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><em>Is there someone hurting others through their addictions to drugs?<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc;\">\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Your debt is paid!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><em>Is there someone pushing others down to raise himself up?<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc;\">\n<li>Your debt is paid!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><em>Is there someone who lies,\u00a0 who steals, who is cheating on their spouse?<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc;\">\n<li>Your debt is paid!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When the Father&#8217;s wrath was satisfied, His infinite love tore the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bible.com\/bible\/111\/MAT.27.50-53.NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Temple curtain<\/a> that separated us from Him.\u00a0 Our debt is paid and we can approach the Heavenly Father.\u00a0 In the midst of our difficulties and darkness, we can go to our Holy and Loving Father, because there is a Savior who bridged the gap between Justice and Love.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Rev. What matters is Jesus.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a good thing to be a &#8220;Jesus Freak!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>When we worship on Sunday, the music style, the Liturgy style, and the Bible Translation don&#8217;t matter that much.\u00a0 So, what is worship?<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-shadow'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bible.com\/bible\/111\/ROM.12.NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rom 12:1-2<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God&#8217;s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God \u2014 this is your spiritual act of worship.\u00a0 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God&#8217;s will is \u2014 his good, pleasing and perfect will.<\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<p>It was a hot mid-summer&#8217;s night in the Grove Auditorium.\u00a0 We left the comfort of our air conditioned homes and cars to attend a worship service in the heat and humidity.\u00a0 Over 150 years ago, people from all over came to the Pitman Grove to attend the Camp Meeting.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 People, then and now, need to hear the Name of Jesus!\u00a0 God can use any environment or worship style to draw our hearts to Him if we are desperate to hear Him.<\/p>\n<p>Worship isn&#8217;t a ritual, an order of events, printed prayers or songs out of a hymnal.\u00a0 The Sunday morning things help us focus on Jesus, but at the heart of worship, there&#8217;s more to it than the stuff we do on Sunday mornings.\u00a0 What is (and isn&#8217;t) true worship?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Worship is <\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">NOT<\/span><\/span><em><span style=\"color: #008000;\"> a Star-Studded Church Service&#8230;<\/span><\/em><\/h4>\n<p>Entertainment and celebrity mega preachers sometimes draw more attention to themselves than to Jesus.\u00a0 True worship always puts the focus on Jesus.\u00a0 When we worship, we must be aware of the things that distract us from honest reflection, prayer, and a heart-felt outburst of thanking God for all He&#8217;s done and for all He is.<\/p>\n<p>True worship has nothing to do with how beautifully the music is performed or how well the message is spoken.\u00a0 Praise from the heart, even it it&#8217;s woefully off-tune, sounds better to God than a perfect performance.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Worship is a Holy Sacrifice&#8230;<\/span><\/em><\/h4>\n<p>A worship service might be held on Sunday, but <span style=\"background-color: #ffff99;\"><em>true worship occurs on Monday through Saturday<\/em><\/span>.\u00a0 Throughout the week, we can worship God by telling others about Him.\u00a0 Witness- what does Jesus mean to you?\u00a0 How has your relationship with God given you hope, peace and joy?\u00a0 When we live that out and tell others, we are worshiping.\u00a0 Obedience is worship.\u00a0 When we donate food, help to repair homes, or visit shut-ins, we are giving a Holy Sacrifice.\u00a0 Showing God&#8217;s love through our service is worship.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Worship is Surrender&#8230;<\/span><\/em><\/h4>\n<p>We may have a heart like David&#8217;s (&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bible.com\/bible\/111\/ACT.13.22.NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a man after God&#8217;s own heart<\/a>&#8220;), but we can still mess up.\u00a0 David sure did.\u00a0 At the foundation of worship is a heart-attitude that is honest and authentic.\u00a0 We can gain honesty and authenticity when we admit our shortcomings.\u00a0 When we go to Jesus and say &#8220;I messed up!-\u00a0 Lord, change me!&#8221;\u00a0 As it says in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bible.com\/bible\/111\/ROM.12.1-2.NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Romans 12:2<\/a>, plead with God to &#8220;transform your mind&#8221;&#8230; so that we don&#8217;t &#8220;conform to the world.&#8221;\u00a0 It takes faith to allow God to change you.\u00a0 But the highest form of worship comes when we surrender to God.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Worship is Genuine&#8230;<\/span><\/em><\/h4>\n<p>Nobody is perfect, and people really don&#8217;t expect perfection from you.\u00a0 But they do want you to be honest. Deep inside, everyone is looking for God. They might put on a self-sufficient face, but people are looking for people who are genuine about their faith and failings.\u00a0 When our heart lines up with our actions, we can be trusted, and that trust allows us to share the source of our authenticity.\u00a0 Say the Name of Jesus- it is Jesus who has transformed me and made my life authentic.\u00a0 In all of our ordinary day to day events, God is calling us to represent Jesus.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">~\u00a0 \u00a0~\u00a0 \u00a0~<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Pastor Mike ended his sermon with a song he wrote: &#8220;Say the Name&#8221;&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"color: #993366;\">There is a name that turns the dark to light, \u00a0There&#8217;s a name that changes everything, There&#8217;s a Name that saves. We can&#8217;t face the world by ourselves.\u00a0 There is something going on that pulls us away from God and pushes us to the fallacy of trying to trust in our own strength.\u00a0 It&#8217;s the LORD and His mighty power that gives us strength.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We can&#8217;t produce justice by ourselves.\u00a0 If we take revenge it often falls back on ourselves. The first disciples&#8217; lives were always at risk.\u00a0 They could have escaped the problems in their own power by recanting their faith, but they didn&#8217;t.\u00a0 They could have fought back and taken revenge,, but they didn&#8217;t.\u00a0 Instead, they trusted in God.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">How can I get by today?<\/span>\u00a0 Trust God- We don&#8217;t know the full story.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">What if things don&#8217;t go according to my plans?<\/span>\u00a0 Trust God- His plan is better.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">What if I want to give up?<\/span>\u00a0 Trust God-\u00a0 He will help you get through it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">I can&#8217;t do what God has called me to do.<\/span>\u00a0 Don&#8217;t trust in your own abilities; God doesn&#8217;t call us to failure.\u00a0 Trust God!<\/p>\n<p>The next time you feel a coin in your pocket, pull it out and take a look at the motto:\u00a0 In God We Trust.\u00a0 Let it be a reminder of where our strength comes from.\u00a0 Trust God.<\/p>\n<p>Our lives have mountains and valleys, easy times and rough times.\u00a0 But through it all we are called to one purpose in God- Trust Him. class='et_learnmore_arrow'><span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='learn-more-content'><p>There&#8217;s an old hymn called &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=lyrics+whisper+a+prayer+in+the+morning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Whisper a Prayer<\/a>&#8221;\u00a0 (by Scott Lawrence).\u00a0 It was written in 1922 but its advice is as true today as it was over 100 years ago.\u00a0 It says:<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-shadow'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">&#8220;Whisper a prayer in the morning.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Whisper a prayer at Noon.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Whisper a prayer in the evening.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">&#8220;God answers prayers in the morning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">God answers prayers at noon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">God answers prayers in the evening.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">&#8220;Jesus may come in the morning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Jesus may come at noon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Jesus may come in the evening.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Bible gives many examples of prayer and shows over and over again how God hears our prayers and answers them.\u00a0 He may not answer them in the way we expect or want, but God does hear and answer according to His perfect will.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Here are three examples of prayers in the morning, noontime, and evening&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Morning<\/span><\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bible.com\/bible\/111\/MRK.16.NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mark 16<\/a>:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bible.com\/bible\/111\/MRK.16.1-4.NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1-4<\/a>)&#8230;<\/h4>\n<p>Early in the morning, as soon as the Sabbath ended, three women were on their way to the tomb to anoint Jesus&#8217; body.\u00a0 Guards had been stationed at the tomb and a big heavy stone had bee rolled across it.\u00a0 This didn&#8217;t stop their resolve to anoint their Lord&#8217;s body, but as they made their way to the tomb, they kept wondering how they would gain access to it.\u00a0 Who would roll the stone away?\u00a0 What about the guards?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Bible doesn&#8217;t specifically say, but along the way in the early morning, these devout women surely must have prayed.\u00a0 Their &#8220;wondering&#8221; was a &#8220;whispered prayer.&#8221;\u00a0 This entire Passover Sabbath must have been a painful and confusing one for them.\u00a0 They lost their Lord and best friend. He was humiliated and treated like a criminal.\u00a0 They needed to give Him a respectful burial, and yet they must have been confused about how they would do it.\u00a0 So they must have prayed.\u00a0 And God answered: the guards had fled away in fear, and an angel (or earthquake, or something) had rolled the stone away.\u00a0 God had answered their prayers and He made a way.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Noon<\/span> <\/em>( <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bible.com\/bible\/111\/ACT.10.NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Acts 10<\/a>:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bible.com\/bible\/111\/ACT.10.9-20.NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">9-20<\/a>)&#8230;<\/h4>\n<p>Answering the Spirit&#8217;s call, Peter traveled throughout the region healing and preaching.\u00a0 He ended up in Jappa and stayed with Simon (a tanner).\u00a0 Meanwhile, God was giving Cornelius (a Roman soldier&#8230; a Gentile), a vision compelling him to send for Peter.\u00a0 The next day, miles away in Joppa, Peter went up on the roof for his noontime prayers.\u00a0 God gave him a vision about clean and unclean food.\u00a0 Jesus had fulfilled the Law and salvation no longer demanded strict adherence to the Law: &#8220;What the Lord has made clean, you must not call profane.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Coincidentally&#8221; (<em><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">no such thing!<\/span><\/em>) , as soon as Petter&#8217;s vision ended, the men that Cornelius had sent showed up.\u00a0 The devout Jew came face to face with the Gentiles.\u00a0 Through the vision, and in response to prayer, God had instructed Peter that He was also the God of the Gentiles.\u00a0 Salvation through Jesus and the gift of the Holy Spirit was available to the Gentiles too.\u00a0 God answered Peter&#8217;s whispered noontime prayer, and in a way that Peter could have never imagined.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Evening<\/span> <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bible.com\/bible\/111\/ACT.12.NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Acts 12<\/a>:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bible.com\/bible\/111\/ACT.12.6-16.NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">6-16<\/a>\u00a0)&#8230;<\/h4>\n<p>Things were getting difficult for the Christians in Jerusalem.\u00a0 James was killed and then Peter was thrown into jail and was going to be executed the next day.\u00a0 That night, the believers gathered together to pray.\u00a0 In their terror and confusion about the persecution, they prayed for Peter&#8217;s deliverance.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As they were whispering their evening prayers, a knock cam on the door.\u00a0 A servant girl named Rhoda answered the door and was shocked to see Peter standing there.\u00a0 In her confusion and joy, she slammed the door closed without letting him in, and then she told everyone that Peter was at the gate.\u00a0 They thought she was nuts, or that she was seeing a ghost.\u00a0 But when they came to their senses, they opened the door and learned how God had answered their prayers by miraculously\u00a0 freeing Peter from the jail and saving his life.\u00a0 A whispered evening prayer was answered.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #993366;\">==== WEEK 6 (August 17) ===<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\n<li>Host Church:\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joycf.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Joy Fellowship \/ Seek Him Ministries<\/a>\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Music:\u00a0 Carol Crispin<\/li>\n<li>Speaker:\u00a0 Rev. Interestingly, this is the only miracle that is contained in all four Gospels (in addition to the resurrection).<\/p>\n<p>The crowd had a need: it was late in the day and they were hungry.\u00a0 So Jesus met that need.\u00a0 In fact, He EXCEEDED it (there were 12 baskets of leftovers).\u00a0 There was a lot of food, but the crowd didn&#8217;t have to do anything to prepare it.\u00a0 They didn&#8217;t have to go into town and buy it.\u00a0 The only thing they did was to give the little they had and then trust in Jesus to do the rest.\u00a0 They didn&#8217;t have to do anything other than believe and receive what Jesus gave them.<\/p>\n<p>We see the same generosity and all-sufficiency from God throughout the Bible.\u00a0 During the Exodus, God provided manna every day.\u00a0 And if that wasn&#8217;t enough, God provided quail every evening.\u00a0 The people had all they needed (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bible.com\/bible\/111\/EXO.16.NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Exodus 16:10-18<\/a>).\u00a0 In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bible.com\/bible\/111\/JHN.6.25-40.NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John 6:35<\/a>, Jesus told the people that He was the &#8220;Bread of Life.&#8221;\u00a0 If you believe in Him you will never go thirsty.\u00a0 In fact, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bible.com\/bible\/111\/JHN.7.37-39.NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rivers of living water will flow from within you.<\/a>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Jesus Christ is really, REALLY, good&#8230;.<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He gives us all that we need; He gives us more than we need.\u00a0 But we tend to look elsewhere for Joy, Peace and Rest.\u00a0 Instead of going to the source, we try to create our own supplies.\u00a0 Through the prophet Jeremiah (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bible.com\/bible\/111\/JER.2.13.NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">see Jeremiah 2:13<\/a>), God accuses the Israelites of two sins:\u00a0 First they rejected God (the source of living water), and then they tried to build their own cisterns (broken containers that couldn&#8217;t hold any water).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Reject and Replace.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t we do the same thing?\u00a0 We want Joy, Peace, and Rest.\u00a0 We need purpose in life.\u00a0 God offers that to us.\u00a0 But we turn to &#8220;worthless idols&#8221;: things like wealth, possessions, accomplishments.\u00a0 We keep ignoring God and building broken cisterns.<\/p>\n<p>But Jesus is the source of all we need.\u00a0 Through His death on the cross He took away our sin nature and replaced it with His own sinless nature.\u00a0 If we accept that gift, our relationship with God is restored and we&#8217;ll have more than we need.<\/p>\n<p>In the prayer Jesus taught us (the one we call &#8220;The Lord&#8217;s Prayer&#8221;, see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bible.com\/bible\/111\/MAT.6.9-15.NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Matthew 6:9-15<\/a>), Jesus outlined what our relationship with God should be.\u00a0 He showed us how to move from our broken cisterns and return to the &#8220;stream of living water.&#8221; \u00a0\u00a0Here&#8217;s a paraphrase of these familiar words:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #003300;\">I exist for Your glory.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not about what I want to do.\u00a0 Do whatever YOU need so I can work with You.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #003300;\">I only need a bit of bread each day; just enough to survive.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t need a lot of stuff.\u00a0 In fact, don&#8217;t give me a lot of worldly goods, otherwise I&#8217;ll start trusting in them instead of You.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #003300;\">Keep granting me fresh forgiveness; I mess up and I need your forgiveness all the time.\u00a0 Set me free from myself.\u00a0 Help me to forgive others and to keep evil from me.\u00a0 It all belongs to You, and it all comes from You.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Jesus is good.\u00a0 Really, REALLY good.\u00a0 We don&#8217;t need to look anywhere else.<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #993366;\">==== WEEK 7 (August 24) ===<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\n<li>Host Church:\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ebenezerumchurchauburn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ebnezer UMC (in Auburn<\/a>) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/HudsonUnitedMethodistChurch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hudson UMC (in Pedricktown)<\/a>\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Music:\u00a0 Isaac Walker<\/li>\n<li>Speaker:\u00a0 Rev. If you can&#8217;t remember the exact time and place where you encountered this new birth, are you really born again?\u00a0 In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bible.com\/bible\/111\/JHN.3.NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John 3<\/a>:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bible.com\/bible\/111\/JHN.3.3.NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3<\/a>, Jesus said that nobody can see the Kingdom of God unless they&#8217;re born again.\u00a0 Nobody has memories of the moment they were born.\u00a0 But we know we were born; we&#8217;re here!\u00a0 We use senses like touch, sight, hearing, and taste.\u00a0 We can engage with our surroundings, so we must have been born.\u00a0 If we have a sense of our sin and a hunger to grow closer to God, God put it there.\u00a0 A dead person can&#8217;t revive himself.\u00a0 If we have a taste of the Kingdom, God&#8217;s prevenient grace has awakened us.<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-shadow'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><p><em><span style=\"color: #993366;\">As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #993366;\">But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions\u2014it is by grace you have been saved. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #993366;\">And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #993366;\">For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith\u2014and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God\u2014 not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God\u2019s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bible.com\/bible\/111\/EPH.2.NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ephesians 2<\/a>:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bible.com\/bible\/111\/EPH.2.1-10.NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1-10<\/a><\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<p>But without God&#8217;s gift of grace, we are born dead in sin.\u00a0 We never have to teach a child how to lie or to be selfish.\u00a0 When Adam<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-23652 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Tile-01AdamEve-_IMG_3932-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"155\" height=\"116\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Tile-01AdamEve-_IMG_3932-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Tile-01AdamEve-_IMG_3932.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 155px) 100vw, 155px\" \/> and Eve ate the apple (from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil), they wanted to have things their own way and to get God out of their way (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bible.com\/bible\/111\/GEN.3.NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Genesis 3<\/a>:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bible.com\/bible\/111\/GEN.3.1-7.NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1-7<\/a>). They wanted to choose for themselves what is right and wrong. Instead of trusting the eternal\u00a0God to guide them into paths of righteousness and to give them joy, peace and purpose, they decided to reject God and figure it out for themselves.\u00a0 They were spiritually dead and needed to be born again.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And we are just like them.\u00a0 We are Adam&#8217;s seed, and the apple never lands far from the tree.\u00a0 Sin is within us, and we are spiritually dead.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><em>But God&#8230;<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But God in His grace provided a way for us to &#8220;wake up.&#8221;\u00a0 In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bible.com\/bible\/111\/EPH.2.NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ephesians 2<\/a>:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bible.com\/bible\/111\/EPH.2.5.NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">5<\/a> Paul tells us that God <em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">&#8220;made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions.<\/span><\/em>&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0 God made us alive.\u00a0 We didn&#8217;t (and can&#8217;t) do anything to make ourselves alive.\u00a0 All of it is a gift that we don&#8217;t deserve.\u00a0 As Paul puts it (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bible.com\/bible\/111\/EPH.2.8-9.NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in verses 8-9<\/a>), &#8220;<span style=\"color: #800080;\"><em>For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith \u2014 and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God\u2014\u00a0 not by works, so that no one can boast.<\/em><\/span>&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><em>But God&#8230;<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Things look pretty bleak for human-kind, But God&#8230; God in His love and grace gives us a fresh chance.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Jesus is the only human to ever walk the earth who had no sin. But, it&#8217;s sin that causes death.\u00a0 In order for Jesus to die on the cross, He had to &#8220;borrow&#8221; our own sin (yours and mine).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This sin that we carry separates us from God.\u00a0 In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bible.com\/bible\/111\/EPH.2.13.NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">verse 13<\/a>, Paul writes: &#8220;<em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ.<\/span><\/em>&#8221;\u00a0 It&#8217;s the blood of Christ (not our own efforts) that brings us back to God.\u00a0 \u00a0If we could earn our salvation by doing good things, we&#8217;d take credit for it and even boast about how much better we are than &#8220;those other people.&#8221;\u00a0 But God&#8217;s gift of salvation is available to anyone.\u00a0 If we could save ourselves by being good, than Jesus died for nothing.<\/p>\n<p>But Jesus did die on a cross and God&#8217;s justice was satisfied.\u00a0 Our sinfulness was paid for.\u00a0 And God proved it by raising Jesus from the dead.\u00a0 In verse 6 Paul writes, &#8220;<em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus.<\/span><\/em>&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><em>But God&#8230;.<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sin is paid for, and when God sees us He sees Jesus.<\/p>\n<p>Salvation, being &#8220;born again&#8221; and &#8220;seeing the Kingdom&#8221; is all about God.\u00a0 We can&#8217;t buy this relationship, but God gave it for us.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If it&#8217;s all a gift and it we&#8217;re saved by faith, than can&#8217;t we just say &#8220;hey, I&#8217;m heaven bound and I&#8217;ll just go on living the way I want&#8221;?\u00a0 No- that faith that saved us compels us to constantly see the Kingdom of God; to always grow closer to God.\u00a0 In verse 10, Paul tells us that &#8220;<em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">we are God&#8217;s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.<\/span><\/em>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p>Once we&#8217;re born again and catch a glimpse of the Kingdom of Heaven, we don&#8217;t want a second bite out of that apple.\u00a0 We see God&#8217;s love, justice, and grace and we entrust everything to Him.\u00a0 God knows better, so being born again means that you want to walk in the good works that God prepared for us instead of the pleasures that we invent.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re always tempted by the &#8220;apples&#8221; in life, but God gives us a way to escape from that sin and to see the Kingdom.\u00a0 We can&#8217;t do it on our own strength.\u00a0 All we have to do is to accept that gift and allow God to make us alive.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>\u00a0<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">=\u00a0 \u00a0=\u00a0 \u00a0=\u00a0 \u00a0=\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">In 2026, the Tradition Will Continue&#8230;.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This was the 154th season of the Pitman Camp Meeting, and we look forward to next summer&#8217;s 155th season!\u00a0 These summer evenings are more than habit or tradition.\u00a0 During the relaxed time of summer, Camp Meeting gives us the chance for a fresh worship experience.\u00a0 Like a quiet walk through a garden, fresh perspectives can help us strengthen our view of God and to draw closer to Him.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">And He walks with me, and He talks with me,<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">And He tells me I am His own,<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">And the joy we share as we tarry there,<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">None other has ever known.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Stay tuned&#8230;.
