Retreat Together to Live Harmoniously (2\/21\/25)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>The 2025 Mens&#8217; Retreat is almost upon us!\u00a0 The retreat will be held on the weekend of February 21-23.\u00a0 For 23 years (except for the pandemic year), the men of PUMC and our community have gathered at the Black Rock Retreat\u00a0 Center to get away from the daily distractions and to focus on our walks as disciples.\u00a0 Black Rock offers series of &#8220;pre-programmed&#8221; retreats, but we&#8217;ve always arranged our own themes and speakers.\u00a0 This year, the sessions will be led by a duo of familiar pastors:\u00a0 PUMC&#8217;s\u00a0 Mike Chapman and The Church of the Nazarene&#8217;s Pastor Shane Ross.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Here are the details:<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-shadow'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">WHO<\/span><\/strong>:\u00a0 Any man (16 years and older)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">WHERE<\/span><\/strong>:\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackrockretreat.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Black Rock Retreat Center (Quarreyville, PA<\/a>) (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackrockretreat.com\/about-us\/driving-directions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">directions<\/a>)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">WHEN<\/span><\/strong>: Friday February 21 (6 PM&#8217;ish) through Sunday February 23, 2025 (noon&#8217;ish)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">HOW MUCH<\/span><\/strong>:\u00a0 $215 (but don&#8217;t let that stop you if you can&#8217;t afford it!\u00a0 Scholarships are available.\u00a0 The cost includes lodging and five meals (Saturday breakfast , lunch, and dinner.\u00a0 Sunday breakfast and lunch).\u00a0 All meals are buffets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">WHAT<\/span><\/strong>: A weekend away to grow closer to each other and to God.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Details vary from year to year, but here&#8217;s what we usually do:<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #003300;\">Friday afternoon \/ evening<\/span><\/strong>:\u00a0 travel to Black Rock (carpools will be arranged), and check in at the front desk.\u00a0 Most of us get dinner at the Quarryville Family Restaurant, which is a short drive away from Black Rock.\u00a0 This optional dinner is not included in the Black Rock price.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #003300;\">Friday Evening<\/span><\/strong>:\u00a0 After getting settled in, meet in our conference room for the First Session.\n<p><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Saturday Morning<\/span><\/strong>:\u00a0 Breakfast will be provided by Black Rock (<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><em><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">always really good stuff!<\/span><\/em><\/span>).\u00a0 Somewhere around 9AM, we&#8217;ll gather in our Conference Room for the Second session.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Saturday Afternoon<\/span><\/strong>:\u00a0 Free time!\u00a0 Enjoy Black Rock&#8217;s many amenities.\u00a0 Sit by the lodge&#8217;s large fireplace, take a walk through the property&#8217;s hiking trails, explore the nature museum, play basketball or frisbee tag (or chess!), or maybe even take a nap.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Saturday Evening<\/span><\/strong>:\u00a0 Gather for the provided dinner.\u00a0 Afterwards, meet in our conference room for the Third Session.\n<p><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Sunday Morning<\/span><\/strong>:\u00a0 Breakfast.\u00a0 Afterwards, we&#8217;ll gather in our conference room for the Fourth Session, and wrap up with a short communion worship service.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Sunday Noon<\/span><\/strong>:\u00a0 Lunch will be provided (but many of us opt to head home right after the final session).\u00a0 Depending on how long you stick around (and on traffic), you&#8217;ll be home by 2-3PM.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For those who are familiar with Black Rock, we have booked rooms in the Maranatha Lodge (3 per room), and we are meeting in the Dogwood Conference Room (which is on the opposite side of the property- it&#8217;s worth the walk&#8230;.).\u00a0 Meals will probably be provided in the Maranatha Lodge, but we&#8217;ll find out for sure after we arrive.<\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-download'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: <\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Hostile Living&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In November 2024 we endured a political election that split the country down the middle.\u00a0 Possibly moreso than ever, our lives are constantly being bombarded by things that divide us:\u00a0 \u00a0politics, religion, wars, church policies, and even sports (<em><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">ask any Eagles fan how they feel about the Cowboys!<\/span><\/em>).\u00a0 \u00a0Jesus called us to remain &#8220;in the Vine&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bible.com\/bible\/111\/JHN.15.NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John 15<\/a>), but the world keeps trying to send us to our own corners.<\/p>\n<p>Even within the church, competing ideas on theology, worship styles, and personalities work to divide us.<\/p>\n<p>People seek relief from this stress in many different ways.\u00a0 We turn to religion, hobbies, media, and friends who think like us.\u00a0 Some of us are into gathering as much money and possessions that they can get their hands on.\u00a0 Others constantly burnish their own reputation and sense of righteousness.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The world&#8217;s values make it hard to admit that you&#8217;re wrong, but Jesus calls us to be humble.\u00a0 He calls us to love each other, even if they are different from us.\u00a0 He calls us to repent, not to defend our reputation.\u00a0 The walk of a Christian runs against the flow of the world&#8217;s values.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Harmonious Living&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Jesus called us to join together to be fed on a common source of nourishment (the Holy Spirit).\u00a0 Those who have been given to Him are not unified by cultural, politics,\u00a0 hobbies (or even by sports teams).\u00a0 True unity comes from\u00a0 the God who created us all.\u00a0 We all belong to Christ because the Father has given us to Him (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bible.com\/bible\/111\/JHN.17.NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John 17:6<\/a>), but the world continues to categorize us and to pull us apart.<\/p>\n<p>Pushing against the forces of the world which pull us apart, Jesus comes into our lives with forgiveness, humility, hope, and love.\u00a0 The things that Jesus offers us\u00a0 join us together, and more importantly, join us to God.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: #ffff99;\">Jesus doesn&#8217;t barge into our lives; we can choose to continue to live in the things that push us apart<\/span>.\u00a0 But if we accept the gifts from God and lay aside our own &#8220;needs&#8221; for self satisfaction and pride, we&#8217;ll find that the forces that divide us melt away.\u00a0 We&#8217;ll find that the gift of &#8220;<strong>Harmonious Living<\/strong>&#8221; from God is way more satisfying than the temporary things we get from the world.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few examples of what Jesus said about God&#8217;s &#8220;Harmonious Living&#8221; <br \/>\n(<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><em><span style=\"color: clearfix'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='et_left_tabs_bg'><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t<ul class='et-tabs-control'>\n\t\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tOne with God\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tOne Branch\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tOne Loaf\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tOne Flock\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tOne Spirit\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tOne Truth\n\t\t<\/a><\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul> <!-- .et-tabs-control --> \n\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content'>\n\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-main-wrap'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-wrapper'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bible.com\/bible\/111\/JHN.17.NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John 17:20-23&#8230;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message,\u00a0 that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.\u00a0 I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one\u2014\u00a0 I in them and you in me\u2014so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bible.com\/bible\/111\/JHN.15.NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John 15:5-7&#8230;<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-NIV-26705\" class=\"text John-15-5\"><span class=\"woj\">\u201cI am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit;\u00a0apart from me you can do nothing.<\/span><\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-26706\" class=\"text John-15-6\"><span class=\"woj\"><sup class=\"versenum\">\u00a0<\/sup>If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.<\/span><\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-26707\" class=\"text John-15-7\"><span class=\"woj\"><sup class=\"versenum\">\u00a0<\/sup>If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.<\/span><\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bible.com\/bible\/111\/JHN.6.NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John 6:32-35..<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-NIV-26290\" class=\"text John-6-32\">Jesus said to them,\u00a0<span class=\"woj\">\u201cVery truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven.<\/span><\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-26291\" class=\"text John-6-33\"><span class=\"woj\"><sup class=\"versenum\">\u00a0<\/sup>For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven\u00a0and gives life to the world.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-NIV-26292\" class=\"text John-6-34\"><sup class=\"versenum\">\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cSir,\u201d they said, \u201calways give us this bread.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span><span id=\"en-NIV-26293\" class=\"text John-6-35\"><sup class=\"versenum\">\u00a0<\/sup>Then Jesus declared,\u00a0<span class=\"woj\">\u201cI am\u00a0the bread of life.\u00a0Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes\u00a0in me will never be thirsty.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bible.com\/bible\/111\/JHN.10.NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John 10:14-16&#8230;<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-NIV-26496\" class=\"text John-10-14\"><span class=\"woj\">\u201cI am the good shepherd;\u00a0I know my sheep\u00a0and my sheep know me\u2014<\/span><\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-26497\" class=\"text John-10-15\"><span class=\"woj\"><sup class=\"versenum\">\u00a0<\/sup>just as the Father knows me and I know the Father\u2014and I lay down my life for the sheep.<\/span><\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-26498\" class=\"text John-10-16\"><span class=\"woj\"><sup class=\"versenum\">\u00a0<\/sup>I have other sheep\u00a0that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock\u00a0and one shepherd.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bible.com\/bible\/111\/JHN.14.NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John 14:15-20&#8230;<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"text John-14-15\"><span class=\"woj\"><sup class=\"versenum\">\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cIf you love me, keep my commands.<\/span><\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-26685\" class=\"text John-14-16\"><span class=\"woj\"><sup class=\"versenum\">\u00a0<\/sup>And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate\u00a0to help you and be with you forever\u2014<\/span><\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-26686\" class=\"text John-14-17\"><span class=\"woj\"><sup class=\"versenum\">\u00a0<\/sup>the Spirit of truth.\u00a0The world cannot accept him,\u00a0because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be<sup class=\"footnote\" style=\"font-size: 0.625em; line-height: normal; position: relative; vertical-align: text-top; top: auto; display: inline;\" data-fn=\"#fen-NIV-26686c\" data-link=\"&#091;&lt;a href=&quot;#fen-NIV-26686c&quot; title=&quot;See footnote c&quot;&gt;c&lt;\/a&gt;&#093;\">[<\/sup>in you.<\/span><\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-26687\" class=\"text John-14-18\"><span class=\"woj\"><sup class=\"versenum\">\u00a0<\/sup>I will not leave you as orphans;\u00a0I will come to you.<\/span><\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-26688\" class=\"text John-14-19\"><span class=\"woj\"><sup class=\"versenum\">\u00a0<\/sup>Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me.\u00a0Because I live, you also will live.<\/span><\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-26689\" class=\"text John-14-20\"><span class=\"woj\"><sup class=\"versenum\">\u00a0<\/sup>On that day\u00a0you will realize that I am in my Father,\u00a0and you are in me, and I am in you.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bible.com\/bible\/111\/JHN.14.NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John 14:6&#8230;<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"text John-14-15\"><span class=\"woj\"><sup class=\"versenum\">\u00a0<\/sup> \u201cI am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.&#8221;<\/span><\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div> <!-- .tabs-left -->\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\t\t<div class='author-shortcodes'>\n\t\t\t<div class='author-inner'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='author-image'>\n\t\t\t<img src='https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/et_temp\/Chapel-Bible-_0728041326-x600-181820_60x60.jpg' alt='' \/>\n\t\t\t<div class='author-overlay'><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div> <!-- .author-image --> \n\t\t<div class='author-info'>\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><span id=\"en-NIV-28309\" class=\"text Rom-15-5\"><sup class=\"versenum\">\u00a0<\/sup>May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind\u00a0toward each other that Christ Jesus had,<\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-28310\" class=\"text Rom-15-6\"><sup class=\"versenum\">\u00a0<\/sup>so that with <strong>one mind and one voice<\/strong> you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bible.com\/bible\/111\/ROM.15.NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Romans 15:5-6<\/a><\/p>\n\t\t<\/div> <!-- .author-info -->\n\t\t\t<\/div> <!-- .author-inner -->\n\t\t<\/div> <!-- .author-shortcodes -->\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Two churches, one Church<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Humans have made denominations, but Jesus made the Church.\u00a0 When things are working the way God wants, Jesus&#8217; Church has &#8220;<strong><em><span style=\"color: #993366;\">One mind, one voice&#8230;.<\/span><\/em><\/strong>&#8221; (and that voice is all about Jesus).<\/p>\n<p>For years, the annual &#8220;Men&#8217;s Retreat&#8221; has been strictly an activity in the Pitman United Methodist Church.
