The Pitman Camp Meeting is a 153-year tradition that’s held in the Pitman Grove every summer.\u00a0 Beyond being a\u00a0 time marked tradition, the Camp Meeting was actually critical in the founding of our town, and church!\u00a0 Currently, services are held on Sunday evenings during July and August, and different local churches take turns in “hosting” the evening.\u00a0 The “Hosts” provide the music and speaker.\u00a0 PUMC’s turn came on August 18, 2024, and Pastor Mike gave the sermon (it was his “debut” at the Pitman Camp Meeting).<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Praise God with Clashing Cymbals… and Guitars!<\/span><\/h3>\n

Our Praise Team,\u00a0 led by music director \/ pianist\u00a0 Sue Crispin,\u00a0 provided the music throughout the service.\u00a0 This year, we ware happy to welcome Pastor Mike and\u00a0 his son Micha as “new members”;\u00a0 Pastor Mike\u00a0 played guitar and Micha added percussion using his cajonga (“box drum”).\u00a0 The “old members” of the praise team added vocals,\u00a0 drums, and bass.<\/p>\n

Following the Pitman Camp Meeting tradition, we opened with a song written by Pitman resident C. Austin Miles: “In the Garden”.\u00a0 We then sang some familiar hymns and choruses:\u00a0 “Blessed Assurance,” “Standing on the Promises”, “Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus”, and\u00a0 then closed the service with “Leaning on the Everlasting Arms.”\u00a0 Pastor Mike also sang his own composition,\u00a0 “Say the Name.”<\/p>\n

Spinning Out of Control?\u00a0 Hang on to Jesus!!!<\/span><\/h3>\n

Pastor Mike’s sermon\u00a0 was about- who else…. Jesus!\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The message was based on John 15:4-8<\/a>.\u00a0 In this passage, Jesus told His disciples…<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t

Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. <\/span><\/p>\n

Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\u201cI am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.\u00a0 If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.<\/span><\/p>\n

If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.\u00a0 This is to my Father\u2019s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pastor Mike opened his message with a memory of how he used to ride a merry-go-round at a park near his childhood home.\u00a0 The ride featured a brass ring that you could grab.\u00a0 But it was placed far away enough from the circumference of the ride that you needed to stretch out and precariously hang on to the edge of the horse as the ride whirled past the ring.\u00a0 To grab the ring,\u00a0 you had to hang on.\u00a0 If you didn’t hang on, you could fall\u00a0 off.\u00a0 \"\"<\/p>\n

He admitted that his desire to grab the ring and its glory didn’t measure up to his desire to hold on to that horse and escape injury.\u00a0 He cared more about holding on and surviving the ride than he did about grasping the brass ring.\u00a0 \u00a0As the ride spun by and as the horse bounced up and down, he needed need to hold on to that horse with all his might.<\/p>\n

Life has similar spins and bumps.\u00a0 To survive, we need to hang on to something.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Some people\u00a0 hold on by clinging to their possessions, health, or wealth.\u00a0 Others ride through life’s storms by holding on to social media or entertainment.\u00a0 But all of those things are temporary.\u00a0 To forge on ahead in this ride we call “life,” we need something that always lasts.\u00a0 Something that’s strong and sure.<\/p>\n

That something is Jesus!\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Hang On!<\/span><\/em><\/h4>\n

Through prayer, Bible Study, worship and from surrounding ourselves with friends who are on the same path of “hanging on” to Jesus, we can allow God to develop a faith within us.\u00a0 It’s all like that vine that supplies nutrition to the branches.\u00a0 The faith that God instills in us is like a fruit that gives us a constant stream of security and joy.\u00a0 With Jesus, we can hang on.\u00a0 Without Him, we can do nothing.<\/p>\n

Hang on to Jesus in any way you can!<\/p>\n

Pastor Mike made his Pitman Camp Meeting debut on 8\/18\/24 as PUMC hosted the service. In his message, he pointed out that life is like a wild ride in an amusement park. We need to hang on to something that’s secure, strong, and eternal.
