Have mercy on me, O Lord,for I call to you all day long.<\/p>\n<p>4 Bring joy to your servant,for to you, O Lord,I lift up my soul.<\/p>\n<p>5 You are forgiving and good, O Lord,abounding in love to all who call to you. \u00a0 Hear my prayer, O Lord;listen to my cry for mercy. \u00a0 In the day of my trouble I will call to you, for you will answer me.<\/p>\n<p>8 Among the gods there is none like you, O Lord;no deeds can compare with yours.\u00a0 All the nations you have made will come and worship before you, O Lord;they will bring glory to your name.\u00a0 For you are great and do marvelous deeds;you alone are God.<\/p>\n<p>11 Teach me your way, O Lord,and I will walk in your truth; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name.\u00a0 I will praise you, O Lord my God, with all my heart;I will glorify your name forever.\u00a0 For great is your love toward me;you have delivered me from the depths of the grave.\nNIV<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u00a0Nahum 1:7-8<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>7 The Lord is good,\u00a0 a refuge in times of trouble.\u00a0 He cares for those who trust in him,\n8 but with an overwhelming flood he will make an end of [Nineveh];\u00a0 he will pursue his foes into darkness.\nNIV<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">What is Good?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>We frequently hear a pastor shout out, &#8220;God is Good!&#8221;\u00a0 And we then instinctively give the response, &#8220;All the Time!&#8221; and then the pastor will respond, &#8220;All\u00a0 the time,God is Good!&#8221;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>But what does that really mean?<\/em><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>In fact, there are a lot of &#8220;<strong><span style=\"color: #003300;\">God is ____<\/span><\/strong>&#8221; statements.\u00a0 &#8220;God is Good.&#8221;\u00a0 &#8220;God is Holy.&#8221;\u00a0 &#8220;God is Faithful.&#8221;\u00a0 &#8220;God is Love.&#8221;\u00a0 The important thing to keep in mind about all of these things is that they aren&#8217;t statements of the things God does.\u00a0 He doesn&#8217;t just do good, or holy, or faithful things.\u00a0 God IS Holy, Faithful, Good.\u00a0 These aren&#8217;t adjectives that describe things that God does.\u00a0 They are terms that make up God&#8217;s attributes.\u00a0 They overlap.\u00a0 They must be taken together.\u00a0 Each one is a key part of who God is.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-info'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When&#8217;s the last time you heard a sermon on Nahum?!?\u00a0 Here&#8217;s some background on this &#8220;minor prophet&#8221; (he&#8217;s called &#8220;minor&#8221; only because the book is short).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The word Nahum means &#8220;comfort.&#8221;\u00a0 The city in Galilee where Jesus spent so much time is named after Nahum: Capernaum (&#8220;the city of Nahum&#8221;).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Nahum was a on a mission to Nineveh.\u00a0 Some 150 years before his time, Jonah was sent on a mission to this city. God wanted him to call\u00a0Nineveh to repentance.\u00a0 But Nineveh, the capital of the Assyrians,\u00a0 had done much harm to the Israelites and Jonah sure didn&#8217;t want God to show them mercy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But after a detour of running away and getting swallowed by a fish, Jonah gave God&#8217;s message and the people in\u00a0Nineveh repented.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But they relapsed and went back into their sinful ways.\u00a0 Their sin found them out.\u00a0 They went backward instead of forward.\u00a0 So God sent Nahum to give them one more chance.\u00a0 The Babylonians were on their way to attack Nineveh, but &#8220;the Lord is slow to anger,&#8221;\u00a0 and God continues to call to them. In the midst of doom and gloom, there is hope in God.<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n<p>The Bible describes God as a Tower of Strength, and Anchor, a Rock.\u00a0 God wants us to take refuge in Him.\u00a0 Even in our sin and in impending judgement, God wants us to turn to Him.\u00a0 This all comes from His Goodness.\u00a0 Yes He is Holy, but in His Goodness God longs for us to return to Him.\u00a0 The reason He is good to us is so we may repent (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=romans+2%3A4&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\">Romans 2:4<\/a><\/span>).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #003300;\">Romans 11:22&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Consider therefore the kindness and sternness of God: sternness to those who fell, but kindness to you, provided that you continue in his kindness. Otherwise, you also will be cut off. NIV<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>God doesn&#8217;t punish!\u00a0 Sin does!<\/em><\/span><\/h5>\n<p>God doesn&#8217;t stand over us ready at all times to hurl flaming arrows at us.\u00a0 But &#8220;sin will find us out.&#8221;\u00a0 When sin takes us off of God&#8217;s path, we suffer the consequences.\u00a0 But God in His Goodness, still wants us to return.\u00a0 Like Nineveh, God tries to warn us and caution us.\u00a0 Here are some other verses about God&#8217;s Goodness:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Exodus+19%3A9&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\">Exodus 19:9<\/a>\u00a0<\/span> God empowers and helps His servants.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Exodus+33%3A19&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\">Exodus 33:19<\/a><\/span>\u00a0 God is too holy for Moses (or us) to see His face, but He causes His goodness to pass in front of us.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Numbers+10%3A29&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\">Numbers 10:29<\/a><\/span>\u00a0 The Lord has promised good things to Israel.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Psalm+68%3A10&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\">Psalm 68:10<\/a><\/span>\u00a0 God provides for the poor.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Isaiah+63%3A7&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\">Isaiah 63:7<\/a><\/span>\u00a0 Talk about the deeds of compassion and kindness God has shown to Israel.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Four\u00a0 things to remember about Goodness&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">1:\u00a0 God is Good- He Can&#8217;t Do Anything Evil<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&#8220;Good&#8221; is an attribute of God.\u00a0 Because He is &#8220;Good&#8221; there are things that aren&#8217;t part of His character and there are therefore things that God Can&#8217;t do.\u00a0 Humans can lie, but God can&#8217;t!\u00a0 God can&#8217;t cause evil; He didn&#8217;t cause the events of 9\/11.\u00a0 Even if He wanted to, He couldn&#8217;t!\u00a0 God can&#8217;t lie, God can&#8217;t sin&#8230; He can&#8217;t go against His character.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1+John+1%3A5&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\">1 John 1:5<\/a><\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 God is light and in Him there is NO darkness.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Psalm+92%3A15&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\">Psalm 92:15<\/a><\/span>\u00a0 There is NO wickedness in the Lord.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Job+34%3A10&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\">Job 34:10<\/a><\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 &#8220;Far be it&#8221; for God to do any evil.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Nahum+1%3A3&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\">Nahum 1:3<\/a><\/span>\u00a0 says that &#8220;The Lord is slow to anger and great in power.&#8221;\u00a0 The Hebrew word for &#8220;slow to anger&#8221; pictures a bull which is snorting and pawing the ground.\u00a0 There is power, but he doesn&#8217;t charge.\u00a0 He keeps giving warnings.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">2:\u00a0 God&#8217;s Goodness is Evident Everywhere<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>We&#8217;re all surrounded by God&#8217;s goodness as seen in His creation.\u00a0 The world didn&#8217;t have to be this beautiful or intricate.\u00a0 And yet God surrounds us with His amazing creation.\u00a0 In Genesis, after God created each part of the world He said &#8220;It is Good.&#8221; (such as in <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Genesis+1%3A31&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\">Genesis 1:31<\/a><\/span>).<\/p>\n<p>The one thing about this is that we can&#8217;t earn God&#8217;s goodness; God&#8217;s goodness is available to everyone! He just gives it to us, just like a good parent who wants to give what is best to his children.\u00a0 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=psalm+145%3A9&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\">Psalm 145:9<\/a><\/span> says that God is good to all.\u00a0 He has compassion on all He has made.\u00a0 He can&#8217;t help it! It&#8217;s who He is.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">3:\u00a0 The Goodness of God is Personnel<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>We sing, &#8220;God is so good&#8230; He&#8217;s so good to ME.&#8221;\u00a0 Do we really believe that?\u00a0 Can it be that the almighty righteous Holy God of all creation can show goodness to little &#8216;ole me???\u00a0 In the Christian life, God isn&#8217;t calling us to learn a religion; it&#8217;s not about learning how to do good things.\u00a0 Growing as a Christian is about learning to know God; to grow in a relationship with Him.\u00a0 Jesus died for a relationship, not a religion.\u00a0 God is good&#8230; to each of us.<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-shadow'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Close your eyes and think of the times this past week where you have seen the goodness of God.<\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">True story:\u00a0 God can use a dream to give us a warning that can save our lives.\u00a0 <\/span><\/em><\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">God is so good to me&#8230;<\/span><\/em><\/h5>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>If we only have the eyes to see and the ears to hear, we will be able to experience God&#8217;s goodness.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">4:\u00a0 God&#8217;s Goodness Serves as a Model<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>No matter how &#8220;good&#8221; we may think someone is, there is always someone who has even more goodness- Jesus.\u00a0 Paul, in <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=eph+5%3A1&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\">Ephesians 5:1<\/a><\/span> tells us to be &#8220;imitators of God.&#8221;\u00a0 Can we say we imitate God in everything we think, say, and do?\u00a0 What would the world look like if we all made a concerted effort to be an imitator of God?<\/p>\n<p>A special day has been set aside to be &#8220;Random acts of Kindness Day.&#8221;\u00a0 Really????\u00a0 One day???\u00a0 God calls us to be a testimony to His goodness by performing acts of kindness all the time.\u00a0 If a check out person at a convenience store is having a bad day, or if a gas station attendant (we do have them in NJ!) is upset about something, or if a waitress seems worried&#8230; tell them you&#8217;ll pray for them (and then really pray!).\u00a0 Show some empathy and concern.\u00a0 Give thanks when thanks isn&#8217;t expected.<\/p>\n<p>Why? Because the God who saved us&#8230; the one we call &#8220;Lord&#8221;- does the same thing.\u00a0 In <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=3+John+11&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\">3 John 11<\/a><\/span>, the apostle John tells us to imitate what is good, because anyone who does what is good comes from God.\u00a0 If we we return evil for evil or ignore opportunities to do good, then we have not &#8220;seen God.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">How do We Respond to God&#8217;s Goodness???<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>What is it you and I can do to give thanks to God for gifts that we don&#8217;t deserve?<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-info'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The story is told of a doctor who performed an experimental procedure in an effort to save a boy&#8217;s sight.\u00a0 The procedure was expensive and the boy had to be flown to the hospital.\u00a0 So his church and community raised the funds needed for this operation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The boy had a favorite teddy bear; well-worn and tattered.\u00a0 To calm his nerves, the doctor obtained the bear, dressed it in a hospital gown, and made sure it was in the operating room with the boy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">They didn&#8217;t know if the operation was successful until they removed the bandages from the boy&#8217;s eyes.\u00a0 But as the bandages came off, the boy could see the faces of his parents for the first time!\u00a0 And he could also see his beloved teddy bear for the first time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Before leaving the hospital and flying home, the boy wanted to express his deep appreciation to the doctor for restoring his sight.\u00a0 He had nothing of value to offer the doctor, so he gave what was of the most value to him.\u00a0 He gave the doctor his teddy bear.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The doctor protested but the boy insisted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The bear is now in a glass case in the doctor&#8217;s office.\u00a0 Beneath the bear is the sign, &#8220;This is the highest fee I have ever received for professional services rendered.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Goodness begets goodness.<\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<p>How can I say thanks to God?\u00a0 We may only have a stuffed animal, but it&#8217;s like gold to God.<\/p>\n<p>In our sinful states as humans, we can&#8217;t match God&#8217;s goodness.\u00a0 But through His grace, God helps us to grow closer to Him; to become more like Him.\u00a0 By imitating Jesus and by giving our best, we can take on part of God&#8217;s immense goodness and become more like Him.<\/p>\n<p>God is Good!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-shadow'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Quiz Time!<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Just for the fun of it, try out these True\/False questions.\u00a0\u00a0 Don&#8217;t Worry- there&#8217;s no gradebook!\n<\/span><\/p>\n<div id='quizArea'>\n<script type='text\/javascript'>\njQuery(document).ready(function($) {\n$( function($){\nvar quiz = {\ntf:\n[{ ques: 'The statement &#8220;God is Good&#8221; simply means that He does good things.',\nans: false },\n{ ques: 'God cannot lie.',\nans: true },\n{ ques: 'Jesus died in order to start a new religion which we call Christianity.',\nans: false },\n{ ques: 'It&#8217;s impossible to see God&#8217;s goodness when you&#8217;re going through a rough time.',\nans: false },\n{ ques: 'God only wants our best- to love Him with all our heart.',\nans: true }]\n};\nvar options = {\ntitle: 'God is Good',\nhelp: 'True or False?\u00a0 Click &#8220;Review&#8221; when you&#8217;re done to see how you did.',\nshowAns: false,\nshowAnsInfo: false,\nallRandom: false,\nshowFeedback: false,\nrandom: false\n};\nvar lang = {\nquiz : { tfEqual:'' }\n};\n$( '#quizArea' ).jQuizMe( quiz, options, lang );\n$( \".q-innerArea\" ).css( {\"backgroundColor\": \"#EECCAA\", \"color\": \"#222222\"} );\n$( \".quiz-el\" ).css( {\"backgroundColor\": \"#776655\", \"color\": \"#222222\"} );\n$( \".q-ques\" ).css( {\"backgroundColor\": \"#EEEEEE\", \"color\": \"#222222\"} );\n$( \".q-ansSel\" ).css( {\"backgroundColor\": \"#EEEEEE\", \"color\": \"#222222\"} );\n$( \".q-result\" ).css( {\"backgroundColor\": \"#EEEEEE\", \"color\": \"#222222\"} );\n});\n}(jQuery))\n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When you&#8217;re done, click the &#8220;Review&#8221; button to see the right answers.\u00a0 If you missed any questions, re-read the scripture and try it again.\u00a0 If you&#8217;re stuck (or disagree with the answer!), feel free to post a comment.<\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">God is Good..
