{"id":32471,"date":"2023-09-30T15:24:45","date_gmt":"2023-09-30T19:24:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/?p=32471"},"modified":"2024-04-13T16:01:31","modified_gmt":"2024-04-13T20:01:31","slug":"pumc-to-help-provide-a-ray-of-life-october-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/?p=32471","title":{"rendered":"PUMC to Help Provide a Ray of Life (October 2023)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Several years ago, a freak storm hit our area, knocking out power for most people in Pitman and surrounding communities.\u00a0 Refrigerators stopped running, and food was lost.\u00a0 Sump pumps went quiet and basements flooded.\u00a0 And it was dark.\u00a0 When night came, we had to resort to candles and flashlights.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The saving grace is that the outage only lasted less than a week.\u00a0 And, it occurred in the Spring when the temperatures were moderate and heating and air conditioning wasn&#8217;t needed.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">But imagine a different situation where the power outage lasts for months or years? Imagine living in a war zone?\u00a0 Imagine living in Ukraine?\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Lights<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Without electricity, many things are difficult or impossible, and even life threatening.\u00a0 Perhaps the most frustrating challenge that&#8217;s constantly encountered is darkness.\u00a0 Without electricity, you must resort to flashlights and candles.\u00a0 Everywhere you go, you need to carry a flashlight.\u00a0 But what do you do when the flashlight&#8217;s batteries die?\u00a0 In our own experience, power outages only last a few hours or a couple of days at worst.\u00a0 Flashlight batteries won&#8217;t wear out before the emergency is over.\u00a0 But imagine being in a war zone.\u00a0 Where are you going to buy new batteries when the flashlight goes dark?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Making a Ray of Life<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Several months ago, Pastor Jim alerted us to an article that appeared on the website for the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.minnesotaumc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Minnesota Annual Conference<\/a> <\/span>of the United Methodist Church.\u00a0 It was entitled &#8220;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.minnesotaumc.org\/newsdetail\/delivering-light-and-hope-to-ukraine-17409298?mkt_tok=MDc4LUpYUS02NDMAAAGLgixUiG5xVFi_MyBWmyBSvCHI90vYtHHauQrr5EITN0iTyXb8ul3fHcbTQC2xvuFeZgM38eGXn3txAsqvgJfBUWaXoUyKPhT0o_m5MWO7mLSLzg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Delivering Hope and Light to Ukraine<\/a><\/span>.&#8221;\u00a0 \u00a0The article describes the experience of Minnesota resident Dave Nonnemacher who developed a passion for Eastern European people as part of his efforts with an organization called <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/newhorizonsevs.wordpress.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New Horizons Foundation<\/a><\/span>.\u00a0 Guided by a passion for children and motivated by the suffering and devastation of the war, Dave resolved to do something to help.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Understanding the difficulties resulting from the damaged electrical grid, Dave embraced a ministry of supplying lights to Ukrainians living in the damaged areas.\u00a0 These battery powered lights include a solar panel which can be used to charge the battery during the day so that it will provide light during the night.\u00a0 The units also include a port for charging cell phones.\u00a0 The lights are about the size of a cereal box.\u00a0 Thanks to a recent upgrade in in the design, the battery can now provide over 20 hours of light on a single charge!\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-info'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The ministry of creating the lights and delivering them to Ukraine, is spearheaded by an organization called <span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #000080;\"><a style=\"color: #000080; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nvre.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New Vision Renewable Energy<\/a><\/span>. They designed the lights have been delivering them in several countries, including Ukraine.\u00a0 So far, they have delivered over 175 Ray of Life Solar lights and 200 water filter units to Ukrainians (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline; light.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Light for Refugees, Built by Refugees<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The Ray of Life light was designed by John Prusa, a refugee who emigrated from communist Romania in the 1970s.\u00a0 John passed away in March of 2023, but his legacy will continue to shine. Dave&#8217;s trip to Ukraine to deliver his church&#8217;s lights occurred three days after John&#8217;s passing.\u00a0 Surely the Lord&#8217;s hand is in this ministry!<\/p>\n<p>John was an electrical engineer, and until his death, he served as the director of R&amp;D for New Vision Renewable Energy.\u00a0 The lights that we donate will be assembled by students in a High School in Minneapolis, MN.\u00a0 This school,\u00a0 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lincolnihs.org\/about-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lincoln International High School<\/a>,<\/span> is not a &#8220;normal&#8221; public High School.\u00a0 It is a charter school whose students come mostly from culturally diverse backgrounds.\u00a0 The people assembling these light kits come from places such as Ethiopia, Uganda, Iraq, Kuwait, and Somalia.<\/p>\n<p>It is fitting that this project to help people who are fleeing the ravages of war is guided by people who were refugees themselves.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">PUMC to Offer Rays of Life<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Our Missions Team has decided to participate in the Ray of Life effort by sponsoring light kits.\u00a0 We are raising money which will be used to &#8220;sponsor&#8221; light kits, which will be purchased through New Vision Renewable Energy and assembled in Minnesota.\u00a0 The lights will be taken to Ukraine and placed in the hands of the people who need them.\u00a0 Our goal is to collect enough donations to sponsor at least 10 light kits by the end of October.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Any left over donations will be used for another project helping Ukrainians:\u00a0 Water Filters.\u00a0 The war not only shuts off electricity, but it also reduces the availability of clean drinking water.\u00a0 New Vision Renewable Energy is also working to provide needy Ukrainians with water filters.<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-bio'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If you wish to participate, here are the details:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">DONTAION<\/span><\/strong>:\u00a0 The amount is totally up to you.\u00a0 You can entirely sponsor a light kit or give any donation of any amount to the project.\n<p><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">COST<\/span><\/strong>: You don&#8217;t have to fully sponsor a light, but each light kit costs $125.\u00a0\u00a0\n<p><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">CHECKS<\/span><\/strong>:\u00a0 You can write a check to &#8220;Pitman United Methodist Church&#8221;
