What were you doing on Monday, February 6 2023 at 4:17AM?\u00a0 For most of us, that is actually a pretty easy question:\u00a0 we were sound asleep!\u00a0 But imagine waking up at 4:17AM by a thunderous rumble?\u00a0 Imagine being buried by pieces of your ceiling moments after being awaken?\u00a0 \u00a0Imagine being trapped under the rubble for days, wondering if you or your loved ones will ever survive?<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Most of us have never experienced this.\u00a0 For most of us, the above scenes of horror take a lot of imagination to even begin to comprehend…\u00a0 \"\"<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

But this exactly what happened to the people of Turkey and Syria during those frightful moments.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n

We don’t understand suffering, pain, and death.\u00a0 Why did this happen?\u00a0 How could a loving God allow this to happen?\u00a0 We don’t and we can’t understand.\u00a0 All we can do is trust.\u00a0 When we see others undergoing tragedy like this when we have been spared, God calls us to act.\u00a0 It IS in His character to love.\u00a0 Jesus is the Good Shepherd, and to become like Him, we must take on His character of unlimited love.<\/p>\n

UMCOR…<\/span><\/h3>\n

UMCOR stands for “The United Methodist Committee on Relief.<\/a>”\u00a0 It’s not exactly an inspiring name, but because of UMCOR, we in Pitman can help those in Turkey.\u00a0 When a tragedy like this strikes, wherever in the world,\u00a0 UMCOR quickly steps in to fund and organize relief efforts.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Already,\u00a0 UMCOR is providing relief to the survivors of this earthquake.\u00a0 Partnering with the International Blue Crescent, UMCOR is working to provide needs such as shelters, hot meals, and clothing.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

We Can Help!<\/span><\/h3>\n

Most of us aren’t able to put our lives on hold and travel to Syria.\u00a0 Most of us don’t have the ability or knowledge to help.\u00a0 But what we can do is to provide financial assistance through UMCOR.\u00a0 \"\"<\/p>\n

On two Sundays (2\/19\/23 and 2\/26\/29) we will be taking a special offering to help UMCOR help people in Turkey and Syria.\u00a0 All of UMCOR’s overhead is already paid for (by a special offering on “UMCOR Sunday”… which is on March 19 this year).\u00a0 So, ALL of your gifts will go directly to the relief efforts.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

If you’re not going to be at the church on those dates, you can use our online Giving system.\u00a0 Click the below button and designate your gift to the “UMCOR – Benevolence Fund.”\u00a0 All of your gift will go to UMCOR to help with this relief effort (if you use a credit card, the online payment system will deduct a small fee).\u00a0 Give<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n
