For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">6 Then one of the seraphs flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7 With it he touched my mouth and said, &#8220;See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, &#8220;Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And I said, &#8220;Here am I. Send me!&#8221;<\/span>\nNIV<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Having the right answers matters.\u00a0 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1+Peter+3%3A15&amp;version=NLT\" target=\"_blank\">1 Peter 3:15<\/a><\/span> says that we should always be prepared to give an answer to anyone for the hope we have.\u00a0 Why are you a Christian?\u00a0 And so, if someone asked you &#8220;What does it mean when the Bible says that God is holy?&#8221;, would you have an answer?\u00a0 We believe in a Holy God&#8230; what does that mean?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Holy Scene&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In this passage, we get a glimpse of what God&#8217;s holiness is.\u00a0 King Uzziah (see <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=2+chron+26&amp;version=NLT\" target=\"_blank\">2 Chronicles 26<\/a><\/span>) was the last king in Judah who followed the Lord.\u00a0 After that,\u00a0 it was all downhill.\u00a0 Isaiah lived during the time of King Uzziah, so when Uzziah died it was a big deal for a righteous man like Isaiah.\u00a0 The king is gone- who&#8217;s going to be in charge?\u00a0 Who is going to prevent the country from slipping back into the idolatry that it had kept throughout most of its history?\u00a0 Isaiah was worried, and he goes into the temple to pray.<\/p>\n<p>God answers his prayers by showing him a vision of His Holiness. Isaiah got to see the Lord.\u00a0 He saw God high and lifted up- high above sin, worry, and trouble.\u00a0 And so we have a scene of of God sitting on a huge throne surrounded by angels and seraphs.\u00a0 Isaiah realizes that he can&#8217;t measure up to this scene; he doesn&#8217;t belong here!\u00a0 But God acknowledges his humility and symbolically cleans him with the burning coals.<\/p>\n<p>This isn&#8217;t the only place in the bible where we see scenes like this which speak of God&#8217;s holiness.\u00a0 Take a look at the following passages; they&#8217;re all describing how God is holy.\u00a0 Like Isaiah, we must recognize that we are people with &#8220;unclean lips&#8221; and be humble in His presence&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Revelation+4%3A2-8&amp;version=NLT\" target=\"_blank\">Revelation 4:2-8<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=2+Corinthians+12%3A1-4&amp;version=NLT\" target=\"_blank\">2 Corinthians 12:1-4<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1+Kings+22%3A19&amp;version=NLT\" target=\"_blank\">1 Kings 22:19<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John+12%3A37-43&amp;version=NLT\" target=\"_blank\">John 12:37-43<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Hope&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Once Isaiah realized that God wasn&#8217;t a weak person like himself, he had hope. God isn&#8217;t one who must go back to the drawing board and consult with His colleagues.\u00a0 He doesn&#8217;t have any equals to consult with!\u00a0 Isaiah got a glimpse of God&#8217;s holiness, awesomeness, and beauty,\u00a0 and he knew that there was a future.\u00a0 God&#8217;s in control; He&#8217;s got it all in the palm of His hand.<\/p>\n<p>Could it be that God is telling us, &#8220;don&#8217;t worry. We&#8217;ve got this thing licked.&#8221;\u00a0 We serve a God who is bigger than any circumstance in our lives.\u00a0 Paul tells us in <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=2+cor+4%3A17&amp;version=NLT\" target=\"_blank\">2 Corinthians 4:17<\/a> <\/span>that our &#8220;little troubles&#8221; in this life are getting us ready for something far better when we see God&#8217;s glory.\u00a0 These little troubles will seem like nothing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Holy, Holy, Holy&#8230; <\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Holiness is the essential part of God&#8217;s character.\u00a0 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=ps+99&amp;version=NLT\" target=\"_blank\">Psalm 99<\/a><\/span> tells us to praise His awesome Name because He is holy.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Amos+4%3A2&amp;version=NLT\" target=\"_blank\">Amos 4:2<\/a><\/span> God &#8220;swears by His holiness.&#8221;\u00a0 God will keep every promise that He ever makes.<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-bio'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> Can you describe for me what holiness means? <\/span><\/p>\n<address><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(Cue the Jeopardy theme&#8230;)<\/span><\/address><\/div><\/div>\n<p>Holiness is the backdrop for all that God does.\u00a0 God is love, but it wouldn&#8217;t happen without His holiness (notice that the seraphs sing &#8220;Holy, Holy, Holy&#8221;, not &#8220;Love, Love, Love.&#8221;)\u00a0 God&#8217;s holiness demands that we also be holy (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=lev+19&amp;version=NLT\" target=\"_blank\">Lev. 19:1<\/a><\/span>).\u00a0 Holiness demands justice, and this justice was met by Christ&#8217;s sacrifice on the cross.\u00a0 God&#8217;s Love wouldn&#8217;t be evident without His holiness.\u00a0 Without holiness, there&#8217;s no need for grace or mercy, and we wouldn&#8217;t know God&#8217;s love.\u00a0 Without the holiness of God, there would be a lot of gaps in scripture.\u00a0 Everything comes out of God&#8217;s holiness.<\/p>\n<p>So we are called to practice holiness every day of our lives.\u00a0 What we say we have on the inside has to be seen on the outside.\u00a0 If we hold sin in our hearts, God will not hear our prayers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The word &#8220;to be Holy&#8221; comes from a Hebrew word meaning &#8220;the essential nature of that which <a href=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Holy-Matchbox-Cars-_IMG_0689.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3117\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Holy-Matchbox-Cars-_IMG_0689-300x182.jpg\" alt=\"Holy- Matchbox Cars _IMG_0689\" width=\"300\" height=\"182\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Holy-Matchbox-Cars-_IMG_0689-300x182.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Holy-Matchbox-Cars-_IMG_0689-178x108.jpg 178w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Holy-Matchbox-Cars-_IMG_0689-132x79.jpg 132w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Holy-Matchbox-Cars-_IMG_0689.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>belongs to the sphere of the sacred, and which is thus distinct from the common.&#8221;\u00a0 The literal meaning means to cut, or to separate.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, to be &#8220;Holy&#8221; means that we&#8217;re to be separated (or &#8220;cut away&#8221; ) from the World&#8217;s sinful ways so that we can be with God.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-warning'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> Even though we are surrounded by the Holy Spirit and the Holy Spirit holds us back from sin, we are still sinful in many ways. We miss the mark.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Imagine what the world would be like without the Holy Spirit; without absolutes, without a church striving to be holy.\u00a0 Take a look at the book of Judges (especially chapters 19-21)!\u00a0 Everyone did what was right in their own eyes; it wasn&#8217;t a good situation.\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">God is holy.\u00a0 We can&#8217;t dabble in sin and walk with Christ.\u00a0 Instead we must avoid sin and yield to God&#8217;s sanctifying grace and be molded into His image.<\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>\u00a0Can you describe what Holiness means?\u00a0 How can we wrap our head around it?\u00a0\u00a0 Here are three things to remember:<\/em><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u00a01:\u00a0 God&#8217;s Holiness is Incomparable<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>There&#8217;s no way to compare God to anything else.\u00a0 You can&#8217;t measure Him in any way.\u00a0 Instead,\u00a0 He is the standard.\u00a0 God is the measuring stick.\u00a0 So in order to &#8220;measure up&#8221; and to remain on the path of becoming more like Him, we must understand Holiness.\u00a0 The Bible refers to holiness more than any other of God&#8217;s attributes (take a look at\u00a0 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=ex+15%3A11&amp;version=NLT\" target=\"_blank\">Exodus 15:11<\/a><\/span>, or <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1+sam+2%3A2&amp;version=NLT\" target=\"_blank\">1 Samuel 2:2<\/a><\/span> for just two examples).\u00a0 God is unique; don&#8217;t try to compare Him to anything else.<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-warning'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Barometer:- Ask yourself:\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Do I look more like God now than I did at this time last year?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We need to conform to God, not to our image of what we think we should be.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t compare yourselves to others; the Measuring Stick is Jesus.\u00a0 Are we growing closer to Him?\u00a0 Holiness is a journey, but it&#8217;s a journey in grace.\u00a0 God looks at us, sees Jesus and Jesus says, &#8220;it&#8217;s ok&#8230; he&#8217;s one of mine.&#8221;<\/span>\u00a0<\/div><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">2:\u00a0 God&#8217;s Holiness Cannot Tolerate Sin<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>God&#8217;s holiness cannot tolerate sin- and neither should we.\u00a0 When we tolerate sin, we&#8217;re just asking for trouble.\u00a0 Would anyone put on a white wedding gown and walk into a dusty coal mine?\u00a0 The reality of holiness is that it calls us to stop dabbling in sin and instead and strive to keep &#8220;clean.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>God called David &#8220;a man after His own heart.&#8221;\u00a0 And yet, David&#8217;s sin with Bathsheba couldn&#8217;t be swept under the rug.\u00a0 David &#8220;displeased the Lord&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=2+sam+11%3A27&amp;version=NLT\" target=\"_blank\">2 Samuel 11:27<\/a>).\u00a0 If even David could displease God, what about us?\u00a0 God doesn&#8217;t average things out or look on the periphery.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=luke+16%3A15&amp;version=NLT\" target=\"_blank\">Luke 16:15<\/a> tells us that God looks\u00a0 into the heart and has higher standards.\u00a0 We may focus on some little things that we think are good, but God digs deeper into the motives and views the things we value as detestable.<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-warning'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Who are WE trying to please?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Life on earth lasts maybe 80 or 90 years; after we die, life with God is an eternity.\u00a0 So why do we put so much into pleasing other people during our short time on earth instead of daring to be different and pleasing God?\u00a0 Eliminating sin from our own lives may stress or even break our earthly relationships.\u00a0 But we shouldn&#8217;t tolerate sin in our lives- our eternal relationship with God is far more important.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Being &#8220;sanctified&#8221; or moving towards being &#8220;holy&#8221; means that we need to cut off and separate ourselves from the sinful ways that pull us away from God instead of drawing us towards Him.<\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John+3%3A16&amp;version=NLT\" target=\"_blank\">John 3:16<\/a><\/span> is God&#8217;s holiness at work.\u00a0 God didn&#8217;t hit &#8220;delete.&#8221;\u00a0 God didn&#8217;t take the eraser to the chalkboard.\u00a0\u00a0 God said that &#8220;My holiness demands that I pay the penalty, but also love you and save you.&#8221;\u00a0 Awesome!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">3:\u00a0 God&#8217;s Holiness is to be Imitated<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>John Wesley talked about &#8220;Inward Holiness&#8221; and &#8220;Outward Holiness. (<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.asbury.edu\/about-us\/cornerstone-project\/holiness-initiatives\/wesleyan-holiness-theology\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000; text-decoration: underline;\">This Article<\/span><\/span><\/a>, especially the Third Point which discusses Inward &amp; Outward holiness)<\/em><\/span>. \u00a0 But are we striving to allow the &#8220;Inward Holiness&#8221; that the Holy Spirit builds within us to be transformed into the &#8220;Outward Holiness&#8221; that can be seen by everyone?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hebrews 12:14 says &#8220;Make every effort to live in peace with all men and to be holy;\u00a0 without holiness no one will see the Lord.&#8221;\u00a0 In other words, no compromise; no watering down.\u00a0 Stay faithful to the God who has called us.<\/li>\n<li>1 Peter 1:15 says &#8220;but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But- the Beautiful Thing is:\u00a0 The One who calls us to be holy, also gives us the &#8220;Manual&#8221; to be holy (the Bible),\u00a0 and the support we need to be holy, the protection to remain holy; and will be with us- Himself- to teach us and guide us and show us.\u00a0 Awesome!!!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">==========<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">WE are Called to Be a Holy Generation&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Christ puts a hedge of protection around us so that we can remain holy and true to God.\u00a0 It&#8217;s time for Christians around the world to use that power and protection, march forward, and stop looking to be fair weather Christian-ettes.\u00a0 God has called US to be a holy generation.\u00a0 And He&#8217;s called us to be holy for a time such as this (see<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Esther+4%3A12-14&amp;version=NLT\" target=\"_blank\">Esther 4:12-14<\/a><\/span>).<\/p>\n<p>Do we compromise with the world?\u00a0 Does our manner of speech change depending on the friends we&#8217;re hanging around?\u00a0\u00a0 Can the things you say at work on Monday be said in church on Sunday?
