(5\/25\/22)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">A United Methodist couple in Hannibal MO has embraced the ministry of visitation with a unique way of outreach. \u00a0 They stand about 2 feet high, weigh 165 pounds, have long fluffy hair, and their names are Ranger and Odin.\u00a0 And, they walk on four feet!\u00a0 <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Yep- a pair of big fluffy dogs is involved the visitation ministry of this Missouri district.\u00a0 Ranger and Odin are accompanied by Bob and Sue Mitchell, Lay Servants from Hannibal MO.\u00a0 The story was told in a recent article which was posted on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moumethodist.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a> for the Missouri Conference of the United Methodist Church.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Ice&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Imagine that you&#8217;re a kid going to church one Sunday when your parents &#8220;encourage&#8221; you to answer the pastor&#8217;s invitation to come forward during the Children&#8217;s Sermon.\u00a0 You&#8217;re nervous and would rather stay in your pew rather than to be seen by the whole congregation. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-30736 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/FluffyDogMinistry-02-_400x300-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/FluffyDogMinistry-02-_400x300-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/FluffyDogMinistry-02-_400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Or imagine being a nursing home resident and some &#8220;stranger&#8221; from &#8220;outside&#8221; comes into your world to visit you.\u00a0 You don&#8217;t know them and you&#8217;re probably a bit suspicious that their motives might be more to serve their own conscience than to serve you.\u00a0 And imagine that you&#8217;re the person who is visiting that nursing home.\u00a0 You&#8217;re thinking about what to say and worrying about what not to say.<\/p>\n<p>In any case, the initial introduction is a bit frosty.\u00a0 The ice needs to be broken.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Ice Broken&#8230;<br \/>\n<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>But as you approach the front of the sanctuary, you&#8217;re greeted by a big huggable dog.\u00a0 Dogs in church?\u00a0 Or as you&#8217;re wheeled into the room to meet the visitors, you&#8217;re greeted by a creature resembling an enormous teddy bear?\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-30735\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/FluffyDogMinistry-01-_400x300-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/FluffyDogMinistry-01-_400x300-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/FluffyDogMinistry-01-_400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Welcome to Ranger and Odin!<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ranger and Odin, two <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Newfoundland_dog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Newfoundland dogs<\/a>, accompany Bill and Sue Mitchell when they visit nursing homes and churches as part of their Certified\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gnjumc.org\/leadership-academy\/lay-servant-ministries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lay Servant<\/a> ministry.\u00a0\u00a0 A wagging tail begging to be petted lightens up the mode.\u00a0 You don&#8217;t have to worry about how you look as you sit on the floor in front of the pastor; everyone is watching the dog.\u00a0 It&#8217;s hard to be suspicious of visitors when their lovable dog is greeting you.\u00a0 And if you&#8217;re a visiting Lay Speaker, you don&#8217;t have to worry about what to say; the dogs give the introduction.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">=======================<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Using Any Means&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>John Wesley (the founder of what is now known at the United Methodist Church) said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\">&#8220;Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Jesus (the Founder of Everything!) frequently used the surrounding environment as a means to teach people.\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\n<li>He once taught a crowd on a hillside by a lake and described the special care God has for &#8220;lilies of the valley&#8221; even though they don&#8217;t &#8220;labor or spin&#8230; yet God clothes them,&#8221; and He will likewise take care of us (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=mt+6%3A25-34&amp;version=CEB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Matthew\u00a06:25-34<\/a>). \u00a0<\/li>\n<li>On another occasion He walked along the shoreline of the lake calling people to discipleship.\u00a0 He told a pair of fishermen that He was inviting them to become &#8220;fishers of men&#8221; (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Mark%201%3A16%2D18&amp;version=CEB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mark\u00a01:16-18<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>He met with a women who was drawing water from a well and used the opportunity to tell her about forgiveness and a &#8220;water of life&#8221; that will never run dry (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=jn+4%3A4-26&amp;version=CEB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John\u00a04:1-26<\/a>).\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-30737\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/FluffyDogMinistry-04b-_400x300-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/FluffyDogMinistry-04b-_400x300-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/FluffyDogMinistry-04b-_400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To share our life&#8217;s story, we need to recognize the life&#8217;s story of those around us.\u00a0 To share the love of God, we have to &#8220;think outside the box&#8221; and use any means available.\u00a0 Showing God&#8217;s love doesn&#8217;t have to happen in a church building. Sometimes the reality of God&#8217;s love gets smothered up in a lot of cliche and &#8220;church talk.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Jesus wants us to be witnesses and to share God&#8217;s love (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Acts+1%3A7-8&amp;version=CEB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Acts\u00a01:7-8<\/a>).\u00a0 Jesus spoke to people using illustrations of lilies, fishermen, or wells to relate to those He met.\u00a0 In the same way, the Mitchells are using their big furry dogs to communicate the love of God with those they meet.
