Austin Miles penned what would eventually become known (in Pitman!)\u00a0 as &#8220;the Pitman Anthem.&#8221; Miles lived in Pitman, and it is believed that he wrote this famous hymn during his time in our town (although that point is debatable).<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">But what is for sure is that the hymn &#8220;In the Garden&#8221; speaks of an enduring relationship between God and His children.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The pandemic forced us to find new ways of community while maintaining physical distance from each other.\u00a0 During this time, we developed an agility with technology that allowed us to meet virtually.\u00a0 In June of 2021, PUMC&#8217;er Bob Bazzel and his daughter Abigail Marmelstein used their musical and computer skills to assemble a virtual choir to sing &#8220;In the Garden.&#8221;\u00a0 About 14 people recorded their voices while singing along with an instrumental rendition.\u00a0 The resulting audio files were merged together and graphic slides were created.\u00a0 The result is the below video rendition of &#8220;Pitman&#8217;s In The Garden.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-shadow'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Pitman UMC&#039;s Virtual Choir Sings &quot;In the Garden&quot; (7\/4\/21)\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lGiG0aciUxY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Mary&#8217;s Garden<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In this song, C. Austin Miles depicts the experience of Mary Magdalene on the first Easter morning as she goes to the tomb to anoint Jesus&#8217; body.\u00a0\u00a0 She goes in fear, confusion, and in mourning.\u00a0 As she arrives, she sees that the big stone has been rolled away from the tomb&#8217;s entrance.\u00a0 Angels are there to explain.\u00a0 Then, she hears what she supposes to be the gardener behind her.\u00a0 She asks the gardener where the body has been taken, but the &#8220;gardener&#8221; simply speaks her name: &#8220;<em><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Mary&#8230;<\/span><\/strong><\/em>&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2842 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Windows-Ressurrection-239x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"239\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Windows-Ressurrection-239x300.jpg 239w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Windows-Ressurrection-816x1024.jpg 816w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Windows-Ressurrection.jpg 1155w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 239px) 100vw, 239px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With the mention of her name, Mary&#8217;s fears are turned to love and wonder.\u00a0 Mary realizes that Jesus is with her.\u00a0 In the quiet of that garden, her relationship with God bursts into her conscious and she can think of nothing else.\u00a0 &#8220;<em><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Mary&#8230;<\/span><\/strong><\/em>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p>The account is told in <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=jn+20%3A10-16&amp;version=NLT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John 20:10-16<\/a><\/span> (and depicted on the &#8220;Resurrection Window&#8221; which is at the front of our sanctuary).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Other Gardens<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&#8220;<em><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Mary&#8230;<\/span><\/strong><\/em>&#8221;\u00a0 Her whole attitude and demeanor was transformed simply by hearing the Lord speak her name.\u00a0 In the quiet morning of a garden, near an empty tomb, she felt the comforting presence of God.\u00a0 Throughout scripture, we see examples of God turning seemingly ordinary moments into uplifting encounters with Himself.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t<div class='tabs-left et_sliderfx_fade et_sliderauto_false et_sliderauto_speed_4444 et_slidertype_left_tabs clearfix'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='et_left_tabs_bg'><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<ul class='et-tabs-control'>\n\t\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tDining Room\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tCave\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tBeach\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tBack Yard\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tGilgal\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tGalilee\n\t\t<\/a><\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul> <!-- .et-tabs-control --> \n\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content'>\n\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-main-wrap'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-wrapper'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=jn+12%3A1-8&amp;version=NLT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John 12:1-8<\/a><\/span> \u00a0 Jesus came over for dinner.\u00a0 While her sister Martha was busy making dinner, Mary took a few moments to spend some quiet moments anointing Jesus&#8217; feet. \u00a0 Mary knew that time was running out; she wouldn&#8217;t have many more opportunities to be with Jesus.\u00a0 But Martha was in a rush.\u00a0 She was busy in the kitchen instead of &#8220;the garden.&#8221;\n\t\t<\/div><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=jn+12%3A1-8&amp;version=NLT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">1 Kings 19:1-13<\/a><\/span> \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 Elijah had just been in the center of a huge miracle.\u00a0 At Elijah&#8217;s request, God sent fire from heaven to accept Elijah&#8217;s offering, while burning up the prophets of Baal to reject their offering.\u00a0 After that, God answered Elijah&#8217;s prayer by sending rain to end a drought.\u00a0 But the queen wanted to take revenge on Elijah, so Elijah fled in fear.\u00a0 He ended up in a cave, far far away from the limelight (and from Queen Jezebel).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He cried out before God.\u00a0 He was depressed, afraid, and needed encouragement.\u00a0 In the quiet of his &#8220;garden&#8221; (a cave), God answered Ejilah with a &#8220;still, small voice.&#8221;\u00a0\n\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=jn+21%3A1-14&amp;version=NLT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John 21:1-14<\/a><\/span> \u00a0 Jesus had been crucified.\u00a0 And even though the disciples saw Him alive in Jerusalem, they became confused.\u00a0 So they returned to what they knew best: fishing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the &#8220;garden&#8221; of these familiar surroundings, they saw Jesus.\u00a0 Jesus miraculously prepared breakfast for His disciples on the beach.\u00a0 In the quiet of this &#8220;garden&#8221;, they rediscovered the Lord and found encouragement and forgiveness.\n\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=ps+8%3A1-4&amp;version=NLT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Psalm 8:1-4<\/span><\/a> \u00a0\u00a0 David didn&#8217;t have a telescope, but he was able to step out into the quiet of a still night and marvel at the stars.\u00a0 What he saw inspired him to write this Psalm.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We can be inspired by the night sky too, but how often are we too busy, too tired, or too distracted to notice the wonder of God&#8217;s Creation? David&#8217;s &#8220;garden&#8221; was to gaze into the sky on a quiet evening and then to ponder the wonders of our Creator-God who is big enough to create the whole universe and yet &#8220;small&#8221; enough to notice us.\n\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1+sam+12%3A6-23&amp;version=NLT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">I Samuel 12:6-23<\/a><\/span> \u00a0 The Israelites were worried.\u00a0 They were surrounded by enemies and they were afraid, and so they asked for a king.\u00a0 The prophet Samuel called them together and led them to bring their worries into a &#8220;garden&#8221;&#8230; the &#8220;garden&#8221; of remembering what God had done for them.\u00a0 Yes, they had done wrong by asking for an earthly king, but Samuel reminded them that God was always ready to forgive. He is always by your side if your heart turns to Him and if you&#8217;re ready to be quiet and listen.\u00a0\n\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=mk+6%3A30-31&amp;version=NLT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mark 6:30-31<\/a><\/span>\u00a0\u00a0 Jesus had paired off His disciples and sent them out to go from village to village and preach repentance to the people.\u00a0 The disciples had just returned from the trip and they had a lot of things they wanted to tell Jesus.\u00a0 But the crowds all wanted Jesus&#8217; attention.\u00a0 The day was busy and noisy.\u00a0 So Jesus led His disciples to &#8220;a quiet place.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Maybe they went up into the hillside.\u00a0 Maybe they found the home of a friend.\u00a0 Maybe they pushed off into a boat.\u00a0 But whatever it was, even Jesus needed a &#8220;garden&#8221; so that His disciples could speak to Him and listen to Him.\u00a0<\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div> <!-- .tabs-left -->\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>\u00a0<\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Where&#8217;s YOUR Garden?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Where are YOUR quiet and ordinary moments?\u00a0 Samuel reminded the people that &#8220;useless idols can do no good&#8221; and he challenged the people to &#8220;consider what great things God has done for you.&#8221; (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1+sam12%3A21-24&amp;version=NLT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">1 Samuel 12:21-24<\/a><\/span>).\u00a0 It&#8217;s so easy to get caught up in our &#8220;to-do&#8221; lists and to get wrapped up in the noise that comes when we focus on satisfying our desires.\u00a0 We so easily chase after &#8220;idols&#8221; and we find it hard to slow down to listen for the quiet voice of God&#8230; &#8220;<strong><em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Mary&#8230;<\/span><\/em><\/strong>&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>To hear that re-assuring and powerful voice of God, find a quiet place.\u00a0 It might be on a beach or in a fishing boat.\u00a0 It might be during or a walk around your neighborhood, or a drive through the countryside.\u00a0 It might be in the quiet morning moments during prayer or scripture reading, or it might be in the sanctuary surrounded by your church family.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>C.
