(Camp Meeting, 8\/25\/19)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Before entering the ministry, Pastor Bret Walker was a life-long member of Pitman United Methodist Church.\u00a0 Like many of us, he felt the touch of Jesus&#8217; touch salvation in his life.\u00a0 Like some of us, he felt a call to enter professional ministry, and he became a local pastor.\u00a0 He is currently the pastor of two churches:\u00a0 The<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.faithstreet.com\/church\/hudson-united-methodist-church-pedricktown-nj-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hudson UMC <\/a>( in Pedricktown) ,\u00a0 and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.faithstreet.com\/church\/ebenezer-united-methodist-church-auburn-nj\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ebenezer UMC<\/a> ( in Auburn).<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-21989\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/CMP19-08-25-Bret-Walker-_IMG_2806-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/CMP19-08-25-Bret-Walker-_IMG_2806-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/CMP19-08-25-Bret-Walker-_IMG_2806.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Before entering the ministry, Bret lived in Pitman and was a regular attender of the Pitman Camp Meeting services.\u00a0 He developed a love for the &#8220;old time gospel music&#8221; that is sung from our Camp Meeting hymnals.\u00a0 He also developed an awe for the history of the Camp Meeting; to stand in the same place where Billy Sunday once preached and C. Austin Miles once sang is like standing on hallowed ground.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">As a pastor and speaker, Bret brings his love of Jesus, connection with music, and respect for heritage to the pulpit.\u00a0 All of this was present when Pastor Bret brought us his witness in music and word on Sunday 8\/25\/19.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Music&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In the Pitman Camp Meeting tradition, the speaker&#8217;s church is designated as the &#8220;Host Church&#8221; and they supply the special music for the service.\u00a0 In this case, Bret, with his voice and ukulele, provided the worship through music.\u00a0 He opened the service with the 1858 hymn &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/hymnary.org\/text\/i_gave_my_life_for_thee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">I Gave My Life for Thee<\/a>&#8220;, and then moved into some more familiar songs:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/hymnary.org\/text\/brightly_beams_our_fathers_mercy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Let the Lower Lights be Burning<\/a>&#8221; (<span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><em>see the video below&#8230;<\/em><\/span>)<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/hymnary.org\/text\/when_upon_lifes_billows_you_are_tempest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Count Your Blessings<\/a>&#8220;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hymntime.com\/tch\/htm\/h\/i\/s\/e\/hiseyeis.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">His Eye is on the Sparrow<\/a>&#8220;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As the last hymn says, &#8220;we sing because we&#8217;re happy.\u00a0 We sing because we&#8217;re free&#8230;&#8221;\u00a0 It was a perfect segue into his message.<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-shadow'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><p><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;Let the Lower Lights Be Burning&#8221; was written by Phillip Bliss and published in 1871.\u00a0 It was also recorded by Johnny Cash in 1962. Here&#8217;s Pastor Bret&#8217;s rendition&#8230;<\/span> <\/em><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Bret Walker Sings at Pitman Camp Meeting, 8\/25\/19\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DvAYQgHaKUE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Word&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>We humans like to talk about a lot of things.\u00a0 We gather around the water cooler, facebook wall, and church narthex and we talk about things like sports, vacations, and fast food restaurants.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">&#8220;<em><span style=\"color: #993300;\">What do you think of Andrew Luck&#8217;s decision to retire as the Colt&#8217;s quarterback?\u00a0 He was in the prime of his career&#8230;.\u00a0 And what about Popeye&#8217;s?\u00a0 Have you tried their new sandwich?&#8230; \u00a0 And here&#8217;s a selfie of us at McDonalds, eating a big mac&#8230;<\/span><\/em>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s easy to talk about trivial events (&#8220;stupid things&#8221;), but why is it so hard to talk about the most important thing that&#8217;s ever happened to mankind?\u00a0 We share good news about our job, or church, or family- but do we share the Best News of all time?\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\t\t<div class='author-shortcodes'>\n\t\t\t<div class='author-inner'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='author-image'>\n\t\t\t<img src='https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/et_temp\/globe-329567_640-76881_60x60.jpg' alt='' \/>\n\t\t\t<div class='author-overlay'><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div> <!-- .author-image --> \n\t\t<div class='author-info'>\n\t\t\t<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Jesus solves humanity&#8217;s #1 problem:\u00a0 Sin.\u00a0 The best news of all time for all people is that Jesus restores us to a loving faithful relationship with our Creator.\u00a0 Jesus brings God&#8217;s purpose and meaning into our lives<\/span>.\n\t\t<\/div> <!-- .author-info -->\n\t\t\t<\/div> <!-- .author-inner -->\n\t\t<\/div> <!-- .author-shortcodes -->\n<p>Maybe the reason that we don&#8217;t share that good news is that we don&#8217;t fully appreciate who Jesus is and what He did (and does) for us.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #333300;\">Now He Speaks through&#8230;. Us<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Pastor Bret used Hebrews 1:1-4 for the foundation of his message:<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-shadow'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">1 God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">2 has in these last days spoken to us by His <span style=\"background-color: #ffff99;\">Son<\/span>, whom He has appointed <span style=\"background-color: #ffff99;\">heir<\/span> of all things, through whom also He <span style=\"background-color: #ffff99;\">made the worlds<\/span>;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">3 who being the <span style=\"background-color: #ffff99;\">brightness of His glory<\/span> and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself <span style=\"background-color: #ffff99;\">purged our sins<\/span>, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">4 having become so much <span style=\"background-color: #ffff99;\">better than the angels<\/span>, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">NKJV<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #333300;\">Jesus: The Son<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Jesus is THE Son of God.\u00a0 Not just a great preacher, not just a good man.\u00a0 He is, in ways that we may never fully understand, the very essence of God.\u00a0 When we see Jesus, we see God.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-8536\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/David-_1987_600x600-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"128\" height=\"128\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/David-_1987_600x600-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/David-_1987_600x600-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/David-_1987_600x600-178x178.jpg 178w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/David-_1987_600x600-184x184.jpg 184w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/David-_1987_600x600.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 128px) 100vw, 128px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Michelangelo&#8217;s statue of David is a wonderful work of art.\u00a0 It is in David&#8217;s image.\u00a0 But it can&#8217;t move, it can&#8217;t think, it can&#8217;t reason, and it can&#8217;t talk.\u00a0 However, when we look at Jesus, we see more than a depiction of God.\u00a0 We see God.\u00a0 The statue of David comes nowhere close to David&#8217;s &#8220;heart after God&#8221; or to Michelangelo&#8217;s artistic glory.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But, Jesus does represent all of God&#8217;s love and glory.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Do We Know Jesus???<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #333300;\">Jesus: The Heir<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>When Jesus breathed His last, a Roman centurion standing by the cross said, &#8220;Truly this man was the Son of God.&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=mark+15&amp;version=TLB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mark 15:39<\/a>).\u00a0 Think about all that God &#8220;owns&#8221;: the fish, the air, the stars, the things we can&#8217;t see&#8230; and us.\u00a0 A son is the heir of all that the father owns.\u00a0 And, Jesus is the rightful &#8220;heir&#8221; of everything that is the Father&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=matthew+28&amp;version=TLB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matthew 28:18<\/a> (known as &#8220;the great commission&#8221;), Jesus tells US\u00a0 that He has been given all authority.\u00a0 And by that authority He is sending us into the world to make disciples of all nations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Because Jesus is the &#8220;Heir&#8221; of all that the Father owns (in other words- everything), we can stand on His authority and tell people about Him.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><em>Do We Know Jesus???<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #003300;\">Jesus: The Creator<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Our passage in Hebrews says that God &#8220;made the worlds&#8221; through Jesus.\u00a0 The opening verses of Genesis tell us how God made the world&#8230;\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>God said, &#8220;Let there be light&#8221;.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>God said, &#8220;Let there be dry ground.&#8221;\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>God said, &#8220;Let the water team with living creatures.&#8221;\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>God said, &#8220;Let us make man in our own image.&#8221;\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>God spoke, and it was.\u00a0 God created the universe by His Word.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=john+1&amp;version=TLB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John chapter 1<\/a> tells us that Jesus is the Word.\u00a0 That He was with God in the beginning.\u00a0 That He is God.\u00a0 Paul says the same thing in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=col+1&amp;version=TLB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Colossians 1:16<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #003300;\">For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/em>\u00a0 NIV<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>All authority and power belongs to Jesus.\u00a0\u00a0 He created us.\u00a0 He knows us.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><em>Do We Know Jesus???<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #003300;\">Jesus: The Brightness of God&#8217;s Glory<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The moon reflects the sun.\u00a0 But Jesus doesn&#8217;t simply reflect God&#8217;s glory; His glory IS God&#8217;s glory.\u00a0 You can look at Jesus and think:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-8662 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Sunset-Cross_BeHappy-_400x300-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"107\" height=\"80\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Sunset-Cross_BeHappy-_400x300-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Sunset-Cross_BeHappy-_400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 107px) 100vw, 107px\" \/>&#8220;Wow!\u00a0\u00a0 He&#8217;s powerful.\u00a0 Look at all those miracles.\u00a0 And, how could He love us so much that He would willingly die a cruel death on a cross for us?\u00a0 And the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew+17&amp;version=TLB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">transfiguration<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew+28&amp;version=TLB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">resurrection<\/a>.\u00a0 And His description in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=rev+1%3A9-18&amp;version=TLB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Revelation<\/a>.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\">This Jesus is really something special!&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>When you look at Jesus and marvel at His glory, you&#8217;re looking at God and marveling at HIS glory.\u00a0 All of the glory of God is contained in Jesus.\u00a0 The apostle John put it this way:\u00a0 &#8220;<em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.<\/span><\/em>\u00a0 (John 1:14, NIV)<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><em>Do We Know Jesus???<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #003300;\">Jesus:\u00a0 Purged Our Sins<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>God created us to be in His image.\u00a0 He loves us and wants us to be in fellowship with Him.\u00a0 He has a purpose for each of us and He knows that we will be happiest when we live out that purpose.\u00a0 But something went wrong.\u00a0 Somehow, humanity choose to follow our own ways instead of seeking God.\u00a0 So we feel unfulfilled, anxious, and guilty.\u00a0 But Jesus&#8217; life and death solved that problem and gave us the chance to return to God&#8217;s fellowship.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus is the only one who can do that.\u00a0 We can try our best to &#8220;be good&#8221; and to &#8220;clean up our act,&#8221; but the only way to God is to trust in Jesus&#8217; sacrifice.\u00a0 Jesus took on our imperfection and exchanged it for His perfection.\u00a0 Our sins can be purged.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s how Paul put it in his letter to the Colossians:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him [<span style=\"font-size: 10pt; color: #ff00ff;\">Jesus<\/span>],\u00a0 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.<\/span> <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Col 1:19-20, NIV<\/p>\n<p>This rebellion against God- this desire to reject God and to choose our own way- is what we call Sin.\u00a0 The result of sin is that we are eternally separated from God.\u00a0 Just as we can&#8217;t imagine how life on earth would be without the sun, we can even begin to imagine how terrible it would be to be completely separated from God.\u00a0 The result of sin is infinite and eternal punishment.\u00a0 Jesus is the only way to be reconciled to God.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><em>Do We Know Jesus???<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #003300;\">Jesus: Superior to Angels<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Angels, like humans, are created beings.\u00a0 Jesus, however, is eternal and &#8220;begotten.&#8221;\u00a0 He&#8217;s the unique Son of God and He&#8217;s always existed.<\/p>\n<p>So don&#8217;t bother asking angels to help us.\u00a0 Go right to God- go to Jesus!\u00a0 Jesus is our only connection to God; He&#8217;s our only mediator.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">All this energy issues from Christ: God raised him from death and set him on a throne in deep heaven,\u00a0 in charge of running the universe, everything from galaxies to governments, no name and no power exempt from his rule.
