Jim Hughes led our Camp Meeting Service on August 11, 2019.\u00a0 By his estimation, it was the 23rd time he has spoken at the Pitman Grove Camp Meeting.\u00a0 But this was was an unusual evening for two reasons.\u00a0 First, this summer evening was cool and dry!\u00a0 Secondly, Rev. Hughes didn&#8217;t wear a costume (&#8220;No costume, except for the one you see&#8221; as he put it).\u00a0 No guests tonight; he appeared as &#8220;himself.&#8221;<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-21890\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/CMP19-08-11-Jim-Hughes-_IMG_2745-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"251\" height=\"188\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/CMP19-08-11-Jim-Hughes-_IMG_2745-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/CMP19-08-11-Jim-Hughes-_IMG_2745.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 251px) 100vw, 251px\" \/><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Instead of portraying a character from the Bible, he weaved together two familiar Old Testament and New Testament narratives to paint a deeper appreciation and awe of what it means to be saved by grace.\u00a0 Jesus died on the cross for our sins.\u00a0 We&#8217;ve heard that message over and over, we&#8217;ve seen it on tracts, and we&#8217;ve accepted it and grasped it as a core foundation in our lives.\u00a0 And yet- what was the cost?\u00a0 Do we sense the depth of God&#8217;s love in His ages old and ages reaching plan of salvation?\u00a0 Has the truth of God&#8217;s love penetrated into the inner depths of our being?\u00a0 Do our day to day lives bear out the passion for a God who would love us so much?<br \/>\n<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">A Tale of Two Hills<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Through music and dramatic story telling, Rev. Hughes used his talents to present the message of two hills.\u00a0 Two events written into the indelible path of human history, two events linked together by God&#8217;s eternal plan.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Golgotha<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-21891\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/CMP19-08-11-Jim-Hughes-_IMG_2738-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"165\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/CMP19-08-11-Jim-Hughes-_IMG_2738-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/CMP19-08-11-Jim-Hughes-_IMG_2738.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 220px) 100vw, 220px\" \/><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The lyrics of his opening song set the mode:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300;\">&#8220;Mercy:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <br \/>\nWeep over me.\u00a0 Let your tears wash me clean.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300;\">&#8220;Majesty: <br \/>\nBe merciful to me, for my eyes have seen Holy.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;We are tired, weakened by the Fall.&#8221;\u00a0 This sentiment drives us to the first hill- Golgotha.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>A couple of days before climbing Golgotha, Jesus walked up the hill that leads into the city of Jerusalem.\u00a0 Upon seeing the eternal city, He expressed His love and grief over it&#8230;<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-shadow'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">&#8220;O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing! <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"color: #339966;\">Luke 13:34-35<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it and said, &#8220;If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace \u2014 but now it is hidden from your eyes.\u00a0 The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side.\u00a0 They will dash you to the ground, you and the children within your walls. They will not leave one stone on another, because you did not recognize the time of God&#8217;s coming to you.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"color: #339966;\">Luke 19:41-44<\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We all know the story of what else happened that week.\u00a0 The Mt. of Olives and the hill of Golgotha conspired together to end Jesus&#8217; life.\u00a0 Several days after weeping over Jerusalem, the city killed Jesus as it had killed so many prophets in the past.\u00a0 There were the final moments in Gethsemane.\u00a0 There was the unjust trial.\u00a0 And there was the crucifixion. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-6198\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Crucifixion-_Evgraf_Semenovich_Sorokin-300x253.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"185\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Crucifixion-_Evgraf_Semenovich_Sorokin-300x253.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Crucifixion-_Evgraf_Semenovich_Sorokin.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 220px) 100vw, 220px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Loneliness and sadness gripped His heart that week.\u00a0 But none of this was a surprise.\u00a0 Jesus knew of this city and of the events that it held for Him.\u00a0 He knew this week was coming.\u00a0 For millennia, this had been part of the future He knew.\u00a0 Jesus was (and is) &#8220;the Lamb slain before the foundations of the earth&#8221; (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=rev+13%3A5-8&amp;version=NKJV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Revelation 13:8<\/a><\/span>). \u00a0 At the foundation of the earth, Jesus had glimpsed this cross.\u00a0 He hadn&#8217;t seen it for over 2000 years, but now it was upon Him.\u00a0 All of this was linked to Him since the beginning of time.\u00a0 All through the ages.\u00a0 There was no escape.<\/p>\n<p>And so He prayed, &#8220;all things are ready Father.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Rev. Hughes then concluded this narration by singing the hymn, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/genius.com\/Selah-wonderful-merciful-savior-lyrics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wonderful Merciful\u00a0Savior<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Moriah<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The Old Testament and New Testament are tightly linked together.\u00a0 The Old Testament illustrates truths contained in the New Testament.\u00a0 The New Testament illustrates and fulfills the ways of God which are described by the Old Testament.\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-21892\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/CMP19-08-11-Jim-Hughes-_IMG_2743-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"165\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/CMP19-08-11-Jim-Hughes-_IMG_2743-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/CMP19-08-11-Jim-Hughes-_IMG_2743.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 220px) 100vw, 220px\" \/>And through the entire Bible, we see Jesus.\u00a0 We see our sin, we see God&#8217;s Righteousness, and we see God&#8217;s grace.\u00a0 A familiar Old Testament story from the book of Genesis (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=genesis+22%3A1-19&amp;version=TLB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Genesis\u00a022<\/a><\/span>) tells of another hill.\u00a0 It tells of another man who obeyed God fully, and it describes another sacrifice.<\/p>\n<p>About 1500 years before Jesus walked the &#8220;lonesome valley&#8221; to Golgotha, another son and his father made their way towards another hill: Moriah.\u00a0 Abraham and Isaac had traveled the road before.\u00a0 Isaac knew what it meant to make a sacrifice and to worship the Lord.\u00a0 But something seemed different this time.\u00a0 Abraham&#8217;s long awaited and promised son began to notice that somehow this sacrifice was unlike the many others that he had experienced with his father.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, &#8220;Father?&#8221;\u00a0 &#8220;Yes, my son?&#8221; Abraham replied.\u00a0 &#8220;The fire and wood are here,&#8221; Isaac said, &#8220;but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Abraham answered, &#8220;God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.&#8221; And the two of them went on together. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Genesis 22:7-8<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>God promised Abram that his descendants would be as many as the grains of sands on the seashore.\u00a0 God even renamed Abram (&#8220;exalted father&#8221;) to Abraham (&#8220;father of many&#8221;).\u00a0 And yet- in his old age, God still hadn&#8217;t given Abraham a son.\u00a0 But in a miracle that nobody could comprehend, Abraham&#8217;s wife Sarah conceived and gave birth to Isaac.\u00a0 They laughed at God&#8217;s promise, but Isaac was born.\u00a0 Precious Isaac; the fulfillment of God&#8217;s promise.<\/p>\n<p>And as the father and son trudged up that hill, Abraham harbored an ugly secret.\u00a0 Isaac was to be the sacrifice.\u00a0 There was no lamb. God told Abraham to sacrifice his only son, and Abraham was going to obey. And so when Isaac had gathered rocks and completed building the altar, his father had an unusually serious and intent look on his brow.\u00a0 The Father of Many looked into the eyes of his only son, and said &#8220;trust me.&#8221;\u00a0 He then began to wrap the leather thongs around his son.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At first Isaac thought it was all a joke.\u00a0 Father- what&#8217;s going on?\u00a0 What are you doing?\u00a0 But as the thongs became tighter, Isaac realized that this wasn&#8217;t a joke.\u00a0 As the heartbroken father lifted his bound son on to the altar, there was no more possibility of levity.\u00a0 As Abraham raised the knife over his terrified son, there was no escape.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But- But God called out to Abraham:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\">But the angel of the Lord called out to him from heaven, &#8220;Abraham! Abraham!&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0 <br \/>\n&#8220;Here I am,&#8221; he replied.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\">&#8220;Do not lay a hand on the boy,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Do not do anything to him. <br \/>\nNow I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns. <br \/>\nHe went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Genesis 22:11-14<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>God provided Abraham and Isaac a ram.<\/p>\n<p>And so they sacrificed this animal as they had done many times before, and they began the descent down the hill.\u00a0 Father and son together, lost in thought.\u00a0 Terrified and awed by what had just happened.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>God provided Abraham and Isaac a ram.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">A Ram for Abraham, but None for God<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>These two hills are separated in time, but linked in history and in geography.\u00a0 Isaac&#8217;s substituted sacrifice occurred on Mt. Moriah, which later became the site of the Temple in Jerusalem.\u00a0 Jesus&#8217; sacrifice occurred on Golgotha, which is just <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-21893\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/CMP19-08-11-Jim-Hughes-_IMG_2741-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"224\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/CMP19-08-11-Jim-Hughes-_IMG_2741-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/CMP19-08-11-Jim-Hughes-_IMG_2741.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 224px) 100vw, 224px\" \/>outside of Jerusalem&#8217;s first century city gates.\u00a0 Two events with opposite outcomes, but two mileposts on God&#8217;s eternal plan of salvation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There was a ram for the &#8220;father of many&#8221;, but there was none for the Heavenly Father.\u00a0 There was a substitute for Abraham&#8217;s son, but none for God&#8217;s Son.\u00a0 God had no choice but to plunge the knife into His Son and to turn away.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus is our &#8220;ram caught in the thicket&#8221;.\u00a0 His sacrifice saves us from the wrath of God.\u00a0 There was no substitute for Jesus on Golgotha; He was the substitute for us.\u00a0 Jesus was caught in the thicket of our sins.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When we come to that &#8220;Ram&#8221;, the Great Exchange takes place:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>His holiness for our sins.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>His perfection for our shortcomings<\/li>\n<li>His eternal life for our mortality<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>God looks at us and sees perfection.\u00a0 His perfect love drives out all fear.\u00a0 God justifies us (&#8220;Just as if we never sinned&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p>We know the theology, but does our life bear out the passion for God?\u00a0 Have we turned to the Ram in the thicket?\u00a0 Do we trust this infinitely loving God who would\u00a0 send a substitute for Abraham, Isaac and us&#8230; but not for His own Son?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; color: #008000;\">+\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 +\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 +\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 +\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 +\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 +\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 +<\/span><\/p>\n<p>To learn more about the Pitman Grove Camp Meeting, click this button:\u00a0\u00a0 <a href='https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/?page_id=7668' class='big-button biggreen'><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Camp Meeting<\/span><\/a> \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rev.
