{"id":21731,"date":"2019-08-05T14:03:08","date_gmt":"2019-08-05T18:03:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/?p=21731"},"modified":"2019-08-06T15:55:43","modified_gmt":"2019-08-06T19:55:43","slug":"pumc-helps-serv-bring-peace-to-survivors-of-violence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/?p=21731","title":{"rendered":"PUMC Helps SERV Bring Peace to Survivors of Violence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">One of the offshoots of the fire which destroyed our downtown building in 2003, is that our rebuilt church is a modern facility which can be offered to the many groups needing meeting space.\u00a0 Being a &#8220;community center&#8221; and providing meeting space allows us to assist organizations who are providing ministries which go beyond our own expertise.\u00a0 By partnering with outside organizations in this small way, we have been helping people who are dealing with problems such as addictions, grief, or mental illness.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>One of the groups we&#8217;re helping is an organization called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.centerffs.org\/serv\/about-serv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">SERV<\/span><\/a> (Services Empowering Rights of Victims).\u00a0\u00a0 SERV is part of an organization called the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.centerffs.org\/who-we-are\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Center for Family\u00a0Services<\/a>.\u00a0 We are providing SERV a place in which to train their volunteers, and these volunteers are helping victims of domestic violence. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.centerffs.org\/serv\/about-serv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-21745\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Center-for-Family-Services-SERV-_Logo-300x179.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"231\" height=\"138\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Center-for-Family-Services-SERV-_Logo-300x179.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Center-for-Family-Services-SERV-_Logo-132x79.jpg 132w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Center-for-Family-Services-SERV-_Logo.jpg 414w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 231px) 100vw, 231px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The volunteer training is a 60 hour program in which prospective volunteers are trained to be a &#8220;Certified Domestic Violence Response Team&#8221; member.\u00a0 These dedicated individuals rush to places such as hospitals and police stations to provide immediate assistance to victims of domestic violence, sexual violence, and human trafficking.<\/p>\n<p>Domestic Violence Response Teams step into the heat of the moment to provide a\u00a0 wide range of services to help the victims of sexual or domestic violence.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s how SERV describes their mission:\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #993366;\">SERV provides crisis intervention, counseling, and support to survivors of sexual violence, domestic violence, and human trafficking. Our dedicated team of highly trained and compassionate staff provide personalized care to help people follow a path to healing.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Jesus said &#8220;blessed are the peacemakers.&#8221;\u00a0 In the midst of crisis, in the wake of violence, we are called to bring peace.\u00a0 By supporting SERV, we are bringing peace to the victims of violence and human trafficking.\u00a0 We are following Jesus&#8217; example of healing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">How SERV Brings Healing and Peace&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Here are some of SERV&#8217;s current and future programs which minister to the survivors of violence:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Summer group for Teens and Young Adults<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">This weekly group is open to female survivors of domestic\/sexual violence. The 10-week program includes creative arts, mindfulness, self-esteem building activities, and more.<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Film Screening &amp; Discussion: Child Sex Trafficking in the USA<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">We tend to believe that sex trafficking is something that heppens in &#8220;other places.&#8221;\u00a0 But in reality, it&#8217;s happening in our own backyard.\u00a0 The documentry, <a style=\"color: #008000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nestfoundation.org\/playground\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Playground: The Child Sex Trade in America<\/a>, is an informative and challenging look at this crime.<\/span> <\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Therapy through Art<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Creative arts are used in healing groups to support survivors of sexual violence through artistic therapy.\u00a0 In the making of craft items or planting and nurturing of plants, survivors are affirmed of their self-worth through their creative abilities.<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Advocacy<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #008000;\"><em>The legal waters for the victims of violence are hard to navigate.\u00a0 SERV advocates are not attorneys, but they stand with victims at police stations, hospitals, and court rooms to console and inform.<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Safe House<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">In the immediate aftermath of an attack, victims need a safe place to go.\u00a0 They need to be assured that what happened was not their fault, that they are to be valued and protected.
