The needs of people held in detention facilities is constantly before us, and the Church is reaching out on a human level to help them.\u00a0 Regardless of the politics regarding border security, the human need is desperate.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

UMCOR (The United Methodist Committee on Relief) is in the process of delivering Hygiene Kits to detainees who have been released to “Transitional Centers.”\u00a0 We are unable to provide help to those held in the detention centers that we’ve heard so much about, but we can help them once they reach the Transitional Centers.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Hygiene Kits<\/span><\/h3>\n

PUMC is joining the effort by supplying UMCOR with “Hygiene Kits.”\u00a0 The contents and makeup of these “kits” is specifically defined in detail by UMCOR.\u00a0 In our church, we can either donate a completed kit (made according to their instructions), or we can donate items which can be included in the kits.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Here are the instructions from UMCOR.\u00a0 It is important to adhere closely to these details:<\/p>\n

Hygiene Kit Contents<\/span><\/h3>\n
    \n
  • One hand towel (15 x 25 \u201317 x 27 inches)<\/strong> \nNo kitchen, cleaning, or microfiber towels\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/li>\n
  • One washcloth\n

    <\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n

  • One comb<\/strong>\nMust be sturdy with at least 6 inches of teeth. <\/span><\/em>No pocket combs or picks.\u00a0 <\/span><\/em>Rattail and combs without handles are acceptable but must have at least 6 inches of teeth<\/p>\n

    <\/span><\/em><\/li>\n

  • One toenail or fingernail clipper\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 \nNo emery boards or metal nail files\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/li>\n
  • Bath-size soap (3 oz. bar or larger)<\/span><\/strong>\nNo Ivory or Jergen’s soap.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/em>Do not remove from packaging.<\/p>\n

  • One adult toothbrush<\/span><\/strong>\nDo not remove from packaging.\u00a0 <\/span><\/em>Personal advertising not acceptable.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/li>\n
  • 10 adhesive bandages (\u00be by 3 inches)<\/span><\/strong>\nCommon household bandages acceptable.<\/span> <\/em><\/p>\n<\/li>\n
  • One one-gallon size re-sealable bag<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Important Notes<\/span><\/h4>\n
      \n
    • All items must be new.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Do not wash any of the items as they will no longer be considered new.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Do not include any personal notes, money or additional materials in the kits.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Contents of kits, or the containers of kits, should not be imprinted with cartoon characters, advertisements, religious, patriotic, military, or camouflage symbols.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Assembly Directions<\/span><\/h3>\n
        \n
      1. Lay hand towel flat on a table. Lay the washcloth in the center of the hand towel. <\/span><\/li>\n
      2. Place all remaining items on top of the washcloth (except the plastic bag).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
      3. Fold the sides of the hand towel to cover the items. <\/span><\/li>\n
      4. Grasp the bundle tightly and roll over the remainder of the towel.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
      5. Place the tightly rolled bundle in the plastic bag, remove air, and seal. <\/span><\/li>\n
      6. Bring to PUMC when finished.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol><\/div><\/div>\n
