UMCOR, the United Methodist Committee on Relief, may sound like a boring name.\u00a0 But, it’s the biggest tool that we United Methodists have when we want to relieve suffering around the world. On Sunday March 31 we will have a chance to help UMCOR stay in operation.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

What- Who… Me?!?\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

We’ve seen a lot of disasters in recent history:<\/p>\n\n\t\t

\n\t\t\tHurricanes in the U.S…\n\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t
\n\t\t\tTwo hurricanes in Puerto Rico…\n\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t
\n\t\t\tEarthquakes and tsunamis in the Indian Ocean…\n\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t
\n\t\t\tDrought, famine, and refugees in the Horn of Africa…\n\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t
\n\t\t\tTornadoes in our Southwest…\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t\n

What can I do about all of that stuff?<\/span><\/em><\/h4>\n

We watch the drama unfold on our television screens and we feel totally helpless. How can any one person make a difference in the wake of such widespread \"\"devastation?\u00a0 Responders at home and around the world scramble to help survivors… but I’ve got a job and family.\u00a0 I can’t get around like I used to.\u00a0 What can I do???<\/p>\n

The fact is, before those responders even arrive, the United Methodist Committee On Relief is already there, organized and prepared to act.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\nThe response of UMCOR isn’t something “they” do, it’s something WE do. As United Methodists through UMCOR we reach children, families, and communities who have experienced devastation in the wake of disaster. That’s because your generous giving on UMCOR Sunday funds UMCOR’s work, allowing them to act as the hands and feet of Jesus, moving toward the most vulnerable in their darkest days.<\/p>\n

But… Me?\u00a0 I have enough problems in my own life…<\/em><\/span><\/h4>\n

Because United Methodists believe that all people have God-given worth and dignity, regardless of race, religion or gender; together we are there to help anyone impacted by crisis or chronic need. And, after the flood waters have receded, wounds have been cared for, basic needs have been met, and the worlds attention has faded; UMCOR is still there providing ongoing assistance for as long as it’s needed.<\/p>\n

Just Who’s this UMCOR Anyway?<\/span><\/h3>\n

Through their work, UMCOR reveals God’s steadfast love for humankind. For 75 years, UMCOR has brought hope and solidarity to communities in the United States and around the world in the wake of natural or man-made disasters; and have brought support and expertise to communities on a path to development. Because you give, the United Methodist Church’s compassionate response to human suffering is felt in more than 80 countries around the world.<\/p>\n

UMCOR’s work can be categorized into three major areas:<\/p>\n
