(Camp Meeting, 8\/27\/18)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Pastor Bret Walker is currently a local pastor serving churches in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.faithstreet.com\/church\/hudson-united-methodist-church-pedricktown-nj-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pedricktown<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.faithstreet.com\/church\/ebenezer-united-methodist-church-auburn-nj\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Auburn<\/a> (Salem County), but his <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-19625\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/CampMtg18-Bret-_IMG_1405-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"233\" height=\"175\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/CampMtg18-Bret-_IMG_1405-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/CampMtg18-Bret-_IMG_1405.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 233px) 100vw, 233px\" \/>roots are in Pitman.\u00a0 He grew up in PUMC.\u00a0 And for several consecutive summers he attended every Camp Meeting service, growing into a love and commitment to the Lord.\u00a0 He was the drummer in our church&#8217;s Praise and Worship band, member of the choir, leader of the youth group.\u00a0 He was serving in the way that dedicated lay members should.\u00a0 But the Bible and the Camp Meeting Preaching called him from the pews to the pulpit, and he now serves two congregations as their local pastor.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Our last session of the 2018 season was on August 26, and Pastor Bret Walker was a fitting person to lead the season&#8217;s final service.\u00a0 Bret provided the both the message and the music (with some help from his ukulele).<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-download'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Whenever the topic about the names and locations of Pastor Bret&#8217;s two churches comes up, things get a bit confusing. If you ask him which churches he serves, you&#8217;ll get hit with a string of proper nouns. Sherry Zapolla asked us if the Church is ready for Revival (<span style=\"font-size: 10pt; color: #993300;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #993300; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/?p=19216\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #000080; text-decoration: underline;\">click\u00a0here<\/span><\/a><\/span> to read about her message<\/span>).\u00a0 But on this night, Pastor Bret asked if our <em>hearts<\/em> are ready for revival.\u00a0 And he challenged us to tap into the energy of the Camp Meeting heritage to share that passion with others.<\/p>\n<p>During his message, Bret held up a challenge that set the tone for his message:<\/p>\n\n\t\t<div class='author-shortcodes'>\n\t\t\t<div class='author-inner'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='author-image'>\n\t\t\t<img src='https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/et_temp\/Sunset-Cross_BeHappy-_400x300-18345_60x60.jpg' alt='' \/>\n\t\t\t<div class='author-overlay'><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div> <!-- .author-image --> \n\t\t<div class='author-info'>\n\t\t\t&#8220;<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Can I conceive of an eternity without this person? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Or, do I speak the words of Life to him?<\/span>&#8220;\n\t\t<\/div> <!-- .author-info -->\n\t\t\t<\/div> <!-- .author-inner -->\n\t\t<\/div> <!-- .author-shortcodes -->\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Revival&#8230; To bring back to life&#8230;\u00a0 Bret has a love for the Pitman Camp Meeting and for the speakers who who brought crowds of thousands to the Pitman Grove.\u00a0 Musicians like C. Austin Miles and preachers like Billy Sunday were part of the rich fabric of this Camp Meeting.<\/p>\n<p>But it wasn&#8217;t the people who brought the power.\u00a0 It was the power of God&#8217;s redemptive salvation that brought thousands to this patch of ground.\u00a0 The strength of the Holy Spirit gave these talented people a hunger for preaching the Good News, and that&#8217;s what put power into the music and preaching.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-19624 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/CampMtg18-Bret-_IMG_1403-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"239\" height=\"179\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/CampMtg18-Bret-_IMG_1403-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/CampMtg18-Bret-_IMG_1403.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 239px) 100vw, 239px\" \/>That same power is available to us today, but do we thirst for it?\u00a0 Do we look at people we love and ask, &#8220;<em><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Is this someone I want to spend eternity without<\/span><\/strong><\/em>&#8220;?\u00a0 Are we overpowered with that thought?\u00a0 We take a laissez-faire approach to our witness, but maybe we wouldn&#8217;t if this question was on our minds as we speak to our friends, family, neighbors and co-workers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The motto of the Pitman Camp Meeting used to be &#8220;<strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Pitman and Power<\/span><\/strong>.&#8221;\u00a0 The power of the Pitman Camp Meeting lies in a passion for glorifying God and for inviting people to find the Way to that passion of a new (revived) life in Christ!\u00a0 Pastor Bret offered some observations on how that passion plays out in our lives.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-download'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> Pastor Bret has posted this sermon on his podcast site (&#8220;Guerrilla Christianity&#8221;).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">To listen to this sermon (or to others in his library), click this button:\u00a0 <a href='https:\/\/maxthedork.podbean.com\/' class='icon-button rss-icon' target=\"_blank\">Podcast<span class='et-icon'><\/span><\/a> \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(The podcast will open in a new window.\u00a0 Start the player then return to this page to follow along)<\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Personal Witness<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>&#8220;Preaching the Gospel&#8221; is easier than it sounds.\u00a0 You don&#8217;t have to be a fiery preacher like Billy Graham or Billy Sunday.\u00a0 All you have to do is to be a witness; tell your story. Where have you seen God in your life?<\/p>\n<p>One example of this in the Bible is when Philip brought Nathaniel to Jesus (and they became two of Jesus&#8217; 12 disciples):<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Philip found Nathanael and told him, &#8220;We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote \u2014 Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">&#8220;Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?&#8221; Nathanael asked. &#8220;Come and see,&#8221; said Philip.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">John 1:45-46, NIV<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Come and See&#8230;<\/span><\/em><\/strong> We don&#8217;t have to preach a great sermon.\u00a0 We don&#8217;t have to convince anyone.\u00a0 The most powerful sermon is when a friend tells another friend what they saw in their life.\u00a0 Come and See&#8230;\u00a0 You can read the Bible cover to cover and not see Jesus.\u00a0 But when you look up and see how the faith described in the Bible is playing out in the people right in front of you, the Spirit has touched you.<\/p>\n<p>Ezekiel chapter 37 tells the story of the valley full of Dry Bones.\u00a0 God tells Ezekiel to speak to these dry bones, and the bones joined together and flesh and muscle began to form over the skeletons&#8230;.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\n<span style=\"color: #993366;\">The hand of the Lord was upon me, and he brought me out by the Spirit of the Lord and set me in the middle of a valley; it was full of bones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\">He led me back and forth among them, and I saw a great many bones on the floor of the valley, bones that were very dry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\">He asked me, &#8220;Son of man, can these bones live?&#8221; I said, &#8220;O Sovereign Lord, you alone know.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Then he said to me, &#8220;Prophesy to these bones and say to them, &#8216;Dry bones, hear the word of the Lord!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\">\u00a0This is what the Sovereign Lord says to these bones: I will make breath enter you, and you will come to life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\">I will attach tendons to you and make flesh come upon you and cover you with skin; I will put breath in you, and you will come to life. Then you will know that I am the Lord.'&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\">So I prophesied as I was commanded. And as I was prophesying, there was a noise, a rattling sound, and the bones came together, bone to bone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\">I looked, and tendons and flesh appeared on them and skin covered them, but there was no breath in them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Ezekiel 37:1-8, NIV<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Prophesy&#8230; speak God&#8217;s Truth to someone, and life will begin to form.\u00a0 Revival will begin.\u00a0 And once the breath of the Holy Spirit enters them, life begins.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a sense, we were all once &#8220;dry bones.&#8221;\u00a0 We didn&#8217;t have the life of the Holy Spirit in us.\u00a0 It took a witness, usually a personal testimony; someone made an impression on us.\u00a0 And once we opened ourselves to hearing the Holy Spirit, we began to live.\u00a0 In reality, we are surrounded by a valley of &#8220;dry bones.&#8221; People who don&#8217;t know Jesus as their Savior and Lord do not have eternal life.\u00a0 But when we give a personal witness by speaking Truth to &#8220;dry bones,&#8221; the Holy Spirit breathes in new life.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Spending Ourselves to Depend on God<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>OK.\u00a0 You completed Local Pastor&#8217;s School, you&#8217;ve obtained your license, and now you&#8217;ve been appointed to be the pastor of two churches.\u00a0 Two churches of people with doubts, fears, struggles and needs.\u00a0 It&#8217;s up to YOU to minister to them!\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It can sound pretty overwhelming!\u00a0 Billy Sunday gave up a baseball contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates to become a preacher.\u00a0 He spoke to crowds numbering in the thousands.\u00a0 But me- how can I do that?\u00a0 I&#8217;m not Billy Sunday!<\/p>\n<p>You don&#8217;t have to be Billy Sunday.\u00a0 All you have to do is to give your all.\u00a0 Live out your faith.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<div class='author-shortcodes'>\n\t\t\t<div class='author-inner'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='author-image'>\n\t\t\t<img src='https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/et_temp\/Bret-Walker-Grove-2017-_IMG_0629-400x300-25193_60x60.jpg' alt='' \/>\n\t\t\t<div class='author-overlay'><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div> <!-- .author-image --> \n\t\t<div class='author-info'>\n\t\t\t<em><span style=\"color: #003300;\">Don&#8217;t hold anything back. Go beyond what you can do, and then the Spirit will take control. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #003300;\">THAT&#8217;S when things get done.<\/span><\/em>\n\t\t<\/div> <!-- .author-info -->\n\t\t\t<\/div> <!-- .author-inner -->\n\t\t<\/div> <!-- .author-shortcodes -->\n<p>Your job as a &#8220;preacher&#8221;- or any Christian who is captured by the need to share the Good News of salvation- your job is to &#8220;exhaust yourself.&#8221;\u00a0 Do all you can do and then get out of the way to let the Spirit work.\u00a0 Give someone all the information about the Harvest America crusade.\u00a0 Remind them. Tell them how much it meant to you.\u00a0 Spend time with them.\u00a0 Encourage them.\u00a0 Give them a ride to the event.\u00a0 Do all you can do, but trust God for the results.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Infectious Excitement!!!<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Once you&#8217;ve &#8220;exhausted yourself&#8221;- once the Spirit is taking your efforts and giving them power- you can&#8217;t help but feel excited!\u00a0 One facet of playing a role in revival is Excitement!\u00a0 Seeing God use your words and efforts to give someone eternal life is exciting!\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-bio'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">During the week, construction workers began replacing the roof on the Grove Tabernacle where we meet.\u00a0 The auditorium was surrounded with Caution tape when we arrived for our service and sections of the roof were open to the evening sky. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-19636\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/CampMtg18-Tabernacle-Roof-_IMG_1329-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/CampMtg18-Tabernacle-Roof-_IMG_1329-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/CampMtg18-Tabernacle-Roof-_IMG_1329.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">This reminded us of the story in <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=mark+2%3A1-12&amp;version=TLB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mark 2:1-12<\/a><\/span>.\u00a0 This is when four friends of a paralytic dug a hole in the roof of a house so they could lower their friend past the crowd to lay him at Jesus&#8217; feet.\u00a0 Jesus was amazed at their faith, and the paralytic was healed (and forgiven!).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">It&#8217;s easy to see the joy of the man who had been healed.\u00a0 But imagine the reaction of those friends of the paralytic.\u00a0 Their efforts paid off.\u00a0 They gave all they had to carry this man up to the the roof and to dig through the surface.\u00a0 They exhausted themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">But imagine their joy when their friend picked up his mat and walked out of the house?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">If you share the gospel with someone, and the Spirit uses your efforts to heal your friend; to give his &#8220;dry bones&#8221; eternal life, imagine your joy&#8230; imagine your excitement about what God has done!\u00a0<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n<p>If you&#8217;ve been a Christian for a long time, remember when you first realized that you were saved.\u00a0 Imagine the excitment when you first committed your life to God.\u00a0 The newly saved are the most enthusiastic people.\u00a0 Like them, you can burst at the seams when you think of what God gave you: Eternal Life!<\/p>\n<p>Gift- Eternal life&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>We can all think of times when we were excited by a gift.\u00a0 Most of us can reflect back to special Christmases or birthdays.\u00a0 We don&#8217;t deserve gifts.\u00a0 We receive them because someone loves us for who we are; we don&#8217;t do anything to earn them.<\/p>\n<p>And that&#8217;s how it is with the Greatest Gift- Salvation and Eternal life.<\/p>\n<p>The thief on the cross never preached a sermon.\u00a0 He never went on a Missions Trip to rebuild homes.\u00a0 He never stood on a street corner with a Bible.\u00a0 He only turned to the Savior and he was saved.<\/p>\n<p>The thief didn&#8217;t have time to share his faith, but we do.\u00a0 If you&#8217;ve received Christ as your savior show your excitement!\u00a0 Be a witness for someone else.\u00a0 Tell them how you were dead in your sins and how God revived you.\u00a0 Tell them about the people who made an impression on you.\u00a0 Tell them how God entered your life when you exhausted yourself and gave it up for Him.<\/p>\n<p>Excitement is infectious.\u00a0 And so is the Good news of Eternal Life.\u00a0 But we need to share our story.\u00a0 We need to be that light.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #800000; font-size: 18pt;\">=\u00a0\u00a0 =\u00a0\u00a0 =\u00a0\u00a0 =\u00a0\u00a0 =\u00a0\u00a0 =\u00a0\u00a0 =\u00a0\u00a0 =\u00a0\u00a0 =\u00a0\u00a0 =\u00a0\u00a0 =\u00a0\u00a0 =\u00a0\u00a0 =<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-shadow'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Bret&#8217;s first song set the tone for the evening: Power in the Blood.\u00a0 There is &#8220;Mighty Working Power&#8221;
