{"id":19390,"date":"2018-08-13T14:59:32","date_gmt":"2018-08-13T18:59:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/?p=19390"},"modified":"2018-08-23T09:14:29","modified_gmt":"2018-08-23T13:14:29","slug":"crossing-the-commitment-line-camp-meeting-8-12-18","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/?p=19390","title":{"rendered":"Crossing the Commitment Line (Camp Meeting, 8\/12\/18)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.richwoodchurch.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Richwood United Methodist Church<\/span><\/a> <em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">hosted the Pitman Camp Meeting on 8\/12\/18. \u00a0 Experience from previous Camp Meeting Summers tells us that when Richwood comes, it means that that the entire auditorium stage will be covered with musical instruments and equipment.\u00a0 It means that the whole Grove will filled with the sounds of prayer and worship lead by Richwood&#8217;s Praise band, &#8220;Sanctified&#8221; (and that the music will begin long before the 7:30 PM opening of the service!)<\/span><\/em><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Richwood&#8217;s hosting also means that we will hear a great message from Rev. Steve Herman, the pastor of Richwood UMC. \u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Richwood is one of the annual host churches for the Camp Meeting; we&#8217;ve come to expect a powerful effort from them.\u00a0 And once again, they teamed up with the Holy Spirit and delivered!<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Music<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Richwood&#8217;s praise and worship band, called &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/sanctified.music.rumc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Sanctified<\/span><\/a>&#8221; (<em><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; color: #ff6600;\">&#8220;Like&#8221; their Facebook page!<\/span><\/em>) is one of the most established in our area&#8230; and probably the largest and most equipped musical group that comes to the Grove during the Camp Meeting Season.\u00a0 And this year, they didn&#8217;t disappoint!\u00a0 With about 10 members and a large screen displaying the song&#8217;s lyrics, their presence on stage took a &#8220;concert&#8221; and turned it into a true experience of prayer and worship.<\/p>\n<p>They opened the service with a couple of songs (including, of course, &#8220;In the Garden&#8221;), and then lead a prayerful time of music after Rev. Steve Herman is one of the &#8220;regular&#8221; speakers at the Pitman Camp Meeting.\u00a0 For many years he has been asked to serve, and for many summers he has said &#8220;yes.&#8221;\u00a0 Speakers are lined up in March-April, and when someone agrees to take an evening they are committing to be at the service in July or August.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-19400\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/CampMtg18-Steve-Herman-Richwood-_IIMG_1151-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/CampMtg18-Steve-Herman-Richwood-_IIMG_1151-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/CampMtg18-Steve-Herman-Richwood-_IIMG_1151.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Commitment.\u00a0 There&#8217;s a point where there&#8217;s no turning back.\u00a0 We like to say things like &#8220;someday&#8221;, &#8220;I&#8217;ll think about it&#8221;,\u00a0 &#8220;sounds like a great idea,&#8221;\u00a0 or &#8220;Let me get back to you.&#8221;\u00a0 But we can&#8217;t stay in that limbo land forever.\u00a0 There comes a time when we must say either &#8220;Yes&#8221; or &#8220;No.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In this year&#8217;s church softball season, they tried to make things safer by avoiding collisions at home plate.\u00a0 So they have a rule which places a &#8220;tag plate&#8221; up the third base line from home plate\u00a0 There&#8217;s no sliding into home plate; everything is a force play.\u00a0 To differentiate between &#8220;rounding third base&#8221; and &#8220;running to home plate&#8221;, they drew a &#8220;Commitment Line&#8221; in the dirt just past third base.\u00a0 Once you cross that line, you&#8217;re on your way to home plate.\u00a0 If you don&#8217;t get to the tag plate before the ball does, you&#8217;re out.<\/p>\n<p>Commitment.\u00a0 There comes a point when we have to say &#8220;Yes&#8221; or &#8220;No.&#8221;\u00a0 We see many examples in life:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Sports<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\nIn any sport there are examples of when you&#8217;re committed to stealing a base, or taking a shot on goal, or diving off the board.\u00a0 Once you take that step, or run, or jump, there&#8217;s no turning back.<\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Education<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\nOnce you choose your major, you&#8217;re committed to complete the 2, 4, or 8 years it takes to earn your degree.<\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Marriage<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\nOnce you say &#8220;I Do&#8221; you are committed until &#8220;death do we part.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Military<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\nWhen you join the military you swear to support the constitution.\u00a0 You also commit yourself to serving for a certain number of years and to defending your country with your life if called upon.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class='et-box et-bio'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Shortly after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, our country needed a victory to demonstrate that we could and would defend ourselves. We wanted to show that we had the capability to strike Japan on their own homeland.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-4071\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/B29-Bomber-_wgnsRadioCom.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"276\" height=\"183\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/B29-Bomber-_wgnsRadioCom.jpg 276w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/B29-Bomber-_wgnsRadioCom-207x136.jpg 207w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/B29-Bomber-_wgnsRadioCom-140x94.jpg 140w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 276px) 100vw, 276px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The problem was, at that early point in the war we DIDN&#8217;T have the capability to strike Japan on their own homeland.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And so they came up with a daring plan to fly some bombers off of an aircraft carrier and conduct a raid on Japan.\u00a0 These bombers could take off from the carrier&#8230; but they couldn&#8217;t land on the carrier.\u00a0 There was no return.\u00a0 Instead, they would continue to China and hope for the best. The mission went beyond dangerous; it was likely that these pilots would never return home safely.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But, led by Lieutenant Colonel Jimmy Doolitle, the planes completed their <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Doolittle_Raid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">mission<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0 And 70 of the 80 crewmembers eventually made it back home by the end of the war (after spending years in a Chinese or Russian POW camp).\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But imagine being on one of those planes the moment when the pilot throttled up to take off from the carrier? You don&#8217;t have any fighter escort.\u00a0 The Japanese had just shown the power they had over us at Pearl Harbor.\u00a0 You&#8217;re headed into an unknown future.\u00a0 But once the plane is at full throttle and it&#8217;s zipping down the runway, there&#8217;s no turning back.<\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Commitment to God<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Sports, school, military, country; they&#8217;re all important commitments.\u00a0 But they&#8217;re temporary.\u00a0 They inspire hope, but they&#8217;re not a sure bet.\u00a0 Jimmy Doolittle&#8217;s commitment to his country paid off (in a symbolic way), but it didn&#8217;t have any permanent strategic value.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Bible is filled with lots of examples of people who were called to a commitment line with God.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\t\t<div class='et-simple-slider et_sliderfx_slide et_sliderauto_false et_sliderauto_speed_5999 et_slidertype_simple'>\n\t\t\t<div class='et-simple-slides'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-wrapper'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tAbram left his homeland for the land that God promised, but Lot didn&#8217;t<\/p>\n<p>(<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=gen+12%3A1-4&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">read more<\/a><\/span>)\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tLot left Sodom and its sinful lifestyle, but his wife looked back<\/p>\n<p>(<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=gen+19%3A21-26&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">read more<\/a><\/span>)\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\tMoses killed an Egyptian and gave up his privileged position in the royal family,<\/p>\n<p>but many of the fleeing Israelites wanted to go back to Egypt.
