Jim Hughes<\/span><\/span><\/a> brought his friend Thomas to the Camp Meeting service on 7\/15\/18.\u00a0 Yeah- that Thomas- the one we\u00a0 call Doubting Thomas.\u00a0 How can Jesus be alive?\u00a0 I saw Him die.\u00a0 And NOBODY escapes the cross&#8230; do they?<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-19029\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/CampMtg18-Grove-Auditorium-_sr-IMG_2692-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/CampMtg18-Grove-Auditorium-_sr-IMG_2692-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/CampMtg18-Grove-Auditorium-_sr-IMG_2692.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Jim Hughes has been a regular at the Pitman Camp Meeting for years.\u00a0 In fact, for about 150 days or evenings- half the year- he&#8217;s &#8220;bringing friends&#8221; to all sorts of worship services and gatherings.\u00a0 His ministry of first person dramatizations and music has been a blessing to thousands of people over the years.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">At <a href=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/?p=15506\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">last year&#8217;s Camp Meeting<\/span><\/a>, he was one of those who was there when some people disturbed a meeting with Jesus by cutting a hole through the roof and\u00a0 lowering their paralytic friend into the Master&#8217;s presence.\u00a0 There were a variety of people there\u00a0 that day; Pharisees, rich people, poor people, and&#8230; you!\u00a0 Weren&#8217;t you there too?<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">On this Sunday, Rev. Hughes- er- Thomas entered the auditorium singing &#8220;Were you There (when they Crucified My Lord)?&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Thomas was there.\u00a0 But how could he stay?\u00a0 Like most of the other disciples, he hid in the background when their leader was executed.\u00a0 Then he ran for his life; could he be next?<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">As &#8220;Thomas&#8221; entered our midst, he explained that a week had elapsed since the crucifixion.\u00a0 Some of his friends sent word to him,\u00a0 telling him\u00a0 to return to Jerusalem.\u00a0 They made some\u00a0 incredible claim;\u00a0 something about seeing Jesus- alive?!?\u00a0 <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">But, how could that be???\u00a0 Nobody escapes the cross&#8230; Do they???<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">God&#8217;s Big Enough for Questions&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Before the &#8220;costume change&#8221; that replaced Rev. Hughes with Thomas, Jim made some opening comments from the podium.\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-18998\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/CampMtg18-Jim-Hughes-_IMG_0871-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"224\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/CampMtg18-Jim-Hughes-_IMG_0871-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/CampMtg18-Jim-Hughes-_IMG_0871.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 224px) 100vw, 224px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re all familiar with the story of Thomas.\u00a0 Doubting Thomas.\u00a0 Sometimes we&#8217;re not sure of things and we need to see some proof.\u00a0 Sometimes we flat out don&#8217;t understand, and we need some answers.\u00a0 But God&#8217;s good with that.\u00a0 He wants us to search.\u00a0 He&#8217;s big enough for questions.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas gets a bad rap.\u00a0 He loved the Lord immensely, but just couldn&#8217;t get a handle on what had just happened.\u00a0 Alive??? How could that be?\u00a0 Nobody escapes the cross&#8230; do they???<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Where You There?<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>After the costume change, Rev. Hughes was gone and Thomas appeared.\u00a0 As he entered the Grove Tabernacle, he sang the hymn &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Were_You_There\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Were\u00a0You\u00a0There?<\/span><\/a>&#8221;\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-19000\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/CampMtg18-Jim-Hughes-_IMG_0885-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/CampMtg18-Jim-Hughes-_IMG_0885-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/CampMtg18-Jim-Hughes-_IMG_0885.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Yes,\u00a0 Thomas was there.\u00a0 He was there when Jesus had performed so many miracles in the past.\u00a0 He wasn&#8217;t so sure about them at first either.\u00a0 On each occasion, he verified that the leprosy was gone, or that the person was really alive, or that the demon was really gone.\u00a0 He was there.\u00a0 He saw it!<\/p>\n<p>Jesus really did raise <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John+11&amp;version=NLT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lazarus<\/a> from the dead.\u00a0 Then why- WHY didn&#8217;t He prevent what happened to Himself?\u00a0 He calmed the storm; couldn&#8217;t He have called down some angles who would have calmed the crowd who wanted to arrest Him?\u00a0 He raised Lazarus.\u00a0 Couldn&#8217;t He have prevented His own death?<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<span style=\"color: #800000;\">Yes- I was there when they crucified my Lord.\u00a0 I heard Him cry out, &#8220;It is finished!&#8221; right before He took His last breath.\u00a0 How much I would love to hear His voice again; to hear Him call my name one more time.\u00a0 But I was there.\u00a0 I saw Him die.\u00a0 He&#8217;s gone.\u00a0 Nobody escapes the cross&#8230; do they?<\/span>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Take Me Back to My First Love&#8230;<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Jesus had predicted what was going to happen to Him; that he would be mocked, killed, and raised from the dead.\u00a0 He said that He was leaving to prepare a place for us.\u00a0 &#8220;I do not understand the meaning behind these words.\u00a0 I want to believe, I LONG to believe.\u00a0 But I can&#8217;t do it without Jesus&#8230;\u00a0 I was there- I saw Him die.\u00a0 And no one escapes the cross&#8230; do they?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Thomas then sang the song, &#8220;First Love.&#8221;\u00a0 It was a moment of surrender.\u00a0 Where I am&#8230; where I&#8217;m running to&#8230; where I&#8217;m running from&#8230; isn&#8217;t where I want to be.\u00a0 I need to be with You. I remember when you talked of love, when you fed the thousands.\u00a0 How I long to be with Him again.\u00a0 How I long to hear words of life.\u00a0 How I long to be taken back to that place where He was the reason for my rising in the morning.\u00a0 How I long to believe that He&#8217;s really alive.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But Jesus is dead.\u00a0 And no one escapes the cross&#8230; do they?<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\n<li><em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8220;Bring me back where I was, where I could hear You so clearly&#8230;&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8220;Everything was possible with You!&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8220;Take me back to first love, to the place where I once was. Where holiness was all I could find&#8230;&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8220;Just wanting only Your anointing&#8230;&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8220;They say you rise as you get older.\u00a0 All I know is I&#8217;ve grown colder.\u00a0 Take me back to first love&#8230;.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Thomas then returned to the room where the disciples were staying.\u00a0 He greeted his friends, admitting that he thought he&#8217;d never see them again.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<span style=\"color: #800000;\">I poured myself\u00a0 into Him, but now He&#8217;s gone.\u00a0 I feel deceived.\u00a0 And now you say that He&#8217;s alive again?!?\u00a0 We try to make ourselves believe He&#8217;s alive because we&#8217;re the ones who denied Him!\u00a0 WE abandoned Him.\u00a0 Now He&#8217;s gone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">You say He&#8217;s alive- how I want this to be true!\u00a0 How I want to return to my First Love.\u00a0 I&#8217;m the one who\u00a0 tested out all of the miracles when He was here.\u00a0 Those 12 baskets of food that were left over?\u00a0 It was me who counted every one of them.\u00a0 If He rose from the dead, I need to see it for myself<\/span>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But then Jesus appeared!\u00a0\u00a0 <em><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000; font-size: 14pt;\">Peace be with you Thomas!<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>But Thomas didn&#8217;t need any proof.\u00a0 All he could say is, &#8220;My Lord and my God!&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, &#8220;Peace be with you!&#8221;\u00a0 Then he said to Thomas, &#8220;Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Thomas said to him, &#8220;My Lord and my God!&#8221;<\/span> <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">John 20:26-28<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">My Lord- I believe!<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">How Beautiful&#8230;<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>&#8220;My Lord and My God.&#8221;\u00a0 When Jesus is our First Love; when we see Him active in our own lives, all we can do is praise Him- &#8220;My Lord and my href=\"https:\/\/genius.com\/Twila-paris-how-beautiful-lyrics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">How\u00a0Beautiful<\/span><\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><em>&#8220;How beautiful the Hands that served, the wine and the bread, and the sons of the earth&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8220;How beautiful the feet that walked the long dusty roads, and the hill to the cross&#8230;&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><em>&#8220;How beautiful the heart that bled, and took all my sin, and bore them instead&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><em>&#8220;And as He laid down His life, we offer this sacrifice: <br \/>\nthat we will live just as He lived- willing to pay the price.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><em>&#8220;How beautiful, is the body of Christ.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Thomas knelt and replied to Jesus, &#8220;<span style=\"color: #800000;\">Now I begin to understand that we need to be Your hands and feet.\u00a0 It&#8217;s up to us to tell our friends and our family of your life and death and resurrection.\u00a0 I understand now what you were teaching us at the Passover super when You said that this is My body shed for the sacrifice of sin.\u00a0 Now I understand what the prophet said that you would be crushed for our iniquities<\/span> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=isa+53&amp;version=NLT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Isaiah 53<\/span><\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Now I understand that we need to tell the story.\u00a0 Your body was broken so that we could live.\u00a0 You are the Lamb of God.<\/span>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-6198\" #0000ff;\">Calvary&#8217;s Love&#8230;<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The final song was &#8220;Calvary&#8217;s Love&#8221;&#8230;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\n<li><em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8220;Only Jesus.\u00a0 Free redemption, full and free&#8230;.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8220;There&#8217;s a yearning in all our lives, that only Jesus satisfies&#8230;&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8220;Calvary&#8217;s love will sail forever.\u00a0 Like an ark, on the sea of humanity&#8230;.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8220;Calvary&#8217;s love will bring us home&#8230;&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8220;Calvary&#8217;s love can heal the spirits that life has crushed and cast aside&#8230;&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8220;So decide to tell the story of a love that loved enough to die&#8230;&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Calvary&#8217;s love- priceless gift (that we&#8217;re) unworthy of&#8230;.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8220;Sins forgiven, and heaven gained&#8230;&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Sins forgiven, and heaven gained.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Yes- Jesus Escaped the Cross!<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Jesus did &#8220;escape the cross.&#8221;\u00a0 He willingly submitted to its death, but He escaped from that death so that we might have life.\u00a0 That might sound like a bunch of religious mumbo jumbo, but imagine this:\u00a0 We&#8217;ve strayed so far from God that we sometimes don&#8217;t\u00a0 even want to acknowledge that He exists.\u00a0 How, then, can we ever have a relationship with Him?\u00a0 How can we ever claim all that He has to offer us?<\/p>\n<p>But- by dying and rising again, Jesus escaped the cross.\u00a0 And, He took us along with Him on the escape.\u00a0 In faith, with our sins paid for, things are put right with God once again.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Suddenly, &#8220;Thomas&#8221; became Rev. Hughes once more.\u00a0 Jim explained why he came to the Camp Meeting tonight.\u00a0 He came to tell us that Jesus cares for you, that you are created for Him, and that He will return.\u00a0 For a world that seems upside down, divided, full of hatred, of wars and rumors of wars&#8230; but it&#8217;s a world that God is bringing to its point of critical mass.\u00a0 To a place where soon the King of Kings and Lord of Lords will change everything.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-19001\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/CampMtg18-Jim-Hughes-_IMG_0891-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"304\" height=\"228\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/CampMtg18-Jim-Hughes-_IMG_0891-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/CampMtg18-Jim-Hughes-_IMG_0891.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 304px) 100vw, 304px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If you know Him, there can be a peace that passes all understanding, when we live in surrender to Him.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">If you know Jesus as your savior&#8230;<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Return to your First Love.\u00a0 Many of us see ourselves in the first chapters of Revelation; Jesus told the church at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Revelation+2%3A1-7&amp;version=NLT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Ephesus<\/span><\/a> that they had &#8220;lost their first love.&#8221;\u00a0 He told the church at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Revelation+3%3A14-22&amp;version=NLT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Laodicea<\/span><\/a> that their love was lukewarm.\u00a0 We do good works, but have we forsaken our first love?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Church- we need to come back to that place where Jesus is everything to us;\u00a0 where &#8220;<em>the things of earth grow strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace.<\/em>&#8221; (<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">song- &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hymnal.net\/en\/hymn\/h\/645\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Turn\u00a0Your\u00a0Eyes\u00a0Upon\u00a0Jesus<\/a>&#8220;<\/span>).<\/p>\n<p>Are you living in surrender to the King of Kings?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">If you don&#8217;t know Jesus as your Savior&#8230;<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>There&#8217;s a great separation between God and sinful man.
