{"id":1896,"date":"2014-05-22T11:35:52","date_gmt":"2014-05-22T15:35:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/?p=1896"},"modified":"2015-08-08T13:38:48","modified_gmt":"2015-08-08T17:38:48","slug":"2014-annual-conference-to-meet-in-wildwood-529-531","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/?p=1896","title":{"rendered":"2014 Annual Conference to Meet In Wildwood (5\/29 &#8211; 5\/31)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Annual Conference&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Our church is part of the Greater New Jersey Annual Conference.\u00a0 Our Annual Conference is divided into 9 Districts (we are in the Delaware Bay District).\u00a0 Once a year (that&#8217;s why they call it an &#8220;Annual&#8221; Conference), representatives from the United Methodist churches across New Jersey (and parts of Pennsylvania and New York) gather for a 3 day conference. This year&#8217;s conference will be held in Wildwood from Wednesday May 28 through Saturday May 31.<\/p>\n<p>The conference officially starts on Thursday, but Wednesday will feature an optional day of learning and service.<\/p>\n<p>Churches are represented by their clergy members and by an equal number of lay members.\u00a0 In our case, our clergy members are Rev. Potts and Rev. Yang, and our lay members are Jeremy Andrade and Larry Bakely.\u00a0 Lay Members are chosen for 4-year terms during each church&#8217;s Charge Conference.<\/p>\n<p>The annual conference is a combination of service, worship, and &#8220;business meetings&#8221; (also known as &#8220;Holy Conferencing).<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\">&#8220;Holy Conferencing&#8221;<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Annual conference decides the &#8220;business&#8221; issues of the church.\u00a0 Budgets are debated and approved, resolutions and reports are approved, and clergy appointments are officially made.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u00a0&#8220;Worship&#8221;<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The annual conference isn&#8217;t all business; we also need to keep in touch with God.\u00a0 Each day begins with a time of worship.\u00a0 The conference opens on Thursday with a worship service.\u00a0 This year&#8217;s preacher will be Bishop Sally Dyck who is the presiding bishop of the Northern Illinois Conference. \u00a0 On Friday we will hear the preaching of Bishop Moses Young Hun Kim, who is the presiding bishop of the Seoul Annual Conference.\u00a0 On Saturday morning, we will have communion on the beach.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1903\" style=\"width: 179px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Annual-Conference-2013-Kee-Ordination.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1903\" class=\" wp-image-1903\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Annual-Conference-2013-Kee-Ordination-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"Pastor Kee with Bishop Shol during his ordination\" width=\"169\" height=\"112\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Annual-Conference-2013-Kee-Ordination-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Annual-Conference-2013-Kee-Ordination-207x136.jpg 207w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Annual-Conference-2013-Kee-Ordination-260x170.jpg 260w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Annual-Conference-2013-Kee-Ordination-140x94.jpg 140w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Annual-Conference-2013-Kee-Ordination-430x283.jpg 430w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Annual-Conference-2013-Kee-Ordination.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 169px) 100vw, 169px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1903\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pastor Kee with Bishop Schol during his ordination last year<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The conference will also feature Pastor Olujimi Brown who is the lead pastor of Impact Church, a United Methodist Church located in Atlanta.\u00a0 Pastor Olu will lead us in Bible studies on Friday and Saturday mornings.<\/p>\n<p>Another part of the Worship aspect of annual conference is the service of ordination which is held on Saturday night.\u00a0 Last year, we celebrated as Pastor Kee was ordained as a full Elder.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\">&#8220;Service&#8221;<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>During annual conference we also take action to reach out in mission.\u00a0 On Thursday an offering will be taken to support our Future With Hope campaign (which provides relief to NJ residents from hurricane Sandy, provides Mosquito Nets to fight malaria in Africa, and it also provides funds for local missions decided by local churches).<\/p>\n<p>But beyond the offering, the conference is designed to be &#8220;hands-on.&#8221;\u00a0 Throughout the conference, the youth groups will collect unused lunch food (fruit, chips, etc.) and donate them to local food pantries.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, we are planning to pack 50,000 meals, for orphanages, clinics, hospitals and schools in a developing country. All conference attendees are invited to join in on this effort.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Shine!<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Through our service, worship, and even through our &#8220;Holy Conferencing,&#8221; the theme of this year&#8217;s annual conference is &#8220;Shine!\u00a0 We\u00a0 are the Light of the World&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Keeping in Touch&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Further information about the annual conference will be posted on the site and reports will be given after the conference.
