{"id":18810,"date":"2018-07-04T14:33:29","date_gmt":"2018-07-04T18:33:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/?p=18810"},"modified":"2018-09-02T20:29:48","modified_gmt":"2018-09-03T00:29:48","slug":"summering-through-psalm-23-7-1-18-8-12-18","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/?p=18810","title":{"rendered":"Summering Through Psalm 23 (7\/1\/18 &#8211; 8\/12\/18)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\">On July 1, Pastor Jim opened a summer sermon series on the 23rd Psalm.\u00a0 Throughout the summer, we&#8217;ll take a look at one of the Psalm&#8217;s six <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-3973\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/ChapelWin-Good-Shepherd-_DCP_7051-118x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"160\" height=\"407\" \/>verses, week by week.<\/p>\n<p>We tend to associate this Psalm only with funerals, or when something bad is happening.\u00a0 But, it&#8217;s a beautiful statement of our life-long relationship with God.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In our prayer chapel is a stained glass window (shown to the right).\u00a0 It is captioned &#8220;I Am the Good Shepherd&#8221;, and it&#8217;s based on Jesus&#8217; discussion in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=john+10&amp;version=NLT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">John\u00a010<\/span><\/a>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&#8220;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u00a0The hired hand is not the shepherd who owns the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&#8220;I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me\u2014<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u00a0just as the Father knows me and I know the Father \u2014 and I lay down my life for the sheep.<\/span>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">John 10:11-15,\u00a0 NIV<\/p>\n<p>Our Good Shepherd guides us, protects us, comforts us.\u00a0 He knows us by name.\u00a0 He picks us up when we are down, and He even gave His life for us so that we could have this relationship.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">The Good Shepherd&#8230;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This shepherd metaphor isn&#8217;t just something that Jesus made up.\u00a0 Not only did the people living in that time and place understand what it meant to be a shepherd (since many of them were), they also made the connection with the message that the prophets gave them many years earlier&#8230;\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-container et_sliderfx_fade et_sliderauto_false et_sliderauto_speed_5000 et_slidertype_top_tabs'>\n\t\t\t\t<ul class='et-tabs-control'>\n\t\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tGen 48\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\t2 Sam\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tIsa 40\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tEz 34\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tZech 9\n\t\t<\/a><\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul> <!-- .et-tabs-control --> \n\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content'>\n\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-main-wrap'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-wrapper'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Genesis 48:15-16<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 Then he (Jacob) blessed Joseph and said, &#8220;May the God before whom my grandfather Abraham and my father, Isaac, walked\u2014 the God who has been my <span style=\"background-color: #ccffcc;\">shepherd<\/span> all my life, to this very day,<\/p>\n<p>the Angel who has redeemed me from all harm\u2014 may he bless these boys. May they preserve my name and the names of Abraham and Isaac. And may their descendants multiply greatly throughout the earth.&#8221;\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">2 Samuel 5:1-2\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 Then all the tribes of Israel went to David at Hebron and told him, &#8220;We are your own flesh and blood.\u00a0 In the past, when Saul was our king, you were the one who really led the forces of Israel. And the Lord told you, &#8216;You will be the <span style=\"background-color: #ccffcc;\">shepherd<\/span> of my people Israel. You will be Israel&#8217;s leader.'&#8221;\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Isaiah 40:10-11<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 Yes, the Sovereign Lord is coming in power. He will rule with a powerful arm. See, he brings his reward with him as he comes. He will feed his flock <span style=\"background-color: #ccffcc;\">like a shepherd<\/span>. He will carry the lambs in his arms, holding them close to his heart. He will gently lead the mother sheep with their young.\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Ezekiel 34:11-2 &amp; 15-16<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0 &#8220;For this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I myself will search and find my sheep.\u00a0 I will be like a <span style=\"background-color: #ccffcc;\">shepherd<\/span> looking for his scattered flock. I will find my sheep and rescue them from all the places where they were scattered on that dark and cloudy day.<\/p>\n<p>15 I myself will tend my sheep and give them a place to lie down in peace, says the Sovereign Lord.\u00a0 I will search for my lost ones who strayed away, and I will bring them safely home again. I will bandage the injured and strengthen the weak. But I will destroy those who are fat and powerful. I will feed them, yes\u2014feed them justice!\n\t\t<\/div>\n<p>\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Zecheriah 9:16<\/span>\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0 On that day the Lord their God will rescue his people, just as a <span style=\"background-color: #ccffcc;\">shepherd<\/span> rescues his sheep. They will sparkle in his land like jewels in a crown.\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div> <!-- .et-tabs-container --><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>So this song by King David isn&#8217;t limited to funerals.\u00a0 It speaks of a God who loves us so much that He gave His life for us.\u00a0 It reminds us that our Good Shepherd is always nearby, &#8220;guarding, guiding all the way&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Psummer Refresher&#8230;.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The words\u00a0 of this Psalm are familiar to most of us.\u00a0 We&#8217;ve memorized them in Sunday School, we&#8217;ve sang them,we&#8217;ve heard them at funerals.\u00a0 But during this summer, we&#8217;ll take a closer look and apply them to our day in day out lives.\u00a0 Our Good Shepherd is with us in the valleys, on the Mountains, and every place in between.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the sermon schedule (<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">subject to change!<\/span>):<\/p>\n<table style=\"height: 245px; it&#8217;s probably the most popular chapter in the Bible.\u00a0 During the July 1 service, Pastor Jim asked the congregation to recite the psalm, and most repeated the words from the King James Version of the Bible.\u00a0 We know the words, but what do they mean?\u00a0 The King James words are beautiful and flowing&#8230;
