{"id":18077,"date":"2018-05-05T10:04:29","date_gmt":"2018-05-05T14:04:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/?p=18077"},"modified":"2018-05-05T10:05:46","modified_gmt":"2018-05-05T14:05:46","slug":"vanderhoofs-extend-their-kingdom-legacy-4-15-18","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/?p=18077","title":{"rendered":"Vanderhoofs Extend Their Kingdom Legacy (4\/15\/18)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">For decades, Jim and Alice Vanderhoof were missionaries in Kenya.\u00a0 For over 30 years they&#8217;ve been &#8220;Missionaries&#8221; with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wgm.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">World\u00a0Gospel\u00a0Mission<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0 They&#8217;ve helped train new pastors at the Kenya Highlands Bible College, which is a post-secondary level Bible College in Kericho, Kenya.\u00a0 They&#8217;ve served in <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tenwekhospital.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tenwek\u00a0Hospital<\/a><\/span>.\u00a0 They&#8217;ve participated in the worship ministry at the <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.agckenya.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Immanuel\u00a0Africa\u00a0Gospel\u00a0Church<\/span><\/a><\/span>.\u00a0 A full career of answering The Call&#8230; in faraway Kenya.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-18080 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Vanderhoof18-_IMG_1670-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"251\" height=\"188\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Vanderhoof18-_IMG_1670-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Vanderhoof18-_IMG_1670.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 251px) 100vw, 251px\" \/><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">But earlier this year, their mission field changed.\u00a0 Instead of Kericho, Kenya, they now live in Waverly, NY.\u00a0 Back in the US of A; no longer &#8220;Oversees Missionaries.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">But they discovered long ago that they were not called to be missionaries in Kenya; they were called to be followers of Jesus.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The Vanderhoofs have visited PUMC many times, but this time, they didn&#8217;t have to travel as far.\u00a0 On this visit, April 15 2018, they didn&#8217;t speak of activity in Africa.\u00a0 Instead, they challenged us to become followers of Christ instead of devotees to a cause.\u00a0 As they shared their new visions, they challenged us to build our Kingdom Legacy.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Creating a Kingdom Legacy<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>During their visit, Jim and Alice gave the morning&#8217;s sermon.\u00a0 Their scripture was from 2 Timothy 1:8-14, 2:2&#8230;<\/p>\n<div class='et-learn-more clearfix'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class='heading-more'>2 Timothy<span class='et_learnmore_arrow'><span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='learn-more-content'><p><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">2 Timothy 1:8-14<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">8 So never be ashamed to tell others about our Lord. And don&#8217;t be ashamed of me, either, even though I&#8217;m in prison for him. With the strength God gives you, be ready to suffer with me for the sake of the Good News.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">9 For God saved us and called us to live a holy life. He did this, not because we deserved it, but because that was his plan from before the beginning of time\u2014to show us his grace through Christ Jesus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">10 And now he has made all of this plain to us by the appearing of Christ Jesus, our Savior. He broke the power of death and illuminated the way to life and immortality through the Good News.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">11 And God chose me to be a preacher, an apostle, and a teacher of this Good News.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">12 That is why I am suffering here in prison. But I am not ashamed of it, for I know the one in whom I trust, and I am sure that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him until the day of his return.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">13 Hold on to the pattern of wholesome teaching you learned from me\u2014a pattern shaped by the faith and love that you have in Christ Jesus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">14 Through the power of the Holy Spirit who lives within us, carefully guard the precious truth that has been entrusted to you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">2 Timothy 2:1-2<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">1 Timothy, my dear son, be strong through the grace that God gives you in Christ Jesus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">2 You have heard me teach things that have been confirmed by many reliable witnesses. All rights reserved.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>A legacy is defined as an achievement that continues after someone&#8217;s death or retirement.\u00a0 Our legacy continues through the work of the Holy Spirit, but it begins with a call.\u00a0 The Call can be difficult.\u00a0 We may feel totally unqualified; we may even BE unqualified!\u00a0 But God calls us to step out of our comfort zone to answer His call and to begin the creation of our Kingdom Legacy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Imagine being called to Africa!\u00a0 You don&#8217;t know the language.\u00a0 You don&#8217;t know the culture.\u00a0 You probably don&#8217;t even like the food.\u00a0 And yet, God calls you to go to Africa, of all places!\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This is what happened to the Vanderhoofs back in 1984.\u00a0 They felt the need to serve in Africa, but they didn&#8217;t actually feel the Call until after they went.\u00a0\u00a0 Sometimes we might feel a need &#8220;laid on our hearts&#8221; but respond, &#8220;What? Who? Me!?!&#8221;\u00a0 &#8220;God can&#8217;t be calling ME!\u00a0 What good can I do?<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-shadow'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Besides being dedicated servants of Christ, Jim and Alice are also gifted musicians.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">One of Jim&#8217;s &#8220;Greatest Hits&#8221; is a song called &#8220;<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/sweetslyrics.com\/665690.Scott%20Wesley%20Brown%20-%20Please%20Don%27t%20Send%20Me%20To%20Africa.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Please Don&#8217;t Send Me to Africa!<\/a>&#8220;, by Scott Wesley Brown.\u00a0 During the service, Jim pulled up to the piano to give us his rendition.\n <\/span><\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 522px; don&#8217;t like tigers, gorillas or snakes.<\/span><\/em><\/span>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">I&#8217;ll serve you here in suburbia in my comfortable middle class life.\u00a0 But please don&#8217;t send me to the edge of the world where the natives are restless at night.<\/span><\/em><\/span>&#8220;<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 250.967px; just faces upon faces of the people they met in Kenya.\u00a0\u00a0 Instead of making theological points, they told the stories of each of these people\u00a0\u00a0 They considered the greatest legacy that they left in Kenya to be the students they helped (and those who will be helped by these students).\u00a0 The biggest souvenir that they brought from the experience and the legacy that they&#8217;ll leave behind is the story of the relationships that they formed.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<div class='author-shortcodes'>\n\t\t\t<div class='author-inner'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='author-image'>\n\t\t\t<img src='https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/et_temp\/Sunset-Cross_BeHappy-_400x300-18345_60x60.jpg' alt='' \/>\n\t\t\t<div class='author-overlay'><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div> <!-- .author-image --> \n\t\t<div class='author-info'>\n\t\t\t<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Your Story is the greatest Legacy that you will leave to your friends. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It is the longest legacy that you will leave to your heirs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Steve Saint, Missionary<\/p>\n\t\t<\/div> <!-- .author-info -->\n\t\t\t<\/div> <!-- .author-inner -->\n\t\t<\/div> <!-- .author-shortcodes -->\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">What&#8217;s the next Chapter?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In June of 2017, Jim &amp; Alice left Kenya and returned &#8220;home&#8221; to Waverly NY.\u00a0 Instead of being mentors to Kenyans, they are now serving as mentors to missionaries going to Kenya.\u00a0 Most of us invest in mutual funds and 401(k)s, but the Vanderhoofs continue to invest in people.\u00a0 They are still with World Gospel Mission, but in their new role they are looking to develop <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">FAT<\/span><\/strong> people&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">F<\/span><\/strong>aithful, <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">A<\/span><\/strong>vailable, <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">T<\/span><\/strong>eachable<\/span><\/p>\n<p>FAT Christians realize that they were not called to be missionaries in a certain location or to do a certain job for the rest of their lives.\u00a0 Instead, they are called to follow Jesus&#8230; to wherever that might take them and to do whatever God calls them to do.\u00a0 To be Faithful&#8230; Available&#8230; and Teachable.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And being &#8220;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">F<\/span>aithful, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">A<\/span>vailable, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">T<\/span>eachable Christians&#8221; themselves, the Vanderhoofs strive to &#8220;live at the intersection of our passion and God&#8217;s heart for the world.&#8221;\u00a0 They have recently traveled to churches to lead workshops in topics such as Spiritual Gifts, Worship, and Missions.\u00a0 They look forward to participating in this year&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/gettymusicworshipconference.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Sing!\u00a0Worship\u00a0Conference<\/span><\/a><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">,<\/span> in Nashville.\u00a0 They seek to use what they&#8217;ve learned from their 33 years in Kenya to help others discover and develop their gifts for service.\u00a0 They continue to invest in people.\u00a0 They continue to develop a legacy.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re writing the story of our lives every day&#8230;.\u00a0 <br \/>\n Does that story arise from a safe life, or from an inspiring life?\u00a0 <br \/>\n Is it limited by fears, or is it God-sized?\u00a0 <br \/>\n Is your story stuck in a &#8220;safe middle class life&#8221;, or does it reach beyond yourself?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-bio'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><span style=\"color: #000000;\">To learn more about the Vanderhoofs&#8217;
