(2\/4\/18)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sunday February 4, 2018 was a big day at PUMC.\u00a0 In late December, our Pastor (Rev. Jim Bolton), underwent surgery and began a one-month leave of absence period of recovery.\u00a0 Throughout January, services were lead by guest clergy and lay speakers.\u00a0 Administrative decisions were postponed.\u00a0 Visitations were made by local clergy and our own Stephen Ministers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But February 4 came; our pastor returned!\u00a0 The surgery was successful.\u00a0 The ordeal had taken its toll; he had lost some weight, he looked a bit tired, and he used a stool during the sermon.\u00a0 But our prayers had been answered, and he was well and getting stronger.<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-shadow'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><p><em><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Some of our more artistic members created a &#8220;welcome back&#8221; card for Pastor Jim and placed it in front of the sanctuary before he arrived: Pastor Jim Super Guy!\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 &#8220;It&#8217;s been Ruff!&#8221;\u00a0 It illustrated several facets of our relationship with our pastor:<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc;\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-17404\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Superbowl18-PJim-Card-_sr__085821-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Superbowl18-PJim-Card-_sr__085821-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Superbowl18-PJim-Card-_sr__085821.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>The Bolton&#8217;s dog, Ripley, is a frequent sermon illustration.\u00a0 The drawing featured on this display took little Ripley to a menacing level; totally out of character from the cuddly little pup that Ripley really is.\n<p> <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Our Lay and guest speakers delivered sermons that were noticeably shorter than Pastor Jim&#8217;s typical sermon.\u00a0 So, the time saved on these Sundays was returned to Pastor Jim in the form of &#8220;Bone-Us Minutes.&#8221;\n<p> <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The display listed the &#8220;Top Ten Reasons Why We&#8217;re Glad Your Back.&#8221;\u00a0 Here&#8217;s a sampling of the top 10:\u00a0 \n &#8220;<em><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Nobody else names their sermons after music and movies<\/span><\/em>&#8220;&#8230;\u00a0 \n &#8220;<em><span style=\"color: #993366;\">We haven&#8217;t repeated parts of closing hymns lately<\/span><\/em>&#8220;&#8230;\u00a0\u00a0 \n &#8220;<em><span style=\"color: #993366;\">People around town miss Ripely<\/span><\/em>.&#8221;\u00a0 \n The #1 reason summed it all up:\u00a0 &#8220;<em><span style=\"color: #993366;\">We just miss our bald guy<\/span><\/em>!&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">More importantly, the &#8220;card&#8221; included a collection of notes written by members expressing our love and appreciation for Pastor Jim and the Bolton family.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #003300;\">Welcome Back!!!\u00a0 <\/span><\/div><\/div><\/h5>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Sunday February 4 will also go down as a big day in our history for another reason;\u00a0 The Eagles won the superbowl!\u00a0 For the first time- ever- the local football team (the Philadelphia Eagles) won the championship. (OK- they did win way back in 1960, but that was before the current system of leagues and &#8220;superbowl&#8221; was formed).<\/p>\n<p>Superbowl Sunday almost never involves the Philadelphia football team.\u00a0 But, at PUMC we&#8217;ve developed a tradition on Superbowl Sunday.\u00a0 The Superbowl is a big deal across the country, even if its significance is reduced by the absence of our local favorite.\u00a0 Every year, this spectacle captures the country&#8217;s imagination, so why not plug into that energy when we worship God on &#8220;Superbowl Morning&#8221;?<\/p>\n<p>And so, Superbowl Sunday has become Dress Down Sunday at PUMC.\u00a0 No &#8220;Sunday best&#8221; on this particular Sunday.\u00a0 Instead, we wear sports team jerseys.\u00a0 We focus on teamwork and learn from all of the football analogies we possibly can:<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-shadow'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><table style=\"width: 478px; in order to glorify God in the &#8220;real world.&#8221;\u00a0 To continue the analogy, a football field is rough.\u00a0 Offensive linesmen crush into defensive linemen on every play.\u00a0 The quarterback hangs on to the safety of the pocket.\u00a0 Running backs follow the protection of their blockers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the &#8220;field of our day to day lives&#8221;, the World makes it hard for us to &#8220;get downfield.&#8221;\u00a0 Our faith is attacked.\u00a0 Our God is shoved aside.\u00a0 The Bible reminds us that the enemy on this field isn&#8217;t another football team; it&#8217;s Satan!<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;<em><span style=\"color: #993366;\">For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.<\/span><\/em>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">-Eph 6:12<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>But the good news is that God has provided us with some powerful tools that will allow us to succeed.\u00a0 Pastor Jim&#8217;s sermon, &#8220;Being Victorious on Life&#8217;s Playing Field&#8221;, took us to Ephesians 6:10-18 and reminded us about the &#8220;Armor of God.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.\u00a0 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place,\u00a0 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #993366;\">In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.\u00a0 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #993366;\">And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests.<\/span> <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">-Eph 6:13-18<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-container et_sliderfx_fade et_sliderauto_false et_sliderauto_speed_5000 et_slidertype_top_tabs'>\n\t\t\t\t<ul class='et-tabs-control'>\n\t\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tBelt\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tShoulder Pads\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tShoes\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tShield\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tHelmet\n\t\t<\/a><\/li> \n\t\t<li><a href='#'>\n\t\t\tSword\n\t\t<\/a><\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul> <!-- .et-tabs-control --> \n\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content'>\n\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-main-wrap'>\n\t\t\t\t<div class='et-tabs-content-wrapper'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Belt of Truth<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The belt encircles you and it holds things up.\u00a0 Your sword and all your tools depend on the belt.\u00a0 Truth.\u00a0 Nothing works unless it&#8217;s based in God&#8217;s truth.\u00a0 The best source of truth that we have is the Bible (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=2+Timothy+3%3A14-16&amp;version=TLB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">2\u00a0Tim.\u00a03:16<\/span><\/a>).\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Breastplate of Righteousness<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Football players wear a harness consisting of pads protecting the shoulders and the upper chest.\u00a0 We need to guard our hearts.\u00a0 All\u00a0 of our thoughts and actions come from the control center of our hearts.\u00a0 Righteousness comes from Faith, Hope, and Love.\u00a0 Faith, Hope, and Love must form the foundation of our Heart- all of our thoughts, words, and actions.\u00a0\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Shoes<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We are called to walk.\u00a0 To go into the world in love and service.\u00a0 But we need shoes to protect our feet.\u00a0 And we do that with the &#8220;gospel of peace&#8221; that God has given us (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=john+14%3A25-27&amp;version=TLB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">John 14:27<\/span><\/a>).\u00a0 And these shoes must fit.\u00a0 When we &#8220;walk&#8221;&#8230; when we act and &#8220;do things&#8221;, it must be in the shoes that match the purpose that God has given us.\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Shield of Faith<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Roman shield was big enough to protect up to 3 men.\u00a0 The Shield of faith is held in teamwork.\u00a0 We depend on each other and protect each other.\u00a0 We find strength and protection when we share our faith (through small groups, Bible Studies and Accountability Groups).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Just as every player on a football team depends on his teammates, we depend on the faith from each other to allow us to hold the shield of the Lord&#8217;s protection \n (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=ps+18%3A2&amp;version=TLB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Psalm 18:2<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=ps+28%3A7&amp;version=TLB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Psalm 28:7<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=gen+15%3A1&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Genesis 15:1<\/span><\/a>).\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Helmet of Salvation<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A Helmet protects our head.\u00a0 Concussions can rattle our thinking and cause us to stray from God and towards the ways of the world.\u00a0 But God calls us to think in a new way (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=romans+12%3A1-2&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Romans 12:2<\/span><\/a>).\u00a0 Salvation causes us to think in different ways, to want different things.\u00a0 We must protect that mindset by being alert to the things around us (see <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1+Peter+5%3A8-9&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1\u00a0Peter\u00a05:8-9<\/a>)<\/span>.\u00a0 What do we fill our minds with?\n\t\t<\/div>\n<p>\n\t\t<div class='et_slidecontent'>\n\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Sword of the Spirit<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The sword is used in hand to hand combat.\u00a0 We need to fight against evil in our every day lives; down where &#8220;the rubber meets the road.&#8221;\u00a0 And so, to be ready for any circumstance, we need to intentionally put on the armor that God has provided for us.\u00a0\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div> <!-- .et-tabs-container -->\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Wait &#8216;Till Next Year!<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Usually, the playoff season in Philadelphia ends with a sense of &#8220;wait until next year.&#8221;\u00a0 The season ends with a loss and we walk off the field.<\/p>\n<p>But when Jesus comes to lead us off the &#8220;Field of Life,&#8221; our victory is guaranteed.\u00a0 Instead of the Lombardi trophy, we have the promise of casting down our crowns at the feet of God in heaven.\u00a0 Our robes will be white and we&#8217;ll be in perfect unity with our Creator.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What greater victory is there than that?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;
