This will be our annual Christmas Cantata (which will be held at the traditional time of 4:15 PM&#8230; in our sanctuary). The Tapestry String Quartet along with our own Sue Crispin will play the accompaniment. Jack Rowland will pull everything together by directing the music.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-16578 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Messiah12-_Sue-100_0026-400x300-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Messiah12-_Sue-100_0026-400x300-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Messiah12-_Sue-100_0026-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The &#8220;Christmas Part&#8221; of Handel&#8217;s famous oratorio is organized around a series of six Choruses (which are sung by the full choir). A set of solos introduce each chorus. In most cases, there are two solos; one is called a Recitative and the second is called an Air. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The Christmas section of the oratorio actually consists of six choruses, and the Hallelujah Chorus ends the Easter section. But- who could resist- we will end our cantata with the Hallelujah Chorus.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">In the weeks leading up to our December 17 Cantata, we will provide weekly &#8220;Countdown to The Messiah&#8221; text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\">For Unto Us a Child is Born<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/?p=16596\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Glory to God<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/pitmanumc.org\/wp\/?p=16599\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">His Yoke is Easy and His Burthen is Light<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Hallelujah Chorus<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol><\/div><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Chorus 7 of 7: &#8220;The Hallelujah Chorus&#8221;<\/span><\/h3>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Context<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Handel&#8217;s famous oratorio consists of three parts, and our Christmas cantata presents only the first part (commonly known as the &#8220;Christmas Section&#8221;).\u00a0 Part 2 is the &#8220;Easter Section&#8221;, and Part 3\u00a0 gives thanks for the salvation that God has provided.\u00a0 The entire oratorio ends with the chorus, &#8220;Worthy is the Lamb that was Slain.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The chorus which ends Part 2 (the &#8220;Hallelujah Chorus&#8221;) is probably the most famous piece in the oratorio.\u00a0 Even though it is not part of &#8220;The Christmas Section,&#8221; it has traditionally ended our presentation of this cantata because it is so recognizable.\u00a0 It puts an exclamation point on the gift of Life and Salvation that God has offered us through His Son.<\/p>\n<p>And so, we end our cantata (as we do every Easter service), with this &#8220;exclamation point&#8221;!<\/p>\n<p>In part 2, this chorus is introduced by two Tenor solos (a short, four-measure recitative followed by an Air).\u00a0 We won&#8217;t include these solos in our cantata, but here&#8217;s what they are:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Recitative for Tenor:\u00a0 &#8220;<strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">He that Dwelleth in Heave<\/span><\/strong>n&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Air for Tenor:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 &#8220;<strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Thou Shalt Break Them<\/span><\/strong>&#8220;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>It might seem strange to introduce such a powerfully positive chorus like the &#8220;Hallelujah Chorus&#8221; with a song entitled &#8220;Thou Shalt Break Them,&#8221; but the message of our chorus and of these solos is that God will Win!\u00a0 Sin and all rebellion will be broken and &#8220;He shall reign forever and ever&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The solos come from Psalm 2.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s Psalm 2:1-9 (King James Version):<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\n <span style=\"color: #800000;\">1 Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">3 Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">4 He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">5 Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">6 Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">7 I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">8 Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">9 Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter&#8217;s vessel.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">God Wins!<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;Hallelujah Chorus&#8221; then takes us to the scene in heaven that&#8217;s depicted in Revelation chapters 11 and 19.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s how the King James Version puts it&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, <br \/>\n <span style=\"background-color: #ffff99;\">Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.<\/span><span style=\"background-color: #ffffff; color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0\u00a0 -Rev 19:6\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, <span style=\"background-color: #ffff99;\">The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ<\/span>;\u00a0 <span style=\"background-color: #ffff99;\">and he shall reign for ever and ever<\/span>.<span style=\"color: #000000; background-color: #ffffff;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0\u00a0 -Rev 11:5<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, <span style=\"background-color: #ffff99;\">KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>-Rev 19:16\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Message<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Most of the words of these choruses are very familiar; they come right out of the Bible. But we&#8217;re used to the King James words, and sometimes the familiarity with the words blocks us from fully appreciating their meaning. And so, the below summary of our Weekly Chorus uses Eugene Peterson&#8217;s paraphrase, The Message.
